Well I figured it is time to let y'all in on the dates and the plan. The main dates for this project is April 19th and 20th. For those that want to come in a day or two early that is fine and dandy. I'll be running a sawmill business all week, so if someone wants to come for the whole week and get put to work that's okay too. There is no telling what orders will be getting done and sent out.
My main plan is the same as the original plan of 2023. Of course once that big log showed up then all those plans went out the window. We will demo sawing some pine and cypress on Friday and a quarter sawing demo on Saturday (in memory of Danny). When we can fit it in, we will mix in running the planers some, the Slabmizer, and the Lucas if some folks want. If there is enough interest in a specific subject then we will try to get someone with experience to teach it.
We will need to keep a head count as we go and what days folks are coming so as to have enough food for those days. If it looks like we are going to run low then someone can jump in a truck and run to the store and get it. Caveman has generously offered to bring lunch for folks on Thursday. We normally have salad and spaghetti that evening. Do a pizza run for lunch on Friday with hamburgers and hotdogs that evening. Saturday will have the famous Julio chicken with fixings for lunch and leftovers that evening.
There are lots of motels at the intersection of Interstate 16 and Hwy 441/319. It is exit 51 on the interstate and right at 6 miles from my place. There is some campgrounds not to far from me, with a new one going in now on the 441 bypass in Dublin, GA. Don't know if it will be finished by then. I don't mind if a few campers just park here as long as we can put them somewhere out of the way of operations. Just like in years past let's please keep this off of Facebook and other social media until the event. Thanks.
When you commit to come please add what number you are and if you are bringing something to pitch in. I make #1.

Concerning your statement: "Of course once that big log showed up then all those plans went out the window".
I think they were merely side tracked. I enjoyed the big log episode. It's not everyday that you get to see how others tackle a challenge. You did very well.
Mike & I are planning on attending so I guess we will be #4 & #5.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Gerald
I'll be there, makes me #6
I'll take spot #7.
Georgia and I will be 8 and 9. of course it can always fall apart given my work, but come hell or high water, we will try. :snowball:
Jake, I'm planning to attend and hopefully can arrive a few days early. Sign me up for #10.
Scott
Teea and I will plan on being there. # 11 and 12.
Thanking you in advance for another "Project" Jake.
I woke up at 4 this morning, thinking as always, my most important thoughts....we should be hearing about the Sawing project soon...
Here it is.
Cathy and I are in #13+14
Thanks Jake!
JMoore and I will plan to be there, #15 and #16.
The dates are on our calendar but no commitment yet.
This one is going to be easy with only 16 folks. :D

Make it 18, Dick and Jane.
Call me very likely (but not 100% certain) #19. I want to get through the next few winter months before I make any reservations.
Its pretty early for me to commit to anything much past eatin for a couple three months yet.
Like several others, I have it on my calendar but just a bit early to make reservations. However, if there is any way possible, I'll be there. I especially want to meet and talk to lots of y'all.
Joy and Arnie, #'s 20 and 21.
So looking forward to it, Jake. Thank you sir!!!!

Anyone from New England area heading down ?
TroyC, whom I know in real life outside the forum, graciously invited me so I plan to attend so that looks like that makes me #44.
Do we get jerseys with our numbers? 😄
I'm from north Georgia.
Regretfully, I'm going to have to withdraw.
Laureen is scheduled to do some Veterinary Missionary work on an Indian reservation in April, and her dates gone from the farm conflict with the Sawmiller's event. With her mother's progressing Alzheimer's (she lives here on the farm), it's just not a good idea for both of us to be gone for several days at the same time.
She had been aware of the dates of Jake's get-together, but apparently mis-entered them into her calendar and did not realize that there was a schedule conflict until last night - after she had bought her airfare. She volunteered to cancel, but IMO the volunteer work that she is doing is more important in the bigger scheme of things than my enjoying time with friends.
Man, this sucks! I know that everybody will have a great time; if Jake hosts this again next year I'll definitely attend.
Scott
I hate that you will not be able to attend. You always bring a lot to the table. I admire you for doing what is right for your family. Maybe we can convince ole Jake to have another and you can make it to that one.

