I have a stack of southern pine I'm about to saw up. When I stand at the pile I can hear the tell tale sound of the flat head borer bettle eating away at a few of the newest logs I just brought in.
I want to ask, If I cut this wood and mix it with the good wood in a air drying barn, will they die as the wood drys or infest the other wood?
What can I do to kill these little SOB's short of kiln drying the wood?
Thanks,
Brian

Tom

We run into it all the time.  The only way to fight them is to cut the logs right off of the stump or submerge the logs in water (pond) until you can saw them.

Usually you will slab the bugs of of the outside of the tree.  I've sawed many flat-head borer infested logs and gotten good lumber.  Drying asap is also a combatant.  Spraying with an insecticide helps.  Getting the slipping bark away from the logs as soon as possible helps too.  The Beetles are laying their eggs on the bark and they live beneath it for quite some time.

If the wood is to be pressure treated, then you haven't much worry.  It'll kill most anything.
