Title: modding my 390 Husky

I want to mod my 390 or one of my 385s. I would like to do all the mufflers, but would like one of them ported and tweeked as much as possible.( for work,not competing) Would like any advice I could get. I can't find anybody on the east coast that does the work. I would have to send it out to the west coast. The porting doesn't look that difficult if I knew the specks. I have heard you have to change the coil also.(blue being stock,black being the one I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat. I have a 562xp that I'm going to have ported. For me it looks like I'm going to send it to a reputable builder in Tennessee.I don't know him nor have I done business with him but I hear very good things about his work.  It will be around 250 to have it done.

im not looking at the ocean but im considered to be on the east coast  :D
so if your looking to get that saw up to speed for production work i can help you out.i will be putting a build thread up on another site here in the next week on a  "wicked work saw 385" over on another site. i seem to have a little extra time in the shop these days with all the rain tn is getting. i cant get more than a day of logging in to save my butt.

Your imagination is your limitation. From what I was told, there is a fella who machines a 2 piece head on 390's for worksaws that fell up in Alaska professionally.

I myself port finger ports on this Husqvarna design that run through the cylinder wall. The FP's are fed from the intake duct.

If ya want just a basic woods port, widen the ports and tighten up the squish band via a thinner gasket made out of just about anything.

Before you even think about grinding, practice on junk cylinders to familiarize which porting bits work best for you.

I forgot the most important part. With 400/600 wet, bevel the edges of the ports so the rings have no chance to catch.

timberjack, if youre unfamiliar with porting a saw & want it done right,  please don't try a 390 on your first go around. One slip of the grinder can be a costly mistake.
I know several saw builders (including tlandrum) who have excellent reputations for the quality and performance of their work.
Send me a PM if your interested in a list of reputable/qualified (IMO) saw builders.
Pricing will vary slightly, but all are worth the $

MakitaCS what size bar/chain is on that 390 in the video? Unless you're 8 ft tall I'd say its 18-20", which should be able to keep up pretty well even in dry hardwood.

18-20 was my guess too!

I wanna see perform like a 390 was supposed to......with a 36" and pull the same RPMs.

 :D Oh here we go again .I'm not so certain you need a 500 dollar Foredom to cut the ports on a saw engine .A few years back ole Gypo  did an 044 with a couple chainsaw files and a piece of sandpaper .Believe it or not it ran pretty good .I ran the thing myself as a matter of fact .

I agree. I've done nice work my $99 Dremel.
Nothing extensive, mostly cleanup stuff.
Anything I couldn't reach with the flex shaft got hit with a modded file

In stock form, it pulled a 32" bar like no ones business...

Be careful what you ask for!

Gotta split, I'm tiggin' the blocks on the 262 Alky burner   :)

What I can't figure out is if the saw stopped in the middle of the cut or he shut it off .

Another thing I guess I don't understand is if the saw chain was filed to pull dust or if it's on backwards .Generally speaking it should pull big chips not bug dust .Maybe they do things in California differently ?

Say Rick are you still using a router to port saws with ? --no sir I didn't forget  ;)

That was an astute observation I hadn't thought of .I wouldn't have thought ole honest Rick would attempt to decieve his brethren but it is the internet you know .It would however explain why only a partial cut .

Canyon oak as I gather is a type of "evergreen green"oak native to northern California related to the red oaks and live oaks .As I recall and I have a real good memory young Chevy cut some a few years back with his router tuned saw .It looked a little punky to me but that was about two years ago before he graduated to a Foredom die grinder as oppossed to the router and sand paper .Evidently he still likes sand paper having made mention of it .Most of us use Craytex but we don't have his vast knowledge .

Rick once made a statement that people would always remember him .He got his wish . ;)

Watched the vid again. It stopped / cold seized if you ask me.
Saw sounds on the lean side.
I mean who decides to shut a saw off in the middle of cutting a cookie @ WOT?

