Here, we refer to mountain oysters a little bit different.   :D

Your thinking prairie oyster maybe? ;)

Swamp, we ain't got no praries here in WV.  Lucky to find land flat enough to call a feild. Even then, you kill yourself pickin the rocks out to plant something after you plow.  We grow really, REALLY nice rocks in this state and some timber.   :D

Didn't say you had to live on prairie. But, I see what your talking about now. You haven't got enough rocks though because there is still too many up here. I have 4.5 acres around the house surrounded by field and I think the farmers are trying to close me in with their field rocks. I guess my lot is their personal dump. These new generation farmers. :D

I ate some Kippered Herring tonight ... lightly smoked. I don't think I've had them before. They were delicious. Even got my wife to try some. She said they were better than canned tuna. That surprised me. We ate them with some oilve oil and black pepper flavored Triscuits.

SwampDonkey

You can get them already in Olive oil, or hot peppers, mustard...just about anything out of the can. ;D

The black pepper triscuits are great. Really good with chicken salad. Go real well with smoked oysters too.

Funny you should mention that Lee. I just bought a bunch of chicken breasts to make a big batch of chicken salad to go with them. The store was out of "regular" Triscuits but had these on sale. I'm glad I got derailed from the original flavor.  :) I bought some Rosemary/Olive oil flavored Triscuits too. Haven't tried them yet.

The peepr ones are not always on the shelf around home , so Lindy usually wipes out the store when she finds them.

I made a sandwich yesterday out of some King Oscar sardines (Brisling something or another...mediterranean ....) and some hearty white bread. Splashed a little Louisiana hot sauce on each bite. It was really good. The down side to sardines for me is the after burps. All that fish oil. It's like taking a couple fish oil pills and getting the burps after. Ack ... Good sandwich though.

SwampDonkey

:D :D The fish is probably better, even if there is an after burp.

Yep, at least with the fish I get some enjoyment. Will the pills I just get the burps.

Used to love 'em.  When I was in the army overseas, several of us would load up on sardines, kippers, crackers, and a supply of beer when possible.  They were a little aromatic especially in a small tent.  Some of the uninitiated growled about it but not as much as an hour or so later.   ;D

I bet that tent got real small an hour later.  :D Time to put on the old gas mask....

As this thread got me poring over my life of relationship with sardines ( if available, I like mine bestest with onions, crackers and cheese), I find no recollection of ever having them with grits.    :(

Never figured sardines were that bad. What was bad one time though was a bunch of forestry workers in a chopper with wet gear on and having ate a supper the evening before laced with garlic. :D :D

Sardines and kippers mixed with lots of beer could be classified as chemical warfare in the right conditions.   I definitely wouldn't want to be in the air with a squeamish pilot.   :D
