It makes me happy to know I may have made some soldiers smile.
« on: December 15, 2005, 11:30:54 PM »

The following appeared today in Short Circuits, the twice a week newsletter
for Dairyland Power.  This letter goes to all employees and COOPs in the
Dairyland system:

Coulee Region woodturners send handcrafted gifts to troops in Iraq
As president of the Coulee Region Woodturners, Duane Hill (Performance
Administration) proposed a legacy challenge to the club in October to
turn 100 pens for local soldiers serving in Iraq. The freedom pens were
shipped overseas by the Coulee Region chapter of Operation Homefront,
mainly for the 32nd Army National Guard unit out of Onalaska. Duane has a
brother-in-law who is normally a part of that unit, although currently he
is stationed with the Appleton unit in Iraq.

Each pen, crafted from the wood of Wisconsin trees, includes a card
thanking the troops for their service. The card also carries the name and
address of the woodturner for a personal connection. This is the second
year the club has participated in this creative philanthropylast year they
shipped 55 pens to the Freedom Pen Project for troops overseas.

Coulee Region Woodturners is a local woodturning club with 65 members,
affiliated with the American Association of Woodturners. Duane and Art
Ustby (Information Technology) are members of the club. More information is
available on the clubs Web site, www.crwoodturner.com.

Many thanks to you, Charlie, and your group.  Our troops in harms way deserve every bit of support we can send them.  :)

Asy, here are the pens I made this year.  I made 10 of the 100 pens the Coulee Region Woodturners donated.  This is the 2nd year we've sent pens.  Hopefully there will be no need to send any next year but if the boys are still over there, we will.

Oooh, they are so beautiful!!!

I love the dark ones especially, and I think the one at between 3 and 4 o'clock is my favourite.

You sure are a talented and big hearted man.

Trully a generous contribution Charlie.  I have a good friend that just returned from a year in Iraq, He is Army.  He tried for the Rangers but didn't make it.  From his letters he was in some pretty rough places.
I have Two son in laws that are in the Airforce and did numurous TDYs in the Mid-East, and A son in the AF, he is Crewchief on a C-130, so far he has stayed state-side, been to Lousiana and Mississippi several times, One thing I know From them is that they really appreciate anything that reminds them of home.
Thank You;

The Freedom Pen Project is a nationwide project started by the Sawmill Creek Woodworkers.  If you want to know more about it here is the website.  Woodturners nationwide have been making pens for our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.  It is a small way to show our appreciation for what our soldiers are doing for us.

I couldn't make a pen if I tried, but I have some really neat curly red cedar that I have squirreled back.  Let me know where to send a board or two and I'll provide the lumber.  Thanks guys.
I am in the pink when sawing cedar.
