A new year for the weather thread.
22° and maybe 3 inches of snow on the ground. Small ponds not even frozen over.
+3C here at midnight and no snow. If we don't get some soon it is going to be a long dry summer again.
Snowed here for 3 days, but only 2-3" inches. 16F here this morning. And going to get colder later in the week. Ski hills here are struggling, not enough snow for cross country skis either. The road here is about half plowed as usual, so a kick sled will work fine on the road shoulders. ;D
21*F . measured 5" snow from the last round. wet stuff but dried
out now so xc skiing is good out in the open, not enough for woods trails.
Been too soft and wet to get the tractor out for trail clearing of blowdowns but got some limbing done . Some sun on tap.
Solar hot water production has been dismal for awhile.
Been overcast all day, about 22F here. Had some squalls.
Did not get above freezing today.
Tomorow full sun and the 38°.
Two days ago, where I saw the wood for firewood, was soft.
Still kinda soft, but when I turn sharp, I don't plow up the ground. It's started to freeze a little.
16F this morning, won't get above freezing here. Sun for a change possibly, since the moon and stars are out. But that can change quick. Often it clouds over at day break. ::)
Another house or shack fire up the road last night. Not sure where at, never went for a drive to see.
Feels like a January morning out there @ 7* F. No wind is good.
Poking some yellow birch to the woodstove trying
to warm things up . Sunny and mid 30s later.
Fire was false alarm they said. Went to house that was all in darkness, no one home.
47° and sunny in eastern NC today.
Jim Rogers
It is supposed to hit 30° here today, and then drop off to "normal" January temps for us. It has already frozen back up the last 3-4 days.
I have to go check on the swamp road out to the timber sale I have. It was starting to freeze down, I could drive my pickup out across it. But with the unusually warm weather we were having, I didn't dare put any wood on the ground until I knew I had it froze down enough for haul trucks. Well, then things thawed out completely so I am back at square one. But when the nights start dipping down to 0° or below, the roads freeze down fast.
Thursday onward will be down into single numbers here. The ice on my wet crossing was 5" thick before the thaw. I suspect it's still solid. Brooks here are still wide open and the beaver pond only had a skim of ice before the thaw. The beavers have been expanding the pond to. The water used to be just at the boundary line, now it is 20 feet across in one spot. :snowball: I bet that pond is 5 acres. Then a smaller one above about an acre.
Supposed to get the first real snow tonight. Six to twelve inches above 4,000'. Cabin is at 5,800'+. Maybe an inch of rain down here. Repeat on Saturday and again early next week. Currently, nothing on the ground up there. Last year at this point I think there was 6 to 8 feet.
Edit: 11pm I80 closed over the summit.
woodroe you need to move up my way, :D I think I had 12°.
But I bet at the Souther Farm, it was 7°. They are only about 10 minutes from me.
As I say, that bog I cross would have been that cold too. That is about a 2 minute ride by a car.
I have not been by Mosher in daylight. But that has to be froze over now. Had temps below freezing for more then 48 hours and today was only a few hours above freezing.
Windy, 14°F. 18" of snow-officially, but the wind means 2" in some places and 4 ft in others. It should be sunny, but well below 0°F by the end of the week.
We had sun for half a day, then the cloud cover moved in. Got to 26F here yesterday. The temp didn't drop much below that last night. Going to get to barely above freezing today. And then going to drop like a rock for the rest of the week, not even into the 20's for highs. :snowball:
Warmer this morning, 21*.
Ray, saw a guy 50' out on Norcross pond fishing yesterday afternoon so making ice again.
Looked like he had a Bald Eagle hanging around.
Been across the valley from you alot since March Ray, Bragdon Rd.
Picked up some work to pay for my newer truck and became the caretaker
of the place. Good part time gig local. Camp on 80 acres w/18 acre beaver pond, pvt. airfield.
Well last week was still mild-ish with daytime highs around low 40's and lows at night in the mid to low 30's with pretty much solid, depressing cloud cover. Around Thursday that began to drop and now we have has lows in the low 20's at night and mid thirties. Yesterday was a low of 19 and a high of 38 (for just 20 minutes) and we had a bunch of sun. The nights have been really clear and crisp.
Seems like we are a week or two behind SD and Ray, do I figure in a week or two we should hang down in the freezing numbers. It is good to feel the ground getting stiff finally, but it's not machine stiff yet. ;D
Norcross :o
Have to watch them guys on Norcross!!
I saw them out about 20 feet a few weeks back. The only reason they was only out 20 feet was because they ran out of ice. :o :o
Nice link you posted.
Can't even go out on the dead water of the head pond here. Very thin ice, places with open water along shore to. The Big Presque Isle River by here is ice free, not even slush floating by. Will be by Monday as there are 3 or 4 cold days well below freezing for highs coming up.
I think we got to 34F here yesterday, no sun. Dark clouds and a blue haze look of rain.
-10C here with touch of snow to make it look like winter. The lake is only froze half way across .
This morning is the first time this winter that we have more than an inch of snow.
We now have about 2 inches of snow and 26°f.
28F this morning with a veil of fog over the land. :D
Wind started about noon time.
Makes it a little more on the cold side.
Yeah, wind started kicking up around 5:00 pm here. It was 32F then, it's 19F now at 6:40 pm. fire_smiley
Clear, calm morning, -4°F (and the chickens, in their unheated coop, are still laying ).
Those are some tough chickens.
10*F here. Quick change in air mass like Ray mentioned.
Went from spring temps to arctic like in an hour.
Couple snow storms on the radar .
11F here, cold wind. Going to be in the teens for highs for 5 days. Doesn't look like the next storm is until Wednesday up here and hovering up around 32F then. Not much snow for skiing or snowmobiling around here. Snowed some yesterday, but didn't accum. much of anything.
Got to 18F yesterday a little sun appeared in the afternoon, but was squally all morning. Was a little breezy out of the N.
Moon and stars this morning and 12F at this hour on the porch.
20 ish here, warmer.
Snow moving in tomorrow, maybe 1/2 foot.
That Wednesday storm looks bigger mixed bag and wind but ending in mostly rain on the GFS model.
Had a 2nd of the season woodstove fire in the basement last night, hasn't been much frozen ground around so been staying above 50*in there.
But stiff enough now to do some trail maint. w/tractor.
We got about 3 inches yesterday.
Has dropped to 7F since earlier. Blue skies here, no wind.
Sunday storm will be all snow.
But Wed looks to be snow than turn to rain.
Last year we went through the snow than rain storms.
But seem like mid Jan the storms was all snow or not as much rain to make a big mess.
15F here for the high today. Been burning a little extra wood to keep the fire going to heat the grow tent a little. Means that windows are open. ;D

we are getting that snowstorm tomorrow as well
Storm will miss us up here the guessers say, we'll see. ;D
We are just starting that snow about 20 minutes ago. Supposed to get heavy overnight and taper mid-day tomorrow. Just at 30° right now but very damp and feels very uncomfortable (colder than a well digger). However I am am sitting next to the shop stove now after rooting around in the shed for clamps and it is 75° where I am sitting, only 69 upstairs though. :D
Supposed to get 6-12 with this dumping so it's the first real snow in nearly 2 years. I am just glad the ground is crusted over because plowing would be miserable otherwise.
Nothing here so far. 8F on the porch but the weather app says 3F at the station. It's cloudy. We don't get big snow storms when it's that cold in this area. We can get squalls though. It's funny the snow storms have been so dry, not much accum. It knows how to rain, but the snow storms just fizzle out. :D Almost a month into winter and barely enough to shovel with all the snow combined. :D
Finally got some snow. About 5 inches of extremely wet , sticky, heavy stuff. Going to stink plowing it because the ground isn't frozen yet. Tuesday/ Wednesday supposed to be warm and rainy.
I haven't measured yet, but looks pretty much like a good 12" here and it is 31°. Temp was 25 at midnight and rose steady through the night. This looks to be heavy plowing.
Weather guessers said 10-15in starting around 10 last night through 6pm today. As of 7am
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/18262/IMG_20240107_075756.jpg?easyrotate_cache=1704632229)
5ish in so far. Not snowing now. I am glad to no longer get phone calls to plow town roads, it was a strange AND happy feeling to still.be in bed when they went by this am!
Only around 12F here now and peeks of sun, but mostly clouds. Looks like we missed the snow.
Same temp here 12* but a few inches of snow so far.
Cold and snow. Finished insulating btm floor of the 20' x 30'
garage to R-19 yesterday so after all these years have a warm space to tinker
and woodwork now. 8)
Jetstream is down to the southern tip of Maine. I think NS and PEI and probably southern NB got snow. Dry up this way. Forecast out of Houlton, Maine said it was unlikely we would see snow up this way.
Enjoy your heated shop. ;) Hopefully will be in the same camp next winter. ;D
Maybe 3-5 for us. But saying that I already have about 2 inches and suppose to snow until dark.
The coast may get a foot.
Then 48 on Wed and an inch of rain.
Not a great week for working outside,
I think this is the first frost this morning. Dog were slipping and sliding on the wood deck. It's 31°f
John, I heard they got about a foot in the sierra's today near I80. That near your cabin?
I measured and honest 8" in multiple places when I went out, but this stuff is not doubt compressing under it's own weight. Great snowball and building snow for sure. It turns blue as soon as you pick it up and plowing is 'challenging' with the Mule, but it pushes it. ;D
I started plowing just after 8 then took a break for breakfast, then back at it. Everything is opened up, but it snowed steady and hard the whole time and still coming down steady. I even snow blowed, first time in 3 years, across the back yard (my commute to work) and across the front walk and a bit behind the shop. Remaining is the shovel work I can't get with other methods around doors etc. First real snow in 2 years here. Last year we had one big one that clobbered them up by Bargemonkey, but here we got an inch or less and rain.
I'm pooped, time to do a little shop work, then I'll hit it all again when it gets near dark or stops. I think I damaged a shoulder somehow, but we'll see. It's supposed to get close to 50 on Wednesday morning. >:(
Just looked at the traffic cameras up there on I80.
Ten miles west and 800 foot lower, looks to be at least a foot. Road is wet with slush between lanes and a good bank of snow on the sides.
Ten miles east and a couple hundred foot higher the road is covered with snow, just tire tracks are somewhat bare. At least 2 foot of snow there. I use that location as a good indicator for my property.
About a foot here, temp has been around 24 all day. This storm was really two storms. We had about 6" last night into early morning then it stopped. Late morning started up very hard and dumped another 6" by 4pm. Just very light snow now with a cold wind.
It started here about 2 hours ago, and picked up more heavy about 1 hour ago, maybe a inch down so far, suppose to get more intense on 2 hours and hold for about 4 hours then taper off. Probably 8-10inch in the end. More on this later
No snow here and haven't had any this winter.Just cloudy ,cold and damp almost every day.Kind of depressing and can't make myself go outside and do much of anything but spring will be here before you know it.The weeks seem to go by pretty fast the older I get.
I just did the driveway. I like to do it during daylight.
There is no more then 6 inches of snow.
But it is still snowing. Snow showers until 7 tonight.

im a rookie by this forums standards but I am friends with a few old fellas, one said “I’m so old Christmas comes two times a year” . I laughed even myself can sense that can only imagine at his age(72)
Anyway, the cold has been good to me, frozen ground.
In the summer you got lots of biting insects and ticks are big here, only a tiny window maybe 2 weeks fall then spring of perfect weather to cut in 4 weeks total a year, the rest is annoying or painful imo
Below 0°F again this morning. "Warmer" days later in the week. When the sky is clear, there's no wind and the ground is covered with snow, well, it gets cold.
16F here this morning and nary a snow flake. Too cold and dry for snow to be significant. When it snows we get hardly anything anymore. I can walk anywhere here and the snow doesn't even cover the toe of my boots. The deer are hanging around longer here, no snow to drive them south. Seen one deer track yesterday. There's hardly a deer to begin with. The bears are all in bed though. The woods is full of coyote and rabbit tracks. Been a porcupine around my winter shelter, he has a nice packed down path to the wood pile. :D Rain in store for Wednesday. ;D
Like Wlmedley said, clouds, clouds clouds, hardly a sunny day. Usually Dec-February is mostly sunny and cold, like closer to 0F cold. And normally when it warms up to the 20'sF a big snow storm comes through. :D
As you can see from the data the warmer days have the most snow in a storm. ;)
12" here. I can see the snow coming down :D And I don't care, the mill is put away for the winter. I might plow today--maybe not ;D
I do have to get some firewood out for next year's winter, Will see. ;)
Maybe with the rain coming, I won't have to plow. :D
Temp needle hardly moved in two days. 10*, might have gotten to 15 yesterday. Been poking the wood to the stove(s).
Nice snow, dry and dense, about 6" total. Driest snow
we've seen here in a long time.
The snow never amounted to much, maybe 4 inches. Blew pretty hard though
A new weather alert for Wednesday says 8c and buckets of rain
9* this AM . Still poking the wood to it.
This next round looks to be rough sledding.
8 -12" snow with big wind finishing in rain.
Batten down the hatches. Gas up the gennys.
wind at 22 with gusts to 26 mph overnight with snow. many highways closed overnight due to visibility and snow. half-staff at hospital essential worker. One ambulance crew stuck in Wichita after transferring last PM. Many east of here without power. A nice pretty snow.

Was 12F here this morning, 16F now. Wind from the NW, but light. Sunny for a change, but clouds moving in from the south.
Mentioned the weasel in the chicken coup the other day. Saw one today in my travels, crossing the road with a mouse in his mouth. ;D
The woods up here is full of mice. Was walking along the road a couple weeks ago when the dead grass was all bare without snow. Happened to step off the road into the dead grass in one spot and there were at least 4 mice running out of that into the woods. Lots for the weasels. ;D
Willie's got his wood stove going these days in the frigid cold. Darn cold on a heat pump system and he's only got a trailer. That heat pump is only 4 years old, so it's not like it's 15 years old and out dated. I see real world evidence every day that debunks their praise. :D Good to -25C? You wish!!
Snowed a bunch here blowing hard. Had to drive the tractor to the office. Calving season has started.
We were supposed to get a little snow before the heavy rain started. About an hour ago it started to snow like mad and we already have a fresh inch on the ground and car accidents all over the place (PD and FD are running ragged). I have to go to town for needed supplies, but I may wait just a little bit here. I don't think DOT saw this one coming in the way it has. ;D
Currently snow sticking at the summit with chain controls. Looks like snow/rain mix at my property (5,800'). Snow level to drop down to 2,500'-3,000' by this afternoon with 6" accumulation.
Tomorrow night the big storm to dump ~18" on my cabin. Guessing that will bring the total up to 2 or 3 feet? I'm on a weird pocket for snow. Then more over the weekend. I'll have to pick a good day to go up and snowshoe/sled in.
Yup suppose to get snow then rain here to. With a repeat coming on Saturday. :D
Seems like 20 minutes daylight gained in mornings and night now. ;)
Last night was a green meteor zooming by my bedroom window, and it wasn't all that high in the sky. Flew across the north and went by Mars Hill. Radio just reported on it today, someone else sighted it and called it in. I thought I was seeing things, but I have seen them in that area of sky before. A year and a half ago I saw one blow up to bits in that area of the sky. I thought maybe Rocket Man was testing rockets. :D :D :D
Well the snow is underway here, 22F at the moment. Some wind out of the SE.
Just a couple pictures of snow.. First one is looking out the office door at the snow piles, ours and the neighbors across the street.... The second is the setting sun after I had quit pushing snow and headed inside, probably not going to saw any wood for a while.

24hr operation around here, Doc. :D :D Made bread starting at 5:00 am. Now, I just came in from 2 hrs of shoving wind driven snow out of the drive way. Only had two big drifts, rest bare pretty much. But takes a while with a snow scoop. ;D Now it is raining and the snow is too wet to be moved by the wind any longer. Hopefully be down to bare gravel after the rain. Carry on Amigos. 8)
Already had them cold temps this past week, Red. The coming week no colder, highs around 20F has been the trend. The small creeks actually chilled over this winter. Last winter they was wide open.
We got 6" snow then an inch of rain on top of that so
big mess. almost 50* now with sun out.
Stuff is gonna have to drain before getting on it.
Will clean up tomorrow in prep for the next one Saturday, a similar
mixed bag.
Bomb Cyclone blizzard could cause an Artic Blast courtesy of the polar vortex in the Midwest next week as well as the first real East Coast snowstorm in years
40F here with wind and rain. From what I could tell of the snow, since it blew around so much, we got maybe 3" here.

Red, at first I wondered if you were writing in english, but then I read it 3 times and it starts to make sense, :D but where are you getting this forecast? I am not see it around us at all for the next ten days anyway.
Forecast is for the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania . . but I really hope they are wrong
I wouldn't put much stock in it. No big blizzards for here in the next week, too cold and dry. All I see is squalls on the forecast. Even this storm didn't amount to much snow for us. The biggest storm we've had so far was 4", most were just skiffs. I'm sure west of there a cold blast could shoot clean down to Texas. I think there was one just recently actually. The jet stream is touching on Texas' doorstep right now, that means cold air behind it.
Just like woodroe report.
I delivered to Readfield, then cut across to the blinking light on 17, also in Readfield and looked like no more than 3 inches.
34F this morning, but cooling down into the teens tonight and colder Friday night. Snow Saturday morning when temps climb into the 20's, but rain by supper time and mid 30's and getting to 40F later.
colder here this morning, 19F
looks winter is going to make an appearance for the next week.
So far all I do is start the snowmobile and sniff the 2 stroke fumes.
18° here. with a low of -10 Sunday night.

Getting a second helping of cold dry fluffy snow up to 9 inches overnight then wind. Just going to be a mess.
11 degrees this morning. Looks like that maybe our high temp for the next week or so. Possible blizzard this weekend with temps below zero, 8-18" of snow, and 50+ mph winds.
Spend the early hours of tomorrow getting cattle fed in the trees so they have some shelter from the wind.
20F here this morning, so no extreme cold here yet. You can never go by their guesses on temps around here. They'll say 5F and it will be 20F in reality world. ::) I could tell it was not all that cold because the electric furnace never came on and I never put wood on the fire since 4:00 pm yesterday and it was still 80 degrees in here at 8:00 pm. Snow then rain following for Saturday, not expecting much snow, not lasting very long before the change over. Probably a bunch of wind driving that rain.
We had a heat wave yesterday; it made it above freezing. Back to single digits (°F) by Monday :snowman:
You don't want to be sawing here today! -19C which translates to -2.2F for our southern neighbors. Ram diesel absolutely refuses to talk to me, no block heater and no outside outlet to plug one in. ::) Guess I'll pour a drink and watch football.
Temperature never moved more than 4 degrees today, well below freezing, but not frigid cold, yet. Beautiful sunny day though, and even had to open windows because of too much solar heat. :D
Thermometer here says 14F on the ridge, but the weather station reports 7F. Which I can't imagine. ::) No snow yet. I doubt we see anything much before we hit the 20's by afternoon. Never is. There's no wind yet. Not going to snow all that long either, so won't amount to much to brag about.
Dodged the bullet on this one as the low is passing to the north.
A dusting of 3-6" snow expected done by late afternoon.
Lot of coastal flooding damage from the last one with rain and high
tides combined.
The guys down at N. C. Hunt Lumber Co. in Jefferson were saying some houses
along the coast floated off their foundations.
Good place to buy lumber BTW. 1/2 the price what Hammond
and Ware Butler sell for. Got a tacoma truck load , 750' Ln ft. 1 x 8 T&G @ .70 ft. Got to cover that garage/shop insulation with something right ? Not much character in sheetrock. About an hr. drive each way lol.
They call it camp grade or #4 but some nice looking pieces mixed in.
Might have to make another trip.
I think that was made worst on the coast because we had highest tides plus the wind. I don't think climate change effects the moon, but that will be the narrative. :D
-2°, wind chill -22, with wind gusts to 36 mph. that is dangerous cold for us as this is not a usual occurrence for us. internet was out but fixed with a call. cable out. I will not start my diesel unless needed. plug in and check pool house and camping trailer for freeze mitigation.
We have snow coming down at this time at 30°. Then rain coming in for another messy storm. Did this last Sunday.
We had high winds and snow last evening, turned to rain overnight and now its bak to snow. What a mess.
Lake effects snow predicted for the next 3 days with high winds from cold front coming in 10-20" snow predicted......but they have been wrong before
6 degrees, 30-50mph wind gusts, and no clue how much snow has fallen. Some bare ground and some 5' tall drifts. Still calling for 12"+ more snow thru tomorrow, then lake effect snow for the next week.
20F here now, no snow yet but radar showing it nearby. A little breezy now out of the SE. I can see here for 40 miles, and just a stray flake here now.
Been getting 10-20" of snow every few days up the hill as successive storms pass. Even more up at the summit.
National news last night: In a very concerned and alarmed tone of voice, Kanas may see up to a foot of snow! :o ::)
Rain at 32°. Just went down to get the mail. It's wet out there. 40° later
Snow started around 1:00 pm here. Real fine stuff. 22F here. If it rains at all it will be just before midnight, maybe 10:00 pm they predict. Be done by 2:00 am maybe.

Difference is very few people live on the summit of that hill and probably less than zero of the countries agriculture is up there.
Kansas on the other hand houses a great deal of the countries Ag. Last I knew 22% of the US's fed cattle reside in Kansas. They also slaughter like 10% of the US's red meat. That is a big deal when you talk about significant weather events, that's why it makes the national news. Can cause major disruptions to the food chain, unlike a bunch of snow on a resort mountain top someplace.
Last I read Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa produces nearly 40% of the US's red meat. So large winter storms and subzero weather in those areas have large country wide impacts on meat price and availability.
Chevy,
Thanks for the info. Never thought about that. Never mentioned that on the "News". Just the one sentence.
I know 6" is a disaster in NYC from when I lived back there.
Last week at both Tyson and Cargill meat plants in Kansas workers were stuck at work because the roads where impassible when shifts ended. The plants were idled until it was safe to travel again.
As we know the national news tends to pick and choose their stories. But there is some method to their madness. Next week the headline will be "red meat shortages and prices increases", and the first words of the story will be "last week we told you about the blizzard in America's heartland......
Depending on where you are, some meteorologists mention a little Ag once in awhile. Up here in the potato belt during harvest it's part of the programming for at least 4 weeks to tie in weather with the harvest. Not so much in New Brunswick except for the odd blurp through out the growing season, but in Maine it's more frequent. There is even a program on for 3 or 4 weeks during harvest to help farmers hook up with harvest crews or employment of such. Only time I here anything about animals is when a bunch of horses are starving to death in the winter. Or a barn burned down.
That's it for the snow I guess, freezing rain here now. 23F now.
The Polar Vortex has obviously arrived it will be here for one week
-1° here now!

