Forestry and Logging / Re: Capstan winch (portable!) ...

Quote from: John Mc on May 08, 2024, 10:41:24 PMPortable Winch Company is one of the better options for portable winches out there. I'm curious what cold not be worked out with them. They ship to a number of countries.
The product looks good but there are a number of problems with their setup but two big issues that lead to one giant wormhole:

1: "Dealers" : They claim to have dealers. Well, not really. They have a phone list. No actual dealers with anything in stock in my area. Also, dealers all stated that they would not warranty products not sold by them (meaning if you buy directly from Canada, no warranty).

2: Pricing is all over the place. They have multiple prices everywhere and no consistency. Their Canadian website has the same product for much cheaper. When I inquired if I could pay in Canadian dollars they said no and came up with all sorts of stupid excuses (including US tariff on Chinese goods - but wait, I thought your product was all Canadian? Hmmm).

I don't like paying more than I have to for stuff. If the price is $2 somewhere, why do I have to pay $4? They never could come up with reasonable answers to anything. Basically, the two people I dealt with were just not good salespeople and managed to turn me off. I would rather buy an American or (Canadian!) mule than send those guys my cash.

Me too Howard.  This was just a perfect example for multiple cants with a nice top end log and the proper cut list.  Actually this was the 4th log on this job where I could do this so I finally decided to take pictures.  A video would have been nice.  ffsmiley

It was also a perfect example to show the side support extensions which also are very valuable when turning large, knotty, and mis-shaped logs.

I think they are a visual aid.  When you screw up and make a band dive they provide visual re-assurance that your band is in fact diving via an impressive spark show.  At least that is my experience.   ffcheesy

Yes, even my comment above was speculation and we all know about opinions.

Folks ordering and overloading what was once a viable manufacturing process really screwed up the system.  They were ordering several sawmills with the intent of reselling and making a huge profit.  Now that the bubble has popped, these buyers are refusing/declining their orders and the manufacturer is stuck with trying to locate legitimate buyers that ordered similar equipped sawmills and retrofit whatever options that are necessary.

Howard, that story reminded me of my Grandma, who lost an arm due to an injury she got in a car accident when she was 9. She loved to fish and I have fond memories of fishing with her. She'd stuff the butt of the rod under the stub of her arm so she could reel with her hand. Switch to her good arm for setting the hook and casting obviously. She was a remarkable woman, one tended to forget she was missing an arm. Also, she drove like a demon!😂😂 Get out of the way!

I remember one time we were in Minneapolis, I was riding with Grandma, folowing my putzy driving Dad in the car ahead of us. Grandma said, "he can't be driving that slow down here- someone's going to shoot him!"😂

Well, yesterday was a body mandated day of rest, although I ended up feeling way better than I should have. Today other stuff awaIts. Might as well. I lost a hard to change brake line last weekend and I know my limitations. Truck has been at the shop in line since Monday morning, best guess, first of next week. My U.P. style has been seriously cramped!!
