Title: 2021 Annual Forestry Forum Pig Roast August 6 & 7th, 2021!
Post by: Jeff on June 09, 2021, 11:01:15 AM
2021 Annual Forestry Forum Pig Roast August 6 & 7th, 2021!

Yesterday we order the pig and the port-a-potties (MEN'S and LADY'S!) so that means it is time to start getting a count for the pigroast :)

The following is text taken from our last rsvp thread. Since then you know how true this can be!!!

I'd like to take a moment and encourage, that this year, if you have been meaning to come, but keep telling yourself " I'll make it next year", Make it this year! No one knows what the future holds, and as I get deeper in this life, I'm beginning to get a fuller understanding of that. We should grasp each moment like it is the last and celebrate it!  Now, on to the details!

Remember this is a family event. We have a pool for the kids and when we know there is going to be a group, we plan activities to include them. So, if ya got em, BRING EM!  :D

You are not required to rsvp to attend, but we sure would appreciate it if you think there is a good chance you are coming to add your number of attendees to our count. This gives us a good idea on what to expect and also gives incentive to others to come. You can always retract if you need to, but you won't  ;) :).

Area Motels (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+lodging&hl=en&ll=43.995778,-84.92981&spn=0.51866,1.344452&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=lodging&hnear=Harrison,+Clare,+Michigan&t=m&fll=43.995778,-84.92981&fspn=0.51866,1.344452&z=10)

Area Camping (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+camping&hl=en&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=camping&hnear=Harrison,+Michigan+48625&t=m&z=11)

I strongly recommend getting opinions on hotels or motels in the area from us or other members that have come to the pigroast. There are a handful that turn up on those google maps that we will strongly advise against. There are plenty of very good places to stay.

ITINERARY:
Friday, August 6, Set up day, visiting, pig prep, Supper, menu still being planned! Bon fire. Swimming, more visiting!

Saturday, August 7, Pancakes and sausage breakfast at 8 a.m., Pig around noonish, followed by more visiting.

Obligatory covid statement. Tammy and I are fully vaccinated, however we are making ZERO criteria for anyone else. If you want to come. Come. You decide. This is AMERICA~!

Please continue the count in your post. :)
BROKAW FAMILY
Jeff, Tammy, Jeremy, Stacy, Denise, Joe, Sharon, Gene.
8

One addendum.  This will be the last "annual" pigroast. From now on as we are able, they will be only every other year.

I sure hope they open the border would love to see our friends from the North country be able to make it. I don't think @doc henderson (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041) has found this thread yet, or he may be busy. I know he has a campsite reserved right near ours and FFOTS so I assume that as long as he is there they will be coming along also. ;D

I can't wait to head up there.  The family and I are heading to Branson for 10 days in July.  We will get home from that on Sunday and then I will head to Michigan on Monday.  22 days off in a row total.  Did I say I can't wait?

Never been to Michigan before....say a person wanted to get from this pig roast to Peshtigo, WI...how long would that take?

Google says 5 hours and 26 minutes....is that about right?

planning on being there.  yes lots of distractions at work as we merged with USACS at my hospital and company.  Very distracted and lots more to do than I can fathom.  still planning on camping and spending some time.  my wife may not be able to get that much time off.  I may bring my daughter if she is not working.  I still have about 10 hours of onboarding and admin stuff still to do in my free time.

Gee if "onboarding" is anything like 'waterboarding' it sounds like your job is more interesting that I thought. :D :D Yeah, I am glad we are still in your plans because I am really looking forward to meeting up with you for more than a brief phone chat. I hope work goes as smooth as possible.

I just checked to see how Hidden Hill Campground is filling up that weekend and see that there are still spots available. I also noticed that they have added a second rental trailer. For hose comfortable with trailer life and driving a long distance and don't want to drag their own along this is a nice option. My wife and I got the first one reserved months ago, now they have a second one. Just bring towels and linens. Perfect for us.