28F here this morning. Had hardly anything here for snow. I think there's some ice on the driveway for sure. Might need some sand. ;D
I think we will see some single digit cold this week and below 0 by next weekend. No snow storms, one day of squalls mid week. Of course that can change day by day as accuracy is not certain. :D
Cooling off overnight, high today of 34° with 30 right now. Most of the surface water has soaked in around my yard, but the creek is at full bankfull after going well over on Friday. Drove down the road to my freinds place yesterday afternoon and went through two spots about 100' long where the road was under 8" of water. Swamp is full and rolling over the road too. Missed getting clobbered by a tree by a few minutes, 18" EWP snapped off at the 20' level and closed the road till we cleared it. Just normal early winter fun here.
They are predicting a heavy but short squall for just after midday tonight and saying maybe whiteout conditions. They only last about 1/2 hour or so. I might be out cutting some wood around that time. More worried about the 40+ winds that are coming with it.
Just another day is paradise, right? ;D
Yes, already see a squall or two pass over the Mesardis hills in Maine. Was just a handful of flurries here. Had to get sand for around the drive way, patches of ice. The road by here was sanded, and it was ice from shoulder to shoulder this morning. No ice on the trees though. The power held together for a wonder. ;D Temp. still falling here, 25F now.
Looks like we got the singles at night coming, but high noon in the 20's. So that won't seem as bad.
It was -5 when I got up, but now its up to -4. I need to deliver the new dining table I made for one of our fire stations. I'm gonna wait til this afternoon when it should be up to 5.
2 with a windchill of -14 and white out snow conditions.
-4° here also. set a record low overnight I think -10. Scouts are camping this weekend at Trappers.
-18 low over night warmed up to a balmy -16. Tractor jelled up first time since 2003. Thought it was all #1 fuel.... Then I tried to set up the diesel torpedo heater and it wouldn't go added more #1 fuel and some extra antigel to the tank, and then spent some quality time with the wife's hair dryer on the fuel filter and got it broke loose. Ran it a while to circulate the new fuel and additive then I put it to bed.
I need to try to get to a neighbors house and break a trail so they can get a propane truck in. Worried about the fuel in all my stuff now even though I've only put #1 in. I run it mid November to St Patrick 's Day. Feet got too cold,so now I'm warming my toes over the floor vent,....venting ;D..... because I've got several more hours of dealing with this frap today. Haven't been to the office since Thursday morning.
No fun indeed, fellas. :snowball:
Had a rebound here in temps, it's 32F here now. No sun though.
Times like this I'm super thankful for a heated shop. Fed cattle and plowed today and the tractor and skid steer were above freezing and no real concern about fuel gelling or hydraulic oil being like molasses.
Looks like 2° is as "warm" as its going to get here. Lake effect snow is still falling. 30+ mph winds are relocating the snow faster than it falls.
Got a winter storm warning here for tonight and tomorrow. The ground has finally frozen and should stay that way for the next week or so.Was looking forward to cutting firewood but may not if we get much snow.I've got enough for next winter but like to keep ahead and don't like cutting when it's hot.
Well, I guessed right. I went down to cut wood across the road just after noon and had the mule about 3/4 loaded when it started to flurry. The winds weren't bad down there, about 75' lower than my house, so a lot of it goes over. But just as I finished filling the mule the wind really started kicking and trees started slapping each other silly. Time to go. Got up on the road and it was now snowing steady/ Pulled along the back door o the shop to unload some smaller stuff and the ground was still black dirt. When I backed out 3 minutes later, I left tracks in the snow. I left the Mule over by the splitter and came back in the shop. My Mule tracks were already covered over and visibility was about 20'. Total whiteout. 25 minutes later it was done and we had full blue skies. An hour later we went through the same thing. Winds were up to 40 at some points today, calming now at around 15 mph. It feels cold but it doesn't seem to be bad working weather. High today was 34 and it should hit about 12 by morning. Gonna be cold for the next week, won't hit 32 until a week from Monday. Maybe winter is coming?
I came out of the woods at night in a snow squall!!! I had no idea where I was at times. This is a woods road that I have been on for 40 years!!!
Feels warm at -7 now with a little wind that makes it feel like -21. Better than -21 with the wind that makes it feel like -43. The tall boys still go down good after 17hrs of moving snow
Just went out and filled the shop stove and the wind dropped off to nothing. The temp will be dropping through the night and it 24 now, but with no wind, it is a beautiful night. No clouds and the stars are popping out all over. I can live fine in the cold as long as there is no wind.
Just finished the latest round of "path maintenance". We got another 6" last night, so after a cup of coffee. I shovelled the path to the shed, path to the car, path to the chickens and path to the firewood. Nice clear, wind-still morning, 14°F. They say today will be the warmest day this week.
15F here this morning, windy and stars, We had about an inch overnight from squalls, so that needs to be scooped before it hardens up from colder weather. ;D
16° here and looks like no above freezing temps for a week.
Looks like high temps most days will be in the low 20's for a week. No single numbers all day. Yet. But some singles numbers at night.
Pretty similar here this week. Teens for overnight and 20's during the days up until next Tuesday or so. Right now it's 14 outside, 53 in the shop nd 75 at my desk. Time to go kick up the shop stove. Hoping I can get the splitter started today and do a load or two. The ground is firming up, but with all of last weeks water in it, I am expecting some good heaves coming up.
-6° this morning, wind chill is -25°. And the snow hasn't stopped since friday.
Weather app says 2F, but my thermometer says 18F. I know it ain't 2F, because I was outside in it. The air doesn't have the frosty bite for 2F. Something screwy there. ::) Presque Isle, Maine , north of here, says it's 9F up there, so I wouldn't put much stock into it being 2F here. :D Going to warm into the 20's and snow here this afternoon and night. Calling it a blizzard with winter storm warnings. See how stuff changes so quick in 2 days around here? :D Looks like heavy snowfall, but not lasting all that many hrs, so not block buster accumulation. Could be snow blower removal this time though. ;D
10* and calm before the storm. another 1/2 foot snow maybe. And no rain .
Mild temps compared to the heartland.
Funny how we acclimate to the cold over time. In the fall when it hits freezing for the 1st time I'm all bundled up and wearing lined jeans now I go out and fetch wood from the shed with just a single layer and no hat.
Another visit to the lumberyard yesterday. They have shut down the sawing temporarily, can't get enough logs due to the ground being soft and wet.
Mud season in January.
2x4x8 hemlock studs $3 ea. bargain.
How right you are with the temps. 30 in late Sept feels cold. Then 30 in Jan feels nice and warm. :)
Well it's 20° here now and snowing steady. They are calling for 2-4" today, which is just enough to be annoying. I'll have to re-hook the plow and push snow with a load of wood in the back, but it is too much to just leave it and let it freeze. We had 27 for a high yesterday with 13 for the low and about the same or less for today. The ground is firming up where it's drained, but in my swamp it ha a long way to go before one can even walk in there, too much ground warmth.
17 in southeast Texas this morning. Old timer said ain't nothin twix here and the North Pole but a bobwar fence and somebody lef the gap down.
-9° temp windchill is -29°. Not fit for man nor beast out there. At least the snow has stopped and the sun is peaking out. Not supposed to get above zero again today.
We've got a cold snap going on.
It's not crazy cold but the wind will freeze your face off in half a minute.
Something that the Southern "Tropical" Forum members might find interesting is the light pillar effect.
On a really cold night, the relative humidity is super low, but it's so cold that whatever moisture is in the air turns into ice crystals and hangs in the air as 'ice fog'. When street or highway lights come on at night, the light hits the ground snow and reflects upward and reflects on all the ice crystals in the air.
It looks like this:

The daytime version of these are "sun dogs". Ice crystals hanging in the air at high altitude act as prisms and make these sun dogs to the left and right of the sun.

As @chevytaHOE5674 (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=8040) said 'at least the snow has stopped and the sun is peeking out'. It makes all the difference in the world and lifts the spirits!
22F here now, no snow yet, but it's on the radar near by.
I'm familiar with that kind of cold, the kind of day you can also toss water up into the air and watch it freeze before it hits the ground. ;D
Up here if all the trees and weeds are with heavy frost in the morning, we get a warm up within 24 hrs. Not always above freezing kind of warm up though. But -20 up to 20F is quite a jump. ;D
20F is the high today.Got a little snow.Wrecked my car yesterday evening and I'm pretty sick about it.First time I've ever filed a claim with insurance company.Should have cleared driveway before attempting to go down it but didn't.

Ouch!. You musta been clipping along. An expensive lesson.

This Tropical guy finds that very interesting, and beautiful. :)
We squeezed up to the mid-twenties today and are now on the way down to 10° for tonight.
Bummer Wlmedley. That was a hard hit to do that much damage. But trees do not move !!
Andries
RH in Winnipeg running around 75-85%. Not good drying weather, but doesn't take much moisture at 0°F. Good to see your winds are slowing a bit too.

My driveway is approximately 1000' and over half is a fairly steep slope.I have came off it many times with snow on it with various vehicles but this was the first time in this car as we didn't have any snow last year. I guess antilock brakes should have been turned off because by the time I got to the bottom of my driveway car must've been going at least 20 mph and I couldn't make the turn onto the county road. I don't think the tree suffered any damage .
Am I allowed to complain about it being too hot? ;)
Well not really, but it's a bit warm / humid to be pleasant doing much sawing out in the sun. We hit 27C yesterday, and it only dropped to ~18C overnight. Up to 23 so far this morning (11 am)
Some of us will soon be complaining of heat and humidity all too soon up on this end. :D Last year wasn't bad heat wise around here. Rained 4 or 5 days a week though. ;D I only ran AC for 3 weeks in July and put it away. :D
Wind chills here 5 to -15! Low in the morning will be 14! High will be 30 ish. Awfully cold for the Foothills of NC. We get a blast like this a couple of times a year. FWIW, I don't care for it! :D
Ian, you truly are the tropical Forum guy today.
I saw this today and have to pass it along. In my experience, this is a joke and pretty good advice at the same time.

Now finally instructions that I fully understand. :P :D
MM: I apologize for not being able to find similar instructions for operating a block heater.
But then, perhaps there is no such thing in MS?
Windchill of - 10 now feels like nothing compared to -46 we had.
Quote from: Andries on January 16, 2024, 06:23:54 PMinstructions for operating a block heater
My block is warm and will remain so as long as I continue to sit on it.
Our forecast is for 65° next Tuesday. What a difference a week can make. ;D
Or you could just get a big honkin 4WD truck with big knobby meats on it and not pay the weather any nevermind.
I already have that, but it did not raise the temperature one degree.
1 degree above 8) beats 18 below.
I can just copy and paste my last post. It's still cold, it's snowing again and I have more shovelling today.
20F here now, clear and stars shining, somewhat of a breeze kicking up. Maybe 4" of snow. Once daylight comes I'll be able to see if there are some drifts to justify the snow blower. Otherwise it's the snow scoop. ;D Storm fizzled out faster than it appeared. The weather sensationalists. ::)
Lucky so far here on the cold temps. But we have some more coming. But I think the high will be just about 15°, so that is not bad for high temps.
I have about 15° this morning, same as yesterday.
I think about 4 inches of new snow came yesterday.
Wind is blowing a little. That will make it seem on the cold side.
But nothing like what other members have.
Well, I finished cleaning up that mess and just finished breakfast. What's next? :D
18F here now, breezy. They predict down around 0F tomorrow morning, but they have never got it right yet, usually quite a bit warmer, that's how bad forecasting is these days. That might fit someone down in a valley near a brook. Not on high ground, which most of us up here in Royalton are on. Can't farm potatoes and wheat down on swamp land. I guess you could eat cattails, kinda dried and crunchy in winter though. :D
Never got above zero yesterday. -7° actual temp, windchill is -24°. Some new snow and lots of drifting.
Car said it was in the 20's. But a cool day. I drove the car all day and there was still ice on it when I went home. Most times the ice will melt off.
Only got to 22F here. So didn't move much. Could be single digits in the morning, maybe even 0F, we'll see. Down to 15F now. Just built an evening fire, it's 6:30 pm. The sun was out so I get solar heating. I guess I threw in a couple sticks for the grow tent, so the fan would come on now and again. Not too hot a fire, it was 80F in the living room as it was. But have to keep the greens warm, cooler in the basement. ;D
Chilly here now. -12C which is cold. Windy and we have a snow squall watch for 15-30 inches of snow. I went down to drill the ice on the lake to see when we can get out on it. 2" of white ice, then water then 6" of ice under that.
Down to 10F (-12C) here this morning, so it is a little colder than it's been. Don't see any storms hitting here for the rest of the week. Stars are out. No wind. The Presque Isle Stream (Prestile if you're from Maine, comes from Lake Christina in Easton) has shore ice. Open in the middle and ducks can be seen in places. ;D
I have 6° and should get up to 25 today.
Low of 12 yesterday and he high didn't quite hit 25. looks like the same today, 11° low this morning. Maybe some snow tomorrow, they are forecasting it anyway, but no more than a couple inches. Right now the snow on the ground is squeaky. ;D
This is actually my favorite winter weather, clear skies, temp in the teens/low 20's, dry. My only issue if my right foot gets numb in those temps. I had to change boots yesterday because I got just a little moisture in the right one and could not warm my foot up. Likewise, because we food shopped yesterday and ran other errands I didn't really get the shop much above 60. If I can get it up to 70 (air temp) the floor is comfortable for my feet and I can work steady, but 65 or below and it's not so much fun and I am distracted. SO today, the goal is a full days work. I just came back in from kicking up the stove, it was 52, now it's up to 57 and moving steady in just 20 minutes. I'll make breakfast and get to work. It is a little cloudy this morning.
Balmy Zero degrees this morning and the windchill is only around -8°. Still snowing, over 30" of snow since Sunday.
Quote from: thecfarm on January 18, 2024, 06:07:14 AM
I have 6° and should get up to 25 today.
Same but only 8 mi. away as the crow flies ;D
Got two storms cleaned up in one yesterday so 8-10 total.
Didn't bother with that wet crap last saturday 3-4".
USPS quit delivering the mail because access to the box was difficult.
They run rear wheel drive vans now and they are not posi trac so
about as useless as a bull with teats in snow.
Starting to look like winter in these parts. Probably 2' snow in shaded areas.
Poking some hardwood to the stove lately.
Those couple big chunks yellow birch lasted all night.
15F here now, not going to get much warmer today, not even 20F. Sunny and breezy now.
*%!!#*! Snowing some more better get to the tractor so my wife doesn't get stuck after work.
Heat wave today got up to 27 .Danged sight better than 2 above IMO .Supposed to get up to 40 mid next week which no doubt will be rain..
Winter storm warning here again.6" more snow expected and single digit temperatures this weekend.Guess I'll stay close to the stove a few more days.
6F here and a light wind to go with it. :snowball: Stars are out. 80F in here on aspen and fir BTU's. ;D There were a couple squalls yesterday over on the Masardis hills to the west. Never reached over this way. Can see it all from the great room. ;) Won't see 20F for a high today, 15F predicted.
Still tropical here. ::) Down to 22C @ 10pm, with light rain / 100% humidity.
The West Coast of the Sth Island is getting torrential rain (State of emergency stuff). Checking the weather site, Milford Sound was averaging 1" of rain per hour, all afternoon. But that's not actually unusual for there. As the rain band moves North it will be hitting slightly more populated areas. I see SH6 is closed for ~360 km overnight. The web page helpfully suggest that you "take an alternative route" ::)
Yesterday the car also had 6, at my house. I am a hill. As I started down the hill the temp was going down. By the time I got to Mosher pond, maybe a mile away, the temp was down to -3.
4 below and calm, blue skies.
Got 2 stoves running and burning some choice Oak hardwood.
70 deg. difference from inside to outside.
Good snowmobiling, skiing and snowshoeing. Saw 1st bunny tracks yesterday and a fox been barking nearby a couple nights in a row.
Sounds like a hoarse dog.
L shaped house one of the most difficult to heat .The insert manages to heat about half of it by convection but the bedrooms are just a tad colder but not too bad .At zero it struggles but at 25 just idles along very nicely .
At zero the thermostat in the center of the L will throw on the propane every so often if it gets below 74 degrees but it doesn't run very long .At 25 it never comes on .Three sources of heat ,wood, propane and ceiling electric with baseboard in the two bathrooms .It originaly was all electric .I installed the propane including the hand formed duct work which took the better portion of one summer .
Currently at 9F here. The sun BTU's have kicked in for the rest of daylight. Window is up in the bedroom and it's 83F in the great room in the next room. :)
Sun??? What's that? Hasn't hardly quit snowing in the last 7 days let alone seen the sun. Another 8" overnight but much "warmer" at 11°.
Just another day in paradise. ;D
10F this morning, will probably drop a little more by day break. Still a little breezy, enough breeze the last few days for the plow to come bust up the drifts. I had to scoop out some yesterday. That is a little extra work, to scoop cold hard wind packed snow. No effort for a tractor. A walk behind snow blower would just ride over it. So snow scoop it is. Not talking about huge piles of drifted snow in the driveway. But if you leave those spots your driveway is rough and they will likely be ice in the next mild spell. Good exorcise anyway, in the sunshine. ;D That being said, looks like a cloudy Saturday. The weather app has forecast some snow for today and was forecasted 3 days prior, but none of the radio stations mentioned it Friday. I've not seen any snow yet this morning.
As a side not: Generally we are the sunniest spot in the country here in NB. But this fall and winter has been unusually cloudy. We had 3 days of sun this week, which was more than the previous few weeks. :D A cloudy winter is a mild winter for us. A sunny one is a lot colder and low RH.
Temp is actually climbing, and very fine, almost can't see it, snow in the air. It could do that all week and never be able to measure it. That sort of dry snow when it's cold, don't amount to beans. We don't have lake effect here in this region.
We have one day above freezing since the beginning of December. We have nearly 3ft of snow, and the temp this morning was -2°F. But that is all going to change, as we will soon get a blast of mild air from the south. It's goining to start snowing tomorrow, but this will change to rain tomorrow night, and on Monday it's going to rain a lot, maybe a couple of inches--on top of 3ft of snow.
I'm busy today, while it's still cold, getting snow off and away from things--the greenhouse roof for example. 3ft of dry, evenly fallen snow is one thing, but an added 2 inches of rain and 40°...I'm not going to risk it.
Chilly here this morning....-20C or -3F by the looks of the thermometer. Does not reply matter how you measure it...its cold.
12 degrees and lake snow is kicking up from the warm water in Lake Ontario. about 6 inches so far and light bands expected for the next 24 hours. finally some nice light fluffy snow with frozen ground under it for easy cleanup. One more cold day and then back to the 40s.
Seeing the snow buntings this morning eating seeds off the weeds. :) I saw juncos yesterday feeding there also.
20F and the snow is starting to be big flakes now, but not snowing hard. The sun was almost out a couple hours ago.
16F here and got a couple more inches of snow last night.Guess I better go and clean the hill off again. Not planning on going anywhere but you never know and after wreaking my car I'm kind of paranoid about it.If I destroy my truck I'll be down to walking.
Started out in the single numbers, but been about 16 all day for a high. We went out and the car had 18 for a few minutes.
I cut some wood for about an hour. that's enough for me. Just for myself. I don't really have to be out there. Prabably will be dumb enough to do the same thing tomorrow. ;D Suppose to be the same temps again.
Looks like above freezing temps on Tuesday.
Seem like it's been a week that it has not been above freezing. Those small ponds are making ice!!!
Better than last year. Some ice derbys had to be cancelled because of unsafe ice.
Sunshine now and the temperature has dropped to 18F. 🐧🐧🐧
Any of you guys on PC's? Typing Win + . (period) brings up some smilies. At least this works in the Brave web browser. Are those part of the mobile 📳 version of the forum? 🌲🌲🍁🍂
Have a good one. 🌓⭐❄
👀 Well a high of 19 and a low of 12, some bright skies, but no direct sun, then mostly overcast. Not very warm and hard to keep the shop comfy without a lot of stove fussing.
Yes, I have those funky things too, but never knew it before now.👍😎👢🔨🪓🥂🥃🔥 Lots of choices.
The sun actually appeared between the 4" of snow that fell today.
Something like 47" of snow this last week.
Today was 13° but by early this coming week they are saying it could hit 40°.
That's brutal snow. Especially if the wind drives it and it's real cold. As hard as an igloo hut. :D
Stars this morning, breezy, 15F on this side of the island. Can see some more solar BTU's by 10:00 am. I usually put 2 or 3 round sticks in so the fan trips now and again for the grow tent. Any more than that and it's unlivable. There will be a window up today. ;D
Wasn't too bad here today. Had to go and pick up Ms Taylor from a friends place up the coast. Google maps was actually pretty accurate, 3.75 hours each way (167 miles). A bit of slow traffic because of some music festivals etc, so a bit slow in places, but no serious holdups.
Was 30C when we got to Raglan, so it was a short visit, back in that car and crank up the AC again. :D Missed the rain on the way home, but a good thunderstorm brewed up after we got home. Mostly missed us, just a bit of rain and thunder.
We are over a foot now with 2 1/2 ft drifts in front of my pole barn and just are being hit by another band. Nice light fluffy lake snow. 8)
21° on the 21st. We are forecast to see 70° on Wednesday. We can count on the warm Gulf of Mexico doing it's thing when the wind is out of the South.
Its -4 for second morning. Supposed to get above freezing tomorrow and then 3 days of rain. Will be no logs moving here for a while. Probably a good thing.
That was the old joke about the wife who texted her husband that the car would not start and the dash showed a man taking a poo and she was not sure what to do.
-4°
Temperature never moved all day here. Stayed a steady 15F all day long.
Looks like 20's for highs the first part of the week and then around 30F this Thursday and Friday and snow.
Well we were at +1 last night when I got back in at a little after eleven wind had started blowing hard from the South.. Blew the snow back the other direction. Started to get stuck this morning leaving for the office had to fire up a tractor broke a trail it was blown shut by noon spent two and a half more hours in the tractor after lunch. It's as cleaned up as I could get. (Insert picture of a snow pile about as tall as your loader will reach through the window of the tractor. )
See the tractor can be any color and any brand you imagine. :) :) :)
I think it hit 20 today. Above freezing tomorrow.
We are out of the cold snap. :D
I just repeating what all the weather guys were saying. :D
Yes, singles at night, but 15-20° is not all that cold for this time of year.
Low of about 10 tonight then it might hit 34 tomorrow, we'll see. Will gradually warm up as the week goes on a few degrees a day. It is what it is. Today at least we had some sunshine which is always welcome.
8F this morning here on the ridge. The moon was shining in the bedroom window to the north and setting behind the back yard spruce trees. Thursday is full moon. ;D Some places it's 2F this morning as that's what the weather app says it is at the station. Looks like a lot colder tomorrow morning, down below -10 territory, we'll see. ;D
Been printing my own calendars the last two years. The insurance used to send them out, and it was from an agent I've never used. Anyway to buy one they want about $20 around here. Mind cost about $2, considering paper and ink. I don't print photos, just lines, shading and text and I add a tiny full moon for that day. The calendar site adds the holiday text. Can get as Word file, so easy to add the moon, just look up the dates on a moon site. ;D
I have 12 above.
It's warming up. ;D
They are calling for 85° here Thursday. The lows have been in the 30's-40's and the highs in the 60's the past several days (just about perfect). I wish y'all in the glaciated north would keep the cool air coming down south.
21 at 6 AM
13° for the low this morning (now). They say 34 for the high today, we'll see, I doubt it.
I don't know which is more annoying, listening to the Grits Belt boys complaining about the winter heat, or SwampDonkey mentioning how he throws 5 toothpicks in his stove and keeps his house at 85° all day and has to open windows. :D :D ;D
I am just glad my shop stove held well overnight and it's 54° out there this morning, easy to get it back up to temp now. Must have been a better wood mix than the previous night.
85F up here in the great room on aspen btu's and bedroom window open again. ;)
I knew an old lady up the end of the road, she lived to be 100, she stoked the stove before bed and kept the bedroom window open all night. And that was a drafty old place to. She was a hard worker to. In her 80's she painted the clapboards on that old place all by herself. That was no small house. Big old square, 2-story farm house, with an attic 10 feet high in the middle where the flu exits the roof, like most around here, 4 sided roof. She never mowed a lawn, it was all flower garden.
31° this am. just started a fire to take the chill off. but it will be warm enough later today at 38°. the next week will all be above freezing during the day. rain and snow the next two days. we rarely keep snow on the ground this long. We worry more about ice storms in terms of power out and accidents.
OK SD what is the story on your house. I think I have asked before. super insulated, passive solar, heat pump? You cannot just make heat from nothing. :snowball: :)
We have a full week ahead of us that will be above 40°, but with rain virtually every day. After that the rain goes away and the low temps drop back into the 30°'s. No sawing this week but hopefully next week.
Just aspen and fir during the dark hours, which is early evening and early morning. Sometimes if real cold I stick wood in at 1 or 2 am. Might have to late tonight as it's forecast to be going down a lot colder by morning. Otherwise, the sun rays through glass during the day throws a lot of free heat in the living areas. Plenty of insulation, yes. I throw in a couple small sticks of aspen now and again to feed the grow tent. I wouldn't even do that otherwise. It's cooler in the basement, so the grow tent needs a little heat. I keep it about 75F in the daytime in there. The surrounding basement air outside the tent might be 65, a couple degrees either way. :) I put up a window most of the day when the sun shines, sometimes for 2 or 3 hours in the evening to.
Is the stove in the basement. how do you spread heat from the stove? forced air fan? any other heat besides a stove and passive solar. we only open a window if we get carried away and it gets to hot upstairs. we try to keep our doors closed to the bedrooms. we have a trilevel. the basement is not a living area usually, just for exercise or games. maybe in the upstairs bathroom after a shower.
ice storm this morning neighboring fd had their 75' ladder truck do a complete 360 going down residential street. hit a car and came to rest within inches of a house. no one hurt. truck still useable with banged up front bumper. good day to not be at work.

