Title: Bone Chillin'/Tooth Chatterin'....
Post by: Magicman on February 01, 2021, 03:49:06 PM
....cold here.  It was 41° this morning and has finally crept up to 48° now with a stiff North wind blowing.  Thankfully I have a good fire going in the fireplace insert.  It's forecast to drop down to 34° tonight and 31° tomorrow night.  Folks, that is below freezing!!!  Yikes!!!! :o

Omgosh! Make sure to go to the store for milk, bread and eggs.
These are dire circumstances you are about to get!

T'was -22° this morning or -30 for the metric people (we Canadians being one of them). Stay warm and keep the fire going.

Cleaned the furnace and flu this morning at 4:30 am, built up a morning fire and let it burn out. Was 35F with lots of sun, so no fire needed here during daylight unless you want 90+ degrees. :D Just built up a fire for the night. 12-18" of snow with a topping of rain over the next 2 days. Wanna share? :D

hahahahahahaha! That's a good one MM! :D :D :D :D Oh how I long for a 40° day, but it is going to be a while, I'm sure. It was a pleasant 12° this morning but then the temp just took a run and it got all the way up to 27, but with a 30MPH wind and heavy blowing snow. Kind of like a lightweight blizzard.  I am getting little concerned that my 10 cord of wood seems to be going down faster than I would like. When it gets to zero or below I use a bit more wood.
I hope you survive your hardship OK.

OG, how much are snow you forecasted to get over there? We're supposed to get 6-10, which is just a dusting in the Catskills. Got up to the low 20s, so I ran the mill until the wind turned the snow into little projectiles.

Wind gusting at 30 MPH.  Temp in the 30's.  Wind chill -50000 degrees.  Thought about running the sawmill today, but could not work up the frozen nerve.  Stayed in the warm house all afternoon with a good fire in the wood stove.  You Northern types are gonna get hammered.

Forecasts are all over the map. Hudson Valley weather pegs it at about 12-18" with heavier in some spot locations. The NWS is guessing 18-24 with 30" in some spots and it is looking like my holler might be in one of those sweet spots. As I tell my wife when she asks I say "I dunno, I'll tell you when I plow it." ;D I did a quick sweep a couple of hours ago to knock it down and now we have gained back another 5 inches or so over that. We are just about at a foot so far. I do see some heavy bands coming up on the radar but I don't know if this has the staying power they predicted. I will say when I was plowing it was still daylight and I was having a lot of trouble seeing with all the wind and heavy snow. My wiper doesn't clear the bottom edge of the windshield and I couldn't see the plow. ;D

I was marking trees for a project in Tannersville a few years ago and there was only about 18" on the ground. The GC said there was something like five and a half on the ground at the same time the year before.

Yeah, T'ville is only about 25 miles NNW of me BUT they have about 1,200' in elevation over me and that makes a big difference in these little hills. Barge is an hours drive from me (around the mountain) or 35-40 miles line of sight, but he gets hammered while we only have 6-12 inches here. Elevation is everything. Many is the time I come home from work out of Kingston where it is a sloppy drizzle and about 100' before my road turns off there is a white line across the road where it turns from rain to snow and everything from there on is white. It is weird.

I don't double  stack, I just cut  everything 42" from the beginning, but I'm burning pine. A day's wood, if I'm lucky at these temps:

Dave you must keep warm just going back and forth to the woodpile.
I did use Hemlock slabs in the summer for domestic hot water needs.
Mr Greenhorn, is that 10 face cords or 10 standard.
Im finally into my good firewood and using quite a bit less now.
The earlier wood was a lot of soft maple and cherry, n ow hard maple and beech.
im worried about next yr tho as most will b cherry.

I burn softwood and aspen all winter, that there tractor load would last me about 2 weeks. 3 floors to heat including walk out basement. Don't forget, water freezes below 32, so ya gotta heat the basement. :D

It was 48 here yesterday still have snow cover. 21 this AM and sounds like we are headed to below zero and single digit highs starting Sat or Sun and threw next week. Time to stay close to the house shop and Garn and feeding that hedge. Sounds like everyone is going to get a taste of some cold next week. Everyone stay safe.

