Title: here we go again
Post by: ehp on December 21, 2020, 12:21:21 PM
We get locked down again at midnight Thursday for 28 days , if north of Sudbury its 14 days . I was just at my Stihl/Husky dealer and he says things ain't good , saw stuff is pretty hard to get as neither of the companies have much in stock, I think he is down to 7 stihl saws and 6 husky saws and not much showing up to replace that has been on order for quite a while

We are waiting for the shoe to drop. That is really hard going into what should be the busiest time of year for retailers, Christmas is going to be very bleak for many.

Yeah, it was hard to get a clearing saw all summer. In July I was told, no more Stihl 560's available in 2020. Ordered a Husqvarna 555 clearing saw and it was a 2 week wait, but later in the season you couldn't get one at all.

We are classified as essential workers so we can travel no problem regardless of lockdown conditions however stuff is hard to get in some cases and with the lockdown in UK yesterday and now a ban on travel from UK to pretty much all of Europe we are affected as our spares Stihl and Husqvarna come from UK to us here in Ireland. I ordered a AV spring for my 572 and after 4 months it hasn't arrived .... I've been ordering directly from a dealer in UK but now that's a no go due to Brexit ! soon as they, the UK, leave European Union on 1 jan 21 we will be charged tax on goods coming in ! I'm just glad I can work.

Irving has an add for 70 clearing saw workers for 2021. I wonder where them saws are coming from? They buy Stihl 560's and they buy them for this crew they are hiring. I bet they get those 70 saws to.

so today now its the Dec 26th we get locked down, yes we can work just like in the spring but parts will be even harder to get

So it looks like I bought the last 5 good stihl 20 inch bars and the last 25 inch good bars stihl canada had in stock , got another 20 chains so I should be good for quite a while cause I feel this shut down is going to last alot longer than what they are telling us

Yeah. We've been in lockdown more or less for the past 6 months here in Spain. It's been super frustrating as for all. I live right on the border of one of the provinces of Spain, and my province itself has been locked down. So..... Where we shop normally is across the border. That's a pain. Thankfully both the Husky and Stihl dealer are in my province. I guess that's all that matters lol

I shouldn't complain here, based on what you're seeing Ed. But I'll share this anyway. My 372's have been on backorder for a while as you know. Ship dates have been forecast for the first or second week in Jan. Figure we'd see them after we return from our Holiday break. (we close the week between Christmas and New Year). So, on Wed the 23rd they decide to ship the saws. Kind of nice, other than there will not be anyone here to receive them next week. Land Air Express will have a whole week to beat them up until we return. The re-introduction, make that the 5th re-introduction of the 372, may begin with a scratch and dent sale! LOL

Ya Spike the dealer was very surprised when 2 of the 372's showed up from out of no where , I just hope a huge shipment for  both companies show up for the dealers more than us working , we are now in lock down and the smart people say 1/3 of all business will not come out of this lock down , they will close their doors for good which is not good and honestly not fair . We will see how things turn out but I hope everyone is still able to keep their doors open once this is over

We are held down quite abit more than you guys in the USA up here and have been sense the start of covid , I watch videos of things you guys get to do which we cannot like shows, going out to eat, going to see your buddies or even family but do not live in your house , it makes the days go alot longer for most people up here and now we have winter

Yea - yet the Canadian border remains basically open to just about anyone who can afford to fly in here - and the only restriction for such travelers is to wishfully hope they read the placards at Pearson and other airports (Pearson probably the busiest of all and interestingly enough, smack in the middle of the worst area of infections in our fair land - the GTA) and take advice to heart and 'self quarantine' for 14 days after arrival..  Yup - that'll happen I'm sure!   You got to love and admire the hypocrisy of it all..

And if it wasn't for that hyprocisy, I could have a little respect for it. We're told we can't go to bars and eateries and gyms. Shouldn't spend Holidays with families. But every weekend this area is flooded with out of state plates, mostly NJ, but also CT, MA and PA. If it's all about "stop the spread", all of this interstate travel is far more dangerous than hanging out in a bar with the locals or getting together with the family.

We're dipping out toes into politics here which is a no-no. (thankfully) But from what I've been told, product shortages on some things are going to be with us for a while. There's no way to predict what and where. Factories are set up for distancing, which can hamper normal production rates. But it only takes one idiot to show up to work not feeling good to cause a production line shut down.

We never do a "hard sell" on our customers, but if you are really going to need something you should buy it. The guys who dilly-dally and wait for deals can end up missing out.

We're relatively rural here and forgotten except for the prison. COVID came here from a chicken processing plant about 35 minutes away. 80 workers tested positive in the beginning. They speak four languages there at the plant.....'nough said.

In reality though, somebody would have flown in with it or brought it in by car from a city. It's just that the plant had taken absolutely no precautions whatsoever.

