Quack !!

I heard the wood frogs about 6 weeks ago but the outside temperature was so high and low that I didn't hear them as much as most years.
Walking around in the woods yesterday, I spotted this guy

He seems very orange for a frog so I was a little worried.... but it turns out that wood frogs are very variable in color.

Here's a link that tells more about them. They are the only frog to live north of the Arctic Circle.

Well, you learn something new every day on this forum!   :)

I did not know that wood frogs can freeze and revive.  I have also never seen one that is orange.  Very interesting!

Speaking of freezing, a taxidermist friend of mine was brought a live Rattlesnake to mount.  Not wanting to damage it, he put it into his freezer to freeze it to death.  A few months later he got it out to mount.  Yup,  still alive after it thawed.

I'll have to install that into my memory banks "Never freeze a live rattlesnake"! :o

Freezing reptiles is how they are euthanized.  But I'm not sure how long and at what temperature they need to be kept.

That would be quite a surprise for the rattlesnake to wake up!  :D

That is cool the the frog can defrost.  The Discovery Channel had a show on the Arctic and there is a caterpillar that lives for 15 years and freezes each winter before he makes the big tranformation.
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

I don't know, apparently there was enough body heat inside to maybe keep the body core from freezing??  There are some very strange things that happen in nature to insure the survival of some species.

I suppose that makes for a very life-like mount  :D
