Howard I am having a hard time believing that a guy as savvy and experienced as you got whooped by a log that was only 25 inches long. There has to be more to this story.

Howard,
I thought you had a log arch?  Do Y'all ever hook the loader bucket to the log and lift the end of the log off of the ground and back up?

If Howards place is anything like mine you're lucky if you can walk up the hillside to hook a cable to most logs lots less drive a tractor up to them and a larger tractor won't fit on narrow benches.

I just wore the jeans that were under the my bibs, it was the front side that was  trashed. I have driven home on backroads in my boxers before, having used the backup clothes I carry previously.  That's fine after dark but I did meet the guy driving the grader for the township one day about noon....! :Wow:

wudshp

I had a late night or early morning call and ended up trashing my coveralls grabbed the spare set from behind the seat to get home.  Early morning calving call and I fell out of bed without thinking about replacing clothes in the truck.  Long dead calf huge mess came out in parts which required a milk house shower after.  Walked to truck for clothes behind seat, oops.  Only a pair of white long johns with about 20 holes in them.  Oh well I can stop home before the next call.  Driving down the road and left the porta vet latch undone and it pops open.  Pull over and hop out in tall rubber boots and mangy long underwear, no shirt.  Its about 5 below and windy.  Latching box and a car comes over the hill.  A bunch of older ladies that I know.  They slow down and all three heads turn and stare as they go by at about 5 miles an hour.  Mouths hanging open. One of them still reminds me when I see her and that was the mid 90s. Thanks for the reminder Nebraska. :)

Okay - I quit! The log won. smiley_thumbsdown

Tom,

May a swarm of fruit flies invade your shop every time you mix a batch of epoxy!

Tim,

Yes I have a log arch but I have not used it in so long the battery is dead. I used it with my ATV before I got the tractor. it would not think of lifting a log this big and I could never get it up that slope anyway. There is easily over 800 bf of lumber in this log.

Bill,

Yes, this is a typical WV slope. I had to climb up on all 4's to get the cable on it to start with then when it slid to the bench and dug in my problems started.

I went back today and dug under the log to get the cable under it, trimmed the front and Bibbyed the flare off the back. I pulled it about 10' but then when all weight was on the bench it was just too heavy to pull with my little JD 750. I bent my drawbar, pulled the cable clamps free out of the loop on the end of my long cable and straightened the hook on my short tow cable. I'll leave the log where it lays till I know what size lumber I need and buck it to length and drag it down in shorter lengths later.

The day was not a total waste though. I can hammer the drawbar straight and re-bend the hook and while looking through for some hinges for a bin to keep the trash in for pick up I found 2 more big hinges so at least I can build and hang the last door on my shed next week.

Gee Howard, are we a bit testy today? Do you need a hug?
Sorry about your issues with 'the log'. Wish I were closer so I could lend a hand, I love a challenge! I had a log similar to this once trying to pull it out with my Mule. It was long time down, partly rotted into the ground. A big red oak, about 28". I cut two 12' logs out of it and quickly gave up hooking up the arch to lift and pull it uphill. So I turned the mule around, put a choker on the log and used the winch to try to get it out of it's rut. That just dragged the mule down hill. SO then I chained the back of the Mule to a tree to hold it in place and winched it while also putting the mule in reverse and trying to jerk it loose. That worked enough to move it a little and after 6 tries, I managed to get it out enough to re-rig. I put the arch back on it, backed the Mule up to it and lifted it a little, then hooked the winch to a tree to pull the Mule, arch and Log up, while I tried to drive it. It was touch and go, but I finally got it moving and eventually onto the road. I figured that log at 2,500#. I got several bars and table tops out of it as well as that chair I made. Took me about 2 hours to do what would normally be a 10 minute hook and skid with a normal 18" log.
So I am not laughing at you, I am laughing with you. Been there done that.
I am very anxious to see your shed completed with doors all across, that will be a milestone and a long ay from when you just wanted some racks in the right hand bay. Please do hurry on that, won't you? ;)

Yeah, this was a case of just knowing when to quit. I just don't have the equipment to move a log that big in one piece. I'll have to cut it into 2-3 logs anyway so its better to just leave it till needed.

Tim,

When people ask me how much land I have I tell them I have 41 acres but if I could lay it flat I'd have over 80 acres. smiley_smug01

Big Dummy.  ffcheesy   I haven't stuck mine since Wednesday sawing that 36" Pecan butt from the stump.  I had it wedged but when it dropped to the ground it stuck my bar.  I removed the power head before I hooked the  Magic Hook and truck to roll it.

Maybe removing the power head was not necessary, but it made me feel better.  I didn't need a squished MS392.

Ounce of prevention.  Sometimes I will use a grapple to hold the log steady.  Other times I will top cut a bit and then under cut it until it sags, then top cut again at an angle to get to the remaining part that hasn't been cut.  Gets messy sometimes.

Early on all I had for skidding was a 72 Power wagon that had hoedad blades welded over the frame tears ...  and there was this really nice 16' white pine log. I got changing U joints down to about 10 minutes but finally threw in the towel and made 2 8's. I was tidying up in the shop yesterday and came across a stack of U joint boxes ready to go  ffcheesy.