So yeah, absolutely no talk of the vaccine here even in nursing homes. It's the delay effect of big city first and then trickle down.

Totally agree with Bob;if you see something you really need saw-wise, buy it now because this will get worse before it gets better.

Wellll, if the gasoline would keep, then I'd get it now (but, no matter what we do it's not going to be any good THAT long). 😷🤬💩🤯
Title: Re: here we go again

When I had my big farm in MO, I had an above ground gas tank and a diesel tank. The bulk plant told me as long as I had an automatic atmospheric vent on my gas tank that opened and closed related to pressure inside the tank, the gas would keep indefinitely. That was premium unleaded. It seemed to work.

I notice now when I store non-ethanol gas in sealed cans, it lasts six months....maybe longer but I'll pour it out just in case at that point. If I had my M43 runnin', I'd pour any junk gas into it....it will run on just about anything.

so it really is looking like parts are going to be hard to get for the next while , most companies are clean out of stuff and none coming back into the parts supply for 4 to 6 months

So I got a friend that has a 371 and it needs a ring , single ring piston in those saws so I ordered the ring and it came in today so I went and got it from the husky dealer , they have a total of 2 saws in the whole place and they are the 2 smallest husky saws you can buy , Husky themselves have no saws to ship to the dealers here , Zero saws in stock and are saying zero coming in March and maybe zero coming in April , this is not good

No that is not good👎👎 Last time I was in the local Farm and Fleet which is a full line Husky and Stihl dealer, they were pretty well stocked with each brand in both pro and consumer saws. They didn't have any Stihl 500i's, but they did have a ms462.

I haven't priced saws lately until yesterday.  After our 365 got smooshed I started looking.  The prices seemed quite a bit more than just a couple of years ago.

Sure isn't getting better down here either. I've been hoarding saws myself, and I actually have more saws than Husky does in their Troy warehouse. I guess a LOT more as they essentially have nothing. They have no 572's and I have about 30 including the G's. 15 each on the 562 and 550. I saw this coming and did what I could to prepare for it. Only stuff I'm wiped on are 390, 395 and 372. Have 365's though. And the "sleeper" 565's as well. I'll be OK for a while. Getting more calls from further away so who know if that will run things down quicker.

Haven't seen any problems with parts and accessories so far. No issues at all getting repair parts from Husky, and no bar or chain backorders from anyone. But with all that's going on, I'm beefing up a little on everything. The steel shortage will eventually affect everything, but in addition to Husky bars and chain, I can order Oregon product from a few suppliers. Other brands? Oddball bars really aren't that bad, and guys can run them if needed. I'm thinking all of those Oregon knock offs like Rotary, Stens, Archer and what not. Chain is another matter, cause guys absolutely don't want any of that Chinese chain. Oil is coming in better than it was last summer. A saw shop cannot run out of mix and bar oil, or bars and chain. Like a diner running out of coffee. :)

Ya Spike , I got more saws than my dealers have lol , guys have been asking if I got any to sell but Im sticking with what I have here just incase this goes on longer than I hope , I just bought another 35 chains and 10 more bars and all the files the dealer had so I should be ok for a day or to
Title: Re: here we go again
Post by: Spike60 on March 04, 2021, 06:59:02 AM
Ya know Ed, I hadn't really thought about that; customers loading up on supplies to avoid shortages down the road. I probably wouldn't let anybody buy every file in the store like you did. :)  Can't let anyone clean me out on anything and have nothing for other customers. Gotta keep all my customers supplied and working.

But I need to give this some thought because a couple of the bigger tree companies can buy a lot of stuff in one visit in normal times. If these guys start loading up, I'll just have to manage things as they unfold. Kind of like when a major storm hits. Always give priority to my regulars vs guys calling around.

Does anybody know if the Stihl dealers are as wiped here in the US as up in Canada? Those poor guys are so brow beaten on only selling Stihl bars and chain I could see some of them sitting empty waiting for more. I don't stock anything for Stihl so it doesn't matter to me, but I'd hate to see this whole thing be like toilet paper was a year ago.

Lots of stihl dealers got Oregon bars and chains and files . My dealer retired on Monday cause he can see whats coming down the road . He sold out to another guy which is suppose to keep the place going so I bought pretty much everything he had in stock that I will need down the road . The new guy just bought the store but not the inventory which seems rather weird . Stihl got another 100 ES 20 inch ES bars in stock on Monday.  No 24 inch light bars but I got lots from the last 100 that came . Husky here may even be in worse shape. The big tree company smashed a saw on Monday and warehouse had 1 saw which they took . A 565 . Husky dealer got 2 husky riders show up beat up pretty bad in shipping . Said no thanks and sent them back . Husky phoned and told them there is zero riders coming as they have none

