Title: Homelite XL ignition issues
Post by: Jim Davis on April 01, 2016, 01:22:18 AM
I have 2 XLs that I would like to make one runner out of. One has no spark and good compression--ignition has points.

Second has good spark, but poor compression. I pulled the coil from the good one but it's system was breakerless. Now that I have the two coils out, I can't remember how the breakerless coil was wired--ground, kill switch, etc. Also not sure if I can use the breaker version flywheel with the breakerless coil. (Breakerless version fly wheel won't fit over the breaker compartment) 8-(

Can anyone help me out? Diagram, photo, description?

Thanks,

Jim

On my XL there are two wires going to the on/off switch.
The ground wire is on one of the ignition module bolts and goes to one side of the switch.
The other wire comes out of the module and goes to the other side of the switch.

For what it's worth I put the "One has no spark and good compression--ignition has points." back together and change it to electronic ignition with a Nova 31-1986 & Nova II 31-8786 transistorized ignition module, cost less than $15.

Thanks to both of you! I have spark now. The IM is a good idea too.

Saw starts, runs and oils. Tiny little thing, but cuts well. I'm happy to have it usable.

Thanks.
