I used to have a home built tractor winch that came off a dozer. Plugged into aux. Gpm's on tractor were slow. Worked ok. I assume I would get more performance with a bobcat with higher gpm? I'd like build my own and want to know what to look for. Not gonna be for pulling a big hitch, just hung up trees, and hard to get stuff till I can grab hold with the bobcat. I see they make new hydraulic winches for autos, assume they run off power steering? Would this be a viable route too?
I use a $300 chinese 12vdc electric winch on a reciever hitch plate for use on aything i weld a reciever to. Its got a short lead with an anderson connector for the things ive hardwired, and i made a long jumper for everything else. All my trailers and a few of my attachments have receivers and everything obviously has one or more 12v batteries. I use arc welding cables from the scrap yard to make up power wires. The ring terminals are just pieces of soft copper tubing, hammer smashed and soldered on with a hole drilled in the tab. Pretty much all my batteries are group 31 semi tractor batts with stud tops now. No more lead clamp headaches.
I had a mile marker hydraulic winch like you mentioned that was meant to run off a power steering pump and powered it off my dozers hydraulics and it worked good for pulling wood and what not. My only complaint was it was slow, would pull a house but takes all day to do it.
A light/ medium hydraulic wrecker truck winch. Probably find lower cost one if a wrecker has been in a wreck itself.

(warn, mile marker - how many other brands ? most have good and not so good models)
20 feet of remote cable on some if you need a bit of stand back space.
Mounting position &machine positioning fairly important to give a good pull.
Should also see if there are any skid steer winch units around (clutch units etc)- used to compare cost wise/ time saving vs building your own.
