Title: Never heard of this.....have Y'all done it?
Post by: POSTON WIDEHEAD on March 24, 2015, 09:15:02 PM
A customer in Columbia, S.C........1 hour and 20 minutes South of me is bringing 60 or more logs. He has already brought 15 nice'ns. All of these straight Loblollys are in the 20 inch range.
He will make several trips with his newly bought 14 foot goose neck trailer with NO FENDERS. 8)

He will be giving me a cut list for the whole kit and caboodle.

Now......when he picks his trailer up, he will head to West Michigan, between Holland and Grand Rapids where he will start a cabin.
He wants all his lumber stacked and stickers on the trailer and he will strap it down.

He will be making several trips to Michigan.

I guess this will work....I've just never done it like this before.  ::)

Yes, I have stickered framing lumber on trailers before, but none of it went to Michigan.  He sounds like a good cu$tomer.   ;D

Was told here once before about making sure that a stickered load is tarped for travel.  Otherwise it will dry out way too fast.   So the load got tarped.

Will be interested in seeing the pics of the stickered stacks on the trailer. Cutting all the same length logs, or different lengths?
I'd worry some about the air drying, and the shrinkage, and keeping the straps tight enough that boards don't work loose along the way.  Hope he has a good plan.

Needs to be tarped. That is a lot of harsh drying.

Will you be able to get a full load with the stickers making your stack twice as tall? Seems like a good idea.

Brother Been.....yes I'm gonna take pics. If I said I had a poot in a jar, you would wanna see it.  :D
I do not know the length of the logs yet. I only have 15 and they are 10 foot. Some of the other logs should be here this weekend.

CustomSawyer......not gonna use my stickers. Gonna saw his out of his logs. He will take a load....stack and sticker it at the cabin site and come back to S.C.

And about the air flow.......we put fans on our green wood....IMO, I don't think the air flow from a trailer ride will harm the wood at all.

SHAKE BONE.......good idea, I will band it on the trailer then let him strap it.

drobertson........I will BRAG when the job is FINISHED.......yep....its a SOUTHERN THANG.

I just loaded one yesterday that way but it was just going to Florida. The guy has picked up several loaded that way.You just have to check your straps from time to time so things don't get ugly.

SC to MI, that's a lot of states.  Has he checked to make sure the departments of agriculture, DOT, Border patrol, homeland security and school safety patrol are all going to be ok with him bring green lumber through?
Title: Re: Never heard of this.....have Y'all done it?
Post by: Dave Shepard on March 25, 2015, 09:32:31 AM
I've shipped some stickered lumber. I put the straps right on the stickers, and it seems to hold together ok. I know I wouldn't want to ship hardwood green and untarped. A friend of mine used to have a flatbed and all lumber was tarped. Construction lumber always had their own lumber tarps from the mill, and for green lumber he had to use his tarp.

If it was stickered green grade hardwood, it would destroy the grade from surface check if not covered.

Sorry, I think I misread this as the lumber being hauled while being stickered.  But seems will be solid stacked with stickers sent along with.  Maybe not the only one to get that impression.

:D If the load isn't stickered while traveling, then you can forget the pics. I was more curious how the stickered load would be stacked and held down. But looks like that isn't a part of the plan. ;)

I stickered green red oak with 3/4" stickers, a 2x3 on the bottom, and bundled them tight with 3/4 poly straps about every 24".   "Forkable bundles" about 1000#max for easy loading & unloading.  After loading, the trucker put his wide poly straps over the bundles and cranked down on them.  The ratchet handle was about 4' long and he was hanging on it.  Then everything got tarped as shown in the pic above.

I thought all lumber hauled 50 miles from its origin or across state lines had to have a certificate that it was kiln dried, or chemically treated to kill bugs that may be hitch hiking along.  :)

Actually since you guys mentioned it there could be a gypsy moth quarantine issue here.  Not really sure what the regs with lumber with no bark would be.  I know to send logs from here to there I would have a few hoops to jump through.

The NY DEC site says that the USDA APHIS controls interstate firewood, log, and sawn lumber movement, but it only seems to control hardwoods. :)

Look....this guy lives in Columbia S.C. He has land in Michigan.
He has a friend in Columbia that is felling Pines on his farm in Columbia and giving him ALL the Pine and some Red Oak.

He could not find a band mill close to Columbia to saw his lumber. He found me through the Woodmizer website.

I do not know the size of his cabin. My customers can haul their lumber anyway they want to.....just as long as they pick it up, pay and get it out of the way.

I do not get into the laws from state to state about transporting lumber.....I run a sawmill.
My off bearer is a Highway Patrolman. He does not care where the lumber goes and does not know or enforce these laws.

So this is how it stands.

We would send out 20-30,000 board feet a day of green hardwood, and none of our deliveries were within even 100 miles. We didn't haul to other states however as all our markets were in Michigan.

So is what you are sawying that -

First they call to talk about the job and you jaw with them
Then they show up with their logs and you saw on them
When you're done with their boards there's not a flaw in them.
If it comes to what he does with the wood you don't quote the law to them
And if anyone asks anymore questions about it that'll be the last straw for them?

I have taken a load of sawed and sticker poplar from Virginia to New Mexico.  One of the things we did, thinking of the air flow, we cut the size of the stickers in half.  This really cut the size of the stack down.  But with him needing the stickers in Michigan, I don't know if you can do it or not.

his buddy cut the logs in columbia? was his name jaun :)
my feeling is the lumber won't air dry much on the trip, most air flow needs to go cross ways on the bundles to carry the water out, since the bundles will be end ways on the trailer no worries plus you cant dry pine to fast, even if it came from columbia ;D

I used to have a customer in Phoenix, AZ that wanted it the same way. Sticker stacked on his trailer. He would come when I told him it was ready, and I would load stickered bundles of mostly Ponderosa Pine 1x12's with the tractor. I never saw him tarp it, and I have no idea how it turned out for him. But he did come back several times.  ;D
Phoenix is about 550 miles from me.

My customer was suppose to leave Columbia with a load of logs and be here by 11 am yesterday. He bought a new to him, 20 ft. Gooseneck to haul his logs.
He had to go through the weight station right out of Columbia and he was 6,000 pounds over weight.
He called and said it would be next week. He was not very happy.

Started sawing the 12x12 beams today. These are 8 foot. I have 60 of these to saw.
12, 16, and 21 foot logs will be here toward the end of the month.
These will be delivered by a tractor trailer.  :)

A lot more to saw. The customer is actually looking to get a guy with  42 foot trailer to bring logs.  :)
I am just now starting this job.
