if I could go back I might give my former self some advice. some of these might help others.

yes you can lift it.... doesn't mean you should

yes you do need ear plugs

yes it is just one cut, but put on your safety glasses

you don't need seconds

That wall isn't square/straight/level "enough"

I wont remember where I put that later

you aren't going to fix that someday

It doesn't need to be a little tighter

just wait, the paint isn't dry yet

no you don't need to buy that

yes you do need to start saving

just because its true doesn't mean you should say it  ;D

Yes you did need to read the instructions

you don't know where you are going

do it right the first time

not everyone around you is your friend

just because a lot of people think it is ok doesn't mean it is right

have faith God will take care of you

Check the oil

;D ;D ;D just the beginning....

Those are great - so true - especially "it doesn't need to be a little tighter"!  Oh, how many times I've snapped a bolt...  Are you a genius and just come up with those or did you find them somewhere?

Just North-East of Sacramento...

SkyTrak 9038, Ford 545D FEL, Davis Little Monster backhoe, Case 16+4 Trencher, Home Built 42" capacity/36" cut Bandmill up to 54' long - using it all to build a timber frame cabin.

These are just my own life lessons. Obviously with these lessons I am not a genius. That reminds me of another one

You aren't as smart as you think you are

Listen when someone you respect is telling you something.

When you think things are hard just hold on to your shorts this ain't nothing

Just because it looks good it doesn't mean it will get you where you're going...

Very good list. I think I'll take a screen shot of it & send it to My Son's. You being under 40 they might take the advise. Think I'll high light the one about over tightening stuff  to my Marine Son 8) Thanks

You kinda had this one,
don't try to save seconds,it will cost you minutes.
I won't bother,chaining,tieing it,it won't fall off.  ;D

That is a good one also.

Don't beat yourself up, instead be proud of who you are

For me this one does ring true, I am hard on myself but I am proud that these are lessons I have learned.

YC,

   Very good points. How about:

I'm sure the blade will clear that clamp.

You guys can make some posterboards up and pass them out. alot of us might need them in our shops. i know i do :D

dmartin

Very good list, they all fit me like a glove. Especially the first one, spent the last 4 1/2 months recuperating from major back surgery. It would have been nice to have avoided that. I now warn many people "don't lift that, get some help" but most are like me and will need to learn the hard way. So it goes and always will. Have a good one.

If all the comments listed were a bucket list I would not have many left to do.
Concerning this particular comment "That wall isn't square/straight/level "enough" ", but I was building rustic.

I think I'm guilty of everything on that list. Reminds me of an old saying: "We grow too soon old, and too late smart".

I can relate to so many of them...
That four pound sledge will make your fingers sore, broke, and bent for a long time, safety rope you are using is much too long and it will hurt like hell once you reach the end of it after said hammer hits your hand that is holding you up on that beam.  :o

set that board farther from the stove or it will crack

cut on the other mark the one is too short.

Yes i can make that swing into a bench but it would be easier to just make a bench into a bench
