General Board / sauna problems: flashing water...
Last post by mojo88 - Today at 04:46:36 AMHi. There are alot of problems with this sauna. The metal chimney around the flashing outside has gaps and lets rain water inside and has started rotting the wood inside the sauna room. The brick mortar next to the sauna and water heater is like sand in some places. It looks like its going to collapse some day soon without intervention.
Basically I was given the task to fix this with my own initiative and wallet without much experience with this yet.
I have removed the heat shielding on the ceiling just above the sauna because when I got here it was just barely hanging there by 2 rusty nails.
I use the sauna but first heat the water and then when its hot I heat the sauna. It creates some heat around the base of the chimney and is a bit worrying about potential fire hazard. There should probably be more fire heat resistant material around those rotten parts.
Any advice where to start before it gets worse..

Last post by KJ42 - Today at 02:59:18 AMWhats the new updated info on the EAB? My State Forester in PA told me they are just in limbo right now monitoring the EAB, whatever that means. I just treated a couple younger 6" dbh and smaller ashes with a root soak to see if I can save 1 or 2. I did find 2 Green Ashes down in my forest that have avoided the onslaught. One is 17"dbh, the other 7" dbh. Both have no signs of "D" holes and are currently fully leafing out. No signs of loose, girdling bark. I have to find an arborist to treat the big Ash ASAP. I was very surprised to find them as they are surrounded by infested, dead Ash. I wish I could find out if the EAB is still here or have they moved on?

Last post by Southside - Today at 12:28:59 AMThat was back in the late '90s, his hand was pretty messed up and his thumb was missing. End of his career. My employer at the time still had some old dynamite lying around and would use it to take out beaver dams. The Navy taught me a few things about explosives, but these guys missed the classes for sure. One day an "old timer" showed me how to remove a beaver dam and I recall commenting that we were using an awful lot of explosive for the job. My concerns were dismissed and he went to blowing the dam, and subsequently the two side by side train tankers that were re-purposed as culverts. Then there was the day I got called as the case of sticks stored in in the airplane hanger "didn't look right" -- well it was sweating and I know YH understands what that means when I say that. Nobody wanted to report it so I addressed the issue with about 10 gallons of diesel fuel and told the Sgt that I was going to do the same with the rest of what they had on hand as it was pretty clear that this practice needed to end. As far as I knew, that was the end of an era and the end of an error, how nobody died was a miracle.

He only lost his thumb? If he'd used a bigger charge, he may have been more careful with his fuse timing, but at least he survived.

Last post by WV Sawmiller - Yesterday at 10:00:01 PM I got everyone up around 6:30 this morning and my mom, daughter, 7 y/o GS and 6 y/o GD went to check and take up lines. Neither child had ever been catfishing so it was a new experience to them. My GS was the designated net operator. I'd pull the line and fish up until it was securely in the net and he'd pull it in. The fish started about 4-5 lbs then 8-9 lb then a 20 lb flathead that my GS told his mom "It is Ginormus!". We caught 9 that weighed 86 lbs. The top 4 weighed 56 lbs. I cleaned the 5 biggest flatheads and gave the last 6 to a neighbor who wanted them and agreed to clean them. It was a great day on the lake with Mom, daughter and 2 very excited and fun grandkids.
We had another live well full but not as packed as yesterday.

1) The wood was milled and has been drying nicely. Most of the boards are ~18% now so planning on hanging this summer.
2) I'm very close to buying a planer and planing them all based upon your feedback.
That said, I did a few test boards with oil based products and I didn't quite realize how long the curing and off-gasing would take. With the volume of siding I want to put up, and the fact that I'll be doing this "part time" I'm leaning heavily away from any method that would basically render the interior of the shop un-usable. Plus my wife is extra sensitive to that type of vapor, so I was curious if you all could help me decide:
A) I could just plane and hang naked. I suspect I could use a water based finish later.
B) Hang and use a water based product. From what I've read these all require multiple coats, but fast drying so theoretically I could do 2 of the coats in one day and hang the next.
Since I have a large volume I'm anxious about multi-stage logistics.