We're getting close. If you are planning on bringing something to pitch in please post it on here so we don't get 30 folks bringing paper plates. The way it keeps raining every few days it might be wise to bring some rain gear too. Hoping for good weather though. Just a short list of things others have brought in the past.
Plates
Plastic ware
Chips
Drinks
Coconut cream pie (hint MM) food1
Napkins
Cups
BBQ (hint YH)
and about anything else you can think of that would contribute.
Like always there will be a Donation can floating around if that is your preferred method of pitching in.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Potato Casseroles, Pecan and other Pies.
I guess I will be #49.
I'll bring paper towels, plastic knives, forks, & spoons.
Richard
I'll plan to bring some taters, some pork product and some beans along with some waters.
I'll bring plates and bowls.
for now you can count on universal paper goods. (cash). may bring other stuff too.
Hi y'all. If it's not too late for a noobie sawyer / experienced furniture maker to join in, I'd love to come along and meet many of you. I'm happy to donate funds and/or supplies - whatever is needed. Unfortunately, it will just be me (Greg). My wife is having back issues and can't handle the long ride. Friday/Saturday for sure.
Edit to follow instructions : I think I'll be #50! I'll bring money for donating to the cause, and I'm happy to run errands when I get there. If something specific is needed, just let me know. :)
It's Project tradition that we bring award winning Alabama BBQ from Tennessee, so no worries there, we will bring a mess of it.
Mmmm mr Bishop's ribs from Tuscaloosa. My dad and I would stop in to Dreamland back in the 80s. Great memories :)
Count me in and I will bring tables and chairs. Adam will be with me so that will make 51 & 52. We can also brings some plates and cups for the meals. Really looking forward to this year! Always enjoy hearing some of the stories at this gathering. The fireside chats get rather interesting.
We will be down Thursday afternoon.

If this means you're cooking/grilling, I make a good helper - I'm used to serving crowds. I'll find you and see if you need a hand :)
Thanks for the offer, there is always a grill of something going at the Project.
We have a local guy from North Alabama but moved to Tennessee (about 10 miles) that makes really good BBQ, we've been eating it for decades it's that good. So we always bring a cooler of it for an easy meal.
As far as grilling, Jake always ends up grilling up a big wad of hamburgers or something on his mega cooker. A couple years ago we did 60? chickens or chicken halves, I don't remember. It was all racks full and the most I'd ever done, it was a little comical when I set the Kingsford bag on fire and threw it on the ground, and scared enough people about asking what temp chicken was done at that I ended up being magically handed not one, but two meat thermometers when I told folks I learned to grill watching Discovery Channel and was pretty sure chicken was done when the meat was just turning pink at medium rare. ffcheesy ffcheesy
That was funny, and all of a sudden I had a lot of supervision! Nobody could tell if I was being a smart aleck or not, I even pulled out the phone and said I found a website that said smoked chicken was done at 130F. ffcheesy
Anyway, these projects are a lot of fun, an we look forward to coming every year.
After the excellent event (my first) in 2023, I was wondering about this year. Stopped by TroyC's place a month or so ago and he filled me in, so I'm going to be #53.
Looking forward to another day in the beautiful central GA hospitality shown by Jake, being surrounded by good folks learning an art using one of the best renewable resources available.
Having scrolled through Bruno's thread about wanting to move south it is probably not a good idea for me to bring Yankee Pot Roast.
As most that have been can confirm, we don't turn down any offers to help. We have a Grill Masters, and Grill Nonmasters, but we all pitch in and do what is needed. Vic and some of the other ladies will have the kitchen jumping and all sorts of good food coming out of it. It all runs like smooth chaos. ffcheesy
If you go and watch the videos of the project, that some have posted over the years it will give the new comers a better idea of the happenings. Or you can go search for past projects on here, in the sawmilling board.
Thank You Jeff.
I will be bringing some "Mystery Wood".
What about the Purple Drank :uhoh: ??

If you could add Brandon Stroud & Keith Stroud to the list. We will be there the 18th (possibly), 19th, and 20th for sure. We're willing to bring whatever is needed to be brought. We've been looking forward to this for quite some time!

I'll be bringing a buddy with me. Got no idea how many people that makes now.
Sure is nice of Jake to put these on.
Getting close now...I sure would like to make it one of these years if these keep going. Retirement is right on the horizon, so maybe soon...
Got room for one more? Add me to the list. WV Sawmiller (Howard Green).
I have some very disappointing news, to me for sure, you guys maybe not.
We will not be able to make the Project.
I'm really going to miss see all the people from the FF.
Stephen sorry you cannot make it, Howard glad you can. we could not last year and were very disappointed. Howard, I assume you heard I might do a bench demo, so you decided to be there! ffcool ffcheesy  :usa:
Doc,
I'll bring extra and I have a piece of mystery wood.
Maybe you can learn me how to post pictures like you do.
Well I made my apologies to Jake a month or so ago, but I will not be there this year. I had such a great time last year that I knew I had to be at the next one but stuff happens and it just wasn't working out for me no how. I'll leave out the excuses, they don't matter now. But I will say that I will miss all the guys and gals at the project much more than they will mid me. It actually hurts me a bunch not to be there, we had such a fine time last year and the learning and networking for me was pure gold. I know you folks will all have a great time and I wish very badly to be there, but I have to take care of business here.
One note I will add is that now you have to get one of those fancy drivers licenses that allows you to get a plane ticket and fly. I don't have one, can't find my birth certificate, and they make everything a huge hassle that I have to Prove I am a citizen. Nonsense, if you ask my. But that's not the reason I am stuck here, just a contributing factor. Mebbe next year I will find a partner to drive down with and share the gas and lodging, take in some sights along the way.
But I wish for all of you half as good a time as I had last year, and that will put y'all in a fine mood. An exceptional gathering for sure.
It is always good to see you Tom. Will have to make it next time.
Tom.
If you have a passport you may be able to use that to get a Federal DL. I don't know if it even had to be a current passport. I used my passport to get mine. Good luck. If you don't find it I sure hope you don't get deported back to Iceland or Italy or such. :uhoh:
I thought I was screwed, but a google search says enhanced for domestic flights is not required until July of 2025
I am reading May 7, 2025. LINK (https://www.usa.gov/real-id)
My current DL that expires in 2028 has the star in the top right corner. PatD's DL also has the star.
Yeah, I got that and the little flag showing veteran IIRC. I think it costs $10 more for the federal DL.
I plan on a demo showing the equipment I use and how I use it on my benches. I plan to bring my tenon cutter, my modified radial drill press and my tenon cutting jig. I will have some parts made so it goes fast. I also plan on an interactive talk on first aid for logger/sawyers. I will follow some of the stop the bleed info. some of this is mass shooting, and I will prob. not spend a ton on that. this talk can go whatever direction the mob group wants. ffcheesy
We will bring a meat and cheese board (charcuterie) with fixings as well chips and salsa/guac.
Sorry to hear some of you can not make it. We will do our best to carry on and tell you all about it.
See the rest of you next week!!!! ffcool