I'm trying to let my forwarder catch up so I'm sitting around a little and was reading Husqvarna wasn't doing very good the last quarter of 2020. I'm not trying to add to the situation but maybe there's more to the story than we see🤷🏼‍♂️
Title: Re: here we go again
Post by: ehp on March 04, 2021, 02:02:09 PM
yes there is , Husky is coming out with some new saws and getting rid of old stock is just smart business and get rid of the old saws at alot higher price than having to sell them at a lower cost . Here a stihl 462 was about $300 more than a 372 or a 572 but I'm sure that gap will be alot closer once everything settles back down . I do not see the stihl price going lower but the husky price going higher , $2,000 chainsaws will be here to stay boys like it or not

I know my Husqvarna 555 clearing saw jumped $300 last year and it took 2 weeks to order in. Over $1700 out the door. ::) I was told by Stihl, no saws available. Then after I get the Husq. I get a call the next day and they said my saw was in. I had called two dealers, both said no saws. So hard to tell, might be a pricing game. ::) ::) I believe like anything the government gives you a tax rebate on, will drive up the price. If you're using the saw for a living, they know the tax man gives tax rebate on saws and parts even as an employee.

Canada Tax credits for employees that buy their own power saw at their expense for use in forest operations....chainsaw, clearing saw, tree trimmer saw (https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/deductions-credits-expenses/line-229-other-employment-expenses/forestry-operations.html)

Can't put any faith in the projected dates that units will show up. In most cases they continue to roll further out. Just when you think they're going to ship next week, they get kicked out another couple weeks. But the opposite is sometimes true as happened with your stihl. I was down to just two 550's and they were supposedly 3 weeks out. Then the truck pulls in and there they are. Wish that would happen with the 395's. :)

I agree , you just never know . I had a talk with my GMC/Chev dealer last night , They were down to 1 pickup which they were holding just to have a pickup , they got 165 pickups on order but have zero idea when they are to show up  but 5 showed up yesterday , you know its pretty bad when every person that works there is told to put their pickup in the line up outside to make it look like they got pickups to sell

Well from what I can gather this situation has gotten worse for just about everybody. @ehp (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1195), how are things up there?

I'm still pretty good on the pro stuff, other than 395's and 372's. Have them both on order, and most spoken for already. This supply mess has caught up to me on the homeowner saws though, as I didn't load up on them as much. Only 400 series model I have is a dozen 460's. Last of the 445's and 450's went out last week. Have a few 135II's and that's it for the homeowners. Even out of 545's, which had become a decent seller. Haven't run into any problems with parts or accessories so far.

Glad I don't need to shop for a pick up truck. :)

If you think about it most if not all of the electronic devices used on automobiles come from the Pacific rim .What just happened ? They just got a giant container ship stuck sideways in the Suez canal .Most if not all Ford plants are on the eastern side of the USA . So across the Indian ocean , through the canal, through the Med than over the Atlantic .Don't forget just because it says" Made in USA" doesn't mean all of it .--just saying ---

So true!
Back when Ford still made the Crown Vic, I saw a breakdown diagram of the origin of the parts.  I was surprised.  Spindles from Europe, sensors from Japan it was 80% imported content.  It seems this is in most manufacturing today.

It is just that....major appliances, cars/trucks, etc are mutts. What we used to call Heinz 57's.

And not to really knock down the Millennials or the Gen Z's but they've been brought up to believe everything is disposable. Get the five yr warranty on that expensive LG washer you just bought because in five yrs it will be toast. And once you've been raised with that, you believe it.

An us 'old coots' are just babbling about the days of yore......what do we know....lol.

Spike its pretty bad here , were back in real lock down again for another month , I got a new ms 400 from my bobcat dealer cause he is now a stihl dealer but the normal stihl dealers have zero saws in stock and none coming , I help place the order with the bobcat dealer cause they had no idea on what to get, They could place a order for 24 saws once period , if you ordered 6 then thats all you got and you may not see any more saws until late fall or 2022. My Husky dealer has been phoning me looking for saws cause they have zero saws and was told June or later before maybe seeing any from husky , My gmc dealer had 3 pickups where 150 in stock is normal . The company that makes our cable and chokers for logging has been down now almost 2 months and not sure when they will be back making stuff . I bought 3 spares cables and 12 chokers before they shut down so I'm good . I know guys waiting on parts sense Oct. to fix machines so they can go to work . Used saws are getting what they were in price when brandnew , my friend that owns a marina is sold out of boats and motors till 2023 , thats right people bought boats for the 2022 late august shipment and put a heavy down payment on something that may never show up , no stoves, fridges, dishwashers, washers and dryers or pretty much anything at stores . Its pretty bad

Another thing if you think about it ,this lock down has been  going on nearly for a year .Things like chainsaws no one had money to spend on them and the buying public is much larger than for professional users .This thing is like coming out of a depression ,takes time .All I can say in this time of 10 dollar 2 by 4 studs for an 8 footer  is batten down the hatches because it won't be over in a month .Good heavens a 4 by 8 sheet of 3/4" plywood for 95 bucks and they whine about $3 gasoline .
Title: Re: here we go again

