I'm in the middle of two weeks of cataract surgery recovery so not getting much done in the woods. First eye Monday a week ago and second eye done yesterday. So on Sunday I brought in three cart loads of wood so the wife wouldn't be yapping that I was doing to much to soon this week. We had our first snow Sunday night. About an inch and about a month later than usual.

I brought a load of firewood up six weeks ago and finally stuck a Pine Knot under some scraps and lit a flicker this morning.  fire_smiley   38° which qualifies as nippy here.

I lit another flicker this morning and will do so again tomorrow morning.  After that it is "off to the races" again with the 60's & 70's returning.  No more frigid temperatures until next weekend.  It is our normal up/down weather pattern.

It has been a warm and dry October and November here this year. I have been able to keep the house comfortable with just the kitchen wood stove. The basement stove has only been used a few days so far. Usually that stove runs from mid to late October right through the winter. I did start it this morning as the house is feeling cool. There is a cold rain falling with a temp of 37.
I think the serious heating season has started.

Shop stove gets fired up early in the morning and left to burn out. Pretty much the same with the house furnace, except I do make a small evening fire in it. I still burn through a wheel barrel load in the furnace. You wouldn't think so, but that is reality. I see no need to run electric with piles of wood around here.

With the temperature swings, our central heat is never off.  The wood heat is supplemental.

We are @ 37° here and I touched the kindling off.  Looking at the forecast, this will be our last flicker until next weekend.

I am trying to schedule sawing for Dec 2nd and it will be in the 30's.  Yup, nippy.  :uhoh:

Quick EDIT:  We are scheduled to begin sawing on the 4th.

Been low 40's here in the mornings and doesn't change too much all day. Ground has never froze more than a couple hard frosts over a week ago. Sky has been grey for days.

I've been hit and miss with the fireplace, the sun can really warm the house quite nice, and  its been real warm, but with snow coming this week. I"ll be filling the wood box and have 2 fires a day.

For me it is perfect fire weather right now.  Build one fire in the morning when it is in the 30°'s and let it die out in the late morning after it has warmed up.  The next day, "rinse and repeat".   There will be no fire now until next weekend.

Yup, when you have sunny days in the winter and big windows it makes a lot of heat. But you need sun.  ffcheesy

Yup, no flicker this morning.  40° when I got up, 43° now, and it should hit 70° by noon.  :sunny:

Yep, 70 sure makes a difference. If I had that kind of warmth a couple windows would stay up all day like summer.... except them 90's days with high RH.

Nov has been pretty normal here we finally got some much needed rain. Temps have been 20-30's at night and 40-60's in the day. Have been doing a lot of fall field work after the rain came threw. Seems strange around here not having the Garn and burning wood. Didn't end up getting a new boiler bought so we just filled the propane tank and pre bought some more for later in the winter. I will do some more boiler looking when spring gets here. Spending another twenty grand at my age for a boiler just might not make any sense.

I loaded up the wood trailer yesterday ,about a tad over a face cord .However if everything goes as it has in the past it will be the first week in December before I light the fire .As I type it's 36 degrees .That face cord will usually last about a week unless it gets cold enough to freeze the business off a brass monkey .Last few years it very seldom drops to zero .From December to mid March the fire very seldom goes out which equals about 4.5 cords of wood .I think I've got enough but if I get a spark of energy I'll fetch another cord .

Magicman

My insert is loaded with a half day's worth of wood.  We are forecast for 41° so I will light it in the morning and let it burn out.  We are forecast for 31° Saturday so it might burn all day.

North wind so there will be no hunting.

We have accumulating snow here, the plow just passed by. [Note, I had to add that word to the browser dictionary, it was too repulsive for the writers to include ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy ] It's 33°, so it's wet heavy stuff. I saw a tree truck pull up here at 2:00 am this morning. I never saw him leave except back up some to the intersection of my cousins road to the house. Going out to the shop soon and see what is going on.

It's 92 round trip miles to the cabin from where I live so no way will I go without at least having the wind right.

Magic, thanks for the explanation. Looks like you own some nice property.

Thank You.

I inherited half and bought the other half in 2005.  Sadly I planted SYP seedlings on almost all of the open pastures in the Northern half which took a terrible toll during the drought and subsequent beetle kill this past year.  Most of the trees planted in the bottom land survived and most of the ones planted on the ridges died.  I suffered no loss on the ~15 acres of various species of Oak seedlings which were planted in 2009.

The Southern half is all hardwood and even though it could be select harvested now, I will never harvest a single tree on the property.  It's value to me is personal enjoyment and recreation.

I don't think we ever got much above freezing yesterday, I haven't had to relight the stove since just before Thanksgiving... I guess winter is here!

Brought in a bucket of dry wood to the basement.  Its the last of this years wood that was on my old pallet system, rest of the wood is in the new shed.

I do.have 2 or 3 more pallets of drying stuff that needs to be broke down and moved to next years woodshed, but that hasn't made it very far up my to do list yet!