Doc, forced air furnace in the basement. Primarily wood, but for back up it has a 20,000 watt electric add on. I use that some in late spring and early fall. I leave it on 68F all winter. But that is rarely used in winter. I see no need to in winter when I have a mountain of wood, just foolish. Great though if you want to go away for a week. Which would be rare in winter. There are heat ducts to both floors above. Insulated ceiling on first floor that insulates the ducts into second floor. That would be a long way to push air without insulated duct. I have 8 foot ceiling on the first floor and 9 foot second floor, which jumps to 14 foot in the middle of a 32 foot long room. Two outside walls on the second floor go from 6' to 9' in about a 3 foot span. That slope is the roof. I have 2 large living room windows that capture the sun in the living room during winter, but not in the summer. The sun is above the porch rooves in summer. The dormer window up in the great room up stairs is 6' x 8', the winter sun against that makes a lot of heat as well. I cover that window in summer with vertical blinds made of linen. But also in the winter, if I'm working around the loom I have to close the blind to see, but it is also hot with the sun beaming bearing down on a bald head. :D The floor loom is in the great room, it is 8' high with a 'draw bridge' added onto it. That room was planned around the loom. ;D
Not real cold this afternoon, 28F, overcast, window is up and still 78F in the great room. I put a little wood in for a low fire for the grow tent about 5 hrs ago and I have not heard the fan for about 2 hrs now. If I wanted, I could trip the fan switch to manual and blow heat off that low fire all afternoon. But that's way too hot for me. I don't have to sit in misery. :D
ok so passive solar, forced air, electric back up, with a wood stove. is it on the ground floor (woodstove)? is that why you run forced air in the basement? are you saying that running the fan on manual gets heat to the grow tent in the basement from the stove on the ground floor. does all the rest cycle off when the wood stove is going? If you cannot tell, I am having trouble understanding why your house gets overheated on a regular basis. none of my business, but a good problem to have in the winter, I guess. :) must be a great design and quality craftsmanship.
is the forced air gas? or wood or wood boiler. sounds like an efficient setup.
My fire went out today and probably will not be re-lit until next Monday.
33° and started down. wood fire in the house and shop. nice to feel and look at. lots of cottonwood and ERC scrap.
I had 37° today!!!!
Not a lot of sun.
There's no reg. wood stove in the picture. There is only a forced air furnace in the basement, no other stove. It has a 3.75 cubic foot combustion chamber. That has a side unit with the electric element. Then of course the windows and the sun during daylight. We never had much sun yesterday, but the temperature jumped 23 degrees and it never went down much last night, maybe a degree. But it is suppose to drop like a rock into the negatives tonight. There's no natural gas lines out in the boonies. Gas of any kind or heating oil is way more expensive than electric.
28F this morning.
Mild sunny morning, 38°F. It's amazing how fast snow melts when there's a stiff mild wind. Of course there's water everywhere now.
I have 30 at 5 this morning!!!
34 at o-dark thirty .My house stays nice and toasty but it doesn't do it on 5 little pieces of cotton wood a day .I wish it would though because toting in that heavy as lead oak is about to wear me out . I figure I've got around 6 more weeks of wood burning but I'm going to run short so it's off to the woods again .
On the heating note, I built a fire around 4:30 am. There were coals, but not many. Before that the last wood was added at 7:00 pm and was a bit on the roasty side for awhile. I'll drop 2 or 3 sticks in around noon for the grow tent and no big fire until after 5:00 pm when the sun goes down. I am seeing lots of bare sky this morning, who knows for how long. It's not going to be hard to coast along today anyway since it isn't all that cold. If it looks like the cold they have predicted coming tonight, I will probably stick some wood in at 1 or 2 am tomorrow. You never know, a lot of their cold predictions are on the fickle side of things. Don't put much stock in what we tell ya, just wait and see. :D
Blizzard out there now, nobody said anything about that for today. :D Must be squalls ahead of that cold front coming in. Temp has dropped 4 degrees since daylight. Suppose to drop into the teens by noon. Then dry cold.
Rain last night, 56° and rising this morning. No more cold or fire until next week. :)
Thanks. So, what we call a "wood furnace" that is forced air in the basement with the grow tent and a backup electric heating element. Does the furnace run with power out? do you have backup generator or batt. with inverter to power the fan? sounds like you are set. here, a lot of the wood furnaces are forced air, but outside and plumbed in the ducts with a gas furnace. LP or NG. Not as much fuel oil here as in the northeast. NG is the most common heat source here with direct forced air or boiler with water heat exchanger or radiant floor.
I routed one duct that was in the utility area in the basement with a piece of flex duct into the tent. The tent will hold the heat pretty good. Has Mylar lining. The power here is wired for generator power, just a secondary box wired up with all the stuff you want to power when the switch is pushed. If need be, I can still heat without any power source, just radiant and convective. If the fan is off for instance, you can feel convective heat from the ducts. You just remove a side panel on the furnace to cool the furnace. Years ago that is what we all did with forced air furnaces. In fact the first furnaces here were not even forced air. They had a big square steel grate in the floor above the furnace for the heat to rise up. But you always had a kitchen wood cook stove to. The thing with wood or any heat source, make it central. If you have a heat source on the far end of the house. that doesn't at least blow heat through duct, the other end is going to be pretty cool if your only relying on radiant heat. That is the flaw with a lot of places, drying to heat the far end of a place from the other end. That's one darn cold set up. No wonder your cold and having to keep the stove stuffed. On heat pump that is even worst than wood. It's 75F near the source and 60F 30+ feet away, cold bathrooms, cold bedroom. Pretty soon the place is patched together with heat sources in every corner instead of doing it right to start with. ;D
The skies cleared here after the squalls passed, it's 85F in here and the sun is melting snow on the steel roof on the south porch. 17F out there right now. Sun has power. I ain't putting no wood in until dark, grow tent be darned. ;D
Yesterday snow shoeing on the woodlot revealed two moose were strolling through. Never saw them, nor any beds in the snow. But there are lots of softwoods to bed in under and I only shoed through about a 1/3 of the woodlot on my buggy trails mostly.
Warmed up to 50F today.Still quite a bit of snow on the ground.I don't mind cold weather but the older I get the more I hate snow.We normally get around 30" here each winter according to the weather man.Now calling for 3" to 4" of rain through the weekend. At least maybe that will wash the salt off the roads.
I have 28 this morning.
Looks to be almost 30 or a little above for a high all week.
Had around 30F degrees here for 3 days, still 30F this morning. Never got warmer than 33F, never dropped below 28. Perpetual cloud. However, a high pressure coming down out of northern Quebec is going to drive the temps to sub zero Tuesday. Right now we are at the high, temps drop the rest of the day here. Then it is going to bounce back Wednesday. Looks like rain/snow mix for Thursday and Friday and right around 32F. Snow squalls Saturday though Monday. Joy! :D
Same here, it's been warm, even got near 50 one day. I let the house stove go out about the time the forum shut down and only just re-started it last night, but might leave it die out for the daytime. Too warm in the house. Been very grey and damp though, we had some inches of wet white slop since yesterday morning that mostly melted soon after it landed, but we have 1/2" of slop remaining now. Temps will taper down a little this week, but not too much. 20's at night, 30's daytime. Hoping for some sun to clean things up a bit. Slop everywhere.
It's just good to be back and check in with y'all!
We haven't seen the sun in 9 days and got 3 inches of rain in that time. It got down below freezing last night which it also hasn't done in 9 days. I hope that means the clouds have cleared and I will see some sunlight today.
34 this morning so I have a flicker going.
Funny, it's 34 here this morning so I am letting the stove go out. ;D
38 here and got about 5-6in of the white stuff. Got the driveways cleared around 6 this am, I think its about done for now. Rest of the week is looking clear, might take the plow off
Mysterious light shining thru the trees

That happened here too but it feels like it was a year ago ;D
Yesterday hit 71 and the same prediction for today and tomorrow. Wednesday the new front coming in with highs in the low 50s for the rest of the week. Snow in the high country with my cabin on the rain-snow line.
Temps have been falling here. Not suppose to reach even 20F tomorrow.
I think the Androscoggin river in Jay is frozen over more now than all of last year.
Swamp Donkey, how did you make your name turn green?
No idea Doc, must be something on Jeff's end.
5F here this morning, that'll stiff'n ground and water in a hurry. ;D
It's -6 at the weather station that feeds the weather app (Wicklow).
I think because he's a Forester.
For this area, 2022 and 2023 was above normal and 2006 was way below normal for snow. Debunking their current gospel. 2008 was way above normal, to which they have severe amnesia. Not going to mention that though. :D To add, it is going to snow or squall for the next week starting Thursday, Happy Feb 1st. :D
I had 16 when I got up this morning.
Had an inch of snow come in the night on Sunday. Places South of us got 3 inches and more.
Most times we get the 6 inches and they get 2 inches of snow.
I think you are right Ray!
It's been weird. Two weeks ago it was -20C. now at 8am it is +3 and predicted to be 8 by mid afternoon which is close to a record. Most of the snow in town is gone, If we get another cold snap there will be real problems.
Road restrictions go on here at midnight, a month and a half to the day earlier than last year.
Neighbors here have been skidding wood across the pavement behind a Timberjack for the last week. Yarding a 1/2 mile up from the woods on a farm road :D
Today's high is 17F, going to be about as cold tomorrow as it was this morning, but warming into 20's and snowing for 2 days. I suspect closures start here on March 11th or 18th.
Quote from: thecfarm on January 30, 2024, 05:09:59 AMI think because he's a Forester.
And I thought it was because he's north of the border. :)
4F here on the ridge (-12F at the weather station), kinda cool out there. :D
I have 6° this morning. But a high of just above freezing today. Not bad.
No storms for at least a week.
I can remember when we got all of our snow in March one year.
We are only suppose to get one of them 2" snow storms (Alberta slipper) here the next 2 days and up to 32F for high, then drop back cold for the next 3 or 4 days and not above the 20's for highs.
Been no mild January, maybe 6 days barely above freezing, but not severe cold much except a few -12 to -20F nearby, but not here on the ridge. I've seen February turn colder and a lot more snow, right on through middle March. :D Last year the snow came in February and the year was above normal accumulation by 24 inches.
We had some very light freezing rain off and on here on Monday morning and was never warmer than 32F.
0 or 32 here in the now tropical part of northern ontario
Have hardly seen the sun for a month.I miss it.
No storms in sight!!! Well for 8 days.
I have 20° this morning.
We have had no below zero temps this year. And no cold weather for even 2 days straight. Yes, been in the single numbers, but by high noon double digits.
Seem like last year about this time we had one cold day, Seem like it was -12 or -14, but that was for one day. It was on a Saturday too. I remember that, because I have to work one Saturday a month and I worked that day.
No singles numbers for temps coming up and most days are above freezing.
24F this morning. Snow coming by afternoon here. There's a freezing mist out there right now. Just came in from my 4 mile and was wondering what that dust was on my glasses. Fine mist.

Good Memory. Yes it was the first Saturday in February last year. 18 below here that night and with the 20+mph winds it gave a wind chill of -40°F. Won't see that this year. I was away at a music event, same as this year, and the shop stove went out. Took me 3 days to get the building warmed up again.
Memory, yea right.
It's a warm 28° this morning.
Old Greenhorn, thanks for the degree tip.
30°F here this morning, 3 inches of snow to clean up.
Going down near 0°F at night here for the next week. Don't see nothing mild about that. :D
We have forecast for high 30's night and high 60's daytime for the next 10 days. I know this will change because it is too early for Spring.
36° here now with a low of 34. We will see clearing skies with mild temps in mid to high 30's over the next few days. I am the medic at a music fest this weekend and weather likes this makes it easier in some ways, but I get more outdoor injuries when it's nice out. Better than the -18 last year.
Temps have been falling, dropping to the teens tonight and near 0° at night for the next few. 26° with light snow falling.
Hey, almost 6:00 pm and still daylight, dusky. 🐧⌚⏳
65 and daylight!
No body has mentioned the "ground hog" today.
He didn't see his shadow so early spring.
30 years ago today, I brought my sawmill home from WM NY to MA. I always remember that because it was ground hog day.

You forgot to hook the safety chain eh Jim? I haven't done that since yesterday. :)
Sunny day in central UP, 40s! road restrictions on class B county roads!

Da ground hog was right on this year for da UP. Spring was already here a couple weeks ago. About 3 months early.
Just came in from feeding of the OWB and the deer. Might be 28° but that wind came up and it feels kinda cold out there.
But the temps for next week look good. One night 10° but the high are 25 and above.
Friday looked like this..
20240201_141515.jpg
The tiny wisp of cloud over the top of the Mt is a sign of incoming weather. So that was Thursday. Friday and today we have random rain / thunderstorms. Next week forecast looks fine and pleasant temps.
16F here this morning, had 1/4" of light snow yesterday. Not above freezing for highs here for a week. NOAA says we are 5 degrees F above the normal for January. When you look at Feb 1981 for this region, it was 13 degrees above normal. That year we had leaves in February on the locusts. Several days in the 50's all month.
Only sign spring is coming here is the lengthening days. :D
30° and we should see some sun today!!!! And not just for a few minutes either. That will seem odd.
51º this morning with a South wind which says rain for us today and tomorrow. Clear next week but rain returning next weekend.
That is not the best for me because I have a customer that can only work Friday & Saturday that we have been trying to saw since mid-November. The customer is probably more patient than I am.
It's 15°F here now with sun. Possible high of 23°F. North breeze is picky.
Suns out today and the ground is firming up some.Gives a fellow a whole different outlook.Going to put some wood on the porch and logs on the mill deck.
We just spent two full hours making a 45 minute trip because of a 4 vehicle rain related wreck on the interstate. 2 cars, an RV, and an 18 wheeler. :-\
Here it comes. Pineapple Express. Down south up to 8" of rain. Up here 2-4" around Sacramento. Up the hill at my cabin property, 2-4 feet of snow by Monday.
8°F here this morning. The moon is over the cow shed. 🎶🐄🌓
21 this am with sun, high should be around 38. We need these cold nights to try and keep a bit of frost in the ground. I bucked and moved firewood logs into my mud season stash area yesterday. I was fine till about 4pm, then started getting a bit of thaw on top in the sunny spots
Another sunny day. It's 30° and full sun!!! Did I say that twice. ;D
Really still no storms in sight. Looks like an inch coming later this week.
19F here at noon and a blustery north wind. 🌞❄🌬🌬
12F here this morning, suppose to warm into the 20's by noon and snow this afternoon. Not a big storm, just light stuff.
No storm for the next week? :D You wish. Big weekend storm coming, rain in with it. We never had any real rain all January here, just them two days of a freezing mist. The 10" or so of snow we have on the ground has no crust or layers in it. My ski pole can go right to the bottom onto frozen mud.
Meanwhile, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality has declared a local state of emergency as the region grapples with a winter storm that could bring as much as 5 feet of snow by the time it passes. :xyxnervous: Biggest snowstorm in 20 years. Everything is shut down and told to stay home.
I not seeing much of a storm in my area.
Something coming in next week at this time, but right now only a few inches.
But that can change.
In fact, when I posted that it was only snow showers and an inch. Looks to be more now. But there is rain-snow one day.
20° here now.
cloudy and just below freezing. We just had 2 beautiful sunny days. 1st real sun we have seen this winter.
With that big snow in Cape Bretan, I'm guessing a few collapsed buildings in the aftermath. Insurance don't cover snow load. smiley_thumbsdown It's one thing to have multiple storms build up, but one big storm is a different scenario.
We didn't see the rain or snow as predicted but wind gusts to 70mph did take a lot of trees out. Spent 2.5 hours at my buddies house clearing his driveway. He had thumb surgery so a one handed electric chainsaw guy is not very productive ! :coolsmiley:
I think we are in for a mild stretch, no record warm, but I'm seeing one or two house flies coming out of stasis, maybe even an Asian lady bug. Looks like 30's for highs for the next week. No 40's yet. ;) Looks like stormy weather from Sat through Monday coming.
22°F this morning.
Our mild stretch is over for now. Back to single digits at night and maybe 20F during the day. Should get a couple of inches of new snow later today, which will cover all the dirt and grime that has emerged over the last week.
-10C this morning. A beautiful sunny morning here today!
I had a mosquito buzzing yesterday. :uneasy:
@tule peak timber are you getting pounded by the rains there in Southern Cali? Hope not too much.
Today on the snow shoes I saw a grouse walking about. Besides that, coyote, hare, porky and squirrel tracks. No moose sign for 3 weeks. Back home I saw a weasel scurrying about the yard. Don't have to even leave home to see game. I'm a 1/2 mile from any brook. :D
Mostly overcast here, but easy on the wood stash. Very low fire, throw in a couple little rounds every so many hrs. 80° is plenty warm I think. smiley_smug01
Sunshine and Blue Sky here. :sunny:
Sun came out bright and the drive way gravel started softening up today. I think it got to 33F. Water on the road from melting ice and snow to. Suppose to drop to about 8° tonight, but jump back up to 30's.
Looks like the high 30's for a couple more days. then maybe it will hit 40 and maybe a high 40 one day.
18° here (9° in low land) this morning. Might barely get to 32° today. Saturday and Sunday might touch on 40° here, then below freezing all next week with 20's for highs.
And the days are getting longer on both ends. :sunny:
I really notice it at 5:15 when I get home. No need for a light to find the door to get into the house.
A heavy winter fog has moved in over the land. 💨🌫🌫
Looks to almost 40 or a little above until that storm on Monday-Tuesday.
The guy I have been listening to for about 40 years, is not saying much about it. Could be a good size storm, maybe not much. Depends how it tracks as he says.
20°F here this morning. That weekend storm looks like just mild days in the 40's here now, possible showers Friday or Sunday. Never trust long range guess work. :D And the drive way will be about all melted out here in a couple more days of sun. Amazing how the ground can get so soft quick and barely 32°F. February sun is quite hot, even though the air is still cold. ;D
I'd sure like to know where that thermometer is for the weather station, says 9°F this morning. Says 3°F in Presque Isle, Maine. Says 10°F in Woodstock, NB. I'm glad I'm on the ridge. :D
Seems like what Jeff gets, MI, I get. I've seen you talk about snow or no storm and I will get some and you won't get any.
I'm not talking about lake affect here either in MI. :Wow:
I don't know where this storm is coming from.
We are due for a good size storm. I don't think we got much more than a foot in one storm last year.
But my memory is not the best now either.
Had 40° yesterday and looks like it again!!!
Not much sun today.
They are still watching that storm on Monday and Tuesday.
Each morning I look at it changes. Same each night on the news too.
Just might get my wish after all. ;)
Looks like some rain coming in Saturday.
Porch thermometer said 44°F here yesterday. But I think the actual was 36°F. I know when the sun hit that side of the house, snow was melting fast on the porch roof. But when out in the yard it was not melting with as much fervor. In front of the garage doors it remained solid and not melting, so it definitely was not 44°F.
See stars here this morning, but suppose to be cloudy and maybe a 38°F high. Called for some rain to.
22°F here now, weather apps says 6° and Presque Isle says 2°F. I checked my second thermometer yesterday and it read the same as the porch one. That is a big gap in temperatures within 30 miles. :D
60º but the rain forecast has kept me off of the sawmill today and tomorrow. :-\
33°F with rain and temps climbing. May hit 40°.
Foggy here now. We might see some sun by noon. Maybe 45 today.
Temps are cooling off for next week.
Just a shower move through, thunder and all. Kinda odd for this time of year.
We hit 62 today and absolutely no snow left. Mud is drying up and I have never seen it this warm the 2nd week of February. Loving this El Nino pattern. :sunny: Supposed to drop for a couple days then warm right back up again.
Yeah weird day for sure. Didn't know rain was coming, BEAUTIFUL up until mid-afternoon. Filled my gas can checked the saws and was going to start the mushroom log harvest, but the landowner was not around, so I took a pass for the day. Was working in the shop when I got a phone alert from my weather ap saying rain would start in 15 minutes, so I covered the firewood I was trying to dry surface moisture off of. Rain cam in and wind hit 25 and ripped the tarp off the wood, oh well. It got damp again. ffcheesy I re-covered it.
Now I see they are saying about 8" of snow coming Tuesday, but temp right at 32° so that will be a bear to plow. This ain't my grandpa's winter.
We are at 70º now but will drop into the 30º's for a few days beginning Tuesday. fire_smiley
Got to 38°F here yesterday, but only dropped down to 36° this morning. I saw a few stars out earlier. Going back to winter on Tuesday. We've had these 30's spells in winter all my life. Always goes back cold and always more snow. I can only remember two years that didn't happen. March into mid April can dump 3 feet of snow in my experience. :D
Close to 50 here yesterday. Warm snap feels like spring.
Nice reprieve. Nice website overhaul, working great , Thank you !
It's 40° all ready this morning.
Even have some sun to enjoy!!!
The yard around here today. 40°F here

Its been warm here with some cool to cold nights for the last few weeks. Now they are saying we will have 2-5" of wet heavy snow tonight and tomorrow morning. I hate wet snow. I will have trees bent in half.
I certainly hate wet snow to, if it's more than 2". I gotta move it with more than a shovel somehow. :D Looks like below freezing here for a few days ahead.
Funny looking dog. ffcheesy cute but funny looking.
I did put some wood ashes on one side of the driveway coming up. I have a 500 foot driveway and just did where I come up the hill, maybe 75 feet. That area is down to dirt and one more place too. But the driveway does not get much sun.
Looks like tomorrow will be the end of the "melting",40°. Next 10 days are mostly below freezing at high noon.
Looks like Tuesday storm has been upped another half inch. Now we will get an inch and half.
The towns around here posted the roads last week.
That is early, but that's how the temps are now.
They are predicting 8-12" of wet snow Monday night into Tuesday morning. Like SD I hate the heavy wet crap be especially on soft ground. We should only have a low of 32° through the storm and they say heavy banding is likely so possible that the snow will load trees and cause outages........
OOORR.... It could be rain and nothing else. Or just stuff that melts when it hits. ffsmiley
They really don't know, do they? :wink_2:
This is the channel that I trust the most.

