The walnut and cherry will really help in the long term to keep contrast in the floor.
Looking great!
Exactly.  The walnut may fade a bit, but the cherry will darken.

I finished installing the last of the flooring about 7 tonight.  There's still a lot of work to do with making and installing some transitions and then the finish.  I've got about 10 square feet of flooring left over.  It was about perfect.  I'll think of something to do with the left over.  My dad came and helped me today.  He had some trouble using the flooring nailer.  He said, " i just made a little error".  He had misplaced the nailer and shot a nail into the face of the flooring board.  I used a nail set and just set the nail.  A few minutes later I found a spot where he had shot 3 nails thru the face of a red elm board.  That did not set very well.  I fixed those holes with some epoxy.  I included a few close ups in case @WDH sees his favorite.

Ive never seen anyone use a ladder to install a floor before.  ;D :D
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

That floor looks sharp!  Really like how it came together.

Just some additional character and I bet no one will ever be able to pick those spots out but you once the floor is done. My father has been gone for ~14 years and I'd love to still have him around to shoot nails in the wrong spot for me...

Thanks guys.  Yeah, I was not angry.  The holes have been filled with some epoxy mixed with some red elm sawdust.  It will not be noticeable to anyone but me and it will make me think of my dad.

Some advice I was given that applies to pretty much all woodworking projects.

If someone compliments you on your job/project, resist the urge to point out all the errors, and just say "Thank you".

We tend to do that, point out all the flaws.  The average person won't notice them, so just let it go.  We tend to fixate on those small details, but given the scope of a project those flaws don't really matter.

Nice project by  the way.

also use the results to continue to improve.  often it may change the sequence of process, like initial sanding, routing corners, engraving, fine sanding, finish.  looks great.

He picked a good board to add some more Birdseye's to.

I hope the disks get there soon enough to do you some good.  Been running WFO seven days a week here.

You knew that I was going to pick the quartersawn white oak board with the sapwood on one edge and those upper medullary running across at 45 degrees, didn't you  ;D.

I like the elm too.  I've gained a new respect for how tough it is too.  If you look closely at that piece of elm you can see two grey spots.  Those were nails that were in that yard tree.

Very Nice! Great job.  I agree with never pointing out our mistakes. I also know no one will ever see what we see in our own work.

I think it is ok to learn from the mistakes and continue to improve.  Strive for excellence. once you are satisfied with a product or gift, then keep it to yourself.  lol

just got this pic, of my boss using a gift I made for him a few months back when he visited from California.  Charcuterie board.

Today I made and installed transitions in the doorways.  One was to go from carpet to wood and one from linoleum to wood.  Then I spent several hours sanding with 80 grit.  That was more work than I anticipated.  Tomorrow I will sand with 120, which shouldn;t take too long.  Then clean up the floor reall well before I put on first coat of finish.

Well, the floor is done.  I put the 4th coat of finish on this morning.  I still have some trim work to do in the room though.  I hope to move the furniture back in on Friday.  I'm not an expert with using the squeegee applicator for floor finish.  I ended up with a few smudge marks where I set the applicator down to pull it to me.  All in all the floor looks excellent I think.

OH MY! That is gorgeous! If that were mine I don't think I'd ant to put furniture in there, I'd just sleep on the floor and put a mirror on the ceiling.

Thanks guys.  Lol.  No mirrors on my ceiling!!
I will not be making flooring for a long, long time.  The rest of my 1700 sq ft house can keep the flooring it has.
