Went through the junk pile and managed to get two of the old retired 288xps running.  They re pretty worn out, but running decent.  Im wondering if there might be some ideas out there for some use for these old girls.

We use 385/390 s now and I've got a 2100 for nostalgic days.

I suppose it depends on what you want to do with them .

I've got a Stihl 038 Mag that spent 20 hard years of service for a tree service I've rebuilt twice and a 700 Mac I built from three that occassionally come off the self as back ups .They can still get-er-done .

I'd imagine that 2100 still could  also if you have someone with enough strength to get that arm breaker started .

1270d, As Al said, depends on what you do with them! I have a 20 year old 044 that has be with me since the 90,s its been rebuilt and tickled a little and runs like the dickens.I take this saw with me everywhere. I think it runs better than the new saw,s today IMO. Tim

Well, I guess what im asking is, can someone who is a decent mechanic tune these saws a bit?  Or should I just sell em?

They are basically no good to us anymore, except maybe to try some engine work.  I've never opened a port in my life.  Sure I've added performance parts to things, but that as far as its gone.

Im not a saw collector like some of you guys, I have one truck which I drive till a certain point, then get rid of it for a different one.  Same with saws.

They can be tuned and parts are still available. You can open up the intake and exhaust ports with a standard die grinder. You will need a very small angled tool to touch the upper transfer ports.

Lowering the intake port, raising the exhaust and widening both will give you gains. You will need a degree wheel to determine where you are at and where you need to go.

It's one of those things you're either into it or you're not .If not peddle them .

You can make them scoot alright with a little massaging but that's up to you .

Myself the sun will rise in the west before anyone soups up my saws .If I can get-er-done myself my pride won't let any one else do it .You never really know until you give it a go . ;)

Tey may be junk to you but there are lots of folks out there who would love to freshen tem up. ebay them! Problem for private sales is the cost of shipping sometimes costs more than those saws are worth. I would be interested too as there is a local guy who uses 288's exclusively and I've helped him get parts saws to build. I personally like bringing the 266-272 series back to life.

Walter where you been? I feared you were stuck under 6 feet of New York snow and was just about to launch a search party.