It may say Portland, that's the tv channel, I changed it to my area.
Then this one.
underground (https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/me/chesterville)
But I just said something to the wife about the storm and she is saying 10 inches.
Guess I will have to watch the news tonight.
Presque Isle, Maine 8 day (https://www.wagmtv.com/weather)
My go-to is the Underground linked to by thecfarm.
Most often right-on and seldom has the hype and "fear" with over-prediction that so often comes with the liberal media (who just seem to want to control your life, one way or another).
That Farmington link is the one I go to the most. Just don't have the hour forecast.
That was before the computer days.
I listened to that channel when I was working 4 days off and 4 days on. We would plan my days off by that forecast. We wanted to go shopping, might just as well do it on a rainy day, so I could work outside the other 3.
I worked that job for 25 years. They got it right most of the time.
Just checked the underground weather, back down to an inch of snow.
Looks like more of a costal storm.
Portland may get 10 inches. The more you go inland the less you get. I might get 3-6 inches.
Yeah, like beenthere said about some weather stations. There definitely is an hysteria element with all the drama. This winter I've noticed about 90% of the predictions fall short. Often diminished to nothing within 24 hrs of the event. :D There are a lot of people who simply have no experience at forecasting at all. I bet they couldn't even read a tephigram.
29°F this morning.
We have already had our high temperature for today so it is downhill from now. The forecast is for 32º tomorrow morning.
We got about 10 minutes of golf ball size hail last night 1:30 but I forgot to take a picture. I have not assessed damage yet.
Magic, east Texas had rain, hail, and tornados, which is what came your way, closest tornado to us was about 6 miles. Nasty stuff, some hail as big as a baseball.
That's some size hail. We can see hail here in May or even July, any time of the year really. But winter hail is not as bad as summer hail for us. It's not that frequent for us, but might hear about it every year within 50 miles of us. We never had many thunder storms here last year, never had the heat for very long.
Quote from: Magicman on February 12, 2024, 08:50:03 AMWe got about 10 minutes of golf ball size hail last night 1:30 but I forgot to take a picture. I have not assessed damage yet.
The insurance adjuster has been here. Yup, much damage and I will need a new roof.
Ouch!! That was some storm.
Dang Lynn, truck damage too or do you park inside?
We were supposed to have rain and snow all day today. Snow was supposed to be 2-4". Instead what we got was nothing. Not a drop of rain or a single flake of snow. Plus it is 10 deg warmer than they said it would be. They haven't gotten a forecast right this winter. Like terribly wrong.
Got to 36F here, but temps are going down colder the rest of the week. Like they say, 'we'll see'. :D One thing that happens in any given winter since I've been around is that it is quite a bit warmer here on the ridge over night then places near rivers or creeks. Cold air flows like water.
The car and truck were under the carport but the RAV4 picked up a ding. I did not opt to have anything done with it.
The front yard is littered with green fresh Pine straw, but it should not be enough to cause any damage to the trees.
I have loaded the fireplace insert with three logs so we will have a flicker in the morning. I should be able to load one log every couple of hours to keep a nice glow. fire_smiley
Looks like Maine may not get nothing. Might be just a little on the bottom edge.
Sorry Greenhorn, looks like you will get it. Looks like a wet snow. smiley_thumbsdown
Looks like a couple snow squalls is all we'll get here.
They dropped our forecast from 12" down to 1-6" or maybe less, probably less. ffcheesy
Lynn, really sorry to hear about your hail and the house damage. I got caught in one of those summer hail storms and my 2500 had the pock marks in it until I sold it. Hail was big enough that is blew right through the tonno cover on the bed. Looked like somebody hit it with buuckshot. I thought the windshield was gonna break. I got off the highway and drove under the nearest group of trees for some protection. Nasty stuff that.
20°F here, calm and stars. Not going to get above freezing today.
1° difference between here and the weather station this morning.
I have just about 30 and the wind is blowing. No really above freezing temps for a week, then the mid 30's.
Yesterday afternoon they were saying 8-12". Last night 3-5" and this morning 1-2". Yesterday they canceled school for today. ffcheesy
It started snowing a few minutes ago, temp at 31 degrees.
37° and clear blue sky here. We missed the forecast 32° and I am happy. Looks like we will be drying out until the weekend. ffwave
24 hours ago the forecast was calling for 8-12" here with up to 14" or more up at Barge's place. Yesterday afternoon I went through the motions and put the Mule on the charger, (battery is on it's last legs) parked it in front of the shop door and set the plow angle so it was ready to go. Doing that first blank pass in 12" snow can be challenging for that little machine, but after that it's good.
So I overslept this morning and woke up during the height of the storm. I tell you, it is snowing so hard you can almost see it! In fact it's accumulating at such a rate that it is already covering the roots of most of the grass and soon will be reaching a nearly measurable amount! There is such a pile of snow on the Mule windows that one almost can't see through them! ffcheesy ffsmiley
Man when these folks ( and computers) blow a forecast, they don't mess around. The storm is way south of the forecast and no doubt the folks in the city will get some decent stuff, but it's much warmer there. In Hartford they are saying it may completely cover the grass! ffcheesy
It just got up to 32 here, exactly what they forecast over a week ago.
Funny when I first saw the projected conditions on Friday I looked at the temps and figured it would be one of those storms where it snowed all day but melted as it hit the ground. The experts were all getting excited and ringing the bell. Guess I was wrong too but the result I predicted was the same. Barely white ground. Nothing to plow. Sheesh!
The guessers say there is a threat of snow for the weekend. We'll see. ;D
nothing like preparation to throw off a weather forecast! :snowball:
We missed it too. Storm went the way they said it would. Last week it was going to hit us.
Don't mind the snow, but hate the wet snow. That's what causes the problems.
12°F this morning. A little overcast. About 82°F in here on aspen BTU's. ;D
Won the lottery, received paperwork on money I inherited from my aunt. When divided up among a dozen nieces and nephews and several organizations and charities it's not huge money but still significant 5 figures. I'm not celebrating until I see the cheque, but......... ffcool
I have 20° and the wind is really busy out there. That will make it feel cold.
Maybe Friday for some white stuff.
At least it will be all snow this time.
Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are getting slammed with this one.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/storm-closures-1.7114690
We are back to 37° this morning and I did light another flicker which will probably be the last one this week. Blue sky and we should get into the low 60°'s this afternoon.
Been a couple passing squalls this morning and still only 14°F here.
I have no idea what the wind chill factor was for sure, news said 4°. I betcha they was just about right too.
That wind made it feel cold at 20°. I needed some eggs from the store. I waited for the dust storm to go by before I went into the store. smiley_smug01
Then I hung onto my hat so I would not have to chase it across the parking lot. ffcheesy
The wind is suppose to die down some tonight.
Feels like a heat wave at 18° and no wind. ffcheesy
Should get up to 32 today.
The Androscoggin river that I cross is unthawed again. Two weeks ago it was froze over. We had them temps in the 40's last week just about every day, and that did the ice in.
Looks to be another year of no ice jams.
It never got above 16°F here yesterday. We had squalls all day, but no accumulation. Then last night it warmed to 18°F. The wind is still howling here. I see stars out there. I have not seen the moon in a week in starry skies. It must rise before dark and set way before day break, and I'm usually up pretty early. Next weekend is full moon. That elusive moon. :D
Doesn't unthawed mean frozen?
It's been a strange winter here. Mostly unseasonably warm, but with hints of what it should be. It's been in the 50's to near 60 all week. Now they say 1-3" of snow tomorrow. Even if it snows, it won't stick because the ground is way to warm.
@12:30 pm here, still only 22°F and breezy. :snowball:
Getting pretty high winds here but temperature is 60F. Supposed to snow tomorrow night.
Don't be like my boss at the hardware store. smiley_thumbsdown ffcheesy
I will say frozen or not frozen from now on. :wacky:
Decisions, decisions. When old like me and unemployed you are continually faced with really tough decisions. Today's forecast was for the warmest day of the year, sunshine, and no wind. Should I go exploring with Hank, my dog, chase walleye, or ride my bicycle. I chose to ride my bicycle on the beautiful Razorback Greenway here in NW Arkansas.

Found these on the trail so I can pronounce Winter is gone and Spring is here. No more snow or any of that other foolish stuff.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10125/IMG_3897.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=352465)
Lots of kids, dogs, runners, and bicycle riders out today.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10125/IMG_3898.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=352467)
The Greenway goes around one community lake and past a couple more. Fisherman were out and I stopped to watch for a few minutes. Crappie were biting!
Tomorrow another day, another tough decision. ffcheesy
Meanwhile, 15°F up here. :D :snowball:
I have 22° and snow. Not even an inch yet. But suppose to keep snowing until about 9 this morning.
But the hourly report claims snow showers for 3 hours too.
Might even see the sun by 3:00.
Looks to be another storm next Friday, a week away.
Below freezing for about 3 days.
Forecast was updated for here and we aren't going to get anything at all. Dry through the weekend they said this morning and mostly sunny. Cloudy today. It's down as low as 8°F in some local areas this morning.
The moon has been rising well before dark. Last night at 6:00 pm it was directly over head. So it set a long time ago.
1" of snow and 25.. But in the HOT ROD shop, it's 70 ffcheesy ffcool
I did get your pm cfarm. Just had a hard time getting back on here. I hope all is fine with you two.
Well last evening we had a short clipper run through for a few hours and left a blanket of white on everything. Temp is 30° right now, but the real story is the wind. Holy cow flop! It's been sort of windy all day yesterday at 10-15 MPH but in the early morning hours it really ramped up and even woke me out of a deep sleep with 45 MPH gusts and steady wind at 20-30 mph. Trees are slapping and moaning all over, and a few are snapping. Power outages around the area with one about 1/2 mile from our place. Supposed to continue like this into the afternoon.
The shop seems to be holding temp, but now I have to see if I can get it into the comfort range. That wind really wicks the heat off. The good news is it's only partly cloudy for the moment.
To whom it may concern: Thawed or I thawed? Sometime ago I had the same opinion as firefighter. It was suggested to look in the Webster's dictionary. Surprise!!!!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-tzTsbWswY
Peter, I am fine. Just checking in on you.
We had a hard wind the other day. But no loss of power that I know of.
Had maybe 2 inches of snow last night and the wind came up around noon. Not a strong wind, but at 25° it feels like a strong wind. :wacky:
I think that is the first storm in February.
Maybe a storm next week.
Doc— Liked your thawed reply! I typed unthawed, but me Ipad said I tawed. Anyway Websters says thawed and unthawed are the same???? ffwave
I got about 1 1/2" of snow on top of a little sleet. We had thunder and sleet for several hours. I drove to physical therapy in pretty sketchy conditions and while enroute I saw a cell tower get struck by lightning.
Snowing pretty hard here. Looks like a couple inches on the ground now. Glad I loaded back porch with firewood today while ground was fairly dry. Be muddy in a few days.
Conflicting reports. Looking at the radar, I should be getting rain turning to snow tonight. I have seen estimates of 1" , 2-3" and 4-5". Its supposed to be happening right now, but I just looked outside and nothing is happening.
Maybe they should try AI to predict the weather. Then we can find out if AI works or not. :huh?
Fake news wasn't enough? Now you want fake weather? I thought that's what our local forecast offices have already been doing for 50 years now. ffcheesy ffcheesy
12°F and stars shining. Weather app shows 8°. -2°F in Presque Isle, Maine. Again temperatures are all over the map within 20 mile radius. :D Have not had any accumulative snow here since the first 2 days of February.
We had about 4 inches yesterday and woke up to another 3 inches today. Nothing for February.
6°F here this morning and stars. We had an afternoon squall yesterday that dropped some fluffy dry snow, maybe 1/2". ;D Had to put an extra stick or two of aspen in this morning. ;)
I have 14°,it's 9am too.
Should get up to 30 today.
We had a couple snow showers. Nothing on the ground that stayed.
Only 8° here at 10:30 am. :D :snowball: Forecast a high of around 22° up here. Sun hitting the steel roofing is causing melting. :D
We are normal here. 28° this morning and forecast for 77° Wednesday. ffcool
18°F this morning, low 20's expected for the high. Suppose to drop colder Tuesday then warmer for 3 days in the 30's and drop down again on the weekend. Will have to go to the woods and see if my barred owl is still around. ;D
20° here now, maybe 25 for a high.
Looks like I will be using some wood tonight, in the single numbers for the next two nights. But should be in the mid 20's for a high.
Yes it was cold day.
But it's nice to get home during daylight!!! And on the way to work too. The days are getting longer.
The Androscoggin River is frozen over. Looks like it will be for a while. Some warm temps are coming and maybe rain on Friday might make it soft.
6 above this morning. But the high 20's today.
6°F here as well. Only into high teens for us today.
Moon just set behind the spruce trees in the NW. But it was not quite over the house at 6:00 pm last night, so it is rising later as we get to full phase. The yard was lit like daylight. Snow plow going this morning early, they musta figured it was windy in the night. We only had a skiff the other night so can't imagine big drifts. Never drifted in the yard at all, wind swept it right on out and any snow that was on the gravel it took all that off. Plow had gone by last night after dark, never heard any wind all night. Playing cards at the shop would be cheaper than wearing out a plow and the road. :uhoh:
I have 8 above and should be 36 for a high today.
I just realized coming up the road there are no snow bankens. But saying that, there has not been much snow either.
Yes, there are some where the sun can't get at them at the end of the field.
6°F here this morning. Some places around down in the minuses, -7°F on the weather app. Stars, moon, no wind. High of around 30°F predicted. Looks like a Friday storm coming, mild in the 30's then dropping and snow by the looks of it. Looks like sap weather next week.
No snow or cold in ND right now. Old Bernstein was riding the grader on the dirt roads already. Been 40's and 50's. Seems odd that it has been cold just across the border in Manitoba. :D
We are forecast to see 80°'s Monday & Tuesday. ffcool
And there are still several fires out west burning all winter, they are burning under the snow in peat and duff. There are none in Quebec. It's funny how it rained here 3 or 4 days a week all summer and this winter hasn't been much for snow at all. :huh?
Quote from: Magicman on February 21, 2024, 07:52:34 AMWe are forecast to see 80°'s Monday & Tuesday. ffcool
Ugh! The mere thought of those temps coming this summer is a downer for me. Sorry for you Lynn
Heatwave this morning at 24°. ffcheesy
19°F here but going to upper 30's. I gotta open some windows again.
28°F this morning, had a dusting of snow, not doing much of anything now. Probably will be more falling at some point. Doesn't look like anything significant.
I have 32° and a little ice on the truck. Does not seem to be on the ground. But still not going to do 50mph on the way to work and end up in the ditch and wonder why. :wink_2:
I am surprised there is not a coating of snow. But we still have a chance of that around 10 this morning.
45F yesterday and sunny, out tapping the trees. 28F here this morning broken cloud cover. 0F tonight, a littler warmer than predicted.
Had 1" of snow this morning, gone now. :snowball:
Was all wet this morning at 5, nothing white at all. Car had some ice on it.
That all changed around 9,snow came in and lasted until 11. Ground was white, but did not last long.
Nothing much to it here, was maybe 1/2" at most and was melting all day. Road is bare. Driveway is white but you could run a scoop end to end without dumping it.
24°F this morning. Suppose to drop down near 0°. Looks like sap weather this week here.
Today.
Lots of sun, lots of wind, lots of cold.
I went to the hourly weather report,22° feels like 5°.
Feels like 5 too.
Has been snowing here about all day but melting as soon as it hits the ground. Supposed to warm up again tomorrow. Plenty of mud.
Went from 24°F this morning and dropped to 15°F, full sun, lots of north wind. Went for a 3 mile ride on the old snow shoe trail with the kick sled. Coyotes using that trail a lot and lots of piles of 'yote poo. Gotta dodge poo to slide. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy
5°F this morning, full moon, stars, no wind. ffsmiley In the single negative digits in areas nearby.
Just getting on to the FF.
Almost 8:30 in the morning and 12°.
High noon maybe 30.
The sap might even start this week, above freezing each day. That would be early for us.
Looks like full sun all day!!!
11° here around dawn. Yesterday was 19, the day before 35, now we are starting a warming trend for the week. Hoping for less wind today, yesterday it averaged 15 mph steady with some 20 mph gusts. I aborted cutting one tree because of the wind direction and it's lay (also my eyesight).
I'll get back out there today and give it another shot. At least it's sunny and clear, which I REALLY appreciate, it improves my mood greatly.
Been a warm winter here. I can say that because I have only worn 2 sweat shirts maybe a handful of times.
Yes, I can pick the days to go out, but it's been warm here.
I push my firewood wood kinda tree length into a pile. Then I saw the wood as needed. I do try to look ahead and get some sawed up to avoid the cold weather, but usually don't get no more than 4-5 days. Sometimes I have to go out at 20° and lower to saw wood. But this year it's been warm.
Not much snow for the month of Feb either. I don't think I used the snow blower at all this month. Did get a couple storms with maybe 2 inches, but I left it, because it was going to warm up and melt.
But winter is not over either. :wink_2:
We should not have the cold weather for a week steady now. Cold as in the singles numbers.
20° and should more than double that temp today.
Partly cloudy today.
Not much snow on the ground, maybe a foot.
Yeah, only been below 10F around 1/4 of the month. But has not been any record warm. By comparison is Feb 1981, this year has had no bunch of 50's up here. Not even one this month. This Wednesday might be the closest to it, almost March.
22°F here this morning.
Pretty moon last night with light cloud cover. Yesterday the wind dropped off and maxed out around 12mph with full sun all day was pretty nice. Temps overnight were stuck between 20 and 33 through the night. 32 right now, full overcast and headed just over 50 today. Hopefully skies will clear in the afternoon. Looking like rain on Wednesday, then again for Saturday through next Wednesday we will have drizzles.
Tomorrow @3PM we are forecasted for 62 degrees, by 8 the same evening 32 and snow. By morning single digits with a wind chill of -10. :snowball:
40F here and clearing. Tomorrow afternoon into Wednesday will be rain and 50's on Wednesday. Then temps drop Thursday, a little flurry then sun.
I am in Denver Colorado, and it will be cold tomorrow. home to Ks on Wednesday, and it will be cold there then. enjoyed 70o+ yesterday.
24°F this morning. Suppose to rain later with wind.
I have 24°.
The Androscoggin River where I cross the bridge to get the Crash Road I can see some water. Might be all open by Wed when we get the rain. Sure won't be no ice jams this year. Same as last year.
If we had the same storm the next day, it would be snow.
We hit 69 today. First February ever that I was out working in the yard in a t shirt. Sure beats the 2 feet of snow we usually have the end of Feb. Hopefully the ground hog was right ffcool.
I saw 50° today in the car for a few miles, then back to a steady 48.
Got cold again today lows back down in the single digits and snow.
Quote from: 21incher on February 27, 2024, 06:01:10 PMWe hit 69 today. First February ever that I was out working in the yard in a t shirt. Sure beats the 2 feet of snow we usually have the end of Feb. Hopefully the ground hog was right ffcool.
We hit 71 today, but expect it to be only 17° in the morning, after some snow/rain. Nebraska sending it our way. lol
It hit 62° here today, but after lunch the clouds moved in and made it feel less warm. Still worked with rolled up sleeves all day. I got home and only just then did I wonder where my jacket was because I was 'chilling down' quick. I had thrown it in the back of the truck.
From now until after sundown tomorrow the temp is forecast to stay between 48 and 58°, but also some very high wind gusts as a cold front moves in. Supposed to be much worse a bit north of us. We may have some emergency tree jobs to do. :wink_2:
64 degrees at 3 this afternoon and right now at not even 11Pm it's snowin' and blowin' like crazy. smiley_thumbsdown :snowball:
Very light rain and fog here. There is a little wind now that wasn't earlier this morning. 38° currently. Got to about 50°F on the porch in the afternoon. We had sun most of the day, felt nice. Even the house flies came out in the sun. :)
We have definitely had winter this year. Still got a foot of snow on the ground, but the days are getting longer and the temps are more and more above freezing. We may even make it above 45F this week.
40° and a heavy mist and the wind is blowing a little.
More rain coming, but not a lot, a hard wind and the temp will drop.
I saw a chipmunk out the other day, Winter is over. ffcheesy
Temp is going to drop like a rock by tomorrow morning here, so I wouldn't plant the tulips yet. ffcheesy
53 this morning, temps drop today and lake snow tomorrow morning :veryangry:
Dreary, Fog and rain eating the snow up fast.
Less than a foot left where the sun shines.
Terrible winter for snowmobiling. Can-Am dog sled races canceled in N. Maine this year from lack of snow. Did I mention road conditions ? Ugh ! Posted signs going up, hang on tight to the wheel . At least spring is in sight.
I catch the weather on two TV stations.
On CBS, the meteorologist is new here from the Midwest. He is always very optimistic. Two days ago, the forecasted snow accumulation for Thursday through Sunday was 8-12 feet at the summit, 6-8 at my cabin. Last night 6-10 and 4-6. It will likely go lower tonight.
On NBC, the meteorologist has been here for 30 years or more. His forecast was 8-10 at the summit and lowered a little last night to 6-8.
We'll see. The snow pack is a little less than normal and way less that last year right now. A typical "Miracle March" brewing. CBS is predicting rain for the valley the whole time, NBC says light, intermittent shower with the possibility of thunderstorms.
Long range says a repeat next weekend.
Ljohnsaw
Both are likely full of CBS and NBC hype. So roll your pantlegs up, ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy
Flood warnings here this morning. Had to cut a tree out of my driveway so we could get out. Glad I had my chainsaw sharpened and ready to go although not my favorite thing to do first thing in the morning. Was wanting a biscuit from the local biscuit shop pretty bad so I persevered. Don't have to worry about high water where I live but I'd say the people living down by the main creek were sweating bullets for awhile as it was running pretty high.
Soon be stack'n wood.

Temperature dropped 25 degrees in the last hour. High winds, sitting here with no power. First time using the forum on my dinky little phone. Looks really nice and easy to navigate now. ffcool
Was a steady 45° here all day. Seem like it was 45 at 8 this morning and stayed there all day.
Foggy all day too and I do mean fog!!!
Ice out on the Androscoggin River. :wacky:
Still 45° at 9pm. zzzz_smiley
Tomorrow will be a wake up call.
Wind is going to blow. May not be able to give a report in the morning with no power.
That's gonna change Ray. Between 8 and 8:30 tonight the temp dropped 15 degrees, the wind went from 8 mph average to 35 mph and 40 gusts, and we got 1/2 per hour rain. I am just taking a wild guess and thinking the front came through right about then. ffcheesy
High for tomorrow is supposed to be 35 and I'm fine with that.
Got to 45° yesterday and windy. Last night at 2:00 am it was 40° and done raining. By 5:00 am it is snowing and 30° , 24° now and still falling. Suppose to hit the teens by 9:00 am. Snow will be done by daybreak.
Looks like about 16° here on this leap year day and the wind is blowing.
Woke me up once in the night!!! But the wind is not like that now.
Looks to be another so called storm free week. Showers, yes, but no all day events of weather. :wacky:
19* here this morning, The wind blew hard during the night but not blowing hard now, we didn't get any snow either. The grandkids will be mad not to be able to go sledding, you would think that 20 something's would be over that.
23 a little lake snow and power still out. Looks like the whole area is out.
9°F here now and still falling. Still some wind, but not like it was earlier. Sun is out at least. We never got much snow, just enough for a dusting. Sure lost a lot of snow, yard is about bare except for the skiff on top.
It was very windy here in eastern NC yesterday. And very mild. over 70°. Today it's supposed to be the coldest day of the week at 55°. Not much wind today.

