So after you retire you may think that it will be five o'clock everywhere, but in actuality, it will be five o'clock nowhere.  My advice is to tighten your drawers string because you will be in for a rough ride.   :D

How the heck did I spend 40-50 hours a week doing whatever was so important plus everything else that was/is truly important?

Got a whack of logs accumulating.  All tulip poplar.   There's a two red oak logs, two maples and 6 or 8 more tulip poplar logs to skid out.

I'm thinking solar kiln.

I have thoughts of a small solar kiln in the future. Keep us updated!

Been doing this as a hobby for a while now. So far I have cut my own logs or picked up free ones. I plan on buying logs and getting a little busier starting this year. So I figured I better start paying attention to a logs yield.

Still on the Spruce pile.

Richiway, the good news is that pretty much every scale favors the sawmill, as far as I can tell anyhow.

The nice thing about a thin kerf band mill is it can beat the scales in the hands of a good sawyer.

We should be able to get 20% over Doyle and Scribner blindfolded with bandmills🙂

We are dodging the weather but as of now I am scheduled to begin a Cypress job Tuesday.  This is 7 tree length logs from 37' to 56' with the largest butt being 36".  I do not know the cut list but I do know that there will be some beams/timbers and the longest lengths will be 16.  What a way to start the year because I loves sawing Cypress.   :)

I got the mill back up and running so I opened up an Ash log, had 3 clear sides and an off center pith.  The last side had this laughing face. Supposed to snow this weekend so I may be done for awhile.

Old Greenhorn

WOW! I never get ANYTHING like that in ash and I have milled a bunch of it! You lucky dog, make something sweet with it. Nice chunk of wood!
So what was the fix on the mill?

Full dimension red and white pine 2x4x16' for uprights on shipping crates (they get cut down to 2-6' and 1-4'). Boring, but they pile up fast and pay the bills👍 These go to a local outfit that buys decorative white birch poles, and ships them nationwide. They even shipped a container to the Netherlands recently.

Oh, that spell check must've been on siesta.
OTH , I was born in the Netherlands, so I'll check in with some relatives to see if there's some cultural traditions that have slipped past me.

Rust, crud, various corrosion removal on the charging surfaces. It bucked and missed a little bit the first 30 to 45 seconds but ran satisfactorily when warmed up.  It just needs a roof over its head.

I was finally able to go verify the "Magicman Special"....

The potential customer called me yesterday with a couple of questions and said they had managed to drop a few trees and he was in the process of bucking, limbing and cleaning up.

I went for another site evaluation today. His cut  list was primarily 6"x12" beams...loblolly pine.
Side lumber 1xs and some 2x8s.

All of them...

25" small end.
27" large end.
20ft in length.

Largest DBH still standing.

I won't say I'm nervous...but I'm heading into uncharted territory.
He's consulting a couple of builders familiar with beams. Possibly adjust the length down.

MM - I am persuaded EVERYTHING you saw is a Magicman Special - so I will rename my topic if appropriate.

Anything goes my Friend.  When I saw the trees I was concerned, but the growth rings dispelled any reservations that I might have had.  Those are truly "special".   thumbs-up

Hopefully they will all be tight grained like the above.   :)

The pics of those logs qualify as sawyers porn!
Change is hard....
