Jokers,
All depends on the operator and the chain you have on the saw! ;D

Well I can unequivocally say that I can`t build a race chain because I have never tried, but I`ll run my round filed work chain against yours. 8)

Logger,

I think we can all appreciate your happiness with your saw and Stihl, they are great saws....

But I stick to my guns as well and they are painted Husqvarna Orange!

Like Jokers I have owned and run the Stihl 044 and a Husky 372. I would take the Husky for one reason..........ANTIVIBE!!! The Husky has it all over Stihl in this dept.!!!

Jokers,
I was just saying that if you have a square cornered tooth chain on your saw it will perform better , I don't know if you had a husky that had a square cornered tooth on and a round cornered tooth on the stihl.  I just don't know.  My stihl will run right with a husky.  And I didn't say that I have a race chain on my saw.  We all have our differences! ;) ;D 8)

Gotcha Logger.

I like the 44 but prefer the 372 because of slightly better antivibe, in fact you won`t believe it unless you try it, and the Air Injection keeps the filter clean longer. Either saw is a great saw.

Jokers,
You are correct about the anti vibe and air injection.  They are nice features.  I would not compare the 044 to the 440.  They are different saws and perform differently.  I see the 372 is being discontinued.

I may be wrong about this, but I always have the feeling you see many more old Stihl's around than Husky and that a used Stihl seems to fetch more money than any other brand of saw equally used, from any dealer of any brand.

But that may just be in my old brain.

Hi OWW,

How is the 440 different from the 044 other than the decomp? I run so many different saws that I lose track but I don`t think I`ve run a 440.

Lobo,

I think that the primary reason that you see so many old Stihls around is because Stihl has sold so many saws. It`s the same as the number of old Chevys you may see vs the number of old Hondas. Not to say that the good Stihls are anything less than excellent products, but Stihl does a superb job of marketing. Stihl is nearly synonymous with chainsaw in most North American homes and therefore brand recognition bolsters their resale value.

Hi Russ,

I need to correct you here.
Nowadays there quite possibly are more old Honda's than Chevy's, the big 3 have taken one heck of a stomping for many years now in the passenger vehicle lines, except of course in the pick-up & SUV end of it.   smile_belly_laugh smile_belly_laugh

We have used both 372 and 044.  The 044 blew up, but all the 372's are running.   Since I have the hired help at the mill using my older saws, I never know what catastrophic things they try to do with my saws, so the 044 failure may have nothing to do with anything.

Hi OWW,

I was wondering the same thing.  Are you referring to the uprating of the hp in 2000 with the widened ports?

My understanding, which is subject to disclaimers, is that both horsepower and revs were increased.  My 440, without a decomp valve, is supposed to rev at 13,500 full open.  I had some difficulty getting it down to that.  I thought the 044 high end was 12,500.

My 044 service manual states that 14000 rpm is the max speed with a Rollomatic bar installled.   There was indeed an uppage in hp, which happened in 2000 as they where still the 044 and 046.  They're serial number determined.  After said S/N, those saws will have the uprated hp.  All 440's and 460's have the higher hp and better efficiency, and the "MS" change came along when, 2001?  So the 044/440 name change would be a good line to determine those saws with higher hp at a glance, and not having to cross referrence serial numbers.  I've got the 044/046 S/N's should anyone be interested in knowing what you've got.

Take care all,
Jeff

My dealer says that is just a refrence in the book.  It says 13,500 rpm, but as jeff said they will run 14,000 rpm easy!  My Stihl MS440 Magnum is running 13,800rpm right now.  My dealer said he didn't want to open it up all the way because it is still a little tight yet.  I've run 4 gal of gas through it.  He said to run about 2 more gal of gas through it.  And he will turn it to 14,000 rpm.