My wife and I took a camping honeymoon (44 years ago) but we decided to stop and visit her cousin who was working for the DOS in DC at the time. We wound up in 5 Corners, VA and looked for a last minute motel to spend the night before moving on to Williamsburg. I was just 21 and when I walked up to the desk in this little place and asked for a room for the night I should have been suspicious when the clerk looked up and said "All night?!" Worst place we ever stayed and the worst night's sleep I have ever (not) had. I have slept better in a sleeping bag tied up to a rock to keep me from sliding off the mountain on a 10° night. Ah to be young and stupid  naïve. We left that place at 4:30 in the morning because we couldn't stand it anymore and the next room over had 3 sets of occupants through the night, all of whom made a lot of noise.

my now wife, then GF were last minute invited to go on a rafting/gambling trip with my nurse and her family in Colorado.  they were all staying at the same hotel and got great rates.  we traveled in caravan, and all went to their hotel first. and try as we might, we were not able to get a room there and all stay at the same place.  called 3 times.  when we arrived, we could not get in the parking lot for all the police cars with light flashing.  we were happy to go on down the street.

Hi Folks,

Ya'll might need to tighten up what your drinking. I've been meaning join in more, not just troll and stalk, but ya know life....
Ready to share as Melissa's back in Middle TN with the gankids, lucky us.

I'm back and would like to attend the pig roast.
Will you allow swing blade sawyers from the left coast?
Senior Oso Bear and I ain't no 'wegans, and love the other white meat!

I have been very busy here in the Oakland Hills mill site of Fish Ranch MillWorkZ this year. That year of the 'Damdenic Rat was real drag and we kept a real low profile.

I need to update my profile as I became a member some time last year but got a new 'puter and could not log in and the contact links wouldn't get me anywhere. (note to Admin good job keeping out the riff raff!).

I have been in the industry for more than 35+ years mainly on the elect/Mech/Maint and operations side. Love making chips, shavings, swarf and sparks too. Not at the same time to often TTL! Urban salvage milling was a side hobby.

I retired early @ 58, loved the job, sick of the mid level management.

I upgraded to a Lucas 10/30 Swinger with manual wide cut band slabber,
WM industrial resaw, 20 "RAS, 25" Newman planer, a quiver of stilhs and a bunch of standard wood working machines.

Current support equ are 2015 Izuzu NRR dump bed log truck with a 4K AM 23' loader with a 48" grapple. The rig has 8k and 12k winches w synthetic line, 8-10mm?
A 2005 toyota 4wd tacoma PU, 8 'HD utilty service n support trailer and a 525g Multiquip HP fire pump trailer for our  VFD.

Our, (my, NO employees!) business is logging services, general material and HD equipment millwright, rigger, movement and transport, Sawmill and mill services and support.
I also do tec service support services mainly in the hd wood, metal n manufacturing industries.

I work mainly in the local East Bay Hills in residential, Municipal, Park Landand Public utilities land and R/Ws. 75+% of the work is in the Urban/Forest Interface Zone.

I am a bespoke mill, will cut to order on or of site, or when cutting on spec will cut boards, timbers, posts, just some slabs,(the market is flooded, look at what you can get from wayfarers for a buck 99.), Deal and cants as the logs present them self.
Prize to the first 'un to tell us what Deal is.

Primary species by volume & value.
Monterey Cypress, Black Acacia, (aka CA Koa, Black Waddle AU), Monterey Pine, Coastal Redwood, Blue Gum Euq.

Sorry for the long winded introduction as i'm just unwinding from a trip to a mill in S WA. On the return trip, paid road trip! 8) the truck broke down in Redding CA, I had everything like you would have on a tec service call stolen, Senior Oso the Bear went dumb and AWAL, Oh and my 18+ yr GF left me.
Great CW song with a kickin beat!
All gone IDs CC 'puters, tablets, cell phones Job Doc n origial drawing, calcs etc.
Ended up after a few day of doing the dance w cabs, banks, DMV, atnt, basically living of the streets with a Sunny Barger, HA inner circle Dude and street folks my best of kin.
All good now and an enlightening experience.
Long story for another nite or around the fire pit.

We are looking forward to meeting you all. I feel as I know so many of you like bros, mates, folks, kids, mentors and co-workers.
Getting real hungry!
I'm thinking of drived out. Anyone want a lift or to convoy?
You out there Plummer ID?

Thanks for sharing and reading.

