A few weeks ago a group of forestry students from the Univ. of New Brunswick stopped in for a tour of our woods.  The group was wrapping up a field trip that exposed the students to central hardwoods.  Before ending the tour with a look at a small landowner's attempt to manage a small woodlot they had traversed walnut plantations in northern Indiana, two state forests, and one of the premier veneer mills in the world.
Why Indiana?  Why my woods?
The group's professor, John, is a Purdue grad and hails from Indiana.  The man who coordinated the tour, Burney Fischer, taught at Purdue, was the Indiana State Forester and now teaches graduate courses at Indiana University.
I only managed two pics because I was talking non-stop trying to answer questions and otherwise look like I new something about my woods  :D

Here are the four forestry students and Burney pausing on the way up a slope:

this pic shows John and Burney posing by a large sassafrass tree.  The tree is listed in the big tree book of Indiana as the largest sassafrass in Monroe County.  There are bigger sassafrass trees elsewhere in the state.

I wish I could remember the names of the students and John's last name but I have slept since then  ;)

Perhaps someone who was there and found their way to this forum could fill in the details.

Nice pics.
I'd a guessed a walnut from the pic of the Sass, but just cause of the pic. Nice tree.

Would that be John Kershaw?

Be nice if it was a walnut  8)

Detail gets lost when scrunching the pic.

Kershaw?  Hmm, could be but I can't say for sure.

So your are Professor OWW? ;).  I applaud you for taking the time to meet with the students and from the pics, you have a fine place.  That sassafras is "rockin'" 8).  Good stuff, OneWithWood.

He came along when I was in my final year at UNB. A lot of the old timers retired about then. Glenwood (Glen) Jordan had taught Forest Mensuration for years before. He's now into GIS and forest modelling.

Definately was Dr. John.   Kershaw not the NOLA musician  :D

It is great fun to show folks what can be done with a cut over woods given enough time and sweat.  It is doubly fun to walk the woods with younger folks who still have a long life ahead to make their impact.

I went on one of those trips with Kershaw back in 99 (I think) and went to Mississippi, Arkansas and a little of Louisiana.  Thanks for hosting my School.  The Forestry faculty will be celebrating 100years in 2008.