The beast finally went out, the man ain't ready ffcheesy 64 yesterday, 28 at the moment and breezy with deck footings to hand dig. I believe I'll wait a bit yet!
Need to train the beast to do it for ya Don! ffcool  ffsmiley
I broke down and lit another flicker this morning. Low 40°'s but that should be the last one for at least another week.
53* here now but feels cooler due to westerly wind.Tomorrow 40 - 47 with 80% chance of more rain. Forecast high of 70* by Monday. Buds are all out on trees so we're probably going to get at least another hard frost or two. Hopefully doesn't affect the peach farmers.
Going to be cool here tomorrow again, but going up into the 40's and 50's for the weekend and into mid week next. Looks like well above freezing beyond that. But up at the woods today, not much for snow under the trees, wouldn't be 6" anywhere and less than that in some places. Spring is 3 weeks early.
Yes, a cold windy day. Did not get above 24° today.
Cold in the morning too.
Yesterday I had to change my pants in the morning to 'unlined' and it got warm while working. We had some wind up at height, but not too bad. Working up in the bucket at 70' Bill could really feel it and had to fight it a bit to get the drops where we wanted them. Hit something in the high 50's, and my shirts were pretty damp. Today I had to switch back to lined pants, high was only 32. We got some serious wind here last night and one of the pines on my neighbors property snapped clean off at the 40' level and made a mess in my swamp. Only had time for a quick glance, but it whacked 3 other trees, one of which was one of our few white oaks I had been clearing around and trying to release. It broke off the top of the main leader, so it will never be a viable tree now and I'll take it for mushroom logs, maybe 6 logs max. I'd rather have the tree. The other trees will be firewood and all can wait. Anyway today we got some pretty good wind here and there hitting 40MPH at some points and making that 32° seem a lot colder. So getting a full day in was good for me, but my right foot was really not happy. Gotta get the work done though, right?
Funny, but the replies I am reading here in the last two weeks sound like the replies of 2 years ago, but those were in April, not February. I wonder if were are just in a warm cycle, like an El NONO or something, or this is a bigger sign? Are we in for a couple of wicked winters coming up in the next few years, or is this a bigger trend?
Experts have said El Nino effect. Then they have to push the other agenda along with it. But it's 4°F this morning and still a little breezy, but clear skies with moon and stars. But this is the last of the coldest for here. Looks like spring from here on out.
Was surprised at how little snow February brought this year. Never stopped raining all summer then all it did most of the winter was cloud up with no snow. Most of our snow came in January. I bet there wasn't 3" in February. No prolonged warmth compared to 1981 when we had lots of 50's and low 60's. This year we actually had creeks freeze over up here, not thick ice, but have not seen creeks freeze here very often in the last 15 years. Everything was solid in 2008 though, one of the worst winters on record for snow and cold for us.
There are lots of scientists pointing to the activities of the sun influencing winters and have shown how activities coincide with cold or mild winters. The climate models are too simplistic and have failed to predict anything. New York would be under water by now according to Al Gore. These personalities know where and when to invest since they push policies where they determine things. It's easy money, just have to have the gift of gab along with people who can't think for themselves or look into it.
I remember back in the 80's one notion all through the news was 'the lining up of the planets' was influencing the weather and causing tsunamis, earthquakes, and other global disasters. All debunked. What comes next? :D
Is this our last cold morning of the season at 8°??
Should get up to 35 today.
Not much for wind out there now!!!
We did not lose power but some 10 minutes from me did.
Was a strange Feb. A few days ago it was 61 degrees when I went out in the morning and it was in the low twenties when i did last check on the stock about 8:30pm that night.
Single digits a couple days ago maybe hit seventy tomorrow. I'd like low 40's for a high and 25 to 30 for lows for a couple weeks and ease into spring, alas beggars can't be choosers.
Local chip factory burned down last night and there is an air quality alert for this area. The place is 20 miles away, but if the wind is just right we could get a whiff of it.
24°F here this morning, going to be 40's today. Looks like mild weather for days ahead. Might be some showers tonight.
Been raining here all night, and it should stop sometime this morning.
Jim Rogers
We will be dealing with rainy warmer weather for the next 10 days which is, of course, what the Gulf of Mexico does for us. ffsmiley
overcast and temps climbing. will be sunny and 72o this afternoon. this was supposed to happen Thursday, so we will see.
Snow is melting here now, above freezing. We havn't got much left to melt anyway.
I80 is closed over the summit since last night. White out conditions. Half the traffic cameras temporarily not working, the others are shaking in the wind and looks like it's super foggy. But that's blowing snow. Last night wind gusts at the ridge of 167mph :snowball:
We went to Newport ME today. I don't have much snow in the fields around here, but most are covered with snow.
No snow on the fields in Newport, which I was kinda surprised.
I did not see a temp above 45 today.
48F here today for the high. We had lots of sun. But now it is overcast and suppose to see some rain tonight. The fields here mostly bare except on the edges where the wind drifted. But even that isn't very deep. Won't see much snow here in a weeks time. Hardly anything in the woods. Under softwoods it's almost bare and other areas maybe 6".
I80 remains (from about this time last night) closed from Colfax to the Nevada State line. Probably will remain closed overnight. Colfax is about 35 miles from my house and 28 miles to my cabin.
Raining now. The way it's coming down if it was snow, I think it would be an inch an hour!!!!
But only calling for a half inch of rain. Maybe it's all in one hour. :wacky:
Light showers and heavy fog. 38°F
Had a little rain when I got up, but seems to be all done except for a call for showers.
40° and maybe some sun later.
Frost coming out of my driveway, 3" mud. All the road bands are up in NH.
Happy I filled the mill yard with logs this winter, for what it was. ffcheesy
Roads have been post here since the first week of Feb. We had a warm spell for about a week or two and all the towns posted the roads. Seems to be the norm now. Post the roads early. I can understand why, they have to protect the roads. Get above freezing for a week and things start to thaw out.
I am almost in mud down where I saw my firewood. Coming and going I have a nice road.
Hard to bring in gravel and then drag wood through it. think_not
A few inches of sawdust keep the ground cold. But the mud will be there quick.
I80 remains closed for the third night in a row. Yesterday was spent removing several hundred stranded motorists and over a hundred semi trucks. Over 7' deposited since Friday with another foot expected before this pattern ends tomorrow night.
We're getting the snow pack up to where it should be.
Quote from: Ljohnsaw on March 03, 2024, 09:26:11 PMWe're getting the snow pack up to where it should be.
But did you need to do it all in 3 days?! ffcheesy Jeepers that is scary stuff.
Quote from: Ljohnsaw on March 03, 2024, 09:26:11 PMOver 7' deposited since Friday with another foot expected before this pattern ends tomorrow night.
There should be a law about getting that much snow in one storm.
32° here now. Showers and some rain coming. Today looks dry.
34°F this morning, moon and stars. Beautiful warm day (for March) coming this way. Snow has been making water here for 3 days. The yard and lawn and gardens are 99% bare. What's left for snow is about a 2" veneer of white which will be gone today or tomorrow. Going to be warm for several days ahead, but not wild crazy temperatures, just 30's and 40's. I don't even see any 50's forecast. This mild spell will entice the aspen flowers though.
Peppy the skunk was around, I think he's staying in an old barn across the road. I smell skunk walking by there in the mornings. Not much of a door on it, a dog could walk through it. :D
Any pussy willows out up your way?
I saw some out here on Saturday. Should be more out by the end of the week.
@thecfarm I've been watching up by the brook where they are out as early as any place, but I have not seen any bust open yet. But this warm stretch will entice them.
Got'er a little warm in here, not a cold day. Windows are up. :sunny:
36 here, the bears will be coming out soon. :sunny:
Almost 60 degrees this morning. Not our normal at all for March 4. Gonna be warm and wet spring.
Not much for snow around here. :sunny: 46°F today.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11009/weather-March4-2024.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=352795)
I still have snow in my fields. Not much, but there is white there.
Was a steady 52° on the back roads of Chesterville. Not much sun today.
30°F here this morning, stars out. Showers and rain into Thursday now beginning early evening.
I believe my cousin is getting ready for sap production, but the neighbor who taps hasn't put up his pails yet. I would be.
45 at midnight, 43 now (4:30am), not supposed to break 45 today and some rain coming in, but it's really slow in coming. It maxed out at 55 yesterday but it was damp and overcast all day and never 'felt' warm. Drizzly rain for the next few days.
I have almost 40 to start the day off.
Yes, we have rain, coming too. Showers too.
Probably some snow at the end of the week.
The snow has finally ended. Four day totals range from 7 to 11 feet. The first and last days were light snowfall of 1 to 2 inches per hour for half the day.
There were series of thunderstorms going up or parallel with I80. That gave localized heavy snow (2-4"/hour) when they got up in elevation. Winds in excess of 100mph.
I80 opened yesterday afternoon for cars, no semi's. Spinouts caused big delays.
A few days of sun down here and scattered snow showers up the hill. The Sierras went from ~50% last month to over 100% of normal this past weekend.
I hope your timber frame project up in the mountains has survived the monster snowfall John.
Fingers crossed!
John
Lotta snow.
Do they still have the Chain-up rules in effect?
Ljohnsaw, now that is some snow.
Many year around homes that got buried too?
Chains required but still stupid people. If you have 4x4 and snow tires, usually no chains required. But ice is still gonna take you out!
Cabin project should be ok. Had more snow last year.
There are some year-round homes. On the News, a ski resort video opening a door and it's all a wall of snow. ffcheesy
Raining a good clip here now and 38°F. Up until now it was just light showers. It doesn't look like it will be steady rain all day and night though. Comes and goes. We don't need it that bad. Even with no snow around the drive way, I saw yesterday, water seeping out of the gravel in front of the garage. Must be some frost because .the driveway was bare all February pretty much and we had some cold mornings.
It's coming !!!
Dropped the plow off the tractor today. ffcool
Wonder when I will put it back on? :huh? ffcheesy ffcheesy
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10180/Plow_off_March_6.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=352837)
April 1st. ffcheesy
Took mine off today too. smiley_smug01 Any more snow we get, da ground is way too soft ta attempt plowing. Unless of course it turns really cold, and that's entirely possible. ffcheesy
Never even put one on all winter. ffcool Mostly 1-2" storms, I just pushed it out of the way with a snow scoop. Deepest storm of 4" I took off with a walk behind blower.
That being said, I've seen 8-12" storms in mid May twice in the last 6 years. :D
One for context. May 10th, 2020. ffcheesy ffcheesy
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11009/snow-may10-2020.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=283720)
Last year the dust was flying and that field was being planted in mid May. :)
49 years ago it snowed UP here on May 18'th. Da reason I remember dat day is 'cause it was da wife and I's wedding day. ffsmiley
Sun was out first thing in the morning, then it got somewhat cloudy. 54° was ahigh that I saw in the car. Then the dark clouds came in during early afternoon and the rain started around 6:30 tonight.
40° and rain. Another no sun day.
OWB don't take much wood at temps above 40°.
Still have snow in the field.
I don't mean at the edge of the field either. That will be there for a while still. This rain will make that snow soft. It rained all night.
Rain most of the night here, sometimes hard. 32°F here now and has been a rain/snow mix since 2:00 am, going to be most of the day until late afternoon. White out there, but less than 1" on the ground now. Looks like 40's for a couple days and then another round of wet snow for the next 3 days afterward. ffcheesy No 50's here in sight, but 30's and 40's for highs. And high 20's overnight on non storm days. :snowball:
Yeah same here steady rain all night. Lots of ponding
going on in the low spots. wet,wet,wet..
Sun returns tomorrow.
There was snow in my fields. When I left for work, daylight, there was no snow in the fields. Was not much the other day, but it's gone now in the open.
We have much stormy weather forecast for tomorrow which should also drop our temperature about 15° by the weekend. It looks like it will be chilly enough for me to light a flicker Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday mornings.
Next week looks sawmilling clear. :wink_2:
24°F and clear. We have close to 2" of wet snow from yesterday. That'll discourage any bugs from emerging for awhile longer. ffcheesy Suppose to hit the mid 40's today. Sap weather.
30° and full sun today!!!
Should be a good sap day, if the wind don't blow.
Skift of snow last night more like sleet tinted the ground white. Supposed to be back to the 50s by Sunday. Weird weather, it had gotten so nice farmers were getting itchy.
Orange sky last night and this morning. Sunny with a bit of haze. Good sap run yesterday, and should be okay today. We have a rainfall warning out for tonight and tomorrow...
Blue skies and 50* today. Snow is all but gone.
Nice to be walking on terra firma again.
Got to 42°F here, all day to get there to. Was doing some melting, but still white. Walked this morning in the fresh snow, wasn't enough to cover the toe of my boots. Be gone anyway by Monday, going to rain Sun-Monday.
24°F and clear again this morning. :sunny: One thing about March and April, when it is a sunny day it sure is nice to be out in it. Not hot and no bugs. ffcheesy ffsmiley I walked about 7 miles yesterday morning, from here to the woodlot, out on trails and back home just work boots on for footwear. Snow never covered the toe of my boots. Saw some turkeys on the way.
Suppose to get a dump of white wet stuff tonight and Sun.
Wind to boot. The last hurrah? probably not. 8" plus predicted.
Better check the genny.
Maybe a "normal" spring here.
Seem like past years, spring and fall, there is not much of a gradual warm up or down. Seem like it's 20 one week and then the next week is 70, or the other way in the fall.
I have 26° now and should be in to 40 today. Looks like some good sapping weather coming up too. Cold at night, warm in the day.
No big temperature swing as swampdonkey noted in another thread. He reminded me of that.
Yep, snow is coming.
Nice here, the mud is drying up. The road to the mill is good now. Have a customer coming today for a trailer load of lumber. Stuff I have in stock. Milling will start sometime in April. ffsmiley
As a guy that spent his sawmill years relying on a full crew to be there everyday to get the loads out on time that I was tasked with, I hated sick time. If a guy knows he has it, he'll use it, and most of the time at the worst time. You can plan on vacations, but sick days were a pita
I was a proponant of well-time. If you went an entire month without missing a day, you got an extra days pay. At 1 month, it was short enough that guys didn't give up on the idea right off like they would quarterly. Lost production from just one or two days a month more than made up for it. And far far cheaper than having to employ an extra body just in case. Our loads were sold before they were cut, and cut on deadline or you would incur a loss. Ya gotta be sick somewhere. You might as well get paid for it. Its not like we were infecting the public. With a 5 man crew, if someone had something infectious odds are, you already had it or were going to get it.
28o this am and after working all night, and hitting the remote start, truck had some glitch and would not even try to start. two batteries (interstate) and no cables as they adapt to my winch I loaned to a buddy and then he came in with a hemorrhagic stroke last week. doing better, but no cable for my truck. have to go this afternoon and retrieve the ol girl.
doc, I can tell that the temperature is dropping because your ° fell to the bottom of your 28. ffcheesy
Well the weird/lousy weather continues. I feel like it's never gonna dry out and soon we will see kids being born with webbed feet.
Warm then cool, warm, then cool and all through it's been mild. My log clients are looking at me sideways because I waited SO long to start cutting and now I am behind the 8 ball. I was going top collect logs today, but more rain coming, so we shall see. I do have a shop task to get done, 6 months waiting, so I guess I will get after that first to shut the customer up. ffcheesy I hate whining.
I just can't wait until I have a reason to complain about how dry everything is and when are we gonna get some rain? I still occasionally here people say, "Well, we really did need that rain" and after I suppress the urge to lay them out, I look at them and ask "Have you left the confines of your house in the last 15 months?!"
Sorry about your truck Doc, hope it turns out being something simple.
tried to fix it three times. electric must not be my thing this am. zzzz_smiley smiley_thumbsdown :snowball: ffsmiley
Oh yea, wet and I do mean wet. Good thing we did not get 2-3 feet of snow. The ground is full, where would the run off go?
The brook by my house has been bank full all winter. Couple times it overflowed into the meadow.
Cloudy just about all day. Saw the sun just a little this morning. If it was raining, it would be like it was quite often all last summer.
No ice in the river again this year.
We only saw 35°F here today. Snow melts extremely slow at those temps. ffcheesy
We have a snowfall warning of 10-12". Not what the local radio stations say. I believe that will be in the far northeast, not here. Time will tell.
Just came in form the nightly feeder of the OWB and the deer. A very light snow is falling at 32°.
30°F this morning, still dry out there. Unless it gets warmer than that it will definitely be snow. How much? I'll let you know Monday. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy ffwave
We are supposed to get 1 inch of wintery mix today. Had a lot of rain again yesterday. Luckily all the recent rain hasn't been snow like in a normal year. Fire burning this morning. splitwood_smiley
lots of rain and wind yesterday, had to pull branches off the sap lines. dropped to just below freezing over night here with a very light snow coming down. Almost like a fog. Supposed to stay below freezing until Monday and then go to +40 tomorrow. should get a sap run !
Still 30°F and rain started coming down with ice pellets mixed in.
I finally dared to go outside to feed the OWB. ffcheesy
It's 36° now and raining. Only an inch of snow out there now. Suppose to stop by 11 this morning.
32°F here now and so far it hasn't amounted to hill of beans. Old saying. ffwave
Predicted snow was a bust. Tough call for em, last tally was for 3-14" on
one weather site ffcheesy .
Turned to rain ,sleet and back to rain after a couple inches of snow.
I'm ok with it, was starting to like not having to trudge around on snow and ice after
3-4 mos. of that. Full blown mud season on tap now.
Not a pleasant day at all here. Vey damp, overcast and the wind stuck around 15-20mph. I am still trying to warm up from a roadside repair job 2 hours ago, helping my son swap out a fuel tank selector valve on his truck that quit at the wrong time. The wind whipped to 30MPH and snow was a whipping down for a bit. Colder than a Witche's .... Colder than a well digger. Not pleasant, but on the other hand, tomorrow is supposed to bring nearly 50mph winds. Yippee. We have 2" even of rain in the past 24 hours. Not a lot of fun being or working outside right now. Even less fun cutting trees against the wind. So I won't. ffcheesy
We have extremely high winds now with lake flakes. High wind warning all night tonight. What a difference a day makes.
34°F here this morning, been rain/snow mix with no accumulation at all. Suppose to be the same for today, might climb another 2-3° all day. smiley_thumbsdown
Had some wind gusts yesterday, but all in all was pretty uneventful and way over exaggerated by the gloom and doomer crowd on CBC news. It's actually dead calm here this morning, not even a tree branch moving.
30° and the wind is blowing a little.
Not much sun today.
Got Wind? WE DO! ffcheesy It really picked up in the wee morning hours and woke me up. temps at 30 and up. We got winds up to 50mph today and it was unsafe to be in the woods with all the hardwoods we have with dead tops. Dang uncomfortable with the wind chills. Usually I hear the occasional branch coming down in wind like this. Today I was listening to tops break out and quite literally tons of wood slamming to the ground. It sure could put the starch into a man's spine. Lots of folks wiothout power and there was a brush fire up on one of the mountains that took two departments and a bunch of time and equipment. Downed power line that set the woods on fire and did I mention we had wind to drive it?
Today reminded me of that old joke: I saw a chicken with her back to the wind and she laid the same egg 3 times. Then she turned around and laid 3 eggs at once. ffcheesy
The wind picked up a lot and I mean a lot since I posted this morning.
The wind they claimed is 40mph gusts, but not many branches in the roads that I traveled on.
30°F this morning and breezy, with gusts 18 mph. Snow squalls all night, just a skiff on the ground. Those CBC nuts keeps saying several cm of snow will be falling. Where? No local radio is saying that.
Much quieter outside this morning at 30°.
Wind is still blowing, but nothing like yesterday, feels 20° warmer too!!!!
The snow we got Sunday is gone.
I went about 20 minutes each direction yesterday. One way still had some snow. Around here the paved driveways were bare. Not up in Farmington, kinda North from me. They still had a few inches of snow there.
Then I went into Readfield and could not find any snow there.
This is no big deal, normal. I've seen it many times. Seems like Kents Hill, things change there.
Another big blow last 24hrs. Top of the rock MT Washington had a gust of 150 mph
yesterday. Down to a steady 90 now.
Spring is back with some 40* temps on tap, sap should run .
We have much rain forecast for this weekend, 4+ inches in some areas. :shocked2:
If we don't see rain pretty soon planting won't go well and fire season will be starting early. This has been one of the mildest and driest winters I have seen.
Windy with squalls that still have not added up to anything measurable, a patch of blue once in awhile. No record for temps here, only 34°F right now. Not a sap day. I haven't seen a boil yet. No sign of any summer song birds here yet.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/11009/weather-March-12-2024.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=352917)
Rain here Thursday and 40's and back to rain/snow squalls Sunday-Monday and 30's.
Oh yea on the wind.
I thought it was suppose to slow down. As guess it did, gusts of only 40mph instead of 50. ffcheesy
I do need some wood, but will cut enough for a day, then tomorrow I will cut more.
The wind hasn't stopped here for the last 5 days, haven't been able to cut down much trees. Plus we have a lot of water on the ground
That wind dried things out.
@woodroe, look up!!! About 50 geese heading your way. ffcheesy
The wind has just about stopped. :shocked3: That stopped quick.
Better days are coming folks, the winds are greatly diminished here today, in fact it was a perfect day, even hit 60°. ffcool
I knew it when I stepped out the door, like a fresh new spring day, including that smell. We still have some winds, but nothing much over 20mph. I even dropped some trees in the afternoon.
Quote from: Magicman on March 12, 2024, 01:06:33 PMWe have much rain forecast for this weekend, 4+ inches in some areas. :shocked2:
Hopefully some of it will Peter out before it arrives in SC, we've had a gracious plenty this winter/early spring!
The smell gets me too!!!!!
The clocks are ahead now.
I really don't like the daylight-saving thing. But do look forward to the spring ahead part. Seem like the days really start to get longer now. Before I know it, it will be light at 6am again.
But I hate the fall back part worse.
Been ducks here that never left, see them in the Presque Isle Stream all winter. Not seen any geese yet, might be some on the main river though, ice is long gone where there is current. But just. They said the ice flow went the other day down by Hartland, they was more worried about water, but we never had any heavy rains and there isn't much woods snow to make water. I know the creek up the road has never flooded out of the banks, and with a regular snow year it usually will. Not this year, so far. Not much woods snow at all.
No sign of a robin, if they aren't back nothing else will be yet. They don't migrate very far from here. I predict this cool wet drizzle snow into mid May. Then dry during planting and back to cold wet June. Now there's a downer for ya. But that has been the trend, so good odds. No gardening (except the onions and berry bushes) until the 15th of June. That's fine because my peppers and tomatoes will be 2 months ahead by then anyway. :D :D
33°F this morning, suppose to see some sun and get to the mid 40's. :sunny:
A beautiful day yesterday, low 40, then a beautiful morning now with a tinge of orange to the sky, sap ran like a river yesterday and overnight. It was the big run that you get every season,
Going up to over 50 today.... sap season is coming to a close
Quote from: thecfarm on March 12, 2024, 06:45:06 PMThat wind dried things out.
@woodroe, look up!!! About 50 geese heading your way. ffcheesy
The wind has just about stopped. :shocked3: That stopped quick.
Hah! I thought I heard Geese yesterday about that time but couldn't see
anything from inside. Just a couple honks.
Never made it into the woods yesterday wind never quit till late.
But what a difference a day can make, light breeze and 50 today so definitely
heading out with the saw .
More blow downs from the last big blow, hard to keep up .
Yesterday was a 52° day, sun all day.
It's 32° this morning and looks to be up in the 50's again.
I cut some wood last night and the wood yard was just about dried out. We had hard wind for 48 hours, so that helped out the mud.
I have a dirt driveway and that has all dried out too.
I can still see some snow in the woods.
I might be able to start to clean up a little around here. I know where to keep away from due to wet spots.
30°F this morning. Got to 45°F yesterday here. Started stacking some of next winter's wood. Moved a rank into the basement of dry stuff that was in my way. I can fit nearly 4 cord in the empty spot I've started stacking. Rain coming this afternoon. A little bit of sun this morning as I do see stars out.
@woodroe, look up. ffcheesy
Right on time , 11 Geese just flew by ffcheesy
Beautiful spring day yesterday, warm 50* and sunny.
It hit 69.7° here yesterday! T-shirt weather for sure. Blue skies, low wind. Today should be similar, so I have a good working day ahead, but my body is a bot worn, let's see what I can make of it. Rain coming in the evening and all through the night, so that will fend off any chance of getting any dry ground soon. :veryangry: I shut the house stove off a few days ago and just burning small junk i the shop. I am having problems with finishes curing up even though I am keeping the temps easily over 65° all day and night, most times 70 or better. I may just let it go out today and restart tonight, then I have a full shop day tomorrow, I think. We'll see.
Just returned from my 7 mile walk. Saw a cow moose with a yearling, Tom turkey gobbling under the hill here out of site, small flock of geese with 4 headed north of my woodlot, 4 coyotes yipping in the field and mother saw the first 2 robins this morning on her walk. So spring is officially here now.
The high today was 69.6°, so 0.1° cooler than yesterday. I guess this is a cooling trend? It was TOO HOT for me, sweated my butt off, but I made good progress.
Tomorrow is supposed to be 10° lower for the high, and we are getting some good rain forecast for about the time SD gets out of bed (the wee hours). I hope it's enough rain for a shop day, I need some rest. ffsmiley
Got to 44°F yesterday, had some evening sprinkles, so the rain was a fizzle. Cloudy for next 2 days and 40's, then 3 days of dreary snow/rain mix like last week. :snowball: smiley_thumbsdown Dark as a cave out there right now, no stars. 30°F now.
I have not even seen 60 here yet Tom!!!
Only got up to 52 here yesterday. Rained in the night, and still raining now. Should stop around noon.
River has gone down a lot in the last week. No snow for a run off.
As I mentioned the ground was really starting to dry out.
I have a dirt driveway and the frost is long gone in that. No more mud. Seem like I get about 2 inches of mud, then when the water can drain out of the driveway, it dries out quick.
55 on the porch yesterday afternoon. 2 nice spring days in a row :sunny: Raining now.
Another 50+ geese passed over around noon. Big V.
Came within 3' of stepping on a woodcock edge of field , burst into the air. Heart attack moment.
Sun came out yesterday afternoon and got up to 48°F by 4:00 pm. Got 7 new 6' cedar fence posts from the woodlot. Peeled and sharpened, ready for the grape garden. Drove out there to the cedar woods on the SxS. About 2-3 inches of snow in the trails. Was no trouble at all. A little slippery walking on ice and snow from the buggy into where I cut the posts, but was only 200 feet or so. Used that little battery saw and my axe was used to limb. Only took 3 trees for the posts, cut to length on site. Love the smell of fresh white cedar.
Today, Saturday looks to be a dry day. But another Sunday of rain, like last Sunday. Then next week looks like rain on Sunday again. But that is a week away.
Sun until about 10 today, then the clouds move in. 32° here now, high of 50.
Back in 2000 I was searching for snow to hold up sticks so I could figure out where I wanted the house built. I check the high and low each day and it was 62 back in 2000. I saw another high too of that year the other day. But this year I would really have to travel to find snow. I would have to put it in a 5-gallon bucket and bring it to the work site. ffcheesy There is no snow around the house at all.
Now I have a little snow at the edge of the woods, but that is all I can see from the house.
Today is gonna be a warm one at 10 c! Sunny all day and we will also get that rain tomorrow! Can't call it dry exactly lots of water! Few bridges and roads out of commission
37°F here now, clouds taking over. Going to be snow/rain mix Sunday into Tuesday up here. Yard is dry, but dirt roads, fields and woods ain't dry by a long shot. Won't be until at least end of May. :D
Snow/rain mix for 3 days is under way. 32°F here this morning. :snowball:
More rain, got a smudge going to ward off the damp.
Ice going out 8 mi. south of here, saw a boat out on one lake by the big chimney in MT Vernon.
5 Ducks flew by this morning so that's a good sign of ice going away. Early for sure.
Usually April before any ice goes out.
Minniehonk, that pond right in town of Mt Vernon is well on its way of going out.
That's my run twice a day.
Ice in Mosher and Norcross is still there. Moosehill too.
ICE?! We don't got no stinking ICE! The reservoir never even thought about freezing this year. I never saw anything more than skim ice on any real water. Yeah, some deep puddles might have froze, but not for long. I recall not too long ago (10 years?) when the reservoir didn't see 'ice out' until the middle of April, 2 weeks into trout season, before that we always had ice out by opening day (4/1).
We are definitely in 'shoulder season' now. I let the house stove go out about 4 days ago, this is the second shutdown in a month. The shop stove continues on because it is the only heat and I have been feeding it junk and scraps and the occasional piece of good wood. One afternoon I let it go out and the next morning it was still 62° in there. Last night I filled it with junks and 3 good pieces of wood on top. It was 68° at 7am.
About 10 days ago I spotted a pair of Wood ducks in Bill's swamp pond, first I have ever seen. I think they moved on, but Bill says they are still around. This last week a pair of Black ducks showed up and I see them almost daily but they are quite shy. Yesterday I saw the Blue Heron is back for the summer. In interesting bird and their is a wildlife photographer who shows up almost yearly to photograph him/her early in the mornings.
It was 43° and drizzly at dawn, now the sun is out. We might get some more rain in the afternoon, but the rain predicted for this morning is pretty much all gone now. I know it rained, but none of the local stations recorded and rainfall yet. Gonna do some more firewood today and other 'stuff'.
Head ponds here are solid ice still, but none in faster water. No creek or small river has any ice here, just stuff pushed up on shore. Saw 30 mallards yesterday in a small beaver pond. Mostly drakes that I saw. Raining here with fog, but on the edge of wet snow to. 34°F
Rain here until about 1 today. Then maybe some sun.
I have Mosher Pond going out April 10 or the 11 in 2022.
Then April 15 in 2023.
I drive by Mosher 4 times a day. I saw it go out last year.
Looks like no sun until 6. Seem like one summer that happened a lot. Sun would come out and then go down. :wacky:
Wood ducks are always nice to see
You can forget about the sun, for 3 or 4 days around here. ffcheesy 34°F here now. No heat wave either. :snowball:
Sun is out now!!!
Looks to be a cool week ahead.
Only 2 days above 40 and below freezing each night.
Much better then 70's for a couple weeks then it cools off and we get a killing frost and sets everything back. That's how it has been the last couple years.
Had a little reprieve from the snow/rain in the night, but going right back to it by mid morning. 32°F here this morning. I did catch a glimpse of the moon between clouds, setting to the NW behind the spruces. Had a big blizzard of wet snow from 3:00 pm until almost dark. Nothing stuck. Dark is about 8:30 pm now up here.
Probably be swinging the clearing saw by April 1st this year. Going out to the saw shop today and see if they have any new saws. Test it out on some bushes along my property edge.
Light wet snow has begun here.
Carpenter will be putting up the shop next week. ffcool
Shop? ffsmiley
30°F and light snow falling. :snowball: No 50's F in sight for another week. Going below freezing on the weekend, upper 20's for highs.
The river is kinda low for this time of year. There was not much ice floating down the river this year either.
Yea, looks to be a cool week.
Better then the 70's temps each day and everything starts to bud out and we get a bad frost.
Quote from: thecfarm on March 19, 2024, 05:56:28 AM.

