Title: Official 2016 Pigroast RSVP topic
Post by: Jeff on June 03, 2016, 03:47:42 PM
Today we ordered the pig and the port-a-potties (MEN'S and LADY'S!) so that means it is time to start getting a count for the pigroast. :)

You are not required to rsvp to attend, but we sure would appreciate it if you think there is a good chance you are coming to add your number of attendees to our count. This gives us a good idea on what to expect and also gives incentive to others to come. You can always retract if you need to, but you won't  ;) :).

Area Motels (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+lodging&hl=en&ll=43.995778,-84.92981&spn=0.51866,1.344452&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=lodging&hnear=Harrison,+Clare,+Michigan&t=m&fll=43.995778,-84.92981&fspn=0.51866,1.344452&z=10)

Area Camping (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+camping&hl=en&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=camping&hnear=Harrison,+Michigan+48625&t=m&z=11)

I strongly recommend getting opinions on hotels or motels in the area from us or other members that have come to the pigroast. There are a handful that turn up on those google maps that we will strongly advise against. There are plenty of very good places to stay.

Please continue the count in your post. :)

Jeff,
As much as I would like to attend, the Michigan Army National Guard has other plans for me starting that weekend. That starts our annual training in Grayling.

I've followed all your adventures at the pig roast for several years now and would love to attend, but so far it's been too close to our family vacation in the keys. Lobster season starts Aug 6th and I'm in a boat with kids and grandkids spending the week snorkeling and fishing. Sorry to miss the pig roast but look forward to all the pics and reports after the event, wonderful to put faces to names from your reports. Have fun, stay safe, some day I'll find out what "purple drank" is,

Joe

I have waited to reply to this year's Pigroast thread as I was intent on coming, but family events loomed as conflicts.  My daughter, who just graduated from college, has taken a job as a Spanish teacher at a school in Connecticut.  Unfortunately, her "move-in" is that weekend.  She can't get into her apartment on campus prior to that, and she's expected to be there that Monday for the start of her orientation.  So I'm moving stuff to Connecticut that Friday-Saturday-Sunday, and regrettably will not be there this year.

The good news is that, starting this January, I will be significantly less burdened at work, and my schedule will allow such enjoyable trips.  So, count me out for this year, as it is my loss (not yours), and I'll see you next August.

Really hate to miss it, with the new building, and all.  Have a good one. Count still at 58.

Unfortunately Linnea and Jette need to man the fort so I will be traveling solo.

Count is now at 62.

I have attended a few of these events, some very small if you include the weenie roast before the pig roasts began, to very large events of upwards of 100 people.  The small events allow one to visit more in depth with more people but the big events really help put faces to names.  Looking forward to meeting new people and old friends.  :)

This will be the first time in my two year rotation that I won't be attending, Jeff and everyone. We might be having a short work season this year so I have to keep the saw in the bushes. ;) I haven't really participated as much on the forum side the last couple years since a lot of my spare computer time is now dedicated to weaving interests as many of you probably know from Facebook. Have a good time all, keep the roast alive. Good times.

In other news, next year I will likely get the ball rolling on selling this house to return to a new home on the farm and later a wood shop. I still have sawdust in my blood. ;)

You might consider the road less traveled.

Robert Frost (1874–1963).  Mountain Interval.  1920.

1. The Road Not Taken

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;           5

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,           10

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.           15

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.           20

Thanks Danny.  I shorten it down quite a bit:

When you come to a fork in the road.....take it
Never wonder what was down the other road
Because you did not go that way.

All that I know this morning, is that we are going North.   Pat will look at the Atlas and decide.   :)

I believe the above was said by Yogi Berra.
In his case either one would get you to his house as he had a circular drive.

If Pat guides you through Northern PA going to or from spend a few days in Benezette. The campground just outside town is where we had an elk lick all the grease off the fifth wheel pin. The Elk visitors center is also nice.

The Logrite Atv trailer makes a huge job for just two people much easier. Moving the 1000 lb pigroast table.

The nearest airports would be MBS or Flint.  MBS is exactly one hour travel by car to here, 45-50 minutes to Clare.

We need more pig eaters!  I was informed today by the meat packer, that our hog weighs 35lbs more than we wanted.  It may be the biggest hog we ever roasted at around 200lbs hanging weight they estimate.

No, but it may get done later than normal and be a bit warmer for the guys to process than they are used to. It should still get done in plenty of time. I may have cooked a 200 pounder years ago for a graduation. I remember we had a long one here one year that was hard to get in the roaster. We are certainly going to need plenty of hands on deck Friday night to get him lifted in and a cooking.

I held up pretty good. I want to thank all the wonderful help this year as I was unable to do all I wanted.

The pig watermelon was one thing I was able to do, it was a first for me.

It was wonderful to see all the people that came this year. Looking forward to next year and hoping many more will attend.

This beautiful lady won this great prize at our first time to the pig roast this year. She had the prize-winning rubber duck. She sure knows how to pick her duck! crow_smiley

Just about all picked up. Hoopty is back inside sitting where we did the food service this year. I think all and all the buildings debut to servicing the pigroast was a total success. I'd like to once again thank STIHL and Wood-Mizer for helping make the dream of this come true.

Thank You Howdy for donating the array of pottery that was offered as door prizes.  I was fortunate enough to be drawn for the mug with the grapes.  It will be welcomed at the Cabin whose official name is "The Davis Vineyard".

The mugs can be seen on the right in the first of Sheepkeeper's pictures above.

We did a tally, and surprisingly came up with 90 total for Saturday. We had 41 on Friday evening. We would have had well over 100 if everyone on the rsvp would have showed up, and another dozen or so that told me they were coming out side of the forum that were also no shows.

Oh, Goat Is Me

Goats are really kind of weird,
Even babies have a scraggly beard,
They eat all kinds of different things,
Like clothes, and trash, and even rings,
Like your dog you blame for farts,
They are a supporter of the arts,
Paintings, sculptures, and design,
Each is on the menu to dine,
They're like skinny wool-less sheep,
Goats are a perfect date: cheap!
They are fun to pet but watch those fingers,
Bite is worse than bark, but not good singers,
Watch out for their little horns,
A head butt is never easily adorned,
Goats are funny when they climb,
Get your hands off: this one's mine!