Well, I hate to add to the cancellation list but we won't be able to come to the project this year.
Some health issues can't be ignored, but I sure was tempted.
We've been to five Projects since 2014 and they just seem to get better every year. Last year, Jake even had a play buddy named Chief waiting to meet our red hound Maddie. What a host!
The Project date usually overlaps with Teea's birthday, so now I have to puzzle out what to replace a one-of-a-kind party with. Not an easy thing!
Best wishes from up in Manitoba for good weather and great times.
I hate to see that some are not going to be able to make it. I understand that things come up and stuff happens.
The weather is looking pretty good for this next week. Upper 70s to mid 80s all week and very low chance of rain. Robert bring your sunscreen.
We'll have to raise a toast next weekend to all the Forum friends who can't be there!

We will talk about first aid and gear it to things that could happen to us. bad cuts, bleeding, shock, head injury, crush injury. anything else you may want to ask; I can make up an answer for. I plan to show how I make benches. I will prep stuff that is straight forward and show how I try to make rustic benches with some symmetry, so they look like things were done on purpose. specifically, I will show and answer questions about equipment and techniques for tenon and mortices and the angles used. glue up and finish. I will likely bring my jigs and Japanese saw and cut the legs by hand since Howard, and I go round and round (all in fun) about this.
Good news Doc. My buddy Harold was insisting on my coming home for a stop the bleed class tomorrow, as he does not like it that I spend so much time up here by myself doing things that could be the last thing I do. I was able to blow him off and stay here one more day because I said I would be attending yours and that was acceptable to him.

Revised travel, I will arrive Thursday morning.
anyone is welcome to take the stop the bleed course. I tried but could not get free give away tourniquets. often there is money in the form of grants, and I have a few sources. A cat style is what we will train on but will talk about scout style improve as well. We will not focus on active shooter, but the videos are free to anyone, so feel free to view those on your own, before or after. I am not sure about wifi at Jakes, but you can use data at the project as needed. i may bring a screen to follow the course materials but may just print stuff out instead. I work Monday and Tuesday and hope to be ready to leave Wednesday am to arrive Thursday afternoon. I will bring my stuff for benches so you can look, hold and use them if you want. I will have some stuff prepped so it goes faster, but the key things I do differently will be demonstrated. You will get a certificate for the stop the bleed. It may be handwritten that day or sent later by email. we could print them there, but I don't want to bring a bunch of equipment that might take away from the joy I will get from teaching. I may bring stuff for a fire-starting demo, but that seems counterintuitive at a sawmill, so that will depend on Jakes comfort level and time, conditions. i have no problem with video, as long as the person doing it can also pay attention if they want the certificate. If you or a spouse is one who gets nervous taking these courses, the focus is on getting as many people trained as possible. So, reassure anyone who is worried, the course will be informative and friendly. I reserve the right to pick on Howard, should the need or opportunity arise. ffsmiley If one of the video experts can record this, we might be able to list the video for those who cannot attend. See you all there. :usa:
Doc,
If the legs on the screen aren't level we can put them on Jake's mill and fix them. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy
Doc, who are you going to get to bleed so you can show how to do it? ffcheesy
Updated weather is 20% for rain on Friday and 30% on Sat. Temps will still be close to the same. Might be overcast on Sat. Let's get to the point. I don't think they know.
Doc, i am looking forward to your presentations. We have a medical emergency bag at the mill and Adam, my son-in-law is an ex-fireman. I hope we never have to use this stuff but it is nice to know we have it just in case.
We are going to leave Carrollton, just after lunch so we will be arriving sometime in the late afternoon. I'll have enough tables and chairs for 80 people unless you think we need more Jake.
Ya'll have a great week!
I don't think we will need more than that. I have a few tables and there are others that are bringing some too.
Peter. I may need a volunteer. ffwave