Don't talk like that. Frosty might hear you. ffcheesy
34° here this morning and a flicker in the insert feels good. fire_smiley
We are back into a cooler cycle, 30° this morning, high yesterday was about 42 and the guessers have been pretty dang close on the highs and low so far this week. BUT they have blown the wind forecast. Yesterday wind was supposed to bein the 5-10mph range, but came in at 20 mph with gusts up to 25. Today they are saying 10MPH or less, but we have been into 15-20mph all morning. That changes my day in the woods and I have to walk past some trees because of the wind, plus it's got a lot colder feel to it. I think I will work on the trailer for a bit, then see if the wind calms and head back to the woods early afternoon.
We went to bed last night and noticed the whole landscape was white. Got up this morning to half an inch of mostly sleet and a little snow on top. The whole mountainside was white. By noon it had all melted and everything is green again with the Forsythia blooming yellow in the front yard..
Same here yesterday, it stopped the light snow my noonish here and by 4:00 pm it was brown again. Too early here for any greening up, plants aren't stupid up here. :D
Been watching for pussy willows, nothing yet. It's still a month early.
26°F here this morning and the moon is just setting. Suppose to warm to upper 30's°F and start the rain/snow mix again into tomorrow. Yippee!! smiley_thumbsdown
I went out last night to cut some wood and had to dress like it was winter. :wacky:
26° now and tomorrow when I get up the ground will be white.
Thanks to Lake Superior, gusty NW winds, and a below zero wind chill, spring has went into hibernation and winter has returned. smiley_thumbsdown
I'd think more like Hudson's Bay arctic blast. ffcheesy
34°F here now. The snow/rain starts late this afternoon into Thursday. Never know, might actually be some accumulation. But not really convinced of it. :D
couple inches snow on the ground and lake effects all day blowing snow and squalls. The sun sure is warm when it comes out.
The best thing about all this cold weather is it only lasts for a day or two and then its Spring :sunny:
It was so warm in Virginia that I shut down the OWB. Fired it up again for the last few days. Today I had a huge gust of wind come roaring down the valley. You could hear it coming and stuff started flying horizontally. I immediately closed the doors on my metal garage and started to go inside when I heard a tree snap.
I turned and looked at it was in my log yard. It was rotted inside but outside it looked ok. Fell right across my main path through the logs. Yippee! More firewood!
Rain/snow mix started kicking it up this afternoon. Suppose to last all day tomorrow and half the night. More coming Saturday. 36°F here now.
This weekend look to be in for quite a splash
24° and 3 inches of snow. Mostly dry snow too. Stayed below freezing and looks to be that way for a couple days too. At least until Sunday.
Looks to be 8-12 inches of the white stuff coming on Saturday.
One year we just about got all of our snow in March. It snowed almost a foot 3-4 times in March.
Wet snow and 34°F for today. It's white out there on the ground, but just a skiff.
Yesterday I saw the first bear tracks in the corn stubble. It walked out the day before when the snow was wet. Not much snow, maybe 3" in that spot on the field edge. Surprised that there were not ponds of water on the surface. None. But the field would definitely be mucky if it were thawed.
I know there are bear on my land. My grandson shot one. But I have never seen one. I betcha they saw me. smiley_smug01
I forgot the wind. The wind is strong out there. Snow is a little heavy, so may not blow around much.
My winter gear is back on for a few days.
Right now the eye of the storm is overhead and some patches of blue and sun. But the radar shows the back end of the storm coming through later today for some more squalls for awhile. Ground never froze and that little skiff is melting in the sun. Still 34°F.
Cold here this morning. The 1/2 full glass jug of sap I left on the porch froze completely last night. No sap in the smoothie this morning. Winter is back for a few days for sure.
All white = no ticks for a spell at least :wink_2: . A few inches of fresh snow,
Wind and whiteouts at times overnight.
Bluebirds, blackbirds and robins are scratching their heads.
Curiouser and curiouser. It fir sure is back to cold again. Low in the 20's the last two nights, had a band of snow coming through last evening and the whole lawn turned white, another band in the dark hours this morning. No big deal, it's still March and winter. But this wind is killing me and keeping me out of the woods. 20-35mph pretty steady. It's ok if you can cover up exposed skin, but your face still takes a beating. The other issue ids falling debris and dropping trees with that kind of wind. 3 days now I am waiting and I am headed into the woodlot against my judgement because I have to make orders. I'll decide what 'thing' I am going to do when I get there, I have 3 options that are all productive and all need to get done.
Cold is fine, but I wish somebody would shut off the dang fan. :wacky:
Have not had much wind, snow coming straight down. Wet snow. Sun half out to. But never got any warmer than 34°F so far, has dropped back to 30°F now. I think the wind is coming tonight up this way, clearing and cold down in the teens. Warm back up about Tuesday 30's and 40's.
Today was a cold day and I do mean cold. I kept the car running all morning. Did get up to 28, but wind was really bad and I do mean bad. I even had a stocking hat on going to the garages today!!!
I had about 3 inches of snow on my truck. I got to work, no more then 9 miles away and they had at least 5 inches.
I cleaned off the steps for the dog and no way I had 5 inches here. I just have a kids plastic shovel to clear the steps and it took me only a few minutes to do it.
More coming Saturday.
Cold today if you were in the wind for sure, sweating if you were in a sheltered area. Some snow last night. it didn't melt, but it evaporated. I didn't want to cut today, but I am behind so against my better judgement I headed out. I cut just 3 simple trees and felled them in the direction of lean, easy right? Nope, I had to wedge all 3 because the wind was holding them up, so I had to drive them over into the wind. The last one got taken as it fell and the wind brought it about 30° off the fall line, but no big deal at all. Wind was 20-35mph all day. I bagged it and came home and split wood.
High today was 33 and low was 24. Tomorrow looks nicer with and overnight low of 18 forecast. The cold is great, the wind is NOT.
It reminded me of the joke of the Kansas chicken farmer. In a windstorm he watched one of his hens, with the wind at her back, lay the same egg 4 times. Then she turned around and laid 4 eggs at once. ffcheesy
16°F this morning and we started with the wind not long after my last post. It was like no wind, then boom, it arrived. Had some snow, but not more than an inch. It did drift across the drive way, maybe 4" deep. Wind and blowing snow kept the motion sensor light on at the garage most of the night. :uhoh: :snowball:
Looks like snow tomorrow. First day of spring, is more like first day of winter, if you ask me. Just as cold as February and the wind to make it more convincing. ffcheesy

You got that right!!
I have 16° and some wind. Might just get up to 32 today. But with that little bit of wind, it will feel colder.
Will have to wait until Wed. for temps above freezing day and night.
Seem like the last few years we always have a warm up and it stays warm.
This year is not that way.
Brrrrrr. 15* earlier and wind 30 ish at times. Sun is bright though :sunny:
Latest storm prediction is 7-13" snow Sat/Sun. Was tempted to put away
the snowblower but didn't. We've had some 2 footers in April years past.
Rankin Inlet, NU, Canada: "Mainly cloudy. Blizzard developing this morning. Blowing snow early this morning. Wind north 40 km/h gusting to 60. High minus 22. Wind chill minus 45 this morning and minus 37 this afternoon. Frostbite in minutes."
:snowball:
Yeah, Spring hasn't arrived in Canada just yet.
My oldest daughter is there on a business trip.

Raining hard here a few minutes ago.
Jim Rogers in NC
We have 1 1/2 inches of new snow and they are calling for up to 15 inches by Monday oh boy cant wait not.
Could be anywhere from 1" to 20" of snow up here. What a forecast, leave your options open. :D
16°F here this morning. Overcast, no wind.
We enjoyed the reprieve from winter however short lived.
Plows are out, big storm, stretching from N.Carolina to Maine.
12-17" predicted now. ffcheesy
Looks like a day that I will spend on here and keep the steps clear for the dog.
Snow all day.
There's one cleaning of the steps for the dog. :wacky:
It's a dry snow.
Looks like a long snow storm too. I see it getting done at mid night.
I just came in from feeding the OWB.
Turkeys out in the snow looking for food at 20°.
No snow here yet. I think it is suppose to hit late in the day. I went to the woodlot on the buggy quite early. I found a 18" fir across the road from the wind. Uprooted. Went back home for saw and splitting maul. Was nice sound solid fir, chalk white, as I bucked it all up and brought a full buggy load of firewood home. I had her rounded up on the buggy and some in on the seat. Probably twice as much as I normally load'er with. But I got it home, almost 3 miles away. Tossed it on the pile for next winter. ffwave
I started to clean up a EWP that broke off in the wind storm.
I'm not digging through the snow to get it cleaned up now.
I know I have a lot to clean up.
Pretty miserable day here. We are in a 'warm slot between two slighter colder regions. They are getting snow (I think) and the temp here is just at 33 so we have freezing rain. All the White Pines are drooped down and only melting very slowly. The trees seem to be holding up, but the FD's are busy with tree on wires calls.
Wind is down, but rain and cold. supposed to hang in until well after dark.
Not going to get any warmer here than low 20'sF. I know the hands was cold sawing up that fir. Feels just like February. ffcheesy
Old Greenhorn, we had a storm like that last year. smiley_thumbsdown
This one will stay all snow here.
At the coast things are different, snow, freezing rain, sleet, rain.
Sometimes we get a spring storm and it will be a heavy snow.
But this is still March, no matter what anyone says. ffcheesy
I just finished up plowing 5 inches of heavy wet lake snow. Where did spring go :veryangry:
Quote from: 21incher on March 23, 2024, 11:23:49 AMI just finished up plowing 5 inches of heavy wet lake snow. Where did spring go :veryangry:
We got 7. It aint getting plowed or blown or anything added by me other than watching it melt.

Our dog only has 2 inch legs so I felt sorry for her plowing with her belly to get out and poop. More snow then we had in all of February.
Turkeys still outback. Lots of leaves being exposed.
Still snowing.
I really can't remember when we had a long storm like this one. Couple years ago?
Maybe that year when we got all of our snow in March and we got at least a foot each time.
All indications here, with the nature of the snow and the coverage thus far, I'd bet 3-4" is all we'll get here unless it's a lot heavier tonight. That real fine dry stuff that don't add up very fast.
we have had spots of rain mixed with sleet. drops on the concrete, but not enough to make it wet.
Turkeys just about in the same spot all day.
Guess all the grain for the deer must be gone, because they have not even been in that area.
Still a snowing.
We can see the house on top of the hill. But before dark, I think it will start to snow hard again.
Still snowing at a little past 9 at night.
Maybe a foot? hard to tell at night.
Saw the turkeys heading for where they roost about 6 tonight.
Hourly report says done snowing at midnight.
I think the snowing must have stopped around 3:00 am here. But it really started adding up after dark. All day there was maybe 2" out there, now there is 14" going by the measuring tape on the steps. Now the wind is churning up for good measure. 20°F this morning. I think that is about as much snow as we had the previous 4 months. Will give the snow blower a chance to clean out the cobwebs. It's one of the very few predictions they hit right all winter. And I mean very few. ffcheesy ffcheesy :snowball: Oh well, will wait for daylight and enjoy the wood fire.
Now that I have the plowing all done, I'd revise the snow depth to more like 20" here. 3hr job with the walk behind blower. And it's no small drive way.
I have only been out to shovel off the steps to the dog. I have no idea how much we have. I hate to say over a foot but looks like it.
I do have to go out to the OWB to fill that.
stay tuned. smiley_smug01
I think it's 20° and sunny.
Just the most miserable day a man could ask for yesterday. Steady rain all day and temps hung right around 34°, freezing rain before dawn that stayed on the trees pretty much all day, then it dropped below freezing at dusk and a little more ice as a parting gift along with a jump in the wind speed to around 15mph. I went through 2 jackets and a pair of soaked boots running from the shop to the trailer as I tried to get some work done. I had a chill in my bones all evening.
This morning is nothing but blue skies, started with 20MPH winds but that dropped right down at dawn to about 4-10mph. Temp is just at 27° now, but that sunshine sure does look good.
At least you did not lose power for 2-3-4 days.
Looks to be like 18 inches of just about all snow here. Something was coming down at 9 last night.
I shoveled the back door out last night and the steps for the dog. Looks to be at least 6 inches came down after that.
I'm just kidding, but we got more snow now then we have all winter. smiley_smug01
I'm really not that far off. I don't think we had this much snow, on the ground, all winter.
April fools about a week early. ffcheesy
Bout the same here Ray, measured 20" out in the open, drifts 2' or more.
Must have come in really hard for 3-4hrs last night, like 3-4" an hr.
On the bright side its all dry snow so moves easy.
Not so good for S. Maine, ice storm, major power outages and tree damage.
I do underground weather and saw the amount per hour in the night. It said almost 3 inches an hour, which I thought was wrong. But maybe not. Glad I did not have to go out when that was going on.
We got some snow after 9 last night.
I know from 8:00 pm onward, I couldn't see past the porch deck. :D
And yeah, 20" is more snow than we had in 4 months. No exaggeration on that. :snowball:
Going to drop down near 0°F by tomorrow morning.
Snow plow has just showed up.
Congratulations on finally get some real snow SD !
Just spent a couple hrs digging out from that one. wow.
It's barely 30°F, but the sun is melting the driveway down to bare gravel. March sun has power. ffwave
Windows have been open here, kept a small fire to dry off the gear from snow plowing.
Shop is delayed a week because of the snow and it's going to rain most of the week on top of that.
I was out there 2 1/2 hours. I thought it was a dry snow. But it would stick onto the auger of the snow blower. Never had that happen in more then 20 years. Had to stop and clean it off. All that it would really do is push the snow and then I knew it was plugged up. At first I thought I broke a shear pin but I could see the chain moving.
did you try to spray it with Pam spray?
Nope. smiley_smug01
well, hopefully it will snow overnight, so you can try it tomorrow! :snowball: ffsmiley ffsmiley ffsmiley
weather guessers missed for my part of NH again! We were in the rain and dusting to an inch of snow at the end....NOPE! We had enough to cover the skylight at 5am yesterday, about 4in at 7 am, then a bit more snow, then sleet and ice, then rain and sleet mix for til dark. Got another, real breif shot of snow around 10pm. Our power flicked but all we lost was cable/internet. The farm is a different power company and a big OLD sugar maple across the street lost a large stem. It split off and stripped the power pole. Somehow didn't break it, but there weren't a lick of hardware left on it. Limbs down all over town. I waited to plow til this am so my dirt driveway wouldn't be an ice rink. Wife left for the farm as my truck was warming up and I stoked the woodstove. I about jumped out of my boots when she knocked on the basement door! Tree across the driveway, missed my tractor by about 18inches. Not a productive weekend, but not one we'll soon forget. Farm just got power back, internet is in and out.
18°F here now, so not as cold as predicted. They hardly ever get that right. The app says it's 10°F, sorry but it ain't. ffcheesy ffcheesy
62°'s here this morning which is kinda hot and there is a fairly serious storm approaching later this evening. Hot plus a cold front sets us up for a reason to be uneasy with the possibility of hail and tornadic activity.
Neighbor up the road had 4°F this morning along a small creek.
I had snow then rain then snow. 14" I think. Waited till after the storm. I did not put my 9' plow on the one-ton. I went out and grabbed the JD and just made some passes to open it up here. Going to let the sun melt it. ffcheesy
The snow was sticky with the rain and John was pushing 16'+ of snow in front of the bucket with it 4" up off the ground.
Now with all the snow coming off the tin roof of the mill shed all 300'+ of it I might have to get John to move the 4'+ high banks in front of the doors. ffcheesy
I think the MUD will be back too. ffcheesy
Calls coming in for lumber, I'm opening on April 4th and have $4,000 of lumber going out first thing.
With the nice weather before everybody wanted to get out and do stuff. Not so much now. ffcheesy
A perfect weather day here yesterday, looks to be the same today. Spent yesterday working on the trailer a little, then walking in the woods and messing around and, as always, marking a few mushroom trees when we find them.
It's a shame to just sit around today waiting for my back issue to catch up to the work needs, but what is a guy gonna do? The more I work, even easy stuff, the worse it gets. Walking in the woods mindlessly did seem to help quite a bit though. Steep ground did not. Driving anywhere is agony though. But the weather is really nice today. Crisp and clear at 32°. :wink_2:
37° and all the snow slid off the porch rooves. Still some on the barn, but not a heavy load. The sun feels real warm on your face today. Got the big dormer window wide open and a bedroom window. About 85° in here. :sunny: :sunny:

Hit 45°F yesterday and that :sunny: settled the new snow 2" by days end. Driveway is pretty much bare of snow or ice except a patch in the shade in front of the garage. ffwave
26°F this morning, see a few stars and the moon still. Nasty weather returns tonight and into Saturday. Whoooppee!!
4 inches wet snow on ice. Makes an ugly morning to get to work. Won't last long and we needed the moisture, but there are better ways to get it. 22 degrees and blowing there will be some cold calves today.
Went for a second walk after dinner here and saw a river otter up at the creek. I have not seen one there for a couple years. I do see tracks once in awhile. A lot of beaver ponds below the road toward the border with Maine. The creek flows into Maine eventually and dumps into the Pestile R. There are brook trout in that creek.
Hit 42F here today. Snow is settling. No layers to it so if we get mild and rain it will melt a lot quicker than layered snow.
Drizzled here in the afternoon. I went to a garage this morning, about 20 minutes away and there was a drizzle at 28°.
A very light rain at around 5 tonight.
35° now, but might be a freezing rain in the morning.
Rain here most of the day. We needed it. It has been dry and fairly warm and windy and fires were popping up in several areas around the state.
Light rain and fog here at this early hour, 34°F. Weather app says it's clear skies. I must be imagining the rain. ffcheesy ffcheesy
Looks like a dry weekend for us!! The last 3 has been wet or the last one white.
I have 34° this morning and a very light mist.
No 50's in sight. Have a couple days that will get in the high 40's. Not like the past few years, where it gets in the 60's at times.
Rain coming in tomorrow.
With the steady rain and drizzle we are down to 9" of snow left out of that 20" snow storm. It's suppose to keep on and on. Pretty steady rainfall here now. Sometimes it slows to a mist then returns. 42°F here now.
Temperature has been steady here, rain to. Snow depth is 7" now. ffwave
Was 45° today. Saw the sun, but not for long or all that bright.
Quite a lot of rain and has been raining for days
We got a rainfall warning from now til Saturday
40°F here, rain, and 5" left to melt. Of course there is more in drifts and where it was pushed with a plow. But over all depth under the open sky is 5" remaining. ffwave
Later today and Friday is suppose to be hard rain up here, warnings issued.
Soggy and foggy . Keeping a smudge going at 38* fire_smiley
Looks almost like that snowstorm we got last weekend. It starts and don't want to stop. But this time all rain. They are calling for just about 24 hours of rain.
14c out last night
Peepers
Yesterday morning was cold but the evening warmed up to the low 40's melted most of the snow. Going to hit 60 ish today. Hoping the wind is mild.
Raining hard over night here in NC. Supposed to rain most of today.
We even heard some thunder.
Jim Rogers
It's been 48+ hrs of rain here, not always hard like now, but rain and fog with it. Another 2 days of it. I don't see that the creek is real high yet, by tomorrow it will be. They are saying could be thunderstorm down pours at times.
Boy am I glad I forced myself out to cut yesterday! Temps are nominally about the same, winds similar and low, some rain both days, BUT today is much 'nastier'. Yesterday with light rain off and on as I worked, the air felt fairly dry and the rain increased in the afternoon. Right now the air feels soaking wet, it's damp and snotty, with humidity at 99%, rained through the night until 4am, then stopped, but it's hanging in the air. The temp has ben very slowly dropping since midnight.
So, very similar conditions, but very different feels to the day.
Starting to hear the roar of running water in the hood.
We are down a foot of snow since Sunday and with the rain
coming down could see some flooding by tomorrow. Back to spring
and mud .
Still a light rain tonight.
I never did have to run the wipers steady today. Sometimes it stopped for 15 minutes at a time.
Was a steady rain first thing this morning.
2" of snow remaining at the same spot I measured since the big snow bomb. 38°F here this morning. Been a steady rain here for many hours. We had a 1 hr break after dinner Thursday, so I went for a walk, by the time I got back it was rolling back in and has never stopped. The grassy area has a nice squishy feeling. ffcheesy
Looks like rain here until 11 this morning. These last 2 storms don't like to stop when they got started.
Should see some sun this weekend!!!! Have not seen much of that what seems like a week.
Plenty of water around here if anyone needs some. ffcheesy
Still 38* with a smudge going. Looking forward to some :sunny:
Lots of rain here, never stopped all day. I'm surprised none of the fields have ponds in them after almost 20" of snow went poof plus add in the rain. Been the nastiest month for bad weather this year. I wonder what April will dump on us? ffcheesy ffcheesy
We just had a steady week of rain!!!
Still snow here. Had the rain to take it away, but with temps in the high 30's and not much even in the mid 40's kept it on the cool side.
Sun is out full bore!!!
But that wind is making things bad. smiley_thumbsdown
It is 40° but sure does not feel like it.
Steady rain here. Again.
We are in a pattern with a low spinning of the coast sending drier air that is spawning very scattered showers, heavy at times. Not quite thunderstorms. Trying to get a little room addition weather tight before I leave next week.
Yes one nasty week after another. 5 day storm here with mostly rain, took more of the previous weekend snow off. But ended with 3" of heavy wet snow and wind that I hand scooped off the drive way. We last power yesterday morning until 4:00 pm. And internet was lost in the night from wind and heavy snow on trees. Got that back this evening sometime. What's next?! smiley_thumbsdown It did clear out late in the day and nice blue and sun before dark with a glimpse of Mnt Katahdin. :sunny:
22°F this morning with stars and moon out. I'm glad that week is over. ffwave ffcool ffcheesy ffcheesy