Best and Be well

Ok I am working on something for the pig roast and the people that have RSVP'ed. Would you rather the user name or real name of the adults that have RSVP'ed and their spouse. and I only have 60 that I am doing so the first 30 pairs or 60 people will get on but you have to pick it up at the pig roast. Let me know.

i think based on our first and last and only pig roast, it is nice to see the real name and the handle together.  if a spouse has no handle, parenthesize the other (husband) handle.  since we are not sure what you are doing, do as you please based on these comments.  looking forward.  hope to have the schedule done soon to confirm.  work for me and wife (Georgia) has gone crazy.   :snowball:   :)

based on the question, if it needs to be one or the other, I am fine with my user name, which happens to be my neighbor, friend and scout leader nick name.  WOW and thanks in advance for what you have planned.  i am planning on coming, my wife cannot get the time.  My work is like having a first degree relative in the hospital who is very sick (busy) and you are not sure what will happen tomorrow.  looking forward to getting away.

Actually Doc, you 'declared' just before posty, so that would make you about #35, but really you delcared in the previous thread back in aprilish?, which would make you #2 or something after the host family. I was so insecure about finding a place to stay that I booked that trailer pretty early, then you and Bill came right behind. Yes, I am very much looking forward to this and getting away for a bit.

Well, I don't want to add any stress, but I will say that I will be a sad puppy if you get hung up and can't make it. You have helped me out of too many jams and I have been looking forward to sitting around a fire or some other focal point and sipping some homemade hooch whilst we compare notes on similar lives that followed different paths but intersected in key places on alternating time schedules.

Sadly, the Sheepkeepers will not be attending this year. We were really hoping that the border would open up in time for us to come but it's not to be and we now have other plans. We will be having a family gathering where we will be able to hug for the first time our new (as of July 2020) daughter-in-law. We'll miss seeing everyone but we'll catch y'all next time. Stay safe everyone.

We can not miss that 4yold's Bday on the 7th in NC.
Can't do it all, need to be there for the step-grankids.

Oso Bear n I are bummed.
We'd rather have some pork than too sweet Bday cake.

Hope we're all able to do it again in 2023.
We look forward to the reports and Photos.
A bit of video/sound would be swell too.

I did some trout fishing here in MO a few days ago and realized I needed a few more lures  before I come to Michigan.  I picked those up at Wally World today.  I've got some streams picked out around the Harrison area that I will try.  Are there any rules I should know about as far as lures.  I'm used to using little Rapalas for trout and spinners with treble hooks.  Just want to be prepared if there's any rules about hooks.  Barbless?  No trebles?

I'd download the fishing guide from the dnr site to be sure. Your going to need a non resident license to fish here.

Bill, I looked and just as all other states seem to be doing for the last 20 years MI really soaks the non-resident for licensing fees. My state is worse than most I'm sure. MI gets $10./day or $75/yr and you can get it online, not sure if you need to print it out or can just keep it on your phone, which my state allows. I did not see the one week license, that would be more better. I found the fess here: https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-350-79119_79146_82448---,00.html and that page also has links to various regs.

I am wondering what day you plan to arrive at hidden Hill. I hadn't planned on bringing gear, but I suppose I could, just don't think I will have time unless we arrived a day earlier than we planned by driving straight through. If my wife finds something to keep her interested, I might be persuaded to tag along even if I don't fish. I have been known to spend a very enjoyable day just poking around and flipping over rocks near waterways. ;D ( I am easily amused.)
Oh and, you NEVER have enough lures, everybody knows that!

Although my wife & I have only attended one of your pig roasts it was / has been a good memory to have as part of our lives. While wanting to attend several times over the past few years, life had other plans. This year even with such a late notice / decision it looks as though we me be able to make the 30 minute drive to attend this year.

Trapper, thanks for the kind offer, I will be arriving on Wednesday and staying till Sunday so I have sadly realized "buying" a rental car is the most convenient way to get to the Pig Roast.

GAB great idea and I seriously considered Uhaul.

I looked into Private rental cars, getting a truck from Uhaul, and taking the train or bus to mid state Michigan then walking, jogging, and skipping my way to Harrison.  Uhaul was the cheapest at $350 for four days, private was next at $400, and a rental car was $436.  Getting to Uhaul or the private with luggage, a big heavy box full of fragile stuff and me was more trouble than it was worth.  The rental car place was at the airport, and a shuttle bus would provide me transportation to pick it up so the convenience sealed the deal.

I GET TO ATTEND THE PIG ROAST !!!!  See y'all there.

Good news /Bad news

Up for your lodging pleasure is a lovely studio cottage on close by Budd Lake.  Such a deal and so close to the Pig Roast too.  You will have to drive right by this incredible spot every time you travel the road to Jeff's house.

