I have the wife getting me some magnesium supplement now at the drug store. The past two days I've had cramps like never before. No caffeine at work, 32 ounces of gatorade or water every hour, three bananas daily, breakfast and lunch, pace myself, etc. It's been in the mid-90s, but I've worked in the heat before. :D Hopefully, these will help me.

The keeper of knowledge just shared with me, that enough potassium intake, can actually deplete magnesium in your system. So the sports drink alone, while its helping on one side, its tearing down the other.

I too have problems with muscle cramping. Since I am around a lot of blacksmithing and striking  I get hot. This past weekend was great for demonstrations but I felt myself going down. A doctor type fellow was quite concerned and came by to check on me. I explained that the supp. Phosphorus I take in pill form requires about 5 or 6 to equal one banana. Some peeps get alarmed to see someone take a few tablet at one time until they find out how little medicine is in those caplets! Generally the supp phos works but pickle juice will stop a cramp in seconds! SO will a small packet of mustard...like you put on the hotdogs from those squeeze packs.

I have not heard about the mag supp so I will be trying it out too. Here in Mississippi it has been rather warm lately and I have been totally wet from sweat every day. Peeing reductions show that more fluid is going out the skin than the bladder. And I just had a blood workup this week to make sure nothing else was happening.

SO now I have something else to quirk about other than scheduling the knee replacement. Where is the time?

Read this about epson salt and how it helps replinish magnesium when you bathe in it. Sounds like snake oil if it does all they say it will. http://www.saltworks.us/salt_info/epsom-uses-benefits.asp

One time at a training seminar had a instructor tell the class his knees were bad from jumping out of helicopters in the army. Said only relief he could get was to rub WD 40 on his knees. I wanted to call B/S and tell him he was dumber than a coal bucket but he was paying for dinner.

Always heard the body will crave what it needs. Have been on a low sodium diet due to BP. Last night opened the fridge and saw some dill pickle slices (high sodium) craved them so ate about 5 with a swig of the juice.

Im not sure what the rules on posting links is ( I got in trouble in the past, and was told to read the rules, but I have yet to locate them, but this is too much to post here). This is well written in laymen's terms, if youre having cramps, this is probably worth your time to read, FWIW.

I see that now, thank you, it really "sticks out", and is hiding in plain sight. Guess I will have to go have a read.

Shame on me!
I quoted using phosphorus instead of potassium. I was thinking about those bags of ferterlizer I had just unloaded. And to think I m supposed to be an educated man....Ha.

But pickle juice and mustard ...along with potassium...are known to releive muscle cramps. Other things may help too.

It may have been DMSO, a by-product of making paper. At once touted as an arthritic pain reliever, and now is discussed as a carrier for cancer treatments.

Nope. He definetly said WD 40 cause I wondered about the smell.

WD40 has DMSO in it. DMSO is a very small particled solvent and penetrates cell walls. It does relieve joint pain. Can't remember why it does. Bad thing about using WD40 is all the other stuff that the DMSO carries in with it. The fact that it can penetrate into cells is probably why it is being considered as a transporter for cancer drugs.

I don't think I would want to use WD-40 if it penetrates cell walls and has all this other stuff in it too-- an industrial product never intended for human consumption or absorbtion. But if you could get the DMSO in some better form. . . .

Used to be able to get it at the feed store. Don't know if you can any more.

Just looked it up. You can get it online for $8 a pint. Should be able to get it at the feed store still.

I understand it comes in several industrial cleaners... but don't know that for certain.

Google DMSO and many hits come up, of creams, gels, and other forms.

I went to the Doctor middle of July for a routine checkup.  I asked him to do a blood work up to check all my levels for anything that might cause cramps.  Everything came back in the medium to medium high range except for potassium.  It came back in the high range and I was expecting that as I'm taking a supplement to help with cramps.  It does seem to provide some small relief.

At that time I started to take magnesium because you guys were posting such good results.  This week I quit taking it because it didn't help my cramps at all.

At this point, I think I'm in the group that nobody knows why we get them.  Guess I'll grin and bear it.

I drink a V-8 juice every day. If I get hit with cramps in the middle of the night a V-8 will help kick it out.

Few years ago I ended up in ER with chest pains in the middle of the night that wouldn't let up.  Ended up being a cramp, lack of potassium.  Take one pill, morning and evening and haven't had the problem since.

Don't attribute irritating behavior to malevolence when mere stupidity will suffice as an explanation.

Ron Wenrich

I've had cramps for the past 40 years.   The worst one I had one night that actually gave me a black and blue mark.  I have had them in my hands, arms, legs, feet, chest and about any other spot.

I've tried all the supplements, but the best supplement I have found is water.  For me, I have to drink a lot of water to keep the cramping at bay.  If I'm getting cramps, its usually from dehydration.

Another thing that has helped me is going to a physical therapist.  My guy uses acupressure where he finds points that the muscle is in spasm.  You would be surprised how many they can find.  He works them out and that seems to help.  I go about once a month.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I get cramps in my calf muscles and feet all too often.

I've got to find out if there would be an issue with potasium causing problems with any of my regular meds!
