When using metal pins to align a frame while working, should the metal pin be the same size as the peg that is going in the hole or just a little bit smaller?

For example, if the wooden peg for the hole is 1" should I use a 1" metal pin or should I get a 15/16" metal pin?  Or does it even matter?

There is a thread about this subject around 2015.  In the UK, it seems they're called podgers.  Tapered pins, with a long taper.  I'm having a local welder tack a t-handle on the end of mine.

I read that post before I put this question up.  It did not answer my question.

I first got a 1" pin but then, Jack Sobon told me to use a 15/16" pin. That is what I have used and it seemed to work ok for me.

Ah excellent!  It also just dawned on me that offsetting a tenons peg hole also plays into the size of the podger.