I reserved the cabin for Thursday through Sunday and now have the opportunity to share with you my reservation. No scalper pricing here, I am willing to pass on the great deal I received when I booked the comfortable cottage right on the water.  Four days away from the cares and worries of life, four days of fun and frolic, four days of Pig Roast!!!!!

Cost is only $250.  I paid a non refundable deposit of $125 and am just looking to recover some of the expenses I will be out due to changing plans.

If you are still looking for the perfect place to stay drop me a line and put your mind to rest.

I think @Crusarius (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=35059) was looking for a place to stay.

We got home from Branson about 2 and have unloaded the stuff I don't need and I put some more clean clothes in there.  Had a guy come and buy a little wood from me.  Now I'm still hooked to the camper and ready to leave in the morning.  I need to fill with fuel first thing in morning as I'm well under 1/4.  Thats what happens when I don't get fuel on the way home from Branson.

I arrived at Hidden Hills about 30 minutes ago.  I'm in site 36 for anyone else that may be arriving.  This guy bought the campground just a few months ago, so when I made my reservation he didn't own it.

I forgot to buy beer.  Dang it!  I brought 2 with me but they are warm.  Maybe the freezer will get them cold quickly.

After the first Christmas contest I threw myself into I learned that I am going to need another decade to understand Jeff's devious mind and warped sense of humor. I figured this was something like that. You never know exactly where he is going and it's even difficult to parse out where he is coming from. Just wait and eventually you will see that 'he got you ..... again'.
This should be a fun weekend. :)

Jeff wasn't joking.  My John Neeman knife has helped carve several Pig Roast Pigs.

We did not know until noon yesterday that we would be able to attend, but by then, where to stay?  No hotel rooms anywhere except in Houghton Lake and the room was $270 per night.  Some searching found a B&B in Clare for Thursday and Friday nights so we will have to leave for home Saturday evening and find a room somewhere on the road.  We will leave home tomorrow and spend one night on the road.  I didn't want to pull the fiver that far for only a weekend.  Yes, HH has WiFi.

We are looking forward to seeing some of you Friday and all of you Saturday.   move_it

MM, that's a fine meat carver for sure. How many of Bambis' relatives has it done? My USMC KaBar has done, um, so many that I've lost count. And I've only had to sharpen it with a file, once for every two deer to get it back to shaving sharp, and I LIKE sharp knives! You're less likely to be cut by one like that. ;)

If I remember correctly that is D2 steel and hardened to 62.  No deer is worthy of that knife, only Elk and PR Pigs.

That knife is the last item that John Neeman made under the John Neeman name before Autine.

well another update for us.  my wife has gone back to work fulltime.  She worked fulltime hours before but could pick and choose dates.  now there is a template and a computer that schedules her.  I wanted to leave yesterday, but spent the day fixing stuff on the truck and rental camper.  I hoped to leave today, but my wife found a way to get wed. thurs. off so she could go.  she was off today but had to trade and work today to get thurs. off.  so we will leave in the am, and get there late weds.  It is worth it, as she gets to come along.  she will bring some craft stuff.  The original plan was to spend near a week there, but it has been "whittled" away with work and life.  (to continue the knife theme).  It does take some pressure off the getting things ready part.  So Georgia will be coming now.  what crafts/hobbies/activities are the female spouses interested in?  I did not want to call them wifes as this could be confused with the Wifi at the campground!   :D :D :D

Is that "R20" on their map? I just check their site availability map and it looks like that is still open. Oh wait, you did the online reservation thing? Not sure how long that would take to go through. I just called them for ours. Tell them you are there for the P/R and there should be a discount.
Are you driving out in one shot or taking an overnight? We are leaving in the morning tomorrow. We are taking 84 to 81 to 80 to 90, to 280 around Toledo, then MI 23 north unless somebody has better suggestions or advice on problem spots.

The 5th wheel is clean, the Powerstroke is all serviced, and the SxS is ready to load. I have to make a quick trip to Canfield Ohio to pick up gear racks for the fire district as soon as the Ford dealership is done with the LOF service on the Super Duty.
I have National Night Out tonight and a Make a Wish request for a little girl this evening also. Tomorrow is getting the hay baled that I cut Sunday afternoon. Come Thursday morning I'm headed north to Spicer's in Houghton Lake then back down to Hidden Hills Campground.
That should just about do it I think 🤔.
I'm tired just thinking about it but it sure will be nice to see everyone.