--------------------------
I have the weather station that is within a mile of Jake's place bookmarked and from where i sit I think you folks are in fine shape with the Forecast Jake just listed, plus those temps! Holy cow, upper 80's won't be seen around here for a while yet. If I were packing now (after I made sure I removed any weapons I forgot about from my suitcase) I would be throwing in a pair of shorts and a tank top. Last year I burned all the skin off the tops of my ears which hadn't happened since my firefighting days. :wink_2:
I'll surely be missing all you folks and wishing the best for y'all. Doc's talks and missing the golden opportunity to heckle him (just a little) and also meet more of the fine FF family. Being able to spend time with folks like Andries, Stephen, Howard, Doc, Dennis, Jake, Robert, and dozens of others will really leave a hole in little world. I had a wonderful time last year, and for those who are attending their first project, all I can say is 'hang one and take notes'. ffcheesy
Tom,
Thanks for your consideration! With friends like you ...
I can see how this is going to go:
Doc: "First we'll slice the brachial artery with something sharp but jagged,"
Jake: "Here's an old rusted broken band."
GAB: "Here, let me help. How's that?"
Doc: "Yes, that's flowing nicely. Note how the blood spurts every time his heart beats"
Nathan: " Y'all move back so I can get a good video of it."
Doc: "Okay, now its time for a tourniquet. Huh? I'd have sworn I replaced that tourniquet the last time I used one. Honey, have you seen my tourniquet?"
Georgia: "Oh yeah. I used it to the hang that nice basket of dahlias on the front porch just before we left Kansas. It worked really good and I'd like to thank you again for them. You know how much I love them."
Doc: "Oh you're very welcome. You know I love doing little things like that for you. You work so hard and help so many people all the time."
Howard: "Any day now!"
Robert" "The BBQ is ready. Y'all come grab your plate."
Doc: "Okay guy's we'll resume training right after lunch."
Howard: "Be sure to save me a sandwich."
Caveman: "That looks like it hurts and it may be a while. Here. Take a couple of aspirins."

Well I thought I could but after that sentence I find myself somewhat confused. ffcheesy ffsmiley :wink_2:
I'm sure it will go fine Howard, just relax, breath slow and keep the ol' heartrate down. I am certain Doc will have you covered. He can always use some steel banding to improvise.
Yeah, Doc will have me covered. With dirt!
Saw my friend on Sunday the custom fishing rod builder. He's going let me borrow a couple of his rods (that I've cut lumber for) to bring along to show at the project. (The one on this magazine cover is one he made). fishin-smiley

