maple die off?

Curious what you folks think is causing lots of hard and soft maple to die here in the UP.  Little moss balls form on the branches, then the bark falls off.  Soon the whole top is naked, then the tree is dead.  This whole process seems to take a few years.  I heard there was a study done at MTU but don't know the results.