By the end of next week we will be down into the low 20°'s.  My firewood stash needed replenishing a bit so this morning I was off to the Cabin with my trailer.

My firewood is bucked to length and most of it was under the shed.  Some loss due to moisture and termites, but the majority is solid.

That should be enough to finish this year and make half of next year.

Lynn, you are just killing me. That 'load' you've got there would last me about 2 days. Here is a photo of my shop wood pile shortly before I finished it. It is 3 rows deep and comes to about 5 cord.

I have another pile, same size, for the house. I am concerned that my 10 cord total may not last through the winter season.
Yes, I know you are poking our buttons up here in the glaciated north, but keep in mind we might get even at some point (likely in July or August). We don't really have an issue with sustained cold temps, it's part of life here, but it does makes things a little more challenging. It keeps us young (or kills us off early, I forget which). ;D :D

MM in anticipation of 18°F temps Id be bringing in the lube jug and running 10 ounces of RV antifreeze through the pump.  At that temp you may be in need of a new lube pump.

Not being a chemist I have no idea what spindle cleaner does to the temperature rating of WW fluid.
Running RV antifreeze through the pump and lines has been good protection for me up here in the (per WDH) glaciated north.
Keep roasting those termites as you stay warm.

This has been a colder winter for most folks in comparison to the last couple.

Burned 6 cords last winter and already 6 1/2 this winter and that's seasoned Oak.
Been loading the boiler every 12 hours.

I honestly don't know how some of ya'll do it up north with some of the temps I see posted.
Our coldest night here in western VA this winter was 18*.

It has been a mild winter here with Mondays snow being the first one that has stayed any length of time, very little frost in the ground and it all came out last week, this week has been the first week to stay below freezing this winter that I can think of.

I don't really keep track but would guess that I have burnt 1 cord of softwood and 2 of hardwood, mostly soft maple and yellow birch. (indoor wood boiler)

Winter came late here in the U.P. It's making up for it now. -18 last night and around 40" of snow this month. My only heat is a small lopi woodstove and I'm down to burning hemlock slabs. House stays close to 70 even without adding wood during the night. Might go cut and split a couple of dead standing maples  today if it gets at least up to zero.

I'm just a few miles from the coast (I can see the bay of fundy if I stand on my roof) so our weather is often warmed up a bit by the time it comes here. It is not uncommon to get your weather here or similar a day later. In land or further north from me in Nova Scotia is usually colder in the winter than here.

We are at 31° and no power due to the many frozen rain coated SYP limbs that fell during last evening & nights weather.  SYP limbs are not designed to hold the weight and snap off.  It was a devastating event and there are many roads closed and many thousands of folks without power.  They are reporting that 30% of our county is without power and 60% of the county where my property and Cabin is.

-59 is real, I've done -43  at a Lake of the woods Ice fishing camp,  not far away it hit -53. They had us wait a day they were worried the propane would quit flowing out on the ice for the fish houses.  We will get to -20 overnight here. Fire is burning.
In January of '76 while in Seba Beach Alberta the word was one morning that the propane was froze in the tanks in some areas.  The following week there was a chinook and it was mud in the work area.

I spent too many years not far from there, I don't miss the cold a bit! We expect frigid temperatures and are generally prepared but still get caught offguard occasionally. Stay warm and safe everyone, spring is not far off.

We just got our electricity back on so the Central Heat is back.  The fireplace can now resume it's job which is supplying supplemental heat.  fire_smiley

It's 43° outside now and we are forecast to get to 54° today and 63° tomorrow.  The forecast is for the 50's & 60's all next week.

I have 4 customers ready and waiting for sawing so maybe I can knock one of them out next week.   ;D

It got 10 degrees colder here, from 32 to 22F ;D But I have windows open in this solar heating situation, so the burning is minimum. In fact I can't even feel cold from the open window 3 feet away. 84F says the thermometer on the shelf. Love it! :D
