Tree I cut down in SE Texas. Beech, yellowwood, other? Smooth, painted bark. pale yellow wood. smooth tooth leaves. i think compound. I dont know if it was opposite or alternate. I think opposite.

I need to know if it is good for carving esp. knife handles.

mesquite buckeye

Leaves, flowers and fruits would be helpful.
Manage 80 acre tree farm in central Missouri and Mesquite timber and about a gozillion saguaros in Arizona.

I'm guessing some kind of beech. I guess you can make any kind of knife handle from any kind of wood, but don't know what kind of detail you want to carve in. Might as well try some and see what happens.

Ron Scott

American Beech. It ranges to SE Texas.

Bark looks like sweetbay magnolia.  What it in a wet location and have a waxy leaf
If it was easy everybody would be doing it
