County Forest Liaison Ė Iron County (Mercer, WI)

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Ė Division of Forestry is currently seeking a County Forest Liaison to serve in Iron County, WI.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced forester who desires to incorporate state of the art silviculture with multiple use resource management on a large, third party certified public forest.

The Iron County Forest Liaison is primarily responsible for providing forest management services on the 174,000 acre Iron County Forest.  This position works with minimal oversight or review and assumes an independent role in representing the Department of Natural Resources interests when working with the Iron County Forestry Department.  This position is responsible for administering Wisconsinís County Forest Law, by working with county personnel and monitoring implementation of Annual Work Plan and compliance with the Iron County Forest Comprehensive Land Use 15 Year Plan.  These duties include preparing annual timber sales and forest regeneration goals.  County Forest Planning duties include advising Iron County forest staff with field operations and assisting in the forest certification process.  This position also has secondary responsibilities within the fire management program, education and outreach, and other program administration duties as required.

Successful candidates will understand county government operations and be able to work collaboratively on natural resource management issues to achieve mutual goals.  A well qualified candidate must have an SAF accredited bachelorís degree in Forestry (or equivalent as determined by the State Foresters), with a strong working knowledge of silviculture practices, and practical field forestry experience.  Applicants with experience in establishing timber sales, site preparation and reforestation techniques are highly desired.  The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with the ability to work under minimal supervision, possess excellent verbal/written communication skills, have proven strength in relationship and partnership building, and value superior customer service.

Place of Employment:             Bayfield County Forestry Department, Washburn, Wisconsin
Forest Administrator: Bayfield County is seeking a dynamic forest administrator to oversee 175,000 acres of county forest.  Applicants must hold a BA in Forestry with a minimum of four years forestry, land or conservation experience and two years supervisory experience. This is an appointed and exempt position.

Bayfield County:  Bayfield County is located on the shores of Lake Superior and has 966 inland lakes.  Bayfield County is a wonderful place to live and work.

Annual Salary:          $50,388 - $56,023 DOQ.

Forester, Department of Forestry

Starting Pay: $ 21.40/hr

Position Purpose: Assist the Forestry Department in implementing the Bayfield County Forest Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

A.        Four-year degree in Forestry from an accredited university or college of Forestry. 
B.        Experience working in Forest Management activities preferred.
C.        Knowledge of Northern Timber types desired.
D.        Experience with GIS, ESRI, ArcMap preferred.
E.         Valid driverís license and ability to obtain commercial driverís license within 2 years.
F.         Successful candidate must pass a physical examination from a county-designated physician verifying ability to meet the physical requirements of this position.