Problem is Al , people are spending more money than ever before on saws and toys and you cannot compare the USA to here on lock downs as were far worse and have been all along and were over a year here . Houses are selling for crazy amounts like $200,000 over asking price is normal now , its got to the point now they just tell everyone to bid and the highest bid wins

Ed, does that example of no saws til late in the year just apply to that new stihl dealer, or is it all of them? That's way worse than down here. How are repair parts? So, far so good on most Husky parts. Got a 550M2 laid up waiting for a coil, but that's it. But I'm ordering more on the fast movers just in case. Don't need to get surprised and with what's going on, can't assume that every part is a day away. In some cases it's more than my regular parts cabinets can hold, so I got these parts bags hinging on nails in a store room. Kind of a mess, but it's temporary and ya can't fix saws without parts. Sales manager of local Chrysler and Ford stores Told me they have vehicles sitting there that they can't repair for lack of parts. Trucks on either lot are mighty scarce.

Maybe with all these shortages more dealers and customers will "discover" the Husky 565, as it's about the only saw you can order and have shipped the same day. It's as close to the 572 as the 555 is to the 562 and it just sits up there in the warehouse and hardly anyone orders it. I do pretty good with the 565, but most dealers don't stock it.

Spike , I know a couple bigger stihl dealers and they got zero saws and cannot get them , we can stihl get some parts for saws but that department is getting less and less each day , The bigger husky dealer here has zero saws and cannot get any and believe me they are trying to get saws as they supply the county workers which is a big amount of sales per year for the dealer . I have seen a few dealers with echo saws in stock . It kind of like this Spike , you try your best not to break anything cause you may end up sitting waiting to get parts , Tires are quite hard to get and I mean hard , companies are phoning tire shops trying to buy the old take offs cause they cannot buy new tires

I have been seeing shortages since October.  Having to go with your second or third option, sometimes the fourth or fifth choice.  Between backorders, change in design, updates and tech bulletins I have needed to resort to used parts to get a vehicle back on the road.  Even when money was not the issue.  It comes down to need and availability.  Having a backup plan and options is all you can do.

The prices they are trying to get on used stuff amazes me .Pick up trucks especially .You can't find a regular old work truck, you know single cab 8 foot bed .Any more you can get the whole family plus the dog inside them and get a dozen bags of groceries in the little short bed .
Chains saws don't affect me as long as I can find parts but on the forums they try to get 300 bucks for box full of parts .Weather anybody actually buys them I have no idea .

Al I got people trying to buy my old saws for more than what I paid for them . I got a guy that's wants the new 500 and 462s I got sitting on the shelf in their boxes and offer me 25% over what I paid . Told him sorry but no .  Donot even talk pickups  very few of them here and there gold in their asking price

Funny how things like saws, pickups, heavy equipment are all so impacted, but not I phones, lap tops, or electric cars. Almost like someone doesn't want us riding around harvesting trees and other resources. Now where did I hear about such a plan?

This area is mainly agriculture with very little actual logging and really pro grade saws are only used by the tree trimmers .Most of those are Stihl .I'm probably one of only half a dozen in the entire county who does not make a living with a chainsaw who has any pro grade saws .That's only because I'm a restoration type guy and some of those are 40 years old .I doubt I ever buy a new saw and in my entire life time have only bought two and that now was over 45 years ago and I still have them .
The only time I go to the Stihl dealer is if I need parts so I have no idea what a new saw sells for .Every so often I cruise his dead pile for a rebuilder and have done well at that so far .
Now a comical part about that dealer is about 6-7 years in a two week period I bought a new Toro zero turn mower and a week later bought a brand new Stihl weed wacker . That was a tad over $6000 payed with $100 bills . I thought his wife  has going to faint . :D .

Al , everything here is about growing something , tobacco corn beans or the other type of plant that lots smoke , its brutal here as over another 100 places put in to grow on top of all the others that all ready grow here . Every 1/4 of a mile you see another hoop house and it stinks . When I worked at the stihl dealer I also did lawnmowers and sold 1 for as high as $83,000 plus tax to a older man in I would guess upper 70's or maybe 80's and it was for his wife  and she was 20 to 25 years old and not hard on the eyes , that machine had a folding 84 inch deck, air and every option that could be put on it

Well a $1000 chainsaw would be small potatoes to an 83 thousand dollar lawn mower I must say .Wow

No actually its not, its pretty much business as usual in most areas of Ontario, except you cant get a haircut!  Pretty much everything else can be had for curbside pickup, and in an area with plenty of logging operations and sawmills, there is a slight shortage of of some saws but plenty available. Parts are delayed for a few days but nothing drastic, there have always been parts on backorder. Automotive dealers here flogged off there stock last year and didnt order many new for this year for the sake of the unknown, Chevy and Ford aint gonna build em if the dealers arent ordering them, all supply and demand. I can agree they toy market (boats, atvs, bikes etc.....)is sold right out and used prices are crazy.