I just hope that everyone gets lined out on the reservation(s), because I lost the paperwork (on my end) and had to call about 20 different places up there to find it again. Luckily they had already had me in reservation status. What a load off of my mind, & the wife too!

Now R19. Forgot to mention FF. Coming from Rome NY Thurs, 90 to 80 Toledo then up from there. Generally do what Siri says although that will change when the camper gets here.

I don't see R19 on the map, but it can't be that much of a walk in any event. Rome will give you a jump on us, but we leave in the morning tomorrow. I have modified my route a little since the earlier post based on some PM advice and ma taking 23 north but then jumping onto 96 and cutting over to 127, that is, if I don't miss the exits. :D
It is what it is, and we will get there eventually.
Dang Bill, that is one nice fish! If I hit into some good fish like that I might forget why I went there in the first place. ;D That sure would make a nice dinner with some lemon and butter.

Visiting the wonderful Dr Pole veterinary clinic is something to do if you are a fan of his TV show.  The doc is so welcoming and warm to his fans.  When I visited he sat down with all of us and just chatted like normal folks.

I did well on the Manistee.  Had a little trouble with fly only section.  I may or may not have broken the rule there.  I thought about running up to the Au Sable this morning, but decided it was too far of a drive since I only planned to fish for the morning time.  Doc Henderson and OldGreenhorn arrived here at campground around 11.

guys. I'm at General RV at the Birch Run exit of I-75 getting 4 new tires on the 5th wheel. Noticed one leaking when I pulled in to the rest area at Clio. Had cracks in the tread. Threw the spare on and found this place and pulled in and said change all 4. Better safe than sorry.

@Tacotodd (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=50744) I would think it will be late evening when you roll into here.  I left St Louis area around 7 in morning and got here at 7 local time.  Of course I had 3 stops for fuel and food.  Mileage isn't that great pulling the camper.

Thanks for a great event Jeff, Tammy and Crew!
It was great to see some folks that we've met before, as well as putting faces to names to handles of new acquaintances.
A word of acknowledgement (and Thanks) to all who supported and participated in the Door Prize event.
The Corporate Sponsors and all who donated items made it a very special time.
A special shout out to @doc henderson (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041) who made some very nice CharcaterieChaurcuterieCharkutery- "Food Display/ Serving" Boards. The different Wood Species and engraving were very unique and entertaining.
Again, thanks to all who made it such a great event! Prayers for all to have a safe journey home.

The Pig Roast is a very special event that should be attended by all Forestry Forum members, and it ain't just about the pig.  We certainly did not drive 2275 miles just to eat a pulled pork sammich.  The fellowship and closeness between the FF members can only be experienced and very inadequately described.

A very Special Thank You goes to Jeff and Tammy who put their hearts into making this event the success that it is.  In addition to Jeff & Tammy there are the worker bees; Stacy, Jeremy, Mother, Joe, as well as neighbors and friends.  It doesn't just 'happen', they make it happen.

Tammy had a gift for each attendee that had previously registered.

Oh Wow, what can I say about Howdy's door prizes that he sent.  This is the one that PatD got !!!  It joins several other 'Howdy Ceramics' that she has.  Thank You my Friend for your precious contribution and it is my Prayer that you successfully recover from your bout with this dreadful Covid.

A special Shout Out goes to Logrite who sadly were not there but still were huge contributors.  PatD won a Gift Certificate and will now have to decide what to order.

Also a Thank You to the FF Friends who attended and enjoyed the fellowship at this Special Event.  See you next time.  :)

Well I am not recovered yet and still have to off load the truck and such, but we are home and as promised I will do my best to catch y'all up a little and fill in a few thoughts to go along with the others. But first let me say it was a pretty special trip for us. (First one without kids in 35 years.) I too did not take many photos because I was too busy trying to get names, faces, states, and connections made in my head and that takes work. :D Jeff's videos will fill in some blanks, I'm sure. What a great bunch of folks to say the least.

On the drive out (which was the best and easiest long drive I have ever had) I had thought maybe @Bargemonkey changed his mind and made time to come:

But it wasn't him, wrong truck. ;D

We stopped in Toledo around dinner time and met with my wife's cousin and had a fine chicken dinner at their home. My wife had not seen him in 50 years, so that was neat. Even neater was this cottonwood tree in their yard:

(Wife used for Scale.)

