Woodmizer Lube Jug
« on: October 29, 2020, 03:16:00 PM »
I lost the cap to the air vent, and Woodmizer doesn't sell it separately.  I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to have lost one.  Does anyone know of a cap that will fit it?  Also, my mill is the kind that the jug is mounted at the top of the mast, rather than next to the engine.  Does anyone know of a graceful way to put the just filled jug back in place? I haven't figured one out yet.

Thats annoying for sure.

A 5/16" bolt will thread itself into that cap opening.  If it caps too well the jug will start to collapse, just back it out a bit.  After a while it leaks just enough where it doesnt matter.

I saw somewhere someone drilled a hole across the vent cap threads and then screwed a 5/16 wing nut in there.

Magicman has his lube-mizer rigged up to refill the water jug, and a pump to separately refill diesel tank without removing it.

I am finding that using the John Deere crop cleaner AN114022 as my lube additive I am using less and less water lube.  Last job sawed 2200 bf of spruce and pine with lubemizer on lowest setting and used only about 2 gal water/cleaner mix.

I made one from a couple of dowels, one to insert and the other (larger diameter) as a cap.  Glued them together and tethered it to the jug handle.

This is a kinda long topic and several options were tried before I came to the final decisions regarding refilling my fuel and lube jugs:  LINK

I will try the 5/16" bolt too as I have had a stick stuck in mine for 4 years or more.

I got lucky.. when I picked up my sharpener a few weeks ago I mentioned that i needed a cap...  my woodmizer rep said they don't just sell them like you mentioned... then walked over and took a cap off a jug for me!  I really like my local woodmizer dealer!!!!

I swear those vent caps are lost within 5 minutes!  That's what happened to my first one.  Then I bought a new jug about 4 months ago and that cap didn't stick around for long either.

Mine is also up high.  I use a 3ft step ladder.  I grab the handle and put my thumb over the vent hole and go up the ladder and put it in place.  It keeps the water (soapy water) from sloshing on you.  It's always precarious on the step ladder, but it's better than standing on the mill bed.  One slip on that mill bed and you'd be in a world of hurt.  If you put the jug down lower, probably wouldn't work as well. It's more out of the way while milling being up high.  The only hassle is going up with 5 gallons of water.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

When I picked up my mill at woodmizer New York 2 years ago they told me to drill a very small hole in the cap because people lose them frequently. It has worked good and I have never even loosened the small cap or lose water when moving .

All this reminds me I need to pull the lube tank and start storing it in my well house except when actually in use so it doesn't freeze.

I refill my lube tank by pouring in lube from old laundry detergent jugs and windshield washer jugs etc. I find that easier than lifting the full 5 gal hug into place.

Any time I lose the cap I just cover the hole with electrical tape and poke a small hole in it with my pocket knife.

Never lost the cap but I did replace the WM jug itself with a much better jug for much less moolah. I've posted this before-go on Amazon and look for the blue plastic, Made in Canada water jug. They use the same main cap as you original WM jug and hold more if yer boy enough to get it up there full. I'm not the boy I once was so I cheat and fill it ~ 3/4 full. It doesn't nestle into the WM jug pan but lays at a slight angle and easily cinched down with the original WM bungees. Much heavier plastic but much better price. I first tried a jug from ULINE catalog that fit well which was cheaper but lasted a year or so as not UV resistant. Maybe if your setups indoors it's a good choice.

Man...I'm really surprised that I haven't lost mine yet!  But today's another day I guess.
I saw a local guy buy a similar water container (but blue) at Dick's Sporting Goods and use it instead.

My cap is on tight and I drilled a 1/16" vent hole in the tank.  Next time I will drill the hole in the cap but no problem as it is.

My cap never stayed on the day I got the mill.
I don't know what happened to it.
I'm not mobile some splashes out when the head moves back and forth.

I sawed all day today and took a gander at my fine blue jug->the key search term word is "Reliance" if you need one, and as a matter of fact mine has a keeper on the vent cap so it's never going to get lost.
I have like 5 gallons of winterized lube water I saved back from this spring which is about to go back into the jug when I start sawing pine again.

I used some gorilla glue and some really strong kind of plastic string to secure a string to the cap and then tie to the handle of my water jug.. should keep it from running away on me hopefully.

FWIW- Polyethylene plastic is a heat melt type of plastic and glues itself via the spade tip on a soldering gun. Use an empty milk jug cut in strips as the "filler rod" and you can repair your lube jug if it cracks.

I drilled a hole in the cap and tied a piece of masons cord through the hole and to the jug handle.   I have two jugs for my portable jobs. Both have the caps retained by string.  I never have to take the vent cap off. The string keeps the lube from sloshing out the hole in the cap and lets air in.
