Man the Osbourne Brothers, and that was right in their hey day. Sonny just passed last year. I never met him, but I have a good friend in KY who was close to him especially in his last decade.  Man I'd love to see that poster, I hope you do something nice with it, that a little piece of history right there, a true wall hanger.

Sawmills and Milling / Re: Band blade drag sharpener
Last post by RetiredTech - Today at 08:08:32 PM
It was a rainy day here so I decided to try out the sharpener on some real blades. Since I haven't made the support arms yet I just used some 2x6's to support the band. It worked out very well. I sharpened 4 blades today. I think I'm starting to get the hang of how it works. The first blades I bought weren't welded where teeth worked out equally. They have extra space at the weld joint that doesn't work out well for the two teeth in the weld area. I'll try to clean them up with a dremel tool. Funny thing is I've bought two boxes of blades from Woodmizer and the teeth at their weld are just like the rest of the blade.
I was so pleased with how the sharpener works that I ordered spare grinder wheels.  Once I finish sharpening the rest of my dull bands the sharpener will have paid for itself.
Next build has to be a tooth setter. Maybe a modified Piney Woods setter.

Nail stories. This would be in the early 50"s. I remember when I was just a little kid my Dad and Grandfather were shingling the roof. I was sitting in the driveway watching or more listening to the tap-thump, tap-thump, tap-thump and was totally intrigued by it. There were bundles of asphalt shingles, a big box of roofing nails, and a pile of scrap cut-offs sitting there. Next time Dad came down the ladder I asked him if I could nail some scraps into a board. He says sure. I was trying for the tap-thump but all I could do was tap-tap-tap-tap-tapity-tap. Then somehow, don't know how, I discovered that if I forgot the board and just drove the nails into the asphalt I could do the tap-thump just fine. I got a good bit of the driveway shingled with with those scraps before he came down again. And he went about as wild as I have ever seen him. My Grandfather had to come down to save me. His laughing cooled old Dad off.

Well I had a lazy day today, I did some finishing work on the park bench but not much. I piddled with other stuff but it was such a nice day I just wanted to enjoy it. It hit 84° today! So it was time to put the screen door back on so the cats could enjoy the fresh air and what the boids and chickmunks better. ffcheesy They seemed pleased with that development.
I finished my little mental celebration of the new storage system in the trailer and moved on to more of the details. Part of my issue is that things are always packed nicely when I go to the show, but packing up the show I can't remember how it was all packed, which causes a mess, and repacking at home after the show. So  the new plan is to have all the small stuff in boxes and mark the boxes with what goes in them, packing should be easier. I still have crates to make after I make the lumber, but in the meantime I took out all the stuff I hastily threw in boxes packing up the show and sorted it. It became really obvious that I did a less than poor job, with wasted space in some crates and over packing in others and similar product in different boxes. When I was done sorting and re-packing what I could, I had one empty box and one empty crate. Still need to make those 'right sized' crates, but it's looking better with every iteration. I think the labeling is going to help a lot. I also found one more stool (actually a foot riser) and had no problem strapping it down with the benches. Still more room in that stack.  I need to label the shelves in it so I know which bench was in what position, that will speed things up also. So most of my stuff is much better stowed away now. 2 to 3 more crates and it will all be good.
I will say, it gets HOT in that trailer without the back door open. 95° today. I am going have to re-locate it so it does not get sun most of the day like it did today. I just have to move the splitter out of my way first. The woodpile area is a mess.
So this day was not very exciting, but progress is being made and that is something. Just kind of a lazy day for me as I try to pick myself up after that last failure.
 Tomorrow is another day.

Drying and Processing / What mc is safe to start steri...
Last post by forrestM - Today at 07:39:18 PM
I know there are probably a dozen of these posts, so I apologize. What mc is it safe to start high temp sterilization (I'm talking 140-160 f).

Does it matter the species? And does it matter the thickness? Or is mc the only deciding factor?

I always assumed it was anytime you got to 15 percent you were safe from any harm to the wood

Thanks!

Ask The Forester / Re: Balsam fir tops missing

In my woods, the red squirrels do this to pine, spruce or balsam fir in the winter months

Ruffed grouse will eat ones generally under 3-4 feet if you get enough snow they can walk on and munch on the tops too, but they mainly stick to aspen it seems

Quote from: memopad on Today at 10:51:41 AMIf you really need a straight cut, I've had good luck cutting two cants, putting them side by side on the mill, and then cutting them together.
I have never sawed Spruce, but I did try sawing two logs:

Lets just say that it will never happen again.

There were 3 forms of communication at Granny Barnes, telephone, telegraph and tell Sue. It was usually her breathing in the background   :uhoh:.

Today I was wearing a respirator again, removing insulation, God knows what all and then some under the balcony framing in the old theater. Under the insulation poofing dust like y'all cannot imagine there was an old poster. The Osborne Brothers, JD Higgens "Mr Country Gold" and the Alleghany Cloggers put on a show April 26th, year unknown. Seems like yesterday JD was hosting the local Saturday radio show after retiring from the Opry. He signed off about 5 years ago and had a co-host the last few years to keep things on track as his memory had its moments. In the pic he was young and in sideburns, I'd guess 60's- early 70's. I did find something cool yesterday, a date on the sprinkler triggers. If you zoom, 1956. Notice the melting, the fuse almost blew.

I cut open a couple of the tops that had been cut or damaged or whatever, but were still present. Other than discoloration and maybe some fungus or rot, I didn't see anything obvious, like larvae or a hollow area.
