We are in on of the areas.  I do not know if its the 13 or 17 year batch.  I'm happy to not be in the overlap area.  We had that about 20 years ago and they decimated a lot of young trees.  I had planted some aspen trees and they were doing well.  Then the cicadas destroyed them.  I'm worried about my apple trees.  I havent seen or heard them yet, but I'm sure it won't be long.  I hadn't thought about the chickens.  I didnt have chikens last time.  We will have to be sure to let the chickens out to feed.  Should be fun to watch.

I would like to see what you guys think and if you have any good or bad point on the mill. I still need to attach the motor and add some blade/wheel guards.

Quote from: SwampDonkey on Yesterday at 12:58:58 PMWhy no ban on green sawlogs moving? That was likely where most moved volume wise.

I asked this exact question of the folks in our state that were in charge of the firewood movement restrictions when they were put in place. THe answer was "lobbying from the forest products industry." The regulators were told if they restricted movement of ash saw logs and pulp it would cripple a whole industry.

So what does the industry do now that most of the Ash is dead and almost dead? It makes no sense unless they needed  to switch their processing to a different kind of wood?

The mills just buy it from where the Ash is still alive/hasn't been infested, like where I am. Everyone else is out of luck I guess? The mills will be eventually, too.

Not restricting movement of sawlogs allowed it to be harvested more heavily ahead of the infestation, but that harvesting may have contributed heavily to the spread itself. Life sure is difficult to navigate.

Hey guys my dad is a retired swamp logger now heavy equipment mechanic. He has ran into a problem on a 2009 Tiger Cat Loader. It has no pilot pressure. He said it will run but has no functions. He has changed out the pump to a good used one, changed filters. He has been scratching his head on what could be the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When drying hardwoods in a DH kiln the idea is that you have better control of the drying when you don't vent but this is only a concern if the wood is over 25% as you can over dry it then and cause defects. Below 25% it is not a concern.

@Magicman, @Percy
Thanks for the replies.  For some reason I kept thinking the problem had to be in the blade lube system control box.  I hope to take the mill out of it's winter hibernation location some time this week, however the weather forcast is for rain for most of the week.  Then I will be doing some exploring to try and find the problem area.
Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Cutting  1/4 sawn timber out of stringybark you may need to cut inches of bow out of your timber. Because of the amount of tension in it, meaning you need much bigger logs then if you where sawing them out of something like pine.

I am wondering If it is ok to box the heart of stringybark logs or if they will rot out faster.
Cheers Jack jr