We drove a little further up 23 and found a huge Cabela's, so after exploring a bit we found a motel and holed up for the night. They must have had an Asplundh convention in town because the parking lot was more than half full with their rigs. And yes, those guys filled the lobby eating continental breakfast in the morning, just like another day at the Conesville Country Store. :D

We got a full breakfast elsewhere and finished the drive up. I loved the roads, good drivers around us and 78mph all the way. We arrived at the camp, Bill was already there of course and waiting for us. Doc and Georgia arrived a little later. We wasted no time getting settled in.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that when you get two or more of us together, we are either gonna find a way to get into a little trouble or have a little fun, or perhaps both. I got a short clip of Bill working out on our campsite distraction:

VID 20210805 175929467 - YouTube (https://youtu.be/LnmFm8v1pPg)

Before long other folks started showing up: TerrficTimbers and his wife, then Magicman and Miss Pat, Doubletree Belgiums pulled in two sites away from us, then the Boss himself came on by. We had us a get together going there for a while. Enough folks that I may have missed some.

(Doc on the right, Miss Pat, Lynn (MM), and FFOTS's feet on the left, and mine in the center.)

Friday we went over to lend a hand but the Brokaw crew had everything pretty much handled. We (they) did get the pig on and got it seasoned up and browned over and seared. Jeff is shown here just doing a second coat and checking the progress.

Friday evening we came back for a fine dinner, then Saturday was the event, of course.
I was so busy bouncing from one conversation to another that I only took 2 photos. One is poor, this is the other.

The day itself was super, the weather was perfect, and a great time was enjoyed by all. The conversations, the meal, door prize fun, and everything else could not have been better. (I may put up some other thoughts on this in a separate post.)

Sunday, most folks were either gone, packing out, home, or on the road already.  Brent and his wife actually managed to leave the campground twice! (yes, there is a story there.) We headed up to the house for a final 'thank you' and found they had no power on that whole side of the lake! So we hung out in the pole barn saying our final goodbyes and thanks as well as one or two last stories. Jeff was getting ready for his escape to the UP. (They got their power back just before Jeff left with Steve.)
Pat and I headed down the road to Coleman to visit the Veteran's memorial and I found it quite moving. We spent a while walking around and reading bricks and all the other dedications, etc. The main sculpture is amazingly well done.

I also found this piece, just about 100' from the main plaza to be very nicely done.

On the drive back we stopped at Jay's sporting goods and the military surplus place next door to it, but I was a 'good boy' on both counts. ;D We never did find 'Cops and Dounuts' but I saw their billboards. Not sure what that is all about, but we will catch that next time.
Late afternoon I got a text from Jeff that we all had forgotten to bring some pork back for the folks at Hidden Hill, so Tammy ran it over and Pat and I delivered it, mission accomplished. In the process I had a chat with Joe about his woodworking and need for benches in the camp. He had a bunch of questions, so I suggested he think about joining the forum to get them all answered. :D :) Hopefully he will follow up. In the meantime, he asked that when I make our next reservation I remind him about the benches so he can order some unfinished slabs for me to deliver. ;D (Lets see, standard delivery cost is $1.00/mile, so.....)

We left at 7:45 on Monday morning and the drive home was a bit less fun. My GPS kept trying to get me to go through Canada and we took a wrong turn near Flint before I caught it, which cost us 20 minutes, then it tried it again further south (Detroit) but I wasn't buying it. So I fought with the GPS all the way home because I wanted to avoid that 5 mile back up on I80. We finally pulled in around 10:30. I had 3 beers and went to bed. For the first hour trying to sleep all I saw when I closed my eyes were two long lanes in front of me that disappeared over a distant rise and a white line ticking by.
What a great time we had! Thank you everyone.