The guy who taught our wilderness survival courses had a very, very reassuring attitude.
"Y'know boys,
all bleeding stops, it's just a matter of time."
Great
coffin bedside manner !
Andries,
I heard that in Bagram, Afghanistan from a Navy Captain who was a dentist serving there. He quoted it as:
"All bleeding stops. The goal of the medical personnel is to stop the bleeding before the heart stops beating." :uhoh:
Our best teacher was Major David Fraser, Artillery, Shilo, MB.
He spent a lot of his overseas time in the mid-East as well.
Could be that 'military-grade' humour that us civilians hear so much about?
.
Seeing as how you may be the 'patient' at Doc's presentation at The PrOject, have you checked his bona fides? Or did he swear to a different Hippocratic oath?
Just sayin' . . . .
He said something that sounded like a "Hypocritical Oath" or something like that so he should be good to go.
Yes, military (and Police, Doctors, Firemen, etc.) tend to use a lot of dark humor. In some cases its all that keeps you almost sane.
Along the lines of the hangman with the very soft rope, yup got it!
My son is a LEO so gallows humour is in effect every day.
.
Say, I saw you making a bench last year at the PrOject. (yeah, spelled that right, Robert)
The legs were levelled on Jake's mill. To a fine level of level-ness.
Got photos and Nathan made a fine video, so it's true.
Was there a post where Doc is going to use a Japanese pull saw?
Do you think Doc's legs will be as level as your bench legs were?
You may want to keep an eye on them/him for us.
There's braggin' rights at stake here - seems the gauntlet has been thrown to the ground . . .
Last year I was watching them set up the infamous bench-leg-leveling demo on Jake's mill. They wanted me to go find Jake and check if it was OK for them to run it. I asked him and he said: "Go ahead, they ain't gonna wreck nothin' I ain't already wrecked before!" ffcheesy
About all I know about first aid I learned from Ricky Bobby and the knife scene in the hospital. As far as I can tell, if you insert knife into a spurting artery upstream of the geyser, then that will stop the bleeding. A second knife also helps pry out the first one.
By the way, not only am I bringing to Georgia the best BBQ in Alabama from a guy in Tennessee, I'm also bringing Ethiopian blend gourmet Montana coffee from a local sawmiller's son who makes it in Tennessee.
Oh MY! there is SO much material to work with here. :wink_2: But I am pretty tired tonight,
First, Howard, not to worry, as I used to tell all my students, whether it was basic first aid, wilderness first aid, or front line EMS. "All bleeding stops...eventually." The reactions varied depending on the skill level, EVERY time and they were predictable. The first aiders sighed in relief, thinking they wouldn't ever have to worry about it then, The WFA folks were confused, and the EMS folks were not comforted at all. ffcheesy ffcheesy
Yes, dark humor. I have been told back in the day that I went over the top from time to time and should think about what I said a little more carefully. I never understood the issue at all. There was that one time at a larger Auto Accident that I walked up tot a group of LEO's and said "Hey guys, it's looks like traffic is pretty much under control here, do you think a few of you could lend us a hand trying to find this fellas arm? It's the left one he's missing." I was told in the debriefing that was not funny, and I didn't think it was either, but we kind of needed to find his arm. (We did.)
I also never brought my 'work' home, but my wife and I had a sort of a code. She would ask 'how was that call?' and If I said "the patient was very cooperative', she knew that meant he/she was either DOA or soon after our arrival. It kept the kids from knowing what I was doing when I went out.
------------------------
Now as far as this 'leg leveling showdown' which in fact has been 'a-brewin' here for nearly 5 years, You could call it "The great bench leg showdown of '24". I have a prediction. Doc's (bench) legs will either be level or have a slight wobble, Howards legs will be the same (as well as his bench legs). Wood moves and plopping a becnh down on a concrete floor covered with sawdust, dirt, chips, and whatever and pronouncing it "LEVEL" is never gonna solve the dispute. This will go on for a long time and never get resolved. There are still folks who believe the earth is flat and they won't let it go. My personal belief is that noting with 4 legs will EVER sit flat except for a few seconds at a time and most folks are sleeping during those seconds.
DANG, I really wish I didn't have to miss this one. You folks all have yourself a big blast and eat a little chicken and have a beer for me. Enjoy the weekend, these things are pretty special and rare.
Robert,
Now you opened another flood gate. My wife and our adult daughter visited Ethiopia in December 2010. They were very big on their coffee ceremonies and such. I don't drink coffee but my wife drinks a pot a day and grew up not 50 miles from where you live now. The travel agency gave her a couple bags of premiere Ethiopian coffee to bring home. She tried it then gave it to a friend who also loves coffee. Both agreed it tasted like dirt. (So you coffee drinkers at Jakes - be careful.)
I could not say much for Ethiopian cuisine either, I liked Tibbis (??) - braised spicy meat pieces and I could, and did, eat it every meal for nearly 3 weeks but my wife and daughter did not rave over it. At every lunch or dinner they each ordered 2 complete meals in hopes one would be edible. Fortunately meals there only cost 203 dollars each so it was no big financial strain.
This is pretty good stuff, and but I've never tasted Ethiopian dirt! Sounds like we will need to have a "taste off". Which coffee is the Signature Blend, which coffee is the Ethiopian blend, and which ones is Jake's Dirt!
My turn OG Tom; DANG I hate to be missing this PrOject.
A lot of high grade rib poking.
.
On the coffee thing.
There's got to be an organic chemist in the gathering that could pre-test the dirt for uric acid donations from Chief, the resident mill dawg.
Wouldn't do for Chief to win the blind taste test.
Chip wouldn't stand for that!
I would like to take a moment to reiterate that it was decided at a Project by a team of unqualified experts, that Michigan Maple Syrup is indisputably better than Vermont Maple Syrup..
Most of my dirt has a little sawdust in it. This will also help you get your daily fiber in.
I'm plugging away gents. Trying to get everything ready for when it all begins. No prayer of getting it all done. So what isn't done, won't be done and won't bother me for a second. Y'all will just have to deal with it the way it is.
@Jeff I don't about them but our controller here brings in syrup that his family makes and to me it is the best I've every had, full flavored and not too sweet.
Jake
I'll pass on the dirt, I ate enough in my rations during exercises and I'm pretty sure some of it contained moose or deer urine!
I'll bring a couple of simple crates and a bluebird house to discuss salvage, uses of leftover scraps and such or more options with your lumber. I may even knock together a raised bed planter to throw in the truck.
Update to Scogar #35
Will be there on the evening of the 18th through the 20th. No idea what to bring so will bring money for provisions
Update on Greg (Mr Buck) #45: A good friend was just diagnosed with Lymphoma and needs my help. Unfortunately I won't be able to come this year. My apologies for the late notice. If you're a praying person, please say a prayer for my friend Brian. We'd appreciate it very much. I hope y'all have a great time!
Safe travels for y'all headin' down to Georgia, see ya there! move_it
Wow, it's Wednesday of PrOject week already, I had lost track I am so busy. I will try o continue to stay busy rather than spend time feeling sorry I am not in Rentz. Looks like the weather should be ok, but have some rain gear just in case, those temps there are averaging about 20° higher than here already.
Be sure to document any 'best of' comparisons because if they is not pictures or video, it never happened and will be argued about here for years. We need proof.
Seriously I am really going to miss being there and I wish you all the best. I may even try to sneak in a phone call during the festivities to see how things are going. That will either make me feel better, or worse. But I wish you all a very fun-filled weekend of fellowship, camaraderie, and know sharing.
On my long list of things to do is make some simple Rustic benches for shows, so maybe I will time that to correlate to the same thing at the project.
All the best wishes to ALL of you, even Howard. Safe travels, and good times to you all.
Y'all have fun!
just about loaded up. too tired to get it all done after work last pm. was hoping to get there midafternoon, Thursday, but I guess we will get there when we do. see you all soon. sorry not everyone who wanted to go can be there. Doc.
I'm hoping for fair weather and smooth sailing getting there for everyone. Safe travels! WOC
Envy those who can make it. Have a great time.
Is what it is.
Hey there Rob, WOC, I was thinking that your passion for fishing was going to miss out.
Did you notice that Resonator is bringing handmade custom rods all the way from Wisconsin?
See what happens when guys like Tom, you and I miss a Project? smiley_thumbsdown
Those of you who chimed in today will be missed, y'all brought a lot of knowledge and great fellowship to previous prOjects. I started organizing items to go yesterday and will start loading the truck later this afternoon. JMoore will meet me here for our departure at 4 a.m. tomorrow.
I'm headed down tomorrow with a stop in Charlotte to make a delivery from my son to my daughter then I'll head for Dublin for a late afternoon/early evening (I hope) arrival.
I saw a comment from Bruno about upsell items and it got me to thinking about items we may salvage during sawing or processing or simple items we can make and upsell so I talked to/cleared it with Jake and plan to bring down a handful of items I salvage during sawing or simple items I make and sell to help market my wood. I'd love to talk with others about similar items they salvage or convert to another product to sell.
If you have small items or pictures of such please bring them if not inconvenient and we'll pick each other's brains for ways to save or make money on items we often waste.
See you Friday (If I don't get lost).
Quote from: doc henderson on April 13, 2024, 12:58:15 PMWe will talk about first aid and gear it to things that could happen to us. bad cuts, bleeding, shock, head injury, crush injury. anything else you may want to ask; I can make up an answer for.
DOC:
If you are 30 to 40 feet from a white wall and the colors are changing what does it mean?
I curious to hear your answer to that scenario.
I'm sure going to miss y'all, but know that it will be a great event.
Enjoy!