I concur.
Get ready for round 2. Starting Wed night another big snow dump predicted.
Winter be lingering.
I see a 12 hr one Thursday night into Friday showing up. Nothing as long duration like last week. But still rain/snow mix. smiley_thumbsdown
Will hopefully have the shop up with a steel roof before that. :D
28°F this morning. Moon and stars, so a clear start. High of around 40°F expected. That northerly air flow keeps it from warming very fast during the day. :snowball:
Starting the wood shop construction this morning. ffsmiley
Will have some sun today!!! Should hit 50 today. I had 28° this morning.
Oh yea, more snow coming Wed-Thursday.
68° this morning with a high of 85° today. Yikes!!
Thankfully we are forecast to see 42° Friday morning. ffsmiley
Saw the first of the wild flowers breaking ground here, colts foot. It's a yellow flower that may look like dandelion. It's growing near an old spring that never freezes. I have seen a couple willows in flower lately to.
Got to 45°F today.
Is this an April fools joke or what ?
From the National Weather Service for this area:
WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
LATE THURSDAY NIGHT...
* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations greater than
18 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph.
I saw a steady 52° today.
Did see 54 for maybe an hour.
Oh yea, snow. :wacky:
Just about like last time, which was a little bit more then a week ago.
Possible snow storm Thursday probably rain though
Well the weekend was pretty nice. Got out in the woods on Sunday and it was SO nice it was hard to thinking aout working. We did some trail 'finding' and some clearing to get access. We messed aorunf talking and planning next steps and I loaded and took some logs out to a staged trailer. But did I mention it was SO nice. The kind of day where you just want to sit in the sun in shirtsleeves, chat, and enjoy the perfect weather. It was in the mid 50's. I didn't make any more headway on my current order and that decision forced me out there today to get more logs in. Today was heavy overcast all morning, a 5 minute burst of sun around 2pm, then more solid overcast. Rain beginning tomorrow afternoon I think until Friday. They say maybe some snow, sleet, freezing rain, and a partridge in a pear tree. :wink_2: We get what we get, but I wanted to get this particular order closed out. New client, somewhat needy. :wink_2: But today I stayed almost all dry all day, just sprinkles.
The weather service seems to be leading the hype charge on this storm and really drumming it up. We shall see.
I'm hoping to have steel on the shop roof before Thursday. Prediction is for up to a foot of wet snow. DOH!! Les miserablé !! ffcheesy
30°F here this morning. Another clear day coming and 40's temps. Our first 50° looks like Monday next.
Turned a little red on my pale winter skin yesterday afternoon working on a deck, mid 70's. Decided to ditch the flannel lined pants this morning. 80 today, snow tomorrow. Don't clean out the truck yet! Sarvis, (serviceberry, shadblow), started blooming 2 days ago, cherries are in full bloom, pears are set.
36°F here this morning and mostly cloudy.
Got to 45°F yesterday and that north breeze made it feel like winter even in the sun when walking into it. Wind to my back, and it felt fine walking home. :sunny:
28*, 10 -20" wet snow in the forecast coupled with high winds. Not good.
Shortened up the top link on my 3 point snowblower about an inch for the last storm, down to
soft bare gravel and stone.
Not getting much woods clean up done, wet.
First tree swallow arrived yesterday, had a couple real nice days for woodworking
in the shop, doors wide open 45 -50* . Been building 1" x 12" Pine board doors for the tractor shed,
10' opening 7' tall.
I did the same on my snow blower too.
Will be snow blowing the driveway in the morning so I can go to work.
Turns out it cleared here and nothing but sunshine currently. Not even a sign of a cloud. :sunny:
Lousy weather in general. Started raining yesterday around noon and continues to do so. Getting close to 2" now and more overnight and tomorrow. Temp dropped through the day today after sun-up. Not much wind but the power went out at 5:30pm and came back on at 7:30. Took the wife out to dinner.
Power just blipped again about 15 minutes ago and took out a long post I was writing. Still waiting for cable to come back online. Hopefully Friday it will clear.
For those prone to power interruptions I strongly recommend a UPS, uninterrupted power supply or battery backup. I have 2, one on the TV and one on the computer and router. Not only do they prevent electronics from hard shutdown and loss of data, they provide surge protection. If the power flickers or goes off, they instantly provide power to keep the item powered long enough to shut it down properly.
It's not that big a deal that I worry about it, but poor weather does have a way of enhancing little issues to an aggravating level. I was right in the middle of a survivor episode and writing that post. Both gone and cable took 25 minutes to come back online after the power was back, internet was pretty quick.
But when it went out for a couple of hours and I decided we'd go for diner out, the truck battery was flat dead. NO idea why, no indications prior. Never had a hint of an issue. I might have a electrical leak. I have it charging now and will look into it when the rain stops.
You know how it is, when you are already ticked off, then some other little thing happens and you just loose it. When it went out the second time and I lost that post, which I will NOT retype, I really lost it and flipped out in a way I haven't done since before I retired. I even surprised me with my reaction. I have a feeling that truck battery thing is going to take some figuring out. I don't think the battery is bad.
I was going to be open for customers tomorrow. But, with all the snow coming. I'm going to wait till next week. ffwave
We have a saying here... If you can see the Mountain, it's going to rain. If you can't see the Mt, it's already raining.
This is the "It's going to rain look" from today.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10460/20240404_122508s.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353316)
Nothing serious, but have had light rain most of the afternoon.
The saying here is, if I can't see the Oakfield windmill lights, the snow will be here soon. And I can't see them this morning. ffcheesy ffcheesy
30°F and breezy on the porch. Snow pending, for 3 days. :snowball:
Wind and snow!!! Maybe 6 inches? Hard to tell the way the wind is blowing it around. But we have at least 4 inches. Still snowing, all day too. Seem to be a dry snow and not a wet snow that happens in the spring.
28° helps out on that. :wacky:
Looks like another long storm.
Wind and sleet all night. It made a racket hitting the house. Snowing now but not heavy, just wind blown. The weather service says winds of 26-31mph with gusts up to 60mph! The snow isn't mounting up, it's just blowing by. I don't think it's going to hit the ground till it gets to Maine. ffcheesy
Oops, the lights just flickered. It's done that a few times this morning.
Well, THAT deteriorated rapidly! ffcheesy We are right on the line that the weather service uses as a climate zone marker. Our forecast was for no accumulation, but just a mile to our NW they were calling for a few inches of sleet and snow, as you went further north and west the accumulations got deeper. Well, when I went to bed we had a white coating of sleet over much of the ground. When I woke up, we had 1-2" of that 'non accumulating' type stuff. It just snowed for another 20 minutes, no stopped. I am not going to put the plow back on that I took off last Friday! Let it melt, I don't care.
They have cut the amount of predicted precip today by about 80%, but it's full overcast, very damp, and quite gloomy. Another shop day. High temp for today might hit 39° at best. Snow at this elevation is a bit unusual in April, but I have run into in May, just 15 miles away, but 1,000ft higher in elevation. SO I am just going to leave it.
An inch or 2 of wet slop. I saw the town truck go by plowing. It will melt soon enough and spring is coming this weekend. I am going out to spread some grass seed on the snow . My dad always said to spread the grass seed on the last snow and it will sprout the best. Always interesting what we remember from our parents.
Snowstorm today 2 inches down probably a couple more, the winds are the main issue, as I imagine the snow will melt quickly next day or so
Snow just began here not long ago. I see the forecast on accumulation has been down graded considerably, but it's going to be a 3 day storm no matter what. ffcheesy 33°F out there with wind.
9" snow so far.
No end to it in sight. Heavier than the last batch but
the Pine trees are shedding it so that's a good thing.
Spruce and fir not so much.
Back to snowmobiling and skiing. ffcheesy
Not much to it here yet, just scattered flurries, nothing on the ground.
Looks like going to all rain here and overnight in the upper 30's. The snow is mostly on the east coast of the province. Mostly rain tomorrow.
Quote from: cutterboy on April 04, 2024, 07:06:56 AMThe weather service says winds of 26-31mph with gusts up to 60mph! The snow isn't mounting up, it's just blowing by. I don't think it's going to hit the ground till it gets to Maine. ffcheesy
I believe it!!!!
I missed the news. No idea how much we got. The wind is blowing it around some. Maybe 8 inches?
Still nothing for snow, windy at 15 mph here, a light mist for rain. Didn't loose power, yet. Doesn't take much sometimes with trees growing up into the wires around here. smiley_thumbsdown So far we've gotten off lucky. 36°F
Somewhere north of a foot so far and a couple more inches of snow to come.
No loss of power here but it has turned wetter so its sticking to the Pines now.
Digging out should be fun .
I am seeing a few big flakes mixing in here, nothing is sticky around much so far.

Heavy and Wet. Lots of snapped off trees... killed the wife's favourite big maple up behind the garden... we needed moisture but oi vey!
Just got my power back on. Went off last night around 5 pm.
12+" so wet the snow is blue and hard to move. I have a bunch of trees to cut out of the road too just to get to the mill.
All fun. But, I would not want to live anywhere else. NH is the best. Live free or die.
ffcheesy
Hasn't done much here since 10:00 am, but I see something coming over the hills. Weather report says just showers and flurries for the duration. Never amounted to beans so far. :sunny:
Woodroe, Leeds got hit hard with down trees. Auburn had ice after the snow and brought down lines and poles.
We missed all that crud , thankfully. Wound up with 14" in the end.
Had a terrible time moving it. Snowblower wanted to ride up a few inches.
But its all melting fast so no big deal.
Lots of folks lost their power though.
I had the same problem with my rear mounted one too. But, I do have it tipped back so it would not dig into the dirt driveway too. I would think that had a lot to do with it too. Hard to move the snow with equipment when the ground is not frozen.
Squeaked by here with pretty much nothing for snow, at least it didn't add anything to the snow pile. Old snow was actually melting as well. By Monday afternoon with a full day of sun it's suppose to be in the high 50's here. First 50+ since the end of March. Not staying that warm for very long. Back to the 40's the next day and maybe bumping 50° the end of the week then 40's. Looks like 2-3 days of showers coming by Thursday next. Gradually warming each week, I'm seeing highs of 40's and 50's after this week instead of the 30's. Sunday is suppose to be near 50°, but not quite, peeks of sun. :sunny: No wind here this morning, 32°F. Suppose to be near 40°F this afternoon. Peepers will soon be out. I'm seeing some aspen flowers coming out now, not long streamers yet.
Back into gloomy days here. Solid overcast since Tuesday. This morning the temp dropped from 39 to 34 in just 20 minutes. a little sprinkle came with it. High yesterday was 43 for about ten minutes. ffcheesy Gonna be solid overcast all day I suppose. Last night we got some pretty good wind still. Yesterday I was out cutting in a stiff wind but 1/2 mile away there was almost none. Weird. There was also and Earthquake in NNJ while I was cutting. a pretty big one for them (#3 of all time I think) and lots of folks around here clearly felt it, plus the aftershock 3 hours later. I didn't feel a thing out in the woods.
High for today only 46. Tomorrow maybe we get sun.
No sun AGAIN today. smiley_thumbsdown
Snowed just about enough to cover the ground. All day snow-rain showers.
32° and should get up to 40 today.
Monday looks to be a warm day and sun!!!!
gradual warming and 60o as I type. too windy to burn yesterday. blowing our cold weather to the north at 10 to 20 mph yesterday.
We got hit with rain, ice, sleet, snow. Started Wed night, Thurs early am we lost power then it came back long enough for me to get ready and head to work
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/18262/IMG_20240404_070638.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353339)
I got my driveway done and 2 neighbors, small stuff falling all around, new getting to work wad gonna be an adventure. Went to drop my boy at the farm and found my first challenge

I had a saw with me so cut it and pushed the junk out of the way. 2 more issues heading into work, but made it safe. Still no power Sat at 4pm, but we did get internet back, so that is something
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/18262/KIMG0014.JPG) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353340)
Looks like heavy wet stuff for sure.
Had a snow/rain squall pass by not long ago. We was lucky this round. Got to 38°F.
granite, it sounds like you work for the USPS. ffcheesy heavy rain interrupted my work today.
Doc,
Can't be using them sick days for just a little snow and ice event! Got to save them for special occasions
The eves to the house dripped all day.
At least the snow storms are heading in the right directions for amounts. Snow was really all gone here.
Than a foot and a half came, that was almost gone, then we got 8-10 inches, so maybe the next one will be 6 inches.
Just now getting cleaned up around here. Two tornadoes touched down in my county and one was about 5 miles away.Trees down everywhere and my neighbor and I had to cut a big Sycamore out of the road to get out of the hollow.Tornadoes are mostly unheard of around here and I didn't even know we had a warning siren until I heard it Tuesday.Pretty scary and I hope it doesn't become more common.
We get a tornado every once in awhile in summer in random spots. Most of the time it's high winds off thunderstorms. Up north of here is more elevated and big cleared fields on hill tops, hardly a tree in site. Houses on rural roads across those hills. They get lots of those high winds. It's windy enough around here, but we never cleared off all the tree groves, yet. They are working on it though, any elevated maple ground that is relatively flat is target for potato fields around here. Hard to find good thinning left on private land, mostly aspen, swamp land, blowdown or steep hills left once everything else is cleared to make a field. Not ground sought for clearing saw work. :D
30°F with a light breeze, overcast. Won't clear until tonight, but might get some glimpses of sun today. Predicted high near 48°F today.
Saw a gobbler with two hens Friday morning. 30 geese that day to. Saw turkey tracks up by the woodlot on the dirt road Saturday. Saw lots of ducks yesterday on ponds. Those mallard drakes still hanging around on the beaver pond. Almost more ducks than pond space. :D
I might see the sun at noon time!!!
At least it's not raining out!!!
Maybe 46° today.
34°F here, but in the 20's in other places nearby. Clear as a bell with stars. Could hit 60°F for the first time in 2024. Took a couple days off because of the weather which turned out to be insignificant, we will resume work on the shop today. ffcool
We almost hit 50 yesterday. Made a lot of mud, and watched the snow pack fade away. Got power back around 5pm, almost 4 days from this storm.
Good luck with the shop!!!
Maybe 60 today here too. Full sun too!!!!!!!!!!!!
Field has some bare spots, I would think the snow will be gone by the time I get home tonight.
Mosher pond is about half out.
Eclipse today.
A great day for an ellipse!!!
Not hardly a cloud in the sky.
I saw 60 a few times driving around.
I enjoyed watching the ellipse. Got a little dark, like dusk, it was different.
Shadows too.
I won't see another one.
Yep, a cool short moment. We got to 58°F here. When the eclipse happened at 100 %, and then the sun reappeared I noticed the temp dropped 4 degrees. It was late afternoon and the temp never recovered that late in the day. ffsmiley We had a cool north breeze as well, and man was that some real dry air yesterday, down in the teens.
30°F this morning, stars. Another clear day on tap.
32° and looks to be sunny again today. I better enjoy it, because the next 4-5 days looks cloudy.
I would hate to see the sun more than 3 days in a row. :wacky:
Melted some snow yesterday, put the snowmobile away, again.
Ticks are back with open ground showing, picked off 3 crawling and 2 dug in
on the dog yesterday. Shaping up to be a rough season for ticks.
But a couple days of warm and sun is welcome .
Started the wood fire season with a new box of 250 wooden matches, down to about 50.
Another warm sunny day.
Life is good!!!!!
Ice out on Mosher pond this afternoon sometime. There was still ice on it at about 3. I came home at 5:30 and the ice is gone.
Yesterday was much cooler, got to 46°F in the afternoon. The north wind was cool on the porch.
Stars again this morning. 30°F now and late day showers coming with highs in the mid 50's. 3 days of rain ahead. smiley_thumbsdown
Got a bonfire to light up.
Ticks are out here as well, none on my land thanks to the fire! But went to neighbours and their land never burned, had a bunch of tiny ones you could hardly see, ones that usually get you
This week keeps getting better, my day was full of sunshine (except for the eclipse day) and the mood was up, gotta love to be alive in such wheater
Well yesterday was just a perfect day, maybe a tad warm, it hit 70°. I took the blankets off the smaller shop garage door and opened it up (warmer outside then in for a change). Around 4pm I copped an attitude and opened up a chair and sat it the sun and thought about 'stuff'. That led to getting a beer and the end of the work day. ffcheesy
Today the forecast was for .02" of rain spread through the day and I still have logs to get in, so I figured I would work through the drizzle. Pretty good canopy where I am cutting, even without leaves. SO I unloaded my trailer, hooked up and dragged it down to the area and staged it. I brought a rain jacket and went down to clear some trail while it was drizzling, but then it changed to 'RAIN', so I hung out for a while and bagged it. I came home and painted the inside of my trailer in dim light. :wink_2: (looks better that way.) Just had lunch and we are approaching .25" of rain, about ten times the forecast. Wonder what the heavy rain will look like in a day or so.
Guess I'll get back to it.

