They are talking about 5.1 feet from sea level for islands around Samoa. The Shaky Isles are spared.

The Wave didn't reach NZ, or it was only about a foot surge when it did.

But over 150 dead in Samoa, at least three of them were New Zealanders. A local school group had to 'run for the hills' as their resort was wiped out and some local surfers rode out the surge in the ocean on their boards. Most of the dead were children or old people.

Scary stuff

Was interesting watching the news tonight with film crew on the ground.

They did highlight the difference in the relief effort.

American Samoa had FEMA and military all over the place making sure they didn't make the same mistakes as New Orleans. There was a navy ship, helicopters, C17s and emergency folks from Hawai helping out.

Samoa also had plenty of relief workers, but they all seemed to be locals. Just the local young men with flouro vests on the back of a truck. The visited locals that were bunking down in schools and churches that survived the flood. They visited a family that had survived and already build a shelter from the wreckage of their old house in a banana plantation. The guys on the truck dropped of some food, water and blankets and they were fine.

NZ had sent up an Orion to search for folks washed out to sea, and a Hercules with supplies and medics and Air NZ has taken up supplies on commercial planes.

Was just interesting to see the 2 different relief efforts, both were working, But one relied on Govt and the other was grass roots using what they had. The other comment the reporter made, they had found no one complaining. There was a wait at the hospital, but people were getting treated. There were dead bodies, they got buried. People just made the best of things.
