My next build is in process.  This is for the same people that I built a library for last year.  This is bookcases above, a small desk space in the middle and drawers and doors on the bottom.  It's about 10' wide.  I've never bought 10' long plywood before, but I needed a single piece to be the desk top.

This will be painted white just like the last one.

You did a fine job on that last one.

Building faceframes for cabinets today.  I was cutting some very nice rainbow poplar for this project that is to be painted.  It pained me a little, but I'll get over it.

"They" paint everything now days... :D

Couldn't you have placed the plywood joint (scarf or butt?) under an upright to hide it on the face and avoided 10'? It's getting painted anyway...

The bottom 30" is 18" deep with a desk area in the middle and cabinets on either side with drawers and doors.  There would still have been 6" of a joint exposed and those joints would have been visible to the person using the desk.

Built drawers today and put front and back edging on adjustable shelves.  The shelves are 35" wide so they have to have solid front and back edging to make them stiffer.  The drawers I made using lock rabbet joints.  I've made them before, but this was the first time using the dado blade on tablesaw to make the joints.  It's much quicker than using the router table.  Drawer bottoms are just 1/4 ply.

I really like that joint! I have never been able to make drawers worth a dang but those dado blades work really well and I have several sets I use on the RAS, I have made throat plate blanks but never put the slot in. I gotta get back on that at some point.
 You make nice stuff man.

OG, the lock rabbet is an easy way to make good drawers.  Theres a lot of glue surface.  With the dado blade, you set up the blade to be exactly half the thickness of the drawer stock and set it that same exact dimension above the table.  For one half of the joint you set the fence that dimension away from the fence.  For the other half of the joint you need a sacrificial fence so that you can slide the fence right up to the blade.  Thanks for the compliment.

I've finally about got these done.  The desk top is about 10' long and painted really well.  I will finish painting tomorrow and then install on Thursday after my 72 hour shift.  I used to be able to get this stuff done much quicker.  I'm behind on projects.  I need to make a dog kennel/fish tank stand next.  Then I have 2 live edge walnut tables to make.

Nice work, nice and solid looking. Was the solid wood maple or birch?  :)

Man you do nice work! And pretty dang fast too from what I can see! With a resource like you around, I don't know why anybody would go to a furniture store.

Thanks @SwampDonkey I use yellow poplar for my frames and other parts that are not plywood.

Thanks @Old Greenhorn probably because there is an Ikea in St Louis.

Very nice work!

What do you use to paint your projects and do you use similar for spraying stains and finishes?

Thanks for sharing!

firefighter ontheside

We actually don't have yellow poplar in this area, but I can get it for a pretty good price.  I buy it at 13/16 and plane it to 3/4.  I've yet to use any of my own lumber for this purpose.  I need to start milling some sycamore or other soft maple to use.

I use Target Coatings water based tinted laquer.  I thin it 10% and spray it with my Earlex HVLP.  I use the same gun to spray finishes, but with a smaller needle.  I hate painting, but spraying the Target product makes it tolerable.

Interesting. It's probably a lot cheaper than maple or birch though. Clear maple or birch is pricy in these parts and I live where it is most of the hardwood forest. It's not rare, but big clear stuff is as it get's clear cut all the time. I did see a load of nice maple logs go down the road the other day, 16-24" stuff.

I think I've been paying 2.50 for the poplar.

I'm 99% done with painting.  REally just need to touch up a few places and some of that can be done while installing.  I mounted the drawers in the cabinets.  That went easier than anticipated.

I installed this mostly today.  I didnt finish for 2 reasons.  First I forgot to bring my air hose and therefore couldn't shoot the base trim on and some other trim pieces.  Second, I was going to re-use the crown mold that I took down, but it came off in 3 pieces, plus a short piece I brought with me was the wrong size crown.  So, I will be going back next week to finish up.  Also, they are going to  buy some knobs and I will install those when I go back.

Nice job and should last a long time

firefighter ontheside

Thanks @curved-wood .  I'm happy to have this project out of my shop and garage.  I finished it today.  Customers were happy.  I get to move on to a more traditional woodworking project with a walnut live edge table and trestle style legs.  I bought some 4x4 doug fir for legs today.  They will be painted white.

Yes, I think so too, but what I like most about it is that I do not have to do the painting.