Took out mid morning. First stretch was 80 miles on the world famous Arkansas Pig Trail. Two lanes through the Ozark mountains with lots of road work due to recent slides.
Camped out now in the parking lot of the Jasper Alabama Walmart where I'll spend the night. Plan on showing up mid afternoon tomorrow. Can't wait!!!!
This is Ray Edge and i will be attending plus 1
GAB
Maybe have a genetic mutation called tetrachromacy? Or seeing purple in brown paint? ffcheesy
Larry you might play heck getting back out of here with that truck. Especially if it's a stick shift. I might steal it.
Heading out this morning, for those not able to make it don't worry, I will have a few videos up by early next week on what went down.

Great!!! I heard the last guy signing up got to volunteer for Doc's "Stop the Bleed" class and I was getting really worried. ffcheesy See you there.
Sorry to add to the cancellation list but looks like I won't be able to attend. I have a Guard deployment starting 4/21 and getting up there and back in time is just too close.
It was a great pleasure to meet you all last year and I'll be looking forward to seeing you next year!
May everyone be in good health and safe travels.

Made it to Dublin. Somewhere between here and Charlotte I lost a piece of trim off my tailgate. I am pretty sure I will find it when I retrace that 260 mile stretch through all these back roads in S. Ga. Of course the other drivers may be upset about me driving the wrong way in their lane, especially that stretch of I-77 between Charlotte and Columbia. Actually I think it was there when I stopped at the GA Welcome Center on I-20.
Either that or I might have to start checking the junkyards.

We should be there in a couple of hours ffcool ffcool
I just noticed only 11 people logged on, so it will be sorta lonesome here for a while. :wink_2:
My wish is for fun and safe travel for all. ffwave
Yeah, it will be lonely, but on the other hand we can talk about them when they are not paying attention. ffcheesy
My spies tell me they have already run the Lucas Mill and done a RRQS demo, tow things I wanted to see so I hope there is video.
Yeah, we'd all like to be there, but OTOH I just had a fella leave my driveway after stuffing a couple of SGU's in my hand, so there is that. :wink_2:
That was nice of Robert to post that short YouTube.
It looks so nice and green down there, mostly because there's blowing snow and a nasty cold wind from the North outside my window.
It'd be nice to be down there just for the weather.
Tom, have you noticed that Robert is referring to it as a "convention", rather than a 'PrOject'?
So, in the spirit of talking about him while he isn't looking, do you think he's getting sensitive about some glaciated ribbing over his Southern drawl?
I'm not certain, but that video might have been last year. Agreed the weather would be a great morale boost, I saw a photo which showed some folks in shorts and t-shirts (grits belt folks, likely) and it made me jealous. I won't have shorts on until late June, early July. We had snotty drizzle all day with cold overtones. Full time shop fire to keep the heat up.
Yes, I think Robert, being the highly educated and vastly experienced person he is is making an attempt to minimize or mitigate any regional disparities with verbal comprehension. ffcheesy
But sometimes he does tawk funny, then again, sometimes you do too. ffcheesy I seem to be the only normal one. :wink_2:
I did see a few texted photos today and I was gonna call down there around lunch time, but I kept myself real busy all day and I figured i will bother somebody down there tomorrow when there is a bigger crowd.

