I was missing out on jobs with my lt30 because I could only cut out to 16', so I upgraded to the LT40, so I could take care of those folks who wanted the 21' beams. Now they're asking for 24' beams lol. Looks like I might have to get tricky with those roller toe boards ;)

Congratulations on the upgrade!  ;)

There are a lot of threads on here about how to cut lumber/timbers/beams that are longer than the mill you're using!

Then you buy a BX so you can cut 45', and you need to cut 47'.

Then you add another BX so you can cut 57'.

Ground frost heaving equals . . .keeping it level.
Much easier with a laser level.
Dave Shepard's first photo looks like his mill is setup on concrete - THAT's the best way to go!

Support equipment has to be able to handle the weight and length of those long logs too.

You keep chasing until you've sawn the longest log in the area.

Dang, you have all the cool toys! I think I'll stick to the standard bed length for now and just do a little trick sawing until I get the mill paid off and can buy the support equipment to handle longer stuff. Then I might consider the bed extension set up permanently at my place on a pad. That way I can connect the mill without to much trouble. I don't want to give up my mobility, that's my bread n butter right now. Although, I see 2 new Sawyers on Craig's list that I'm competing with and have to drive by to get to most of my jobs. Might be time to find a niche. Beams might be a tough niche to get into since I have Hull oaks not to far away. They can cut beams up to 85' https://youtu.be/cF_BR1Cf-9c

There is a series of of videos on YouTube, I watched them all the other night and it's pretty interesting considering much of the mill is still run off of steam.

When I worked at Carlotta Lumber, on the California coast just south of Eureka, we cut logs that size and bigger all the time. Max length there was only 30'. We cut lots of Douglas fir, redwood and Sitka spruce. Part of me misses that.

I've had people ask me why I go to all the trouble of milling the long timbers, there must be someone around who cuts them. I say yeah, I'm the one who cuts long timbers around here! :D

In 1990 I helped fall and log the last old growth redwood sale in California. I think the biggest one was about 5' through.

Dave, do you do any mobile sawing, or are you stationary?