Post by: Old Greenhorn on August 11, 2021, 10:21:50 AM
I was going to add some personal perspective in the previous post and decided against it at that time because I wanted to get normalized (in so far as is possible) before any comments because I wanted the words to come out with some coherency. These threads do get read years down the line for reference or memory jogs and I can see folks that are on the fence about attending a pig roast looking back through previous years to get a feel for it before they made a decision. I know that I did just that when I started thinking about it 3 years ago.
As this was our first PR I thought it would be my one chance to share the 'first timer's' experience. You know if you think about it, driving over 800 miles each way to sit with folks you met online in 'some kind of forum' can sound more than a little weird or even risky to most folks. I do know that some of my friends looked at me funny when I told them that "No" I had never actually met ANY of these folks. (But my friends know I do weird stuff all the time and they accepted this as just another 'thing' figuring one day it will bite me and maybe this will be that day.)
From my reading I had decided (guessed) that this was a lot like our family reunions. Folks from all over the country and sometimes international, held every other year, some of whom you don't know or never met before, but at least you are related in some way and others you know really well. Those things can sometimes get cliquey and break into smaller groups that are hard to penetrate. I was concerned about sitting in a corner with one person, or just my wife for the whole day. Worse, maybe my wife wouldn't have a good time and be reminding me it's 'time to go' all day.
Yeah well, none of that happened. As I have written previously in not so many words, it was a weekend of pure joy and relaxation. With each new person met came new introductions, conversations, subjects, knowledge, and deepened friendships and respect. The pig roast and all the other food, door prizes, music, kids playing, dog ball throwing and stuff like that became just the back drop for some really good visiting with folks. I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend, truly. You can't buy that kind of experience because there are too many critical ingredients that are very hard to find. You can't call a travel agent and 'book a trip' like that.
Some personal highlights from my perspective were first putting some faces to names and hearing their actual voices. Being able to have a free flowing conversation with a bunch of folks I had gotten to know (I thought) pretty dang well on the forum. Sitting down and getting a consultation with Lynn (MM) as a Journeyman Sawyer about a project I am contemplating was like gold for me. Spending time with Doc and Bill just shooting the breeze and maybe getting our hands on some small task working together was more fun that one might think.
I had brought a small rustic bench I made for a door prize and my wife added one of the hand printed quilted table runners she makes to the pile. I was a little concerned that my bench was not up to the standards of the master woodworkers in our group, but nobody said anything that I heard. When they awarded my wife's runner it went to Georgia (Doc's) wife who had looked at it and really wished she had one, so she was very happy. When they gave away my bench, the woman who won that let out a 'whoop' because she had her eyes on it and was extremely happy to have gotten that. That made my day even better than it already was. (bonus points!) These are small things, but they made a difference for me.
Equally interesting to me were the things I did NOT experience. Often in groups such as this there are folks who like to talk about those who are not present in critical ways. ('oh, I met him once, he is a nutcase' or 'that guy talks a good show but he really has no idea what he is doing'). I heard none of that, zip, not one word. What I did hear was just the opposite: "Oh if you ever get a chance to visit him you HAVE to stop in, he has quite the setup and is the nicest guy you'll ever meet" and things of that nature. Folks asked me about members I know personally and what their 'set ups' were like and how they do things because they wanted to know, not hear somebody knock them down. (I got asked about Bargemonkey several times and most wanted to know how it is he manages to work those hours he does and not drop dead. That's a question I am still looking for an answer to myself.)
So yes, we are all busy and have lives and on the face of it driving half way across the country (or even ALL the way) may seem like a lot for just a weekend to shake hands with people you never met before. But to get away and be with folks of a like mind (regardless of diverging political leanings) to relax and talk and share knowledge on common and not so common interests can be priceless. I do know that there were more than a few folks answering texts and taking phone calls from their shops and clients all weekend, I got 3 myself, but the world did not end because we got away for a few days.
So if you are reading this and thinking about attending, maybe I gave you some food for thought. I do know for myself, fixed income and all, it was worth every penny, every mile driven, every traffic slow down, the night in a not so great motel room, and the long 15 hour trip home. The pig roast provided food for my soul as well as food for my belly, not to mention the re-charge and inspiration.
I hope we see you at the next one!

