If no one else knows the JD dealer should be able to tell you over the phone.

FWIW..
on my D model..it was under the rear of the cab..on a plate on the frame

the 440b's numbers were on the transmission case about 8-10 inches above the frame rails i think on the right side if i remember correctly 540s may be the same

found the serial number.
