2005 lt40 super gearbox

My buddy has the 2005 lt 40 super with 1000 plus hours. Going to change the lube in the up/down gear box to fresh 85/140 lube. Thinking it needs the full quart so the upper bearings can dip into the lube but I can't see a breather hole anywhere. My concern is that it will build internal pressure with that extra oil and push out thru seals. Is there a breather hole I can't see and how much oil would you put in?

On mine there is a plug at the bottom and one about half way up.  It is full when oil comes out of the one about half way up. If in doubt call Wood-Mizer.

Back on 7/16/10, I asked Wood-Mizer how much oil to put in the gearbox, because in the parts manual for my mill it says to drain the gearbox, then add 8 ounces and it really didn't seem like it would be enough to cover the gears!

Their reply was "Fill the gearbox"!

Exactly right.  If your bearings are open, they will never oil if the oil does not get to them.  Fill it up.

I replaced my bearings with sealed bearings many years ago.

Will it build up excess pressure inside if I add extra oil. I don't want to blow a seal. Thanks for all the info guys.

How will it build pressure?  That is a very slow moving shaft/gear as it raises and lowers.

You are correct MM. Going with 16 oz. of 85/140 oil. Mill only has 1000 plus hours, but it sat idle for 6 years. Change of fluids thru out before it goes to work.

This should have a breather for temp changes. Maybe small hole in fill plug?
