Title: Steal Doors For Solar Kiln
Post by: liljim on September 10, 2006, 07:26:44 PM
Hi this is my first time posting but been reading for some time. I was interesed in your thought on using steal entry doors to build a solar kiln. I can pickup just the doors for $2.00 and thought they would make a good kiln because they are already insulated. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Jim - welcome to the forum!

Re steel doors for a kiln, if you dry oak it may cause the steel to rust out (unless they are stainless).  As oak dry's it produces an acid which is hard on kilns.  I don't know if solar kilns are susceptible to this, but my dehumidification kiln definitely is.

To add to Scott's comments, I would think that the high humidity levels alone would be enough to cause rusting.

Steel doors will rust quickly and are not very well insulated anyway.