I am trying picture posting as Jeff described. Looks to work but it did in my last attempt. We will see if this sticks this time.
Great time, great people, great classes. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow if I don't get my eye drops and Gorilla glue I bought at the dollar store next to the hotel while ago mixed up. I bought the glue to fix the down key on my lap top which popped off and eye drops for old tired eyes. If I'm not there in the morning you know what happened.
Good thing you can go back for remedial training this morning Howard, ffcheesy Not to worry I am certain you will get it yet. (Remember to take notes as if it were a vacation week in Cameroon.)
Sorry about your arrow key, you have to be very light handed with that gorilla glue, once its on there you are done.
Every body have a great day today! Geez, only 87° for a high today? ffcheesy
One thing that occurred to me Andries is that with so many folks at the PrOject, I have a lot more time on my hands to get things done. Usually in the morning it take me over an hour to read all the posts since the previous night, and most nights I am up a little later than I would care to be reading the daytime posts and/or posting and defending my color choices or some other thing.
Last night I was in bed before 10pm (rare) and today up before 6, read and responded to posts in short order, did my email and am ready to work at just a few minutes before 7am. So there is that. ffcheesy
It also occurred to me (after Howard pointed it out in another thread) that they are likely talking about us more than we are talking about them. That didn't occur to me, being the utterly forgettable type that I take myself to be.
Looking pretty good down there. Keep the pictures coming so we know it happened!
Enjoying the pictures.

Thank you very much Robert for posting today's short video.
I hope that you and Martha are having a great time.
Looks like a grand old PrOject, and seeing Jake operate every a piece of equipment he owns - well it's probably as much fun for him as it is for everyone watching.
.
I got a quick glimpse of Chief, the resident sawmill logdog, and it looked like he snagged a string of sausages from a table and was hightailing it for the woods.
Clever boy! running-doggy
... takes after his master.
It was a great prOject, we had fun and made a lot of sawdust. Lots of sawing going on. That string of sausages Chief had was one of Docs amputated simulated arms he used at the first aid class.
Well, good for Chief.
One man's amputated arm is another's string of sausages.
Did Doc take advantage of the situation to teach about the treatment of bites from wild animals? :wacky:
Wishing safe travels for all those on their way home from another great event. If you're driving and get tired, pull over. Get home safe so you can upload your photos and videos! :wink_2:
Many thanks to Jake for hosting this and all the work that it takes to make it happen !! Thanks to everyone that chipped in and helped in so many different ways! It was good to see people that I met before and to meet new members. We had a great time .
Well we made it home fine. To those still traveling be safe!! I really enjoyed my first project and meeting so many of y'all. What a great event!! Thanks Jake.

Had a great time. Many thanks to all that pitched in and helped to make it what it was. Everything from helping with the logs to all of the help in and around the kitchen. I couldn't have done it with out all of the help. Much appreciated. Thanks to all that went to the effort to come. We had few set backs but just kept plowing forward.
Great shorts Robert. Can't wait to see some other's videos.
Thank you hosting, Jake. It was good to see so many friends and to continue to learn from experts. I know our host must be exhausted and I hope he can get a little rest this week. I took fewer pictures than at any previous project so I'm looking forward to seeing the videos and photos of others.
Tons of footage to process today, I was able to get some fantastic shots with the 360 camera following Jake's 70, should make for an interesting video.
ETA on the video is Thursday if I can get it done by then,
Great weekend, went by way too fast as usual.
It's become a tradition, by the look of it.
Martha Milton used to start the project bonfire with a drip torch.
She seems to have graduated to heavy equipment for the kindling.
Any way you look at it, she's the best fire starter I've ever seen.
Hi all, got home late last night. Plan was to make the drive in two days but I decided to do it all in one day to take advantage of lighter Sunday traffic.
My first project so wasn't for sure what to expect. What a pleasure! Lots of interesting demonstrations to learn new practices and techniques. Jake and Robert teamed up to do quartersawing, Howard showed projects made from sawmill scrap, Doc did Stop the Bleed along with a bench demo, and Jeremy showed off fishing rods. Lots of other things going on in slack moments. Made new friends and shared thoughts along with ideas. And the meals were excellent!!! Lots of hard work went on in the kitchen and on the BBQ. Thanks to all that made that happen.
A few pictures from the quartersawing demo.

