I am starting my first build, I have been cutting up some timbers. After the holidays I want to start cutting logs. The home I am building will be D logs, from red pine. What I want to know is what to do with the logs until I am ready to build? I plan on cutting the D logs, stickering them, and covering the logs. I am planning to start assembling next winter. Should I paint the log ends, or treat them while they sit?

Pine really doesn't need end coating. Sticker it with 2x2's and leave that much space between them in the layers. Cover with old tin on top and nothing on the sides. If they are relatively square in section a groove ripped down the center of the bottom face will encourage the major check to develop there on a hidden face. I'd cut some extra to allow for rejecting some when you build.

Thanks for the advice. That is what I will do.

Are you draw knifing the bark off?
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!