Well on the haircuts for about 5 months I reverted back to my 70's hippie mode . As long as I could stuff it under hat I was okay with it .It doesn't grow as fast as it used to nor cover as much of my head for some reason . ???
Title: Re: here we go again

you must be living in a different world then, no one has anything on shelves here and need stuff , just because the rest of the country is sitting on there butt at home that is not the case here as we grow most of the food as far as plant types here and we have offshore guys running everywhere , where I'm cutting right now has 400 offshore already and that number rises alot in the next couple weeks . There is zero saws, zero pickups , my pickup dealer has pickups that have been on order sense last summer and not gotten them and its the same for all the pickup dealers in this area, I'm waiting on a new pickup sense last fall and so far he cannot get me one , ya every so often he gets in a custom but thats not what I want nor does most of the others . We have big business shutting down cause they cannot get parts to fix their equipment , Even the places that sell tractors are pulling their hair out cause they cannot get tractors that the farmers need , lots of farmers are going to plant stuff like corn or beans instead of peppers or other alot higher paying types of crops cause they cannot get the machines to harvest that crop as where corn and beans are pretty straight forward but you make alot less money
Title: Re: here we go again
Post by: Al_Smith on April 13, 2021, 07:08:35 AM
You have to have pretty good ground to grow produce plus have specialty equipment which is not cheap .We have some but most of it has been used for grain crops these days .To the north used to be melons ,tomatoes ,huge cabbages ,sugar beets  .To the east 25 miles in an area I grew up in used to be onions ,mint ,potatoes ,carrots  . Both those areas are reclaimed swamp  lands .
Now the comical thing is with these vast corn fields about like Iowa can be observed around August .Periodically you can see low flying helicopters flying over the fields evidently checking the corn crops ----or some other crop contained with in . :D

@hamish (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=18455), always good to see you! What you're describing is closer to what I have here. Things are spotty, but not totally wiped. Certain models, yes. But not empty shelves. Ten 455's shipped yesterday, so one way or another I have something to offer most buyers. Unless they want 395's. :)

Funny thing is, some people are totally oblivious to shortages. Have 2 guys hounding me for TS348 tractors. To my knowledge they haven't even built them yet. And you can't even answer "when do you expect them" questions. One guy thinks I can "just order one", and I tell him there are none to order and he doesn't get it. The other guy came in for the 4th time, and he's PO'd at us like we're supposed to build them. Be fine with me if they never build them. cause I don't want to deal with either of those "personalities".

Bob, those are blamers or blame shifters. The world is full of them. They are basically entitled, impatient people who when they can't get what they want, they blame others.....even when the 'others' have no control over outcomes. And no doubt they have wives that hear everyday how it's everyone else's fault they can't be heroes and get things done.

The sad thing is they are generally successful people who are on the phone all day blaming/shouting at others for inaction. Some are even functioning sociopaths.

When I have to deal with customers like that, I tend to shift into slower speed for the effect.:)

Ain't got no time for folks like that. I prefer to suggest that maybe they can get what they want better or faster someplace else. That way they find out nobody else can make them happy either and maybe you won't have to deal with them down the road. I know there are several other dealers in your area they could try, but will run into the same thing. ;D

We have about 5000 to 6000 offshore running around here in the fields and farmers need pickups for them to drive around . Chainsaws to clean up fields edges. Lawnmowers to cut grass and tractors to produce whatever they are planting . Yes I live in a different world than most cause things move very fast here . Its nothing for a farmer to order 20 saws at once . Hydro here orders more than that at once . AL here when I worked at the stihl dealer you didn't even bring a single mower out in the showroom that was under $20,000  cause they do not sell . Those got brought out in May when the normal working people would look to buy one . . My friend I do alot of saws stuff with lives in the city and his big stihl dealer has a MS 250 in stock. Thats it . Nothing else new or used and he cannot get anymore until stihl gets some in stock .

I hope things get straighten up here fast cause just break a big machine and see how long it's going to take to fix it cause there is no parts.  I ordered a new set of bobcat super flotation tires and rims yesterday for my ms 740 and they are trying to find me a set of 4 in canada . I hope so cause in this blow sand I need them

So I guess its more a area kind of problem, Pete phoned the dealer we got 2 of our 500i from out west and they are full of saws and have ms 400s in stock as we have nothing here and we cannot get any more as they are back ordered . my new dealer has sure let Stihl know on what is going on and why are we having these problems , out west has saws but we don't

I think you just need to cool your jets and take a breather .The entire known world has been in lock down over a year .It's not going to catch up in a week .
Recently they managed to get a boat stuck sideways in the Suez canal and that certainly didn't help catch up on things . You might think things like Caterpillar, John_Deere .Ford or even Stihl chainsaws because of VA Beach are only USA made but they are made all over the world .They all take parts to work . I'd well imagine even a simple lawn mower production would be curtailed because of off shore made parts they need .In that case you could always get a flock of sheep or goats to fill in .

