We cut this today.  Not sure what it was.  The end grain was already sealed so I couldn't get a good photo of the end grain.

I don't think its black walnut.   We saw a lot of walnut.  There is no yellow between the sapwood and bark.

Eastern red cedar. With moderate weather damage on the surface, I might add  :D

If not cedar, then a badly discolored conifer. The branch knots are the giveaway, but plenty other hints. WDH, have you seen the wood in person to make a solid identification? OP, what did it smell like? Was it heavy? Hard? Or soft and light?

I'm stuck on cedar without seeing it in person to be wrong. The sap is severely deteriorated on the bark edge, and the left edge that's cut shows what looks to be fuzzed grain. Even the center heart near the pith that has a dense cherry look is indicative of a large cedar. The only thing that's throwing me off is the color. It's the color of oxidized cedar, not fresh cut. And I assume the pic was taken at time of milling. If the wood had been stacked a few days a little while, then it's spot on for cedar color.

If that was from up here I would say standing dead Black Cherry
If it can't be nailed or glued then screw it

This is the only other pic I have of the wood.  Tomorrow I get a pic of the bark.

That was fresh cut off the mill.   It is a hard wood for sure.   I had a guy offer me $800 for the whole milled log today. I guess it's a money tree.

For $800, the only reason you need to know what it is?  So you can get more of it!   ;D

Nice! $800 is a nice payday. I stand corrected. That's not cedar. Not that second pic.

It reminds me of a sweet gum i cut once. It had a big hollow jump butt and the log for about ten feet above it was red almost to the bark.

I thought sweet gum myself but have learned in here sometimes what the eye can see is only what the mind wants to believe[which always is not true]

But I second your opinion.

WDH

Sweetgum is diffuse porous.  This wood looks to be ring porous, not diffuse porous.

Jswigga, I carved duck decoys for many years and built furniture too.  I got a butternut plank from a customer and used it for a base for one of my carvings, it looks exactly like butternut to me.