I DO know that the next time that I go; at least 3 days earlier! It seemed as though every time (I inferred) that there are/we're pretty-party party's. I personally don't see anything wrong with that & maybe party is the wrong word; but it was like I was at a party. Fun from the time I was there until the time that I left. And I have started pre-planning for the next time a pig roast occurs! I'm THAT jazzed with the thought of it. Jeff won his little ice cream bet with OGH concerning me & my appearance, doc H still blows my mind because his appearance looks so much different than his avatar (even though he told me that it did). Meeting with & yackin with GAB was priceless (for some old dumb farm kid (inside joke concerning mine & GAB's conversation)) the fun & personal conversation with crusarius fairly late into Saturday was great. The wife & I had originally planned on staying all day Sunday, but seeing as 99.5% of attendees were going to be pooped out (including us) we decided to check out early, not penalized for it, and take a relatively slow & easy trip back home. And the said part for us, 16hrs to arrive to the PR, 26 to get home; at one fuel place we admitted to each other how beat & sleepy we were that it was safer for the ENTIRE world if we would just get some sleep right there, 3hrs later from being asleep in the cab of the truck and I felt like a new man! Right about 10min normal travel at home where there is a choice between directions to go and both are approximately the same time/miles, I had just (250yds) started one exit and suddenly EVERYONE turned on emergency flashers! Sat there about 8 hours! Oh well, considering that there was NO way back prior to our exit without becoming a MAJOR traffic accident we just sat there! But we got home with no mechanical or other problems, so I was quite happy!!!!

When you think about attending the pig roast and figure the cost and the money lost, which would you rather have years down the road?  A pile of money or a pile of memories that bring a smile to your face.  I don't know of anyone that has not had a good time at the PR.  I have been to quite a few.  One of which is WDH throwing his hat on the floor when I fooled him with a piece of wood. Fooling Danny with a piece of wood is a very rare event and took some planning. Being the nice guy he is, he let  us pig hunt on his place a few years later. Really missed him this year.
OGH hit the target.
My kids and grandkids had a great time.  Jeff and Tammy even had a nice rock pile for the little grandkids to play in. The older two said they want to come again, so that says a lot about it being great for the whole family.

Ian harvested a nice pig, too.  I missed you guys much.  I am pleased to hear that the Newton's held up the standards at the pig rendering before the pig eating.

Yup, you got him with ERC sapwood and I got him a couple of years later with Walnut sapwood.  Yes, Walnut!!!  ;D

I was talking with Marty last evening about the Pig Roast.  I jokingly made a statement about driving 2275 miles for a pulled pork sammich, and he instantly set me straight.  The Pig Roast ain't about the pig.

You (Marty) said it.
This may be an indicator of the kind of folks I normally hang out with, but I've rarely been to a gathering with 100% nice people in attendance. The Pig Roast is a very uniquely positive experience.

Sounds like a lovely time. Even though I'm a new guy maybe I'll show up at one sometime.

I've been to similar events (although usually just an afternoon or evening) where the meetups consist of random strangers with like-minded hobbies or interests and it's pretty amazing to get together and it's a really nice time. I've even hosted one a few weeks ago at my house and it went great!

I'm happy to hear this one sounds like the same deal.

Thanks everyone, looking forward to another one!

That's what's great about the FF is that we are a diverse group.  If it was all guys with sawmills and no other experience, we wouldn't get the help and inspiration that we do.  We have lots of jacks of all trades, but we also have experts in certain fields.  I had a great time and enjoyed meeting each and every one of you.

Flat blades make good chisels, while philips make good leather punch awls IF you get them screaming (cherry red) hot, then they go right through. Don't lie, we've all done it. It's easier than setting up the drill or drill press to do it.

As a lifelong Stockman, I can't remember a time that I didn't have a leather punch around, but I do use red hot Awls or Ice Picks to burn holes in Nylon Halters and Dog Collars (Take them off the animal first!).
Swiss Army knives usually come with a small awl to bore holes in leather, also....

Glad a good time was had by all in attendance.
Well, as I posted before, my grandsons graduation pig roast took precedence over the real PR in Michigan.
I did see some friends of my former son in law that I probably wont see again until my grand daughter gets hitched.
I would much rather have been there and although Ill be 85 pushing 86 next time unless I'm on the wrong side of the sod, Linda and I are planning to attend.

That's just perfect. I hope to have this contract milling job done by then and be just ready to start a week of festival work. I should have time to watch, enjoy and comment on it. I am sure you took my schedule into consideration in your planning and I think you for that. :D :D :D ;D :)
Seriously, you get it done when you get it done. We appreciate the time you put into it. Really sorry I disappointed you with your request, but I am sure the final product did not suffer for it.

No Mug in the pic; are you sure that's not a Post Card pic (JK)? Is your place right on the Escarpment? Looks like it. I have a piece of property a little east of Pickford that a guy lets me hunt; the old DNR Fire Tower foundation is on it; you can see the Mighty Mac from there.