Good mood is always good. ffcool ffcool ffcheesy
Hate to, umm, douse a good mood, but 3 or 4 days of wet starting tonight. Was a nice day though, 54°F was the high around here.
Only thing we have this time of year is house flies on the siding of the house and some Asian lady beetles around, but today the beetles weren't around. Nothing bites here until the end of May. ffwave
38°F and showers for today it seems. Suppose to get into the mid 40's here. Looks like heavy rain tomorrow and pretty significant rain Saturday. When it rains it pours. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy
38° here too and rain all day. Looks the same for the next day too. Then showers on Sat.
Well one bright :sunny: thing at the end of the rain tunnel is the electrician is coming over today to see what is required to wire up the shop. ffcool
Just went off the hill to put my trash in the bin and we have some major flooding going on.Drove on down to the mouth of the hollow to check on the main creek and I'm afraid some of the people down there are getting water in their houses.Didn't hang around long down there as water is lapping the bottom of the bridge which is normally about 20 feet above the creek.Still raining, hope everyone is ok.
Yesterday it "rained" just enough to keep things wet.
But today looks like it will rain steady.
40° here this morning.
40 here and rain. I'm happy I have a roof over the mill.
44°F here and just a fog/mist and wind so far. Suppose to get heavy rain at some point. Never know with these things. ffcheesy
Mid 50's today, suppose to hit 60°F tomorrow.
Another inch of rain coming today and tonight. Seems like mud season will never end :veryangry:. High winds and getting cold again this afternoon. Starting to see buds on the trees.
61° at 6am this morning! I thought the thermometer broke, but no. Wednesday we got .27" of rain, Thursday we got .68" and today we have .41 so far. Temp has been rising since midnight, weird.
We are expecting some 40mph wind gusts today with increasing rain and thunder in the middle of the day.
3 days i a row I am kept out of the woods.
Well, every time I look at updates for predicted rain it puts it further away in time. So much for heavy rain, looks like a fizzle so far. ffcheesy ffcheesy Just a fog or mist here so far.
50°F here now.
Got 3 inches of rain yesterday in a short period of time.Electric was off last night but came back on today.Smaller creeks are going down but I figure rivers are still raising.Light rain today and getting cooler.I've been all morning cleaning debris out of the main road where the ditch lines were full of leaves and sticks and opened up the stopped up culverts.Neighbors set in their houses and watched. My driveway was not damaged as I keep my ditches cleaned out.One neighbor thanked me but most do not and never try to help.If the road is blocked they'll stay home till someone else clears it out.I guess that's the world we live in.
A fine rain driven by wind. I came in from making tomato stakes up at the woodlot this afternoon, about 2 hrs, cutting and sharpening what must be at least 50 stakes. That much is ready anyway for this years crops.
Rain was so hard at times today could not see across the mill yard. Now I have MUD.
48°F here this morning, still breezy, not much rain out of it. Deck is dry. Looks like showers today and even tomorrow. ffcheesy Clouds rain, rain clouds, ho hum. ffcheesy
Suppose to hit 60° today.
Another rain event has mostly ended. One - 2 inches alot of it yesterday.
Soggy sums it up best.
The ground was already saturated before it started so it
all just ran off fairly quickly.
Some nice warmer days ahead for drying out, again.
Get by today and we have 4 days of sun!!!
Been a good cool spring.
Past years it warms up into the 70's and then we get a hard frost. So far, no long high temps.
We got another inch and a half of rain yesterday. Then we got a little over an inch last night. Calling for rain tomorrow again. We just cant get out of this wet cycle.
Just short of an inch of rain yesterday kept me out of the woods for the 3rd day in a row. Some pretty stiff winds too. Only .02" forecast for today, but that's exactly what 'they' said on Wednesday when it rained steady all afternoon.
I altered my plan and will make another attempt today. When you get this much rain over several days even if it's not raining at the moment the trees are dripping on you all day and you get wet anyway. It's solid overcast now and 15° cooler than this time yesterday. But I gotta get some logs cut and moved.
40°F this morning and cloudy, a little breeze.
Didn't quite hit 60° yesterday and had an afternoon shower. Sun came out around noon for awhile before that. Bluebirds are back.
We saw one bluebird on the fence yesterday.
The sun is out!!!!
I looked at the 10-day forecast and only one day, Friday, shows no sun!!!! :sunny:
Maybe things will dry out. Then I hope it remembers to rain again. :wacky:
Nothing really above 60 coming either.
A slow warm up this year. So far.
Doesn't look quite a s good here Ray but it DOES look to be improving. Maybe we will climb out of the mud this week. Dried up some here yesterday with the high winds. Sun and pretty stiff breezes again today till tonight then calling for some scattered tstorms. Maybe they will miss us.
Still calling for two dry days in a row and that will help quite a bit. I'm hoping.
I don't expect much dry weather until May up here. I'm on roads with the buggy that I would not drive with the pickup until mid May, normally. Still greasy slime unless a pure gravel road. Still snow in the road on the cross road over the ridge. That is a hard gravel road. A couple places the snow always hangs on out there.
Sun till 3 pm. Almost 60 Raked half the yard. Rain now.
Mud in the mill yard.
I forgot what time we lost the sun. smiley_thumbsdown The clouds moved in and that was it!!!!
92o
Looks like both Friday and Sat will be all clouds now. I knew it was too good to be true.
42°
Cloudy/foggy and 44° here right now. No rain in the forecast for today! First time in 5 days! Yesterday around 2pm we got pushed out of the woodlot by the rain. It would come in spurts, and when it spurted it would rain pretty good, then stop, then start again 20 minutes later. So only 0.2" but enough to drive me to shop and trailer work. I also had to keep a smudge fire going to dry out the shop air.
Hopefully today is better and thing 'might' dry out. :wink_2:
Was cloudy here and peeks of sun now and again. Was also some showers around, but where I was at cutting brush it was dry all day long. On the way home probably hit 6 different showers. Never rained at the house all day. Was 50°F here today.
Been hearing the froggies now for 3 days.
I just heard the peepers tonight and the only reason I heard them I was about 20 feet from them. When they really get going, we can hear them up to our house.
Maples are in blossom and are red. Probably been out, but I just noticed them last night. Been cloudy here so that maybe why I missed them.
Sun most of the day!!!
Sun till 330. I was cutting lumber and had a 1 ton full of slabs to chip. Then the rain came. I called it a day and took my sister out for a seafood dinner.
Off to a cool start at 34°, then in the mid 50's, but that is no surprise at this time of year.
Second dry day in a row and we are making progress. I split and stacked all day yesterday and plan the same for today. But one more dry day and I'lll be thinking of firing up the timberjack.
Was 38F here this morning and clear skies, but everywhere else was white frost in the grass and fir trees. Clouded over by 9:00 am. Had a sprinkle, nothing to make it wet. 44F was the high here. They called for mid 50's, didn't happen here. Suppose to be down in the 20's tomorrow morning in some places and clear tonight and tomorrow. Suppose to be mid 50's. We'll see. :sunny:
I think I have sun for the next 5 days ffcool
Was 32°F this morning at home, got to 46F I think. Not full sun, but enough to make it a decent day. :sunny:
Bluebirds are busy around them nest boxes. This morning the lawn was crawling with robins everywhere. I see the pheobes are back to. Have not seen a tree swallow yet, too early.
Another cool morning at 34° but should be in the 50's today. Been a breeze lately, that makes it feel on the cool side.
But better then rain.
The 10 days looks good for sun.
Friday and Saturday is showing some sun now!!!
30°F here this morning and sunny. Mid 50's for the high.
We wire the shop today. ffwave
Frosty mornings here but warms up quick with sun shining.
Loons are back so open water in the hood.
Seeing deer again too.
Beautiful stretch of weather on tap.
Cooler today and rainy since yesterday afternoon. Temp is 45° now and supposed to hang between 42 and 47 until around mid morning tomorrow. Yesterday was nice in the morning but the rain began around 3pm and got heavy around 4am waking me up.
I need shop time anyway.
Looking like pretty good weather for the PrOject with no real chance of rain until Sunday afternoon. Use that sunscreen, that Georgia sun will take the hide off an alligator even if it's cloudy. Kast year it took 2 weeks for the tops of my ears to grow back. ffcheesy
Last year at the PrOject, I noticed your red ears Tom.
I thought it was just from all the banter between you and Howard.
.
It snowed a fair bit this morning up here in Manitoba.
No problem at all – I haven't seen any mosquitoes yet.
Ya know Andries you COULD have said something. I had no idea there was an issue until a day or so later and by then pieces of skin were falling off. That hadn't happened since my interior firefighting days.
Ah well, instead of being annoying, it just gave me a warm fuzzy reminder of time well spent.
We've had some skeeters here, but they are slow and seem groggy, ffcheesy Easy to grab out of the air and not very many, they just got ahead of the crowd a bit too soon. Our snow is done, except maybe up on the mountains here and there, but today was snotty and unpleasant with drizzly rain all day totaling only about 0.20". A good day for shop work.
Mosquiotos and no see ums out, no black flies yet oddly they usually come out before mosquitoes
I saw mosquitoes here around the shop, was 60°F. smiley_thumbsdown
Heat wave at almost 40 this morning. ffcheesy
Same here and looks like rain coming. smiley_thumbsdown
Was 36°F this morning and 60° this afternoon. Showers tonight and tomorrow morning I think. Good drying wind here this afternoon, was dead calm this morning. Bright sun all day. Hopefully it won't be too wet and windy Saturday, I want to change oil in the buggy and lawn mower. They are mowing the local gulf course here already.
No rain or snow all week !!!
Some rain coming in early morning, maybe 5am until 10am. Only 5 hours of rain. Then showers. then sun at 3!!!!
That wind is busy right now.
Had no rain here yet, not suppose to amount to more than a shower. Next rain is Wednesday into Thursday, with snow mixed in Thursday. smiley_thumbsdown
44°F this morning and dry so far.
I saw rain last night, but it's showers now. Steps are wet, but no showers at this moment.
Only had a trace of water here today, can't even measure it in the gauge. Starting to clear in the west. Breezy. 44°F here all day.
Had some turkeys across the road. Only other birds I saw was the bluebirds around the boxes. Never even saw a robin, a blue jay, or a crow.
Sun came our around 2 today and still out!!!!
31* and frosty. Stellar days on tap . Lots of outside work to
get caught up on. Hearing Hermit Thrushes in the woods, the flutists .
32 here, the cold better stop, the tree buds are coming out.
One year we lost a lot of Apples from the frost.
34°F this morning. Calling for an arctic cold front tonight, down into the 20's, 40's tomorrow for high. Then warm back into the 50's Tuesday. A little bit of flushing showing up, but very hesitant. Awfully early for most stuff, and it has not been very warm. Maybe 3 days of 60°F all month.
Been in the low 80s for the last st week and a half. Upper 70s for this week and lower on the weekend. Friday light snowfall up the hill.
Been kinda cool here too.
Well I say that. but seem like the past few years it will be in the 70's for a couple weeks, then we get a killing frost that sets everything back.
It could still do that too.
Looking at the 10 day temps, one day might get up to 60.
34° and looks like full sun all day!!!!!
50 for a high today.
Only got to 38F here, sunny and cold wind. Going down into the 20's tonight. When that wind started a big cloud came over with it and let loose some mealy snow. Didn't amount to anything. Cleared away.
About 60°F expected for Tuesday.
Cold NW wind today ,wool hat , gloves and winter coat day.
Tomorrow looks better for warmer.
Ground Still too wet for skidding logs, AG tires leaving imprint everywhere. Can wait.
woodroe, I know. I'm not use to this cold weather either!!!! :wacky:
Had white caps on Norcross Pond.
Just so others know, that is a small pond.
Wind is blowind and good for drying wood. ffcool
I had 30 this morning.
Was a very nice Autumn day here.Temp maybe 10-18C over the day. And one of those clear sky Autumn days. No snow on the Mt currently.
Was 25°F on the porch early this morning. 60°F here now. Windy out of the SW.
Going to rain some Wednesday and turn to snow in the night. Going to be 44°F Wednesday for the high and down in the 20's by Thursday morning. Clearing Thursday by noon and about 40°.
Fields around here have dried out. Should be planting wheat and barley soon.
Whitecaps on the local 200 acre pond this afternoon.
Wind Opposite direction from yesterday.
Could be some snow in the air tonight/tomorrow.
woodroe, snow? You must be up North somewheres.
The 200 acre gave it away too. :wacky:
34° this morning with a high of 50.
Looks like another day of just about enough rain to keep it wet all day.
I got 3 days with no rain, ffcheesy
I think I had 3 days too. Maybe 4.
I bet it set a record since last year. :wacky:
cold wet and a threatening snow. not a nice morning
Dry all day until now. The rain has just began. Might see snow overnight to. I don't think there will be much to it though. 34°F this morning, now 42°F on the porch. Was cool and no wind much. Actually had some sun all morning.
Looked into an old field this morning near work and 4 Tom's with their tail feathers up. Never seen any hens.
Been seeing a couple moose, sometimes just one of them.
***Snowed in Montreal all day. *** :D :D
Not much "rain" at all today. maybe 2 hours, did not have to run the wipers much on the car.
Wind is blowing, moon is bright and it's kinda cold out there.
Good thing it's not raining, or it would be snow. :wacky:
Yeah, the rain here didn't amount to beans. Then windy and cleared out before midnight. Be another dry sunny day in the bushes.
Thecfarm How far is Norridgewock from you?
Maybe a half hour.
I have 24° here.
Thanks. 24 here too and I think the sun will shine here today. ffcool
28 here and no rain. ffcool
Same here Peter and full sun again today!!!!
Had 50° F here and sunny all day.
I woke up the pheobes under the porch this morning with the outside light on. They were flitting around like bats at me, only with a chirp. It was high alert. Need a racket for badminton with a real birdie. ffcheesy ffcheesy
I think they are trying to build a nest on top of the light for the OWB. Kinda hard, it's curved on top. I keep finding material on top of the door. There's more on the door then the light. :wacky:
They're a busy bunch, that's for sure. ffcheesy
Getting dry here like last spring, burn bans on, no rain in sight and sunny every day. Went trout fishing up the Clyde river today, was a nice day, we went to a few spots, one of which on our way out noticed a out of control fire that had been maliciously set within the past hour, and was growing out of control fast.
Not too long ago the fire depart guys stopped in to notify it had been put out, had we not caught it that quick would have gotten out of hand quickly!
Sorry not sorry to the arsonist that wanted to see "his work" in the news!
Yeah, dries out fast on these farmed ridges up here. But it's not that dry in the woods, I see water pools still around for the froggies. The forest roads here are still on the wet side. Where I am working I'm on an old road that is wet and one could easily get stuck if you went too far to the side. ffcheesy ffcheesy Not much for water forecast this week. Just a couple of days ago the forecast was rain and showers for Tuesday to Saturday. Now just partial sunshine. That's fine, I'm going to be putting plywood on the shop ceiling this week. I cut those 8 footers in two to get them up there. One could do it easier with todays gadgetry, but by the time you hunt one down for a small job like this 20x24 ceiling, the job would be done and no extra money spent on convenience. Going to use a T shaped helping hands out of 2x4". Tough and stubbornness. smiley_smug01
28°F this morning and sunny.
30 here with the sun ffcool
Looks like only 3 days in the next 10 days will be below 60. Warming up.
Nothing below freezing either, most mornings are just about 40 or above for the next 10 days.
Another sunny day here!!!
Twas a bit crummy around here yesterday. Middle son teaches flying lessons out of the east side of (Epply), the Omaha airport that was hit by a tornado the yesterday, the school lost at least 1 plane. He thought for a while that it got his office but it's ok.
Sunny and 67°F here today. ffsmiley
Pretty nice day sunny and around 10c, zombie black flies out another week or so they will be biting
Deer ticks are out as well
yup, blackflies are out but not biting yet. Won't be long though.
Some stellar weather on tap, things drying out enough to start skidding
some winter blowdowns out of the woods.
Deer Ticks been baaaaaad. Been picking them off fido for weeks. Many bloated.
Dog ticks are coming on now, sheesh.
Any time the dog gets walked he comes back with ticks.
The outside air has been so dry here, it could choke a horse. I leave the window up and it's like dry air off a wood stove. :sunny:
Sun was out early this morning.
Gone for the day now.
Looks like a couple hours of rain then showers.
60's or almost 60 for the week.
Was overcast here this morning, now clearing out. But says showers today. Never know. Going to be 60's, SW wind. Was 42° early. Dry as a popcorn fart.
Big old red tailed hawk soring over the house a moment ago. ffsmiley
I see the red fox coming back home to the back yard. Probably den and pups in an old ground hog hole. Been no sign of any ground hogs around. :D
And a couple Tom's with some hens out in the field awhile ago. :)
They said rain by 9 this morning and they was right.
I got a little wet picking up branches. But inside with a little white dog on my lap.
Should only be about 3 hours of rain and then showers.
Could be wet all day.
Nothing at all here except sunshine and now in red zone burn restrictions
Had a couple evening showers you couldn't measure. Farmers were on the land yesterday spreading fertilizer. I think they were all last week around here. There are companies that do the spreading.
42°F this morning, windy, clouds so far.
Neighbor said it was 70° on two of his thermometers. It wasn't, it was 55°, but not worth arguing about. You don't go to your neighbors to make arguments, you just nod or grunt. Or better yet, don't go. ffcheesy
I have 45 this morning.
45 here too, rain on and off the last 2 days. So sick of the rain.
We have a line of thunderstorms approaching this morning that caused me to postpone today's sawing until tomorrow. Not complaining because we need the moisture.
Close to 70 here today. Pretty sweet with the sun out full time.
Keep your mouth closed when working though, you might inhale
a blackfly. ffcheesy
Windy out of the NE, cloudy and barely 50° for a high. Checked the gauge from yesterday evening, was actually 1/4" of rain. Won't expect any black flies around here until I see leaves the size of squirrel ears. At least 2 weeks away.
Hot here 87F
Today was a milestone day I always note in my little head. For the first time this year I didn't have to start even a morning fire in the shop and worked out there all day. I didn't even put a jacket on in the morning. The weather stations said it hit the mod 70's today, but with the wind it didn't feel all that warm. at all. No rain, but it felt like it was coming a few times. I am sure I will still have a few fires, but it was nice to have a wood free day, I am pretty much tapped out.
We don't get black flies in southern WI, thankfully. But up 'nort, can find them out at times.
Black flies usually appear the same time I want to work garden ground up. I often wear a bug net. Then not long and they are gone. The worst places for them up here are around bogs and black spruce country. None to speak of around these parts by the end of June. We have lots of deer flies and horse flies, they were terrible last summer, worst I've seen. Mosquitoes here at night and early morning in the yard all summer. And last year was a first for no-see-ums, it rained so much they flourished and even came through the porch screens in clouds. Couldn't have my morning porch coffee on rainy mornings. None during day time, just dark. Burn'n and itching. ffcheesy
34°F this morning and clear skies. :sunny:
Looks like the next 6 days I won't see the stars. smiley_thumbsdown
Clouds until next Monday.
I am at 42° this morning.
As woodroe said, close to 70 here yesterday.
Seem to be warming up slow this year.
The past few years, it gets up into the 70's for 2-3 weeks and then we get a killing frost and sets everything back.
Fiery pink sky looking east this fine morning.
Finally got some blowdowns twitched out Sunday.
Ground drying out nicely.
Yes it is!!!!
Just got back with a load of 1/2" plywood from Homedepot.ca at the city. $10 less a sheet than local. Have saved $300 when gas is taken off.
Sun held all day. Got to 58°F here. Looks like same for tomorrow.
44 here raining all day smiley_thumbsdown
42F this morning, looks like a decent day on tap. ffsmiley
No sun today smiley_thumbsdown
We might see the sun at 3:00.
I've had 2 days in a row I did not start a morning fire in the shop and it stayed in the mid 60's or higher all day. Yesterday evening we got about 1/3" of rain and this morning it is uncommonly foggy. Visibility is about 1/4 mile at best. 56° outside, 61 in the shop, but I think I may do a smudge fire just to dry out the air. I am applying finishes today. No fire yesterday and first cost took way to long to dry.
Supposed to hit 70 today but not expecting to see any sun.
We had no sun overnight, but should have some today! ffsmiley ffsmiley ffsmiley
Was sunshine all day here, and a high of 62°F. Going to be some clouds mixed in tomorrow and next 3 or 4 days, but still 60°F for highs.
8 forest fires reported active and one out of control near Edmundston. Been 118 fires so far. 310 acres burned.
40°F this morning on the porch, stars shining. I smell Mr Skunk has been around. ffcheesy
Well, only took a couple of hours for the clouds to roll in out of the west. I think cloudy rest of the week and mainly dry, showers maybe Sunday.
Sun did come out late afternoon.
Then when I was eating supper, the clouds came in.
44° and a light rain is coming and then showers.
Sounds like another day of just about enough rain to keep it wet all day.
45 here and more Rain rain, rain Hard to get things done. smiley_thumbsdown
Rained in here too today.
Next couple days look good though
Was dry here all day, had some sunny breaks. Heavier clouds now. Got to 62F here.
Rain please
Not again...
First tastes of summer...over 70 yesterday, today and tomorrow. We can finally get the tomato, chilli, eggplant and cucumber plants out of the house.
I will plant onion sets next weekend here. Nothing else goes out until the 15th of June here.
42°F this morning and cloudy. No rain expected. About 60° expected for the high.
Had quite a bit of sun yesterday by noon. Was in the 60's here. Man it's dry, the grass ain't even growing. It came enough to be green and hasn't grown much since. Not that I want to mow lawns yet. ffcheesy This ridge dries up fast. Neighbor up the road complaining his yard is too wet for his tractor to drag anything substantial behind it, just sits and spins. Tires ain't that great either he said. Plus his place is all hillside. He's also near a creak, so probably some clay. He wouldn't spin on my ground, hard as cement.
43°F this morning and clouds. I feel every joint this morning after a week of putting up plywood in the shop. Don't pay me by the hr, I'm expensive and not too swift on the end of a screw driver. ffcheesy ffcheesy But surprised how long a Dewalt 20V battery holds up, did 95% on one 4 Ah battery. ffcool Glad that part is behind me. ffcheesy ffcheesy
Been no rain here for 3 weeks other than a 1/4" one evening. Dust is just a flying behind farm equipment. This happens every spring. June will be wet and on the cool side until about the 15th. I was really surprised that grain wasn't going in 2 weeks ago, my dad would have 200 acres planted by now.
48 no sun and rain Sunday
Light rain right now in the valley and dry up the hill. Supposed to get an inch or so today and 5-10" of snow up at my property. 🫤 So much for hauling my gear up the hill on Monday!
Annnnnd still no rain 👍
Raining hard now down here and wet snow dumping up the hill. Temps are dropping and snow elevation, too.
It was cold and overcast, almost raining when I got off at 7 this am. spoke to a doc in the parking lot and was shivering on my way to the car.
42°F with fog this morning. Still dry, but now at least the air has some moisture in it. ffsmiley
Looked like my neighbor had some hilled rows for potatoes or something. Looked like fine sand, so dry. Hasn't been all that hot yet and nothing different for the next week, perhaps a few days of cooler if anything. No flies biting yet, have seen some mosquitoes around the shop.
WhitePineJunky, All the rain I get has missed you?
That's too bad.
Looks like a light rain is moving in around 2 today.
I have 46 and no sun. Looks like a cool day, maybe 54 today.
I have something chewing on me a little bit. Should not be much chewing today. :wacky:
I shot a wood chuck between the rock yesterday. That rayrock in the garden is good for something. I shot at least one year in that rock. It has a crack about foot wide.
Inspecting the black elderberry bushes this morning I spotted a bunch of old dead leaves on something. I found a couple dozen red oak seedlings where the grey squirrel buried them 2 falls ago. Pulled them out easily as they were in mostly mulch. Made a row of red oak seedlings along the property line, and flagged them. Some showers tomorrow morning will water them in. ffwave
Rain coming down well now. I'm out working on the HOTROD ffcheesy
Oh yea, a light rain again.
I sawed up some branches that fell out of the tree and hauled them to the OWB. Got a little wet, but will look a lot better coming up the driveway now.
Farmer been working up ground around the house here all afternoon, probably getting ready to plant grain. Dust is a flying. Sun has been in and out and a south wind.
62°F here this afternoon.
47 and cloudy, sun on Tuesday then rain for 3 days. smiley_thumbsdown
We need the rain so whatever time I have to quit sawing is good with me.
66F here this afternoon. We had 1/4" rain overnight. Going to clear tonight and be a nice couple days then showers possible for 2 or 3 days, but doesn't look like any significant rain. Never know. Could use some here, but out at work it's never been all that dry. The road this morning was snot where they graded. Red clay road, the worst kind of road. :D
Warm enough for the blackflies wanting to bite today.
Had to break out the Bens spray .That was the end of them ffcheesy
I was working today, so did not get to enjoy the black flies. :wacky:
Full sun all day!!!! I better enjoy it. The next 7 days don't look good for the sun.
It might of got to 70 yesterday.
Sun came out around 1 and it warmed up.
I have 45° now and fog in the field and fog down by the brook and the sun is coming up!!! Looks good out there!!!!
Ayuh. Grass is green, trees leafing out. Trout must be biting.
Good woodshed building weather. Got a 6' x 16' going up. Shed roof style.
Hemlock of course, green hemlock. Heavy.
Winter is getting closer. Dusting of snow up on the Mt today.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10460/20240507_104809s.jpg) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353697)
60°F here for the high. A little breezy this afternoon. No black flies here yet. Looks like cooler weekend, 40's and 50's.
Was a beautiful day today!!!!
Full sun all day!!!
Wind was kinda busy, but still a nice day.
I've noticed the leaves too. Won't be long and I won't be able to see through the woods.
Mowed the lawn for the first time.
The fields are really green now.
I had the heat off yesterday. First time this year.
It's back on at 45°. Might get up to 55 today.
Sun is out, but not for long.
Was dry here all day at work, but some rain started here at 5:00 pm. I think it got to 60°F around noon. 55° now. I see some 70's at the end of next week around Thursday and Friday. Black flies will be chewing by Monday I bet. smiley_thumbsdown
I'll probably be mowing soon here, I know some neighbors have mowed this week.
Kinda on the cool side, the wet weather is not helping the cool feeling. Looks to be 7 days with not much sun.
Oklahoma has been sending us their violent storms about everyday. This evening it was a thunderstorm with torrential rain and brilliant sunshine at the same time. Hank the dog and I knew their would be a rainbow someplace so we went out to find it. We found it after about 15 minutes but it was ho-hum. The next thing was these angry looking clouds.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10125/DSC_9147.JPG) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353717)
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10125/DSC_9154.JPG) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353716)
Temps just about the same as yesterday. I have 45° and a high of 55.
But today should be dry!!!!!
Not much sun. maybe some at 5 tonight.
Well no rain anyways.
Had a hard shower at about 6 last night and then some light rain after that.
There was a tornado watch untill midnight. I fell asleep about 10:30.
It must have been REALLY windy, I woke up to this
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/65100/IMG_6593.JPG) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353734)
It will be interesting to see what I find when i walk the dogs later, the storms are still rolling through
Larry, those look like Q-tip clouds! :wacky:
TV news said 89,000 without power in NC due to storms last night.
We never lost power.
But we did have some strong storms pass by.
Jim Rogers
Four feet of water did this to office.
https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353736 (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353736)
Ouch. That sucks.
I'm Praying for you Tex
Showers here, sun once in awhile, barely 50°F today.
38° F this morning and clear as a bell out there. :sunny: Some lower spots have frost this morning. It's 29° F in Presque Isle, Maine this morning.
I have 36° and fog. Can't even see the field across the road.
Looks like 60 and mostly cloudy today.
I have mud, again. again. again. again. smiley_thumbsdown
On my way to work and the sun is out bright!!!!
Not gonna see any sun here today. It took all last evening for the dew point and the air temp to coincide and allow rain, which started just after midnight. We are now well over 1/2" of rain and a lot more coming through the day. Glad I got the grass cut yesterday, this rain would have forced me to get a brush hog or sickle mower to cut it. ffcheesy
TV news said still 14,000 + without power in NC. Lot more without power in other states as well. FL had the most without.
70° here this morning heading to 92°
Widened out the garden some to give more room to the tomatoes and peppers. Ground is a little packy this morning from the little bit of rain we got.
Northern lights last night here.
36°F this morning and another decent dry day to start anyway. Got to work up some garden and put the onions in. ffsmiley The black flies will likely be out chewing by mid morning. Might see 60° today. Yesterday was 55°F.
Sun 2 days in a row. The mud is drying up. ffcool
Mostly cloudy here all day, but it will be a dry day!!!
56° for a high.
Greenhouse is getting there.
Rhubarb close to ready for Jam and Pie.
Missed the light show last night, tired. zzzz_smiley Maybe tonight.
Still burning wood with close to freezing mornings .
I've got one old crown of Rhubarb you could pick now. The one beside it seems to be slow this spring, usually just as big. Both had stalks the size of your wrist last spring. They were huge. Maybe no snow cover affected the other one? Usually a big drift across the garden, but recently the breeze way has closed up with birch trees. I suspect some stuff will have less fruit this year, the raspberries and grapes were heavy with fruit last year. I have enough jam for 2 more years. I eat it every day to. ffcheesy
No fire yesterday morning, but afternoon sun and open windows cooled it off a little, so made an evening smudge. I leave my bedroom window open from April onward until we get that heat and high humidity days. Late evening or a nice summer cold front and up she goes again. ffwave Could see some rain mid week, but so far their rain forecasts have turned into dry popcorn. ffcheesy
Fiddle heads here are gone by now, 2 foot tall fronds now. And I never saw any last week up at a couple patches I have. Mom bought some from a neighbor, ate some, froze some, gave some away to a couple senior friends.
36°F and sunny.
46° here and solid overcast with light rain plodding through until at least noon. Another grey day. We had sun yesterday morning up until around 2pm then it clouded over until we were socked in by 7pm. No light show here again.
I have 44° and another cloudy day. No sun today.
I have only turned the heat off, I think, once so far.
