Anyone have the lowdown on burning laurel?

I've heard that burning laurel releases a toxin.

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.

I remember being told by some smart person not to stand in the smoke of any burning heath. Since then I talked to an old forester, his daughter and husband are here for the weekend. I brought that up with him and he laughed. Turns out Dr Grabow pipes at one time looked into using rhododendron for pipes, apparently very similar qualities to briarwood. I can't say for certain but I believe it is a wives tale.

When I was about 14, on a camping/hiking trip in SW Virginia, we built a big campfire and burned what we could find, including mountain laurel/rhododendron. The next day and for days afterwards, my face looked like it had been washed in poison ivy oil. But I was the only one in the group who reacted to it.