Now my over active mind kicks in. I'm rather strange that way .If this saw shortage goes for a long time I'm trying too visualize a bunch of Canadian loggers with double bit cruiser axes and two man cross cuts attacking  the timber with great gusto .When the sun rises in the west perhaps and then the price of lumber surely will rise . ;D

Al, I got a guy here with a new excavator that has been sitting sense Oct cause they cannot get the parts to fix it but they sure are taking their monthly payments from him, if stuff like that does not get you going then I guess nothing would , we ordered 8 saws last night from out west cause the tree guys cannot wait , they need them now . It use to be I could just walk down to the corner parts store and order what I want , now I'm ordering stuff from all over North America and hoping I can get it cause I few times I get yes we have the parts in stock so you order them and they take your money and 6 months later the parts show up cause they had to wait to get them , there is all kinds of games being played now a days

There was a former sponsor on this site that would do just about the same regarding parts .Said they had them over the telephone but did not .Others too cheap to hire  telephone sales people , became strictly "e business " fired them too . I've fired crew help , lawyers,  doctors ,dentists and one wife so far .That last one  as it worked out cost me a lot of money .I don't recommend it . :D

My dealer I got the MS 400 from texted me lots today, to say he is abit unhappy with the chainsaw shortage is not even close , He opened the Stihl side last Friday and is to get a bunch more saws and all he has left is a 291 , nothing else and has guys screaming for 50 plus saws , Out west has saws but we sure do not . So no curfew cause they know that is not going to work , alot more job restrictions as of midnight here , closed down everything outside like golf tennis , whatever. You are not to have anybody in your house that does not live in your house full time unless the person lives at his own house by himself and you can only have 1 . They are calling for the Federal govt to stop allowing people from outside of Ontario to land here , close all air flights which is what should of been done a year ago , They started testing people coming off the planes from other parts of the world not very long ago and just at Person airport they have found over 2200 people with covid coming into Ontario

They just backtracked on that one. They originally gave law enforcement the power to stop any vehicle for no reason to see if the person/people in the vehicle had a valid reason for not being at home. Law enforcement agencies said...um no, we're not doing that.  Now they've reworded it to say anyone can be stopped if they suspect they are going to some sort of gathering...as if they would ever be able to tell that.  Our government is trying to suck and blow at the same time....as usual.

That's why I have clippers for my hair. I always do my best to take it down as low as it will go, like NO guard at all. The wife doesn't like it but if I don't cut it short then I look like a clown. Bald on top and a ring of hair around the rest of the head. ::) I shave it off with a blade occasionally and people freak out when I tell them how I do it, while taking a shower so it's it just goes down the drain, clipper first though. People often wonder how I do it without cutting the snot out of my self. I tell them "easy, I go strictly by feel & don't slide the razor around. That's how I shave also". Raised by a Marine, what can I say. Crewcuts are easy to take care of also, no cowlick that way, or wild hairs that have a mind of their own  sail_smiley

In used trucks it's almost impossible to find a regular old pick -me-up with a regular cab and an 8 foot bed .What you do find is over priced double cab golf club haulers with itty bitty beds .The interiors  are all dolled up like a Cadillac ,country club truck . 2 of my friends want to replace their Rural mail vans for various reasons.

Toyota can supply, but the vans are being built in Japan now, and will be 6 weeks away.

I can hook you up with a barely used VW van, or a Chinese LDV with a 100 yard warranty.  :D

The VW, too expensive to repair with the local dealer. The LDV, well it's Chinese. One of the windows fell out.  ::)

Like you say, it's hard to find a regular "work" vehicle. But then again, they are in these vans for maybe 8 hour a day. So automatic, climate control, comfy seats do actually matter. Then there's the safety ABS, airbags, stability control etc.  So a "basic" vehicle is sorta out  of the deal.

Blue jeans with holes .They are just lazy, I install my own holes even patch them myself .Aside from being a fairly good mechanic I can run a Singer sewing machine .When they get too bad to wear they become rags .Takes a long while before that happens .
I think I have have 5 or 6 suits which are seldom worn but just yesterday we laid my uncle of 93 to rest after a life lived well . 300 miles round trip from the flatlands of northern Ohio to the south where they ran out of flat ground and had to stack the acres on end .

Then again I've got several dozen chainsaws I seldom use .Only one woman though .Can  you imagine a harem ? My goodness that would cruel and unusual punishment . :o

Getting kind of low on some models myself now. I've mostly stopped shipping saws. Only a couple of models I have enough in stock to do that. For the rest, I'm holding them for my local guys. But people are driving further to buy them in the store.