& Why?......to color tune a saw?........NAH...its not a freaken sled or an MX bike.

The scary thing about this Summit Saw Shop 390FP...

It doesn't even have 3 thanks run threw it since I bought it new.

Once it has at least 10 tanks run through it, I'll post a vid sporting a 32" bar  ;D

It'll sound and run like its younger brother sporting the same style finger ports. Btw, the 346FP is still running the OEM carb  :-X

In addition  to being noisey is that saw considered fast by the high standards of California ?

The one that showed up near Meadville Pa a few years back was noisey but router made it certainly was not fast even considering corn field standards . ;D Perhaps there has been some improvement in techique since .

Work on your chain Rick .The saw doesn't sound bad but the chain needs some help .

If you look on U-tube under "Chevytown 13" you can probabley find a hundred vid clips of saws Mr. Medina is suppossed to have modified .

One is praticularly  interesting and is in fact some model of Makita his current user name which appears rather quick .That is until one takes note of the pine it's cutting which certainly is not oak .That fact aside that praticular saw is pulling a nice trail of chips so evidently someone knew how to file that chain or it was brand new .

I might also add that a 346 Huskey was shipped from Ohio to that area of California,Red Bluff  about that time in fact to a buddy of Ricks .So the internet being what it is really it's hard to say exactly who did what ---and when . ;)

As far as that praticular model if it's the same one I know who did it and who the brains behind it was and exactly where it went . ;) Funny isn't it exactly how small the internet has made several thousand miles seem .

Interesting.
I know a guy in Ohio who builds saws.
As far as being impressed with the 346 video, I certainly am not.
Weird how the video cut out just before the saw seized....kinda like the 390.
Also....the idle is WAY high on that 346 or the low end is too skinny.
My guess is.......ya ready......
The tranfers had too much material removed along with the "FP"ing and reduced transfer velocity caused idling issues and needed to be over corrected with the idle  ;)

Another astute observation . Fact one praticular fellow had them hogged out for extreme high speed and they needed to be brought back down by  the chain break because they had "run on " terrible .

In that case of extremely acute finger ports it might make for a dandy three cut wonder but if it snags a ring it will try to lift the cylinder off the engine running at over 16,000 rpm .From cookie cutter to junk in about a millisecond . :o

I kinda miss good ole Tom Tom in a way .He was in a hoot and I warned him about getting in a war of wits if one is only half so equipted to do so .

Now I can't figure out where in the world Mr.Medina got off to .Unusual he hasn't spoken out in a  type of slang  that it takes three hours on Google to figure out what in the world he said ,let alone what it means .

I have to quit this but I'm having too much fun with it . :D

I'm so far gone from the "rs" days it's not even funny. Those FP's aka CT13's that were developed during my time there are stout. One of rednecks buddies decided to try them. You know the old sweet adage...if you can't beat em, join em.

Here's the CT13 trilogy. 346FP WCE doing brush work behind Summit Saw Shop at the edge of the game trail. That was a fun day running a saw  :)

Exactly what "wrench " are you turning Rick ? That 390 should certainly pull a 32" with ease even stock .I mean if a dummy like me can get 72 cc's to do it in grand style a self proclaimed  genius should have no problem especially with more cc's to work with ,a full cubic inch as a matter of fact .

I would have thought you would  have seen that 038 Mag by now but I guess I forgot that you were banned from those sites ,pity .

Let me give you a little hint sir .Leave the chevytown 13 out of your signiture ,area 51 and all that mumbo jumbo .You might be able to sneak by under the radar on your next user name whatever  and wherever that may be .

I'll give you this though the 346 runs well ,ya did good .---but I know several right here in the redneck cornfield that run just as well so you didn't reinvent the wheel .

