Title: How I got into sawmilling
Post by: 123maxbars on January 04, 2019, 10:23:07 AM
I was asked on here via private message by two members on how I got into sawmilling. This is a short video I did about a year ago that kind of explains how it started. I bought my LT35 in 2011 and up until 2016 I had spent the previous 15 years wearing a badge and after leaving to pursue my sawing full time I have never looked back,

Thanks Nathan.  I must say that if your sawmill skills have increased as much as your video production skills, then you must be one heck of a sawyer.

You rock!

Thanks Nathan!  I have been following you on youtube for a while now.  We want to build a small farm, and our property is mostly woods, so we figured we had to cut down trees anyway, so why not make the lumber for our out buildings out of them.

I love seeing people succeed at what they love!
I know people who have taken an 80% pay cut and wouldn't go back for anything.

I took more than an 80% cut, but I relocated to a different state, so it's going to take some time to get established. Unfortunately, I may have to go back to punching a time clock for a while, but I'm trying not to lol

I know I already posted, but this is a nice thread.
I have no big moment story.
My Father grew up around the circle saws. He never worked at one,but would bring lumber to be sawn to one.He built the house that I grew up in with trees from the land I live on now.
We looked at band sawmills for years. Seem like we spent more time looking at the one I bought,Thomas, than really any other kind. I or we looked for 20 years before I bought one. My Father never got to see that dream fulfilled. :( I don't saw for others. Well I should say I don't really want to. I have sawed for a few people I've known. But with my logs. I might of made $500 with my mill. I got the tire kickers when we had the Greenhouse, produce business. A high quote would send them to others. ;D Once the saw sat for 2 years waiting for my next project. The saw is waiting for another project now.
I really enjoy sawing. I have a friend that shows up with gloves on and says, what do you want me to do? He's getting really good at sawmill work. We all need a friend like Doug.

The hardest part is getting started I'm learning first hand, and getting used too irregular income. Hopefully I can "Make hay while the sun shines" (old saying), when work is busy, and build a cushion of savings to get through the slow times. Sometimes taking a day job in necessary to keep the finances afloat, until a niche market can be established.(https://forestryforum.com/board/Smileys/default/thumb.gif)

I like watching the videos, (especially the pour on the water "Everyday is like Christmas" parts), and the background music. (https://forestryforum.com/board/Smileys/default/grin.gif)
