An old guy, who I never met, stopped by this afternoon.  He said he was a sawmiller, having ran a circular mill at a pallet mill all his life.  He Just wanted to stop by and check out one those new fangled bandsaw mills.   I have a feeling me and him will be doing some milling in the future.  I hope so, anyway.

How wonderful.  I'll bet there is some knowledge and special goodies tucked inside of his head.  Listen carefully.   :)

I can learn more from a retired sawyer in 20 minutes than I can taking a wood class for 10 hours. Good people to know!

I learned to saw grade on a hand-set circle mill from a guy close to eighty who was a saw doctor and sawer most of his life .
Was a great experience that has served me well for a good number of years . He was a little skinny old man about 5-7 and 120 lbs that would work a lot of much younger men into the ground lol .

He would saw with precision and get in a rhythm and the lumber would fly off that old,old mill . He had a huge air compressor and used an air-motor to drive his carriage and also run an overhead winch to turn those extra big logs.

I can still hear the strange zipping sound the escaping air made similar to a large impact wrench.

What a great contact and new friend.  Sounds like you will be learning a great deal and hope you can share some of those bits and pieces.