The sad thing is that most companies are predicting that this mess is going to take a long time before things improve. The entire supply chain has to recover, and every link is dependant on other links.

Stihl dealer phoned me yesterday and offered a new 500i that was to be shipped to them like it was a very special deal . Told them I had brand new 500i still sitting in their boxes on the shelve but would take a couple new 400s if they could find any . You guys in the USA are w a ways a head of us here .  When I orderedthe flotation skidsteer tires I was told I would have them in 3 days well that sure did not happen and at this point not sure when they are going to show up if ever.  It's going to get worse before it's going to get better . The GM plant here is shut down with no date on reopening cause of the chip shortage

It took me four months to get a complete set of tires for my skid loader. I had ordered them in Nov after harvest and he said it would be a week he would get them from some of there other stores. I went in at the end of Dec and paid the ticket because I wanted them on 2020 taxes he had two at that time and it took till Mar to get the other two. Odd size batteries for farm equipment have been a issue this spring. It took all winter and part of spring to get our seed and chemical for the year. Normally only takes couple weeks. Fuel and oil filters for farm equipment was a issue this late winter early spring. It took many trips to the parts stores and had to get some on line.

@ehp (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1195) I believe that you are RIGHT. Experience is a heck of a thing. Aftermarket parts were just as bad when the ANTIFREEZE plants may/may not have caught on fire just prior to my time in that world. It tended to affect everything. That's assuming they really did 🤔 Keep in mind, that was just before this cluster of different colors/types of antifreeze or R134A.

In used trucks it's almost impossible to find a regular old pick -me-up with a regular cab and an 8 foot bed .What you do find is over priced double cab golf club haulers with itty bitty beds .The interiors  are all dolled up like a Cadillac ,country club truck . New they cost as much as a Cadillac .I never thought I'd see the day somebody shells out 50 plus grand for a truck .Good grief .
That's what I said before and got yadda yadda yadda. $50,000 US is that $65,000 + Canadian truck. You're not going to get that $35,000 new truck today are ya? :D :D :D

Buddy on another thinning crew said his boss gets clearing saw blades for $18 in bulk,  Husky saw shop wants $24, Stihl wants $30. Also wanted to change the arbour for different size hole in blades, 3/4" to a 1". Shop wants 4 x the money. And there is nothing more to it than taking off the blade, pulling the arbour off with no more effort than removing a washer, and sticking the other on and blade back on. If you take the blade off and set the saw down, the arbour is likely to fall out. There is a gear behind it that matches the one on the angle drive gear. A little bit of tacky grease holds it a bit while changing out blades. Anything to steal a buck.  ::)

How 'bout some happy news. :)

Al, we found one of those trucks they don't make anymore. 1991 F150, 2WD, regular cab, 8' box. Two tone dark red and white. Spotless red interior which is another thing nobody makes anymore. Mint condition for a 30 year old truck and only 52,000 miles on it. It was an "old guy" truck that lived in a garage. 15" tires so the tailgate is nice and low. Going to use it as a shop truck for some light P&D, but it's almost too nice to do anything besides the Sunday drives it's been doing for the last 30 years.

Crazy is right Ed. And getting back to work and having stuff to work with is a combo that will contribute to the insanity. All the trades guys around here are struggling to get parts and materials to complete jobs. Probably not a great time to have stuff done if it can be delayed because shortages lead to the use of 2nd or 3rd choice materials or worse. Haven't seen much of it ourselves. One small example: We mostly use NGK plugs. Nobody's got the BPR4ES that goes in most of the Kawis. No Campions. Ended up buying the Torch equivalent. This is going to go on for a while yet.

Lot of free spending going on now with people being depressed from lock downs and free money for not working. But that's going to come to an end when folks realize the prices of necessities like food and energy are climbing and they stop buying things they really don't need.

I'm not sure if there is a surplus of anything .The price of lumber is about 4 times what it was not that long ago .The engine plant I retired from just laid off the entire plant ,no place to send the engines .During the early 80's it was over 4,000 when I retired around 1,200 .That decline in numbers was due to CNC machinery and robotics which is what I did .
This whole thing is odd, many out of work ,shortages of every thing .In all that everyone of my investments are going through the roof ,that I don't understand . ???

As far as an actual lock down here it's not, just curtailed .Restaurants that are set up for a distancing conditions most likely can only do about  50 percent .Those with drive through have very long lines but timing is everything if you choose that route .
We usually only buy groceries about every two weeks and that hasn't been bad .I'm not sure yet what that cyber attack on the pipe line will do if anything .Sounds to me it should be next to impossible for some how  some geek with a keyboard can shut down an entire pipeline supplying 45 percent of the gas and diesel for the east coast on the US . I think they have a fly in the ointment some place .

