Map dishonesty is kind of a neat thing to google.  Because of the means of trying to make a flat map from a round service, liberties were taken depending on what was trying to be conveyed.  The flat world map as almost everyone would recognize, is actually really far off  in showing the actual size of the countries.  Quite while back on the tv show westwing, there was a storyline that told about this. Quite interesting.

We learned about the world on a globe in school and it never crossed my mind that Greenland was anywhere near the size of Africa.On a globe,all is right with the world but I do remember a "orange peel map" up on the wall in our classrooms but a globe was always easier to look at.
Because we learned the top of a map is north,it would always be the way most looked at it,besides the bulk of the continents are in the northern hemisphere.
