How are really thick infestations of Jap barberry best controlled?

Barberry is a fairly easy plant to kill with herbicide. I often use a low (1-2% v/v) concentration of glyphosate (Roundup, Rodeo, Accord, or any generic equivalent)foliar applied any time in the growing season with good success. Garlon 3A, and Garlon 4 also work well. It is best to start controlling the outlying plants and work inward to the main infestation. This kind of "contains" the infestation. Barberry also keeps its leaves later than most native plants so if you wait into the fall it will have leaves and nothing else will, so you can spray and not worry about off target damage. There will be some seedlings that resprout, and the odd plant that you miss so plan on coming back next season to get any stragglers.