OK, so who's the redneck? Is it Adk or C4F? Sorry Al, I'm assuming you're the old man. :D Also, how does one take a procedure such as finger porting and assign it a term such as ct13? May be better left alone, because I could think up some creative designations for creations of my own I suppose, though they wouldn't be anything I could share here.  :D

It's an experiment that evidently worked I'd well imagine .But keep in mind if you ever saw some of those radical finger port jobs they are a wish and a  prayer from snagging a ring .

Some use external boost ports originating low on the crankcase and ending right above the intake at about the same level as the regular transfer .Keep in mind almost nobody  tries that on a working type saw .

Then you have up the back through windows cut in the back of the piston transfering through to groves ending above the intake port .None of those methods or any other is a radical new found cure all magic elixer because they've been around for decades .

Seems it got completely off track ,oops .

To the OP it would seem likely on a saw of this displacement that a simple modfication of the muffler with retuning the carb would probabley get the job done .It's been proven in a lot of situations that just by reworking the muffler can often show an improvement of 15 maybe 20 percent depending .

Obviously  it will get louder but you really should be wearing ear protection anyway .I wish I had over the years because I have a little ring-a- ding in the ears now from not .Too soon old and too late smart .

Well Ricky I guess you should be the expert on the router portion of that statement . I'm not certain where the dental floss fits into  the equation ,care to elaborate ?

Then according to that to a true expert it's more about the amount a tool can remove rather than the technique involved as if the process were an assembly line method ,like a 20 minute port job according to your genious mind .Interesting thought pattern .

Now young man just so you know I have an air powered die grinder that will go through cast iron at probabley twice the speed your fancy Foredom can gnaw away at aluminum .No in case you wonder I do not use it on a chainsaw engine .

Well Ricky is getting better it used to take him a few weeks to annoy people .Now he can go from a general nuisance to a gigantic pain in the rear in about 3 milliseconds.

Young Ricky doesn't get the concept of hotsaw racing east coast style .It's a cold start run ,8"poplar cant 18" off the ground .Not a round piece of balsa wood 6 inchs in diameter clamped 3 feet in the air in a log splitter with the saw running at the onset .

As far as Chardon Ohio ,it's one of the premere exibitions of it's kind in the USA .These are the best you'll find anywhere .I ran once and honestly didn't do that well but it was fun .The other guy Ricky is mealy mouthing won the 3 cube class one year .

Ricky is going to wear himself out patting his own back but he never got the idea that there's more to chainsaws even the racing portion than an egomaniacs toutings .--if you always do what you've always done you'll always get what you always got ---

C'mon Ricky put another 500 vid clips on .I know you've got them . :D

MakitaCS, from my information gathering, it seems like the reasons you are here posting your videos all of the sudden may not be for reasons I would appreciate. Care to set my mind at ease with a thoughtful reply?  I'm not real happy with the smell of an extremely lean twostroke oozing out of this board and into my report to moderator emails. I like it best when I only have to stick my head in here to find an answer to a personal chainsaw question.

I dare redneck to put on a show of a hot ported 390 with a 20" bar wrapped with a non fresh LGX chain, freshly filed though, and see if it will pull as many revs as Orange Bang does when pulled into seasoned oak. It's got to go just as fast with no hesitations in rpm drop...too many saws I see have hesitations in them  :)

Right, most of us run normal saws and it irks me when someone tells  us to run a saw at a kizzilion  rpm on edge of burning up.  Steve

Thats something I learned too. 99% of the people run stock to muffler modded saws only.
All my customers want in a saw is one that starts, stays running and has sharp chain.  8) 

They think the ported stuff is neat but thats where it stops and not needed to cut wood.
Heck I even noticed the wood dont care or complain that it takes me a few extra seconds to cut it with my stock saws.  :D :D

While doing a little carb research I came across sonething interesting on the 390.  Now uses a Walbro WJ-118 carb instead of the Tillotson HS.  WJ-118 venturi size is 17.46.  365XT and 372XT RWJ-4 venturi size is 19.05mm.  The RWJ-4 would be a direct swap.  Larger carb may work well with MM and WPort.