I got bad news last week, my renter passed away .So now after the family has cleared out his belongings I have a choice of either a new renter  or sell it .
I think it's going to be sell .I'm too old and cranky to get some dead beat renter to deal with .Besides that I have way more in the account for that house than the value and only 2 or 3 years of depreciation left  I can take off my income tax .
It's been a good one though and returned around 8-9 percent of the value every year .The only place you can do that usually is the stock market .
Then I have to deal with capitol gains and how to lesson the pain involved with that .I'm a retired electrician not an accountant but I have a good one because that stuff drives me nuts .

Yup. Why is it that a restaurant has to have social distance room but planes can have every seat full and the people shoulder to shoulder?
The CDC recently said that you can catch covid from 60 ft away from an infected person in the right "or wrong" conditions. And yet we are still doing the six ft. thing.    Why?

Met a dealer friend for dinner and a couple beers last night. He is stihl and all of our brands are different in fact, but the situation is similar for both of us. He's having more trouble getting saws than I am and has no pro stuiff. I'm lighter on the homeowner models, and missing some of those. Shortages aside, we are both having decent years. We did more joking than complaining. Truth is that in this business, these shortages aren't as bad as a drought where the grass turns brown for 2 months. Life can be worse.

Discovered that different bar length SKU's for a particular powerhead have wildly differet ship dates. Some of my backorders got kicked out to freaking August! Then noticed that they were all 24" .058 SKU's, and sure enough, Husky is out of those bars until August. Just call up and change them to 20" SKU's that will ship this month right? Nope, ya can't do that because the system will change the price to the higher April 30th price increase. Not giving that up, so I just ordered more saws and figured I'd leave the original order "in the bank".

Lots of folks have sold off in Ontario and bought here in Nova Scotia .  It is insane how fast places are selling here and the prices they are going for .    It has gotten so bad that people trying to work and live here cant find a place to live. Buying is now far too expensive and only geared to these foreign buyers and there is simply no rentals in my entire county .  Unlimited airbnb and vacations homes for rent , but none for long term rentals.
I bought my house 3 years ago for less then assessment value because I knew the people.  I could of sold it for 3 times what I paid the next day.  Most of the real estate selling here is going site unseen and the next closest offer they had on my place was more then double what I paid.    There is no way this is not the peak of the market and some folks buying right now as an investment are gonna have a very rude awakening.
I also watched a video awhile back about what happened to the real estate prices in Vancouver and how the need to clean dirty money was a very big factor in it .   I believe that is also what has been happening here.  Nobody with even half a brain is paying what they are for what they are and expecting to make their money back.

Bob has a very significant collection of old Jonsered saws. He has never thumbed his nose at those folks using older saws....he quite enjoys using them himself and has many videos out there with them.

In the spirit of fairness, he's in the small engine business and sells new saws. That doesn't make him greedy, unapproachable or 'rich' by any means. He also keeps us up to date on what's new in Husky saws....don't pith him off, as I like him and rather enjoy him being here.;D

If he's making good $$ now because of COVID madness....more power to him. He didn't set out to profit from COVID.....like so many scoundrels have.

Kevin, I am quite sure Nebraska meant a lot less than no harm in that comment. I drive past Spike's shop 4 to 6 times a week these days as I head up to the cutting grounds an I don't see a lot of folks standing in line outside with bags of money waiting their turn to unload it. :D
Mostly what I see are folks coming and going with working equipment trying to make a living, that is on the days I drive by and he is open. I usually pass by a couple of hours before he opens and come home after they close. I also know that business folks like Spike have been severely hampered by the lack of supply from the factory. Very frustrating to have buyers begging and no source of product. Having on open store and nothing on the shelves does not exactly keep the money rolling in.

Everything's cool men. No offence taken by me to anything that was said by anyone, but thanks for the backup anyway. Yeah, we're selling a lot of new saws these days. We've been a little more resourceful at keeping them in stock than most dealers. So, part of it is folks calling around looking for certain models. But inventory is still tight on some models and I'm not doing any shipping of saws. If I was shipping them all over the country, I wouldn't have anything for my regulars.

As far as the old saws go, we're about the only shop anywhere around here that will work on the older saws, We've got parts that Husky doesn't even have anymore, and it'r much the same for the Jonnys. We're definitely not one of those "just get a new one" dealers. Lotta experience. Or put another way, old parts and old farts can keep old saws running.

Yeah, I'm not saying anyone was battering Bob and I could tell it was tongue in cheek. I just felt obliged to say something. The retailers aren't necessarily getting rich because of COVID. Their profit margin is probably the same on the saws, even if they list for more now.

What could be happening is that you sell everything you have because of false panic/hording. And/or your supply chain is so broken on new products, that you sell everything as soon as it comes in the door. My point was, Bob's got suck....and he's taking care of his people first.
