I think the cable is called a dongle.

I would think that cable allows the connection to work like a that between a TV and a VCR. Much like casting, only on a cable connection instead of WIFI. I do it all the time through HDMI, which also provides sound [casting does also]. I also use bluetooth keyboard and mouse, so I can sit a few feet away from the laptop in a comfy chair. Put your TV input through HDMI connection with laptop, TV is now a monitor.

Well the cable arrives today and after an hour of diddling around I finally came to realize neither my phone nor my tablet seem to support sending video through the usb-c port, a mode called 'hdmi-alt'. I did a lot of searching and tried a lot of things, but there is just no way I can get it to work.

So I am fine for my open house, but for shows I will have to connect both the phone and the. Chromecast to the same Wi-Fi network, so this seems kind of unlikely to be workable except maybe for this weekend s show.

Of well, can't win them all.

I just read that the industry and the  HDMI Licensing Administration no longer supports the HDMI-alt mode anyway. One of the reasons is HDMI out is supported on laptops anyway. Iphones and Google phone don't support it, and any laptop that has HDMI isn't going to anyway.  I think some smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S did support it. But all support for it is over now apparently, going forward.

NOW you tell me?! :uhoh: I cold have saved the 16 bucks. :wink_2: SO I either need a device (laptop) with an HDMI out port or a large tablet to just display it directly. I almost feel like I wasted 3 days on this just to find a dead end.

ffcheesy ffcheesy I wasn't aware you were pursuing a pseudo HDMI connection, as it was not me that suggested it.

What if your phone is the wifi network? Make your phone the hotspot, connect your tv right to the phone wifi

Costs $45, and will need some accessories like power and keyboard / mouse. But turns ANY TV into a "smart" TV, that YOU are in charge of.

They are what a lot of commercial sign displays etc use. It started as a "school tech" project, to sell ~$10 computers to kids to play with and learn. But has taken on a life of it's own in commercial and hobby electronics.  They started off hoping to sell maybe 10,000 units to cover the cost of manufacturing. Last count was 61 million across the various versions. The latest version has a 4 core CPU, 8gb of Ram etc, Basic desktop or tablet cpu power. It costs more than $10 of course, more like $80, but it's a lot of computer for that price.

Well truthfully folks, I think this is a hill I don't want to die on. I am not looking for another project and I don't want to add a lot of hardware (which I will have to power) or make complicated setups that take time at each show to get going. I will hold out until a simple solution when it walks in front of me.
I need my phone to accept payment, so I can't dedicate that to this slideshow thing. Something will come along if I keep my eyes open long enough.
If I do well at these next two shows I'd like to get a new laptop (this one is aging out and slow) so that I an add a small laser to the shop this winter. That may solve the issue for me without any other nonsense.
I'll just table this for now.
