Title: Here we go again. Hurrican Gustav.
Post by: Woodchuck53 on August 27, 2008, 06:39:08 AM
Morning all, oh well here we go again.  All our weather models suggest hurrican Gustav is going to be a bad one. We are leaving today after battening down the hatches. Will leave one full helicopter load of crew here until the last minute. The only good thing to come out of these storms is my fire wood volume picks up. That and we have had a small drought since May so the rain is helpful. Ya'll have a windy day. Chuck

Evening all, just made it back. But first news from home. The good news is i have more timber than I can get to right now. Been on a chainsaws for days it seems like. A lot of trees down around home in the community, but thank all that none at our home. A neighbor lost his mobile home so went with the big tractor and towed it off the lot to make room for the new one. A second cousins was electricuted at his home, still haven't got the straight on that one. Lost power for a couple days and had two rv's and eight people from the coast staying for 6 days. When they went home found their power had been out for days so that wasn't pretty. We got 18"s of rain following Gustav so was worried about  Ike coming thru with his winds. But as saturated as we were we only lost one older small oak.
Now to the platform. We took a pretty good lick. The wave sensors pegged out at 85' and went off line and the 2 smaller cranes on the drilling package are banged up pretty good. We got here around 10:30 and checked things over. We were able to get pot water and generators up so we stayed on site and will start bringing out repair crews tomorrow. A lot of the light weight fiberglass grating is missing on the 2 lower decks and a lsome of the lighting fixtures are gone. But we will try and be back on line by the time the pipelines are open on the beach. It could have been worse. Take care of your selves. Chuck.
PS. Lee it still beats hauling pulpwood. cv

Wow Chuck, that was a good report on how things really are!  85' seas? :o :o :o  I wouldn't want to be there, but wouldn't that be something to see?  The fact that you had a rig to go back to is a tremendous tribute to the people who designed it and to those of you who maintain it!  I, for one, really appreciate you and Lee and the others that have worked out there for bringing us a glimpse of life on the rigs.  It's a whole different world! :) :) :)
