Just bought an old 041AV.  It runs well and seems to have good power.  The hand guard flops around and there is no evidence of a chain brake ever having been installed, but there is a slot in the cover where the link would have gone through.  Were some of these saws made without the brake?  Is it worth trying to find one to install on it?

I saw a lot of them but never with a chain brake. Apparently later models were equipped, looks like it would be just a matter of finding a hand guard and sprocket cover.

One of mine has a brake and safety clutch, which declutches the drum when the brake is activated. Works fine, but is immensely complicated. (The same type clutch as on the 031)
The clutch also makes it possible to start and rev the engine, without the chain running.

I have only been around one 041AV that I bought used it did have a chain brake. I gifted to a buddy 10 years ago when he bought a acreage. He is still using it today. I never looked up the serial number to see when it was built.

That is interesting, I would like to see how it works but sounds like potential problems.

Will pour a few drops on fuel into my saw and shoot a video, when the weather is for it. Soon.

Ok, dragged out the 041, it won't start, even after quite a bit of tinkering, so found the 031, which has the same type of clutch and brake.
It runs, but no charge on my camera! Video will come soon, but till then a link for an ipl for the 041 here:

The safety clutch and brake is on page 40 - 41
And I see that it was sold with a "normal" brake too.
