edger mandrel speed

I bought a old frick gang edger and I need to know what the mandrel speed need to be. I think it has 12" saws maybe 14" inserted tooth. With be powered by a 18hp gasser (for now).

Try 1800 rpm. That's the recommended  speed for my chase with 14" saws. [ mine is running at 2000]

The speed recommended in the Frick catalog is 1700 RPM. The feed speed is 100 feet per minute.

That's moving. Might need to slow it down for 18 hp gas. My ED26 WoodMizer is 80 fpm with 26 hp diesel. The governor will open up with two blades in two inch oak, but it'll do it.

Thanks guys. Thats right what I figgered but weren't sure.
18hp ain't as much as I wanted but its what I could afford.  It'll do for now, til I get a 35-40hp diesel to run it and convert it to hyd variable speed feed.

I'm doing fine with 14 hp. 2" oak no problem. Just got to keep the belts tight.

You might not be in as much of a hurry either. Plus my inserted tooth saws pull a fair bit wider kerf than the set tooth saws Belsaw used.

You might not be in as much of a hurry either. Plus my inserted tooth saws pull a fair bit wider kerf than the set tooth saws Belsaw used.

I don't have the inserted tooth but I do have carbide wide tips.
But yes my saw is not what I would call fast...
