Title: Fair Price
Post by: Bill Gaiche on February 15, 2014, 10:59:45 AM
Just need a little advice on pricing of red oak. Kiln dried Red Oak sells at a mill 37 miles from at $2.25 per brd. ft. Its planed to 13/16" and has one straight edge. Full 2" is $3.65. My question is when I saw my own dry it and turn it into furniture, what is a suggested price should I charge per board ft? Just trying to cover my cost and this wood is usually for friends and family projects, not in the business of making a living. Thanks for your advice in advance. bg

If you consider the waste, glue, sandpaper, finish etc; your cost is quite a bit more than time & effort cutting/drying the wood.  Pricing the wood $3.00 - $4.00 would be reasonable.  Note that this does not consider overhead cost of shop & tooling (or your labor).

Is that price per board foot or per board.  What is the grade no.1, FAS, no.2 ect. lots of factors in the price of lumber.

Wholesale pricing around here is $1.60 retail is as high as $8.00 I would think that anywhere in between would be fair .