I don't have any problem getting good figure quartersawing......with perfect logs. Jake picked two tough ones that I would have butchered. One had three piths while the other had curved and straight rays along with taper. Lots of great information and technique sharing went on. I can put those skills I learned to good use. Thanks guys!
A big thanks to Jake for putting on Project 2024. I really enjoyed it.
Well Georgia and I got home safe about 1:30 this afternoon. unloading and resting. what a great time. Thanks Jake and everyone.

I got home safely also. Thanks to everyone that made the PrOject a great success!
it was a good time getting to meet so many people for the first time. Didn't bring my GoPro this time around but snapped a few pictures! Thanks to Jake for hosting and everyone for handling all the logistics and the good times and good food!

Sorry for not posting more. This is first time I've been on line sine I left the hotel for Jake's on Saturday. Spent 2 nights at my Aunts in Lake City Fla and now at mom's in N Fla. Her 94th birthday is Friday and I'm bring her back with me for a week. We'll stop in Charlotte Saturday night and visit my daughter and grand kids Sunday then got to WV.
Jake,
I realized after I left I left my mystery wood on a stack of lumber there under your shed. It is about 12' wide and 3' long and 9/4 with a little spalting on the base. Robert determined it was butternut. We figure its worth about $450 so please just go ahead and sell it and send me the money. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy Okay, throw in the the to sell or use or firewood pile as most appropriate. Thanks again for hosting this event.
Ah HA! So you folks are alive and well, I was starting to worry when you didn't jump all over the recent post on my thread. Glad you are OK.
Jake, forget what Howard says, take his 'highly valuable butternut' and throw it behind the seat in your truck and bring it to the Pig Roast and I will give you 5 bucks for it (cold hard American Cash) and you can give Howard his cut. :wink_2: (No really, I have never had a piece of Butternut in my hands, let alone in my shop and it's the least Howard can do considering his relentless color issues.)
Jake, thanks so much for hosting the project again!! It is impressive to see how much everyone cares about this profession. Thank you for investing your time, effort and resources into this group. It always amazes me how much I learn at this event. Tips on sharpening blades, quarter sawing logs, learned more about skip-tooth chains, muscle cramp remedies, advantages of using 1-1/2 - .055 blades on my mill, how to market our scrap wood, and the simplest of all using pvc pipe to pass strapping bands under lumber packs. Oh and the stories you hear are amazing. The project is one of the highlights of my year. Thanks again Jake, Robert, Nathan and all in attendance !
I looked and felt like a bunch of the butternut I've sawn, but it seemed to be a little heavier than I am used to. Other than that, it was a dead ringer. WV Sawmiller says butternut is not uncommon in his area, so it seemed to be a good fit.
It also highly reminded me of some of the Kentucky Coffee I have sawn up, which also looks a lot like butternut except for the bark, and is slightly more dense, but I wasn't sure if there is any in that locale as it is very rare.
As I mentioned, I am only familiar with the species I have in my region.
I don't have either of those in my area, so I'm not familiar with them. I'll call it whatever you want me to as long as it belongs to me.
For those that think the area on the chute side of my mill is a great place to watch it. This happened just this morning.

That could leave a mark. no_no
Best wear a cup..
That is always a wake-up call :shocked2: and I have had it to happen several times. I hate that I did not have a camera during my 1st six years of sawing.

Once even punched a new hole through the metal chute.
Thank you Jake for hosting this event and allowing us to see your operation.
I am amazed at the talent and skills of the members of this forum.
To all those that helped and made presentations, thank you!
In A&P school, we were taught to never stand in the plane of rotation of anything under power. Propellors, jet engine compressor and turbine blades are a few that come to mind. Stand off to the side and in front of or behind whatever is turning high rpm. So you would be basically at a 45 degree position. Oh yeah, don't walk into the exhaust of a jet. smiley_thumbsdown
Jake,
Since Tom is so excited about the butternut go ahead and scrape some of the mud off the cookie I left on top of the board and go ahead and sell that to him for $5. That would be a "fair" price for him to pay for it. ffcheesy
Just posted the project video on YouTube
Hope I did it justice

Or the intake. ffsmiley
The warning marks, at the gate, were about 15 feet, for an idling engine. Full power you need around 40 feet in front. When we trimmed engines, we were at takeoff power and you approached from the side and you leaned over real low or crawled under the cowling to the fuel controller.
I had a coworker get sucked in an inlet during an engine trim run. Lucky for him it was a -200 with a Pratt and Whitney JT8D-17 with inlet guide vanes before the compressor blades. Those guide vanes saved his life.

I did not see nor hear anyone speak of Purple Drank ??
There was water, pop, sweet and unsweet tea, "barley pop", and good hot coffee for the early birds who ate breakfast with Jake. I didn't see any thing purple. pepsi_smiley
